Was on a trip to Carlow for the day, and decided to try this place based on the reviews here. The restaurant itself has a nice european bistro feel to it and a lovely outside area for when the weather gets warmer... Interesting selection of tapas on the menu, not really spanish though, there seemed to be a mixture of spanish, irish, morroccan, american etc.. Based on the waitress's advice that the portions were big, we only ordered two tapas between the two of us, but we could have done with three or four. The black pudding was beautiful, but the falafels seemed to have been baked rather than fried, so they were a little lacking in flavour. However the cheesecakes for desert were lovely. The only other negative, was there were no white spanish wines on the menu, but the french wine we had was very good for the price. Overall an enjoyable meal.

The Bay Tree
4 Stanhope Street, Athy, Kildare

I read some good reviews about this place so we decided to go for dinner on Saturday night, but the place wasn't open and there were no opening hours in the window, so I'm not sure if they open for dinner anymore. Anyway instead we ate here for lunch on Sunday. We had roast chicken and cajun chicken. Both were very tasty, with good quality ingrediants and the staff were lovely and friendly. However the place itself doesn't have a great ambience, it's just like a lunchtime cafe, and the food was definitely overpriced at 12 euro per dish. Overall I'd say it could be nice at lunchtime during the week (they did seem to have a lunchtime special), but if they do open for dinner, I wouldn't really recommend it.

Zest Cafe
Unit 6/7, Clane Shopping Centre, Clane, Kildare

Zest is a great little bistro. Open all day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We eat here several times month and the food is always good quality, well prepared and very tasty. I would say it's a little bit pricier than a similar bistro would be in Dublin, but that's to be expected, as they don't have so much competition. I'd also recommend the takeaway pizza, much higher quality than you'd expect from a takeaway.
