I'm not a regular at Toscana but have been on a number of occasions with various friends over past years. Last Saturday I went with my four sisters for one of our "official" twice yearly night's out when we make a special effort to all be in Ireland for the same weekend. They were absolutely delighted with my choice of location. I had called in three weeks earlier to make a special request for the window table upstairs and on a crisp and clear April evening it was just perfect for exchanging memories and news. The service was excellent and friendly. The food was delicious with four being particularly tasty - we were told by one of the sisters that she would be returning if only for the crab claws starter, they were so good. The calamari was exceptionally tender and the chicken wings disappeared very quickly. The only (very slight) disappointment was the small quantity of the Caprese salad. The main courses chosen were trout, sea bass, penne entrecote and linguine with chicken and prawns. They were all just as we would have hoped and we were so satisfied that only three of could manage a coffee. We will all most definitely be returning.

The Arch Bistro
Above the Glenside Pub, Landscape Road, South Dublin, Churchtown, Dublin

As a group of four friends we met up here intending to have the highly recommended Early Bird menu but when we compared it to the A la Carte we each felt we'd rather have one good course instead of making do with what was a rather uninspiring set menu just because it was meant to be good value. We were not disappointed. Two had the rib eye steak and the other two had the duck breast. Both were absolutely gorgeous. Tasty, cooked to perfection and with lovely vegetables. The service was friendly and efficient and the house wine was a reasonably priced and very smooth Tempranillo. Although the restaurant was quite busy for a midweek evening it was lacking in atmosphere. Perhaps this was because it is rather dark with only a few not very large windows which was neither cosy nor airy and made me feel as if I didn't know what the season was inside or outside. I would still recommend The Arch as a convenient place for a pleasant evening and some tasty food - just don't think I'll rush back.

Toscana (Dun Laoghaire)
5 Windsor Terrace, South Co. Dublin , Dun Laoghaire, Dublin

A second visit to Toscana within the past couple of months and again a most enjoyable and tasty evening. A very wet, windy and grey evening but the warm and welcoming restaurant made up for the weather outside. Garlic mushrooms as a starter were delicious and my two friends were delighted with their prawn starters. I had salmon as my main and it was tender and tangy and the others were very happy with the lasagne and the lemon chicken. I couldn't manage a pudding but the other two had a Gelatto each. The only minor difficulty was that I had a MenuPages voucher for a bottle of wine and it was only after extra persuasion from us that it was accepted - we were originally told that as we were having the Early Bird we would not qualify. However, this was resolved and the wine was so pleasant we had a second bottle (which we paid for!) Definitley will be keeping Toscana on our list of regulars

Douglas & Kaldi Terrace Cafe and Restaurant
Level 2, Dundrum Town Centre, Dundrum, Dublin

Have had brunch and lunch here in the past and always been very impressed. Met with a few friends for an evening meal and it was very disappointing - the menu was rather short on choices and the food was not as good as on all the previous visits. A couple of us had the spicy Singapore noodles and they were only alright; the sauce was lovely and spicy but there was not much vegetable and the chicken seemed to have been steamed and added later as it did not have much flavour. One of us had a hamburger and while I know that they must be well done for health reason this was cooked very dry right through. The deserts were tasty enough but I was surprised that the lemon tart was warm as I always consider it should be cool and tangy. It was not so bad that we would have complained but definitely left us feeling rather let down. I would still go there earlier in the day - just not for evening

Rolys Bistro
7 Ballsbridge Terrace, Dublin, Ballsbridge, Dublin

It is many years since I last visited Roly's and will not let such a gap happen again. A friend and I used my Menupages voucher for lunch on a recent Friday and had a most enjoyable and tasty meal. As is mentioned in many reviews the restaurant can be noisy but this can make it sound quite lively rather than uncomfortable. Our first waiter did not quite understand our query about the pork belly due to language difficulties but it did not cause any problem. The service was excellent throughout the visit and also very relaxed and friendly. I had the Gorgonzola, pear and pecan salad as my starter, which was beautifully presented and cool and tasty and the terrine was the choice of my friend who was very impressed with her option. My main course was the duck confit and it was absolutely delicious (and I fancy myself as a bit of a duck connoisseur) as was my friend's pork belly. We were not able to have a dessert each as we were so full so shared an ice cream sundae and brought home a portion of the crumble. Even without the voucher lunch at Roly's is very reasonable and I will most definitely be gong back in the not too distant future.

Toscana (Dun Laoghaire)
5 Windsor Terrace, South Co. Dublin , Dun Laoghaire, Dublin

Delighted with this choice of venue for early bird meal with three friends especially as we were fortunate to be allocated the round table in the lovely bay window - unfortunately the evening was grey so the view was not as spectacular as it might have been on a clear evening, but the weather was not the fault of the restaurant! Each member of staff was friendly and efficient. Our starters were two Gamberi (prawns) one Bruchetta and one Spicy Chicken Wings and everyone was very happy with those. One of us had salmon and was delighted with it, another had lasagne which we were told was very tasty and I and the fourth person had the Tagliatelle alla Toscana which was absolutely gorgeous. All four plates were returned empty as we did our best to get every morsel from our dishes. I wasn't able to manage a third course but the two Tiramisu and the Gelato and Meringue were well presented and flavourful. We had two bottles of the house red which was very pleasant and all agreed that Toscana will be getting a return visit from us.

Guinea Pig
17 Railway Road, South Co. Dublin, Dalkey, Dublin

Went for dinner with three friends using our menupages offer and we were all very impressed. Great to see a restaurant busy and with atmosphere on a Tuesday evening and also get excellent service. The food portions were very generous and I really enjoyed my tasty fillet steak - which was cooked just to my likiing. Two of the group had pheasant which they really enjoyed and the fourth had duck and the nibble I was allowed from her plate was absolutely georgous. The house wine was very acceptable and not expensive. It is a convenient location with the DART just on the corner and plenty of car parking in Dalkey itself. I think we will all be very happy to return and may all opt for the delicious duck!

Bloom Brasserie & Wine Bar
11 Upper Baggot Street, Dublin 4, City Centre South, Dublin

Visited here using a voucher and was most impressed. It was a Monday evening but still reasonably busy and as a previous reviewer said low on front of house staff. However, most definitely not low on quality of staff - very efficient and friendly and we never felt either rushed or neglected. The food was excellent and we were pleased that we were not charged any supplements for higher priced dishes. I started with the fig and goat's cheese salad and it was really tasty and my husband had a soup which he really enjoyed. We both went for the rib-eye steak and thoroughly enjoyed it. We finished off with a fruit crumble for him and a peppermint tea for me. A really enjoyable meal but I would have felt a bit on the expensive side if we had been paying the full price for the meal we actually had. Would definitely recommend Bloom Brasserie - especially with discount voucher.

Hartley's Restaurant
1 Harbour Road, South Co. Dublin, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin

Very enjoyable meal here and will be happy to return. Just out for a meal with a friend and we were delighted with our choice. Service efficient and friendly and a decent choice on early bird menu . I started with the goats cheese salad which was very tasty (but no great flavour from the beetroot) and friend had spicy chicken wings which were plentiful and moreish. We each had fish main course - I had the cod in batter which was lovely and very light and she had fish pie and both were cleaned off the plates! Atmosphere was alright - it started with a rather loud group of females which was a bit overpowering but when they left the restaurant was more relaxed. We plan on returning in the new year to clear any January Blues.

Scholars Townhouse Hotel & Restaurant
King Street, Drogheda, Co. Louth, Drogheda, Louth

We were six women who had not all met up in MANY years and who decided that a Sunday Lunch together would be a treat. Coming from areas (Dublin and Co Down) north and south we thought the Drogheda area was a suitable location. We were not wrong and found everything about Scholars absolutely perfect. From the warm welcome on arrival, to the friendly service in the charming small bar area while we waited for the arrival of everyone and on to the dining room for the meal, there was nothing to be faulted. When I made the reservation I was asked was there a purpose for the outing and as a result we each had a lovely personalised menu at our table. The presentation and flavour of the food was excellent and the house wine a great (and not expensive) compliment to it. We stayed for quite a few hours around the dining table finishing the wine and having a coffee and just relaxing and talking. We were under no pressure to move out and felt very comfortable and welcome for the entire visit. We will definitely use it again because of its convenient location but in particular for the quality of the food and service.

Alex Restaurant
Conrad Hotel, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2, City Centre South, Dublin

Went for a meal with a friend before going to Concert Hall. Very efficient and friendly greeting at the entrance to restaurant and this continued through the meal. Friend had the halibut which she enjoyed and I had the battered cod and chips with mushy peas. While I shouldn't have been surprised about it, I found the cod extra filling but without the batter still very tasty. We each had a glass of house wine which was dear enough at over €8 each. However, the big minus was the absolutely ridiculous and pretentious serving plates for our food. They were like dishes for serving a giant-sized banana split and most unsuitable for a main course - they made lifting the food very difficult and really were much too OTT. Would opt for sandwiches in the bar next time - a lot cheaper than the €63 for two mains with two glasses of wine and much easier to eat!

Douglas & Kaldi Terrace Cafe and Restaurant
Level 2, Dundrum Town Centre, Dundrum, Dublin

Had lunch with two friends and it was very pleasant and quite good value. I had fresh orange juice while waiting for them to arrive and it really was fresh - tangy and cool - just what I needed. I had the salmon which was the special and it was OK, just a little too well done and therefore a bit on the dry side. The others each had a salad and they looked very good; I think I'll opt for one next time. One of the others had a glass of wine with her food and we all finished with a coffee and I figure it was good value for the couple of hours we spent there, as it evened out at €15 each. Happily go back as it's cheerful, clean and not expensive.

Pullman Restaurant
Glenlo Abbey Hotel, Bushypark, Galway City, Galway

Eight of us ate here and we were all absolutely delighted with the food and the service. We were in the Dining Car which has rich furnishings and was quite comfortable. The only drawback is that because of the layout of the carraige - which is original and not changed by the owners - we had to sit in two groups of four. However, this did not cause any problem in our enjoyment of the evening. The choices were varied and we were each ery happy with them. The pate was exceptionally tasty and the scallops were cooked to perfection. I had rib-eye steak for my main and it was cooked to perfection. I believe the duck, seabass and pork were also devoured with enthusiasm. The wine was reasonably priced and the service was like our "Train Ticket" .....1st Class.

Bijou Bistro & Wine
46/47 Highfield Road, Dublin 6, Rathgar, Dublin

I had an absolutely great evening in Bijou as one of a group of five. We ate upstairs in the restaurant where the service was excellent with helpful and friendly staff. I can't remember the name of my starter but it was salmon and beetroot which I found surprisingly bland - however, any disappointment was completely overshadowed by the delicious rib-eye steak which was my main course choice. Between us we had quite a variety; pate, scallops (which I believe were the best ever!) and crab as starters with the pork belly, sea bass and duck as mains and everyone was completely delighted with their choices. Two of us had opted for the 3-course set menu but then couldn't manage a pudding so we ordered to cheeseboards which we all shared........a great option. The wine was reasonably priced and the smokers among us were most impressed with the lovely outdoor area which had gas heaters to take the chill off the night air. I have been in Bijou before but this was by far the most impressive and I'll most definitely be back. Thank you to everyone there that evening.

O'Connells Restaurant Donnybrook
135 Morehampton Road, Donnybrook, D04 HX46, Donnybrook, Dublin

Three of us eat here one Wednesday evening and the place was pleasantly busy with a subdued hum of activity. The service from the younger staff was helpful and friendly but the older members were a bit distant and slow. I decided not to have a starter so that I might manage some pudding. My main course was plaice which was a very generous portion and the best I've ever tasted. Together with the delicious creamy gratin potatoes and mixed vegetables I did not have room for anything more but the puddngs my two friends had looked wonderful. I don't know about the value of the meal as I was not paying but from looking at the menu it seemed reasonable for the quality and variety of what was offered. For me the major drawback is that while keeping the decor and furnishings in the old fashioned style for the building the chairs were the most uncomfortable I have sat in for may years. I am not a standard size 12 or 14 and felt as if I was sitting on a school chair for a six year old - as the seat part was not large, round, leather-covered with brass tacks around the edge and the back seemed to have very poor support. That means that depite the georgous food I will not be returning as I did not manage to relax and feel at ease for all the time we were there. Very impressed that following the publication of my review above I got a very helpful email (via menupages) from the restaurant assuring me that, if required and requested, they do have cushions and they also have some leather banquette seating - both of which would be much more comfortable. Good to know that these reviews do matter and more importantly that some restaurants actually follow up on comments. Well done O'Connells

Brambles Café Bistro
102-104 Terenure Road North, Terenure, Dublin

Delighted to have been treated (as one of a group of seven) to a lovely time in Brambles. Good location with plenty of parking in the immediate area. The service was efficient and friendly. I didn't have a starter and had the salmon en croute for a main course - absolutely georgous and one of the tastiest I've ever had. I ordered a desert which was very good but in fact would have been happy with just the one course. Everyone else had starters and were most impressed; the warm sweet potato salad was delicious (I tried a forkful) and was told that the other starters were great too. Not surprising in current times the place was not very busy the the atmosphere was still very relaxed and cosy. All of us were pleased with our choices and had a very enjoyable time.

Bits and Pizzas
15 Patrick Street, Dun Laoghaire, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin

Using my Menupoints, my husband and I visited Bits and Pizzas - he had never been there and it is quite a while since I visited. The staff were all exceptionally friendly and efficient and added to a very good experience. We each had a starter and main course off the 3 Course menu and they were tasty and very filling - soup and lasagne for him with mushrooms and pizza for me. I couldn't manage to finish the pizza so was given the remainder in a box to bring home which is always a nice touch. Husband had a couple of beers and I had a glass of wine which really made the meal complete - otherwise I would have had the chocolate brownie and ice cream which looked absolutely delicious. We were both impressed with the place and will definitely return. Well done to everyone there.

Bistro Martello
1 Martello Terrace, South Co. Dublin, Sandycove, Dublin

Visited here with four friends for the Early Bird menu and we were all very pleased with the value and quality of the food. The calamari starter was particularly popular. The atmosphere was relaxed and the background music was noticable simply because it was a nice selection and not too intrusive. The service was efficient and perhaps the only drawback was surprisingly that it was too attentive, personal and chatty - which was a bit of a distraction. If we had been regulars it would have been understandable but we all felt it was a bit overdone for a first visit. We would still be happy to return and perhaps just switch off a bit. Handy location with (usually) parking available across the road.

The Purty Kitchen (Dun Laoghaire)
3-5 Old Dun Laoghaire Road, Co. Dublin, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin

To be honest I'm astonished at the earlier reviews about the quality of the service, as the four of us found it very efficient and super friendly. Our only (slight) hiccups were regarding the interpretation of our Citydeals coupon. It had said it was for two courses and a drink of wine or beer but we were told only starter and main course could be given with it whereas two of us had planned on having a main and then a dessert - I still think they were wrong and we were right! Then secondly we ordered drink - one pint of lager, one bottle of Miller, one lime cordial and I had a glass of tap water. While eating I suggested to the Miller-drinker that she order another one and it could count as my alcohol drink, however when we were finished we were handed a bill for the Miller! Now I know it was only about a fiver but still figured it should have been included as my drink. So the lesson is, if you are not drinking just order something that one of your friends would like. Anyway - the food was excellent. I had delicious calamari and then salmon - there were three soup starters with which everyone was well pleased. Two burgers were perfect and the vegeterian mushroom main course was so filling it couldn't be finished. All through the meal we got great attention from the staff and we'll definitely be returning as the value (even without a discount voucher) is excellent with a convenient location. The place was reasonably busy for 7 o'clock on a Thursday evening so there was a decent hum around the place.

Dunne And Crescenzi (South Frederick Street)
14-16 South Frederick Street, Dublin 2, City Centre South, Dublin

Very pleased with an evening meal with three friends and impressed with food, service and value. We asked for a platter of four different starters and were delighted (and filled) with that decision. We hadn't realised how generous that proportion of food would be but still managed to enjoy our main courses. Between us we had lasagne, fish and vegetarian all of which were well presented and tasty. I couldn't even manage a tea, coffee or liqueur after all the food but we had wine through the meal. Ther service was friendly and efficient, the wine reasonably priced and overall a most suitable location for the four of us and it will be on our list for future get togethers.

Arc Cafe Bar
Liffey Vallley Shopping Centre, Fonthill Rd, West Dublin, Liffey Valley, Dublin

Very glad I bothered to make a reservation because the upstairs was closed off and even though it was a Wednesday the restaurant downstairs was fully booked. Three of us were meeting up there as it is very convenient and a halfway point for all of us. Two of us had fresh salmon with a beautiful lemon hollandaise sauce - my only quibble is that it was hot/warm and served with a cold salad so a confusion of temperatures. The third had chicken korma that she said was very tasty. Service was very friendly and perhaps nearly over-attentive; but lovely staff anyway A good value evening and we will use it for any future get togethers.

Boulevard Cafe
27 Exchequer Street, Dublin 2 , City Centre South, Dublin

We were a group of 10 inclueing a couple of friends we hadn't seen in 22 years and everyone was delighted with the choice. Friendly and efficient staff, great food at good value and so convenient for us all. I don't often go in to the city for a meal but if doing so again would be quite happy with Boulevard Cafe.
