My Thai restaurant
The Beacon Hotel, Beacon Court, Dublin 18, Sandyford, Dublin, Area Code: Dublin 18
Reviewed 12th February 2007 ( visited 12th February 2007 )An amazing place! Went there on Saturday night for dinner and drinks with a friend. The interior is fabulous. We had managed to book a table at 8pm even though they usually prefer to run 2 sittings. The place is very dark but the decor gives a really funky edge to the place. Service was excellent even though the place was very busy. The menu is just the right length (not too long) and provides a good choice for steak eaters, fish people and veggies. Usually starters in Thai and Chinese restaurants are largely deep fried. However, My Thai has a good selection of Thai style salads and spring rolls etc. All main courses come with stir fried veg and a choice of steamed or fried rice so no sides necessary. I can highly recommend the steamed sea bass and also the steak - we cleared our plates of both! A drink in the bar afterwards is an experience not to be missed. A DJ plays a selection of laid back tunes and the cocktails are great ... We'll be back!
Avoca Handweavers restaurant
Kilmacanogue, Bray, Bray, Wicklow
Reviewed 02nd January 2007 ( visited 02nd January 2007 )Avoca in Kilmac is a great place for a wholesome lunch after a walk up the Sugarloaf! The food is wonderfully fresh and tasty with a different menu each time. The homemade soup and brown bread is a meal in itself! However the premises in Kilmac is not very comfortable or inviting. The queues can be off-putting but it’s worth sticking out! The premises at Powerscourt House are much nicer and on a sunny day lunch on the terrace is a real treat.
The Tap (Inactive), Kilbride Street, Ashford, Wicklow
Lovely decor and very comfortable seating. The food was delicious and beautifully served on wooden platters. The soup was delicious - sweet potato - and served with lovely mini loaf of brown bread. Sandwiches and salads are very generous and interesting combinations. The only thing that lets the place down is the service.
Black 'n Blue Grill - Closed
Church Street, Wicklow Town, Wicklow
Service was not very friendly or attentive. We had to call the waitress anytime we wanted anything. Both fish main courses were over cooked and the fillet steak was tough as nails. When we complained they agreed that the steak was fatty and tough and they took it off the bill - apparently. The bill itself was handwritten and therefore could not decipher what they charged us for. On the plus side the menu is varied and food is plentiful and nicely served. Really enjoyed the mussel starter! It is a lovely premises but they need to up their game to ensure they are not another casualty of that location/.
The Step Inn Lounge Restaurant
Enniskerry Road, Stepaside Village, Stepaside, Stepaside, Dublin
Nice pub food but over-priced. Staff are excellent. The place is very open plan so not for an intimate dinner!
The Park Bistro
Fenbyrne House,, Castlepark, Arklow, Wicklow
Lovely restaurant! Such a surprise - needs more publicity! However last night it was full so obviously good word of mouth reputation. The bread was gorgeous and service was top class. Has salmon gradvalax and asian cod from the set menu and couldn't manage a dessert! Will recommend and definitely go back - thanks to staff for b'day glass of bubbly on the house :o)
Prospect Hse, Church Street, Wicklow Town, Wicklow
Wow - better than expected. Food very well presented and a good feed. We had sea bass and the brill which was the fish special for the night - I'd recommend both. Service was excellent and the waiter took time to make recommendations. Early bird seems very good value so hopefully will be back to try. Our meal of 3 starters, 3 mains, 3 desserts and 2 bottles of wine came to €110 which seemed good value - we were stuffed!
Market Square, Wicklow Town, Wicklow
Went for the €50 dinner menu. Excellent value. Both the steak and the salmon were lovely and freshly cooked. Good service and good food and good value - can't go wrong!
33/34 Princes Street, Cork City, Cork
A great buzzy atmosphere attracted us in to queue "not more than 10 mins" turned into 30mins but they kept refilling our glasses with Prosecco so we stayed and waited!! The food was good quality Italian with good sized portions. Great for a night out with something for everyone and friendly staff.
Christys Grill Bar
Blarney Woollen Mills Hotel. Blarney, Blarney, Cork
A good big feed! Relatively plain food but plenty of choice and well cooked - recommend the cod! The place could do with a revamp ...
Cloghroe, Blarney, Cork
Lovely place - a proper Irish restaurant. Prices are high but the food is good quality and service is excellent. Will go back to try the bar food menu!
Mary Anns Bar & Restaurant
Castletownshend, Skibbereen, Skibbereen, Cork
Castletownshend is a gorgeous village with not much except Mary Anns! The seafood here is excellent and really fresh however a bit expensive considering the basic salad accompaniments - could do with nicer leaves and dressing! Well worth a visit - especially when the sun is shining!
Heather House Hotel
Strand Road, Bray, Bray, Wicklow
Had lunch here Bank Hol Monday. Jazz singer on the front deck whcih was nice but we couldn't get seats outside. Inside is a bit dark and caverous but service was excellent all the same. Food a bit pricey for what it is but very nice for pub food. Worth a stroll along the seafront and a pint and bit of pub grub afterwards!
The Old Stand
37 Exchequer Street, City Centre South, Dublin
Proper Dublin pub... homemade simple food, excellent service & all too easy to go in for lunch and stay the afternoon!
La Caverna Restaurant & Wine Bar
12 Fownes Street, Dublin 2, City Centre, Temple Bar, Dublin
Simple food at good prices. Early bird is good value and service is efficient. Don't expect gourmet food - you get what you pay for! However the atmosphere is great and everything certainly appears to be freshly cooked!
Baan Thai (Leopardstown)
Central Park, Block P, Dublin 18, Leopardstown, Dublin
Enjoyed a famiy meal in Baan Thai on Saturday. Something on the menu for everyone and all beautifully presented and served. Portions were huge! Would recommend the mixed starter with a taste of lots of things for a group. One small critisism is that tables should be larger as the amount of plates , glasses, bottles etc make it all very cramped!
Anvil Bistro Restaurant
Saggart Village, Dublin 22, Saggart, Dublin
Often go to the Anvil for lunch. Food is better than average and always homemade. The place is always packed so booking advised!
Market Square Wicklow, Wicklow Town, Wicklow
A bit scruffy and typical Chinese - too much MSG!
Market Square, Wicklow Town, Wicklow
Dinner menu is great value - €21.50 for 3 courses and glass wine/beer! Lovely simple well cooked food - would definitely recommend.
Antonio's Ristorante Italiano
Bridge Street, Wicklow Town, Wicklow
Best and most authentic Italian restaurant in Wicklow. Unusual pastas - try the squid ink pasta with prawns and monk fish - delicious! Lovely premises and the staff are excellent!
The Bay Restaurant @ Walters
68 Georges Street Upper, South Co. Dublin, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin
Early Bird til 7.30pm is great value! Plenty to eat and very good service. Lovely restaurant - will defintely be back...
Purple Ocean Restaurant
St Michael's Pier, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin
Very expensive for A La Carte! Smoked salmon starter was lovely. Scallops very poor for €13.95. Had to send the monk fish back - the portion size was tiny! They claimed it was a "new chef" - did he think it was a starter? Salmon and prawns were nice. Veggies very unimaginative - carrots & broccoli. Overall over-priced for a very simple offering. Might be better going for the early bird or set menus. Lovely location all the same and the service was good.
Church st, Wicklow Town, Wicklow Town, Wicklow
Booked a table for 7.30pm last Saturday. Unfortunately we were the only people there when we arrived! The place is lovely and service was attentive when we arrived (so it should be I guess!) We were given menus but not pointed towards the specials on the board. We winded up both going up to read them before any of the waiters took the initiative to come over and tell us what was written there! The smoked salmon I had to start was too thickly cut but not unpleasant. My friends chowder was "delicious". For main I had turbot which was lovely and accompanied by delicious roasted veg. The fillet steak was edged with a string of fat - not what you would expect for €32e. Desserts were delicious. Overall it was nice but a little over-priced for what we got.
The Strawberry Tree-Brooklodge
The Brooklodge Hotel, Macreddin Village, Aughrim, Wicklow
We booked a late table - 9pm. Unfortunately this made service poor as they seemed to be in the middle of service for other diners. We had to call the waiter in order to get our order taken! When we eventually got fed the food was fabulous - amuse bouche, lovely breads, starter and soup/sorbet, lovely side veg and gorgeous desserts. You won't walk away hungry! Good value for e65.
Tinakilly Country House Hotel & Restaurant, Rathnew, Rathnew, Wicklow
Visited Tinakilly House last night on foot of voucher from MenuPages! Arriving to the house itself is very impressive - beautiful sweeping driveway and building. Inside our coats were taken and pre-dinner drinks served in the welcoming reception hall where a fire was lighting. Service throughout the meal was excellent. However, the dining room was a real let down - more like a dated 3 star hotel than a 4 star country house. The food was generally good but choice somewhat limited. Bread was a little stale, my scallops were served on a cold plate and the veg, although perfectly cooked were unimaginative for the prices they are charging. I will go back but they they need to revamp and refurb the dining room and menu to bring it to 21st century "Blue Book" country house standard.
15 Stephen Lane, Dublin 2, City Centre South, Dublin
Had excellent lunch in Dobbins yesterday. Goats cheese to start was delicious and beautifully served, then salmon to follow. Dessert was the highlight! Only critisism is no veggie option on menu.
Al Muretto - Re located
Forster Court, Galway City, Galway
Went to Al Muretto for Christmas party. Very large restaurant so suitable for a group. Service was slightly slow but an enjoyable meal. Great selection of pastas!
Thai Garden Restaurant (Galway)
Unit 2 Portmore Spanish Arch, Galway City, Galway
Lovely cosy little authentic thai restaurant right in the city centre. Lovely for a meal for 2 or girls night out.
Jamuna Indian Restaurant (wicklow)
1 Lower Mall Wicklow Wicklow, Wicklow Town, Wicklow
Jamuna is a nice change from all the "Italian" restaurants in Wicklow. The restaurant is very comfortable, nicely lit and service is polite (if a little formal). Food is well served and freshly cooked. Great for a group/party. Take away is good also with free bottles of Cobra beer!
The Coffee Shop
Fitzwilliam Square, Wicklow Town, Wicklow
Excellent homemade food - lovely brown bread and salads though the hot food is limited. The service counter is quite squashed so it is chaotic when busy!
Wicklow House, Market Square, Wicklow Town, Wicklow
Buzzing atmosphere! Fairly unexpected as you walk down the stairs into the restaurant. Food is standard Italian with generous portions and fairly good service. Would advise booking at the weekend!
The Market Bar
Fade Street, City Centre South, Dublin
Love the tapas here. Great for a casual meal with friends. The place is big and noisy so best to get here early. Don't wear stilettos when going to the bar downstairs ;o)) you'll have to visit to know what I mean!
The Kingswood Country House Restaurant & Bar
Kingswood House, Kingswood, Naas Rd, Kingswood, Dublin
Grabbed a quick meal in the bar at Kingswood last night. The entire place has been totally modernised and nicely so. Big deck area with decent tables for drinks/food outside. Cod and chucky chips were delicious and their toasted wraps make a substantial snack. Will be back!
7 Ballsbridge Terrace, Dublin, Ballsbridge, Dublin
Rolys for lunch with the girls on Saturday - couldn't fault it! Excellent value for money, the food and service were superb as always. I've been charged more for a pub lunch!
Toscana (Dun Laoghaire)
5 Windsor Terrace, South Co. Dublin , Dun Laoghaire, Dublin
Lovely location on Dun Laoghaire seafront with tables outside on summer evenings. Staff are friendly without being over the top and food is good quality Italian. The chicken wings are delicious and pastas are excellent though my favourite is the seafood kebab! Definitely an above average Italian restaurant!
Sheehans Cafe Bar
20-22 le Road, Blackrock, Blackrock, Dublin
Average bar food. Starters were better than main courses. Service a bit slow. Overall there are better places for a casual meal in Blackrock! However it is a nice bar for a drink - plenty of talent the night we were there for the ladies!
Mao Restaurant (Dun Laoghaire)
The Pavillion, South Co, Dublin, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin
Love the food in Mao! Bright, buzzy restaurant perfect for casual meal out. Not recommended for anyone who doesn't like spicy food!
46-47 Castle Street, South Co. Dublin , Dalkey, Dublin
A very mediocre restaurant - only been when Don G's was full! Food is average, premises a bit uncomfortable .... However the food is standard Italian fare and good value. Good for families with children but nothing outstanding!
Horse & Hound (Dublin)
The Horse & Hound, Cabinteely, Cabinteely, Dublin
The Horse and Hound has changed chefs/menus many times over the last few years. However it is now back on form! Went for a casual bite to eat on Saturday night and was impressed! The menu is standard pub grub but service is friendly and efficient. I had a delicious sea bass fillet (€13.95) and a one of the group was offered a fillet steak (€23) that wasn't on the menu. The food was nicely cooked and served with a good portion of hot chips to share. Overall great value - will be back!
Shanai Indian Cuisine
Old Bray Road, South Dublin, Cabinteely, Dublin
Overall a very disappointing Indian restaurant. Decor is old fashioned, service and food only mediocre. Would not recommend.
The Beacon Hotel, Beacon Court, Dublin 18, Sandyford, Dublin
An amazing place! Went there on Saturday night for dinner and drinks with a friend. The interior is fabulous. We had managed to book a table at 8pm even though they usually prefer to run 2 sittings.
Milano (Clarion Quay)
Unit 6, Excise Walk, Clarion Quay, Dublin 1, City Centre, IFSC, Dublin
I think most people eat in this Milano's on the way to the Point! (That is if you don't work in the IFSC). It is average. Pizzas are tasty but small and scant on filling. You need a starter and a main course! It is a modern restaurant, not the place for a romantic dinner. However service is efficient enough and it is very handy for a pre-Point meal!
Ragazzi Italian Ristorante
109 Coliemore Road, South Co. Dublin, Dalkey, Dublin
Buzzing restaurant! However the waiters are overly sleazy and service can sometimes be slow. The food is nice. Definitely more for a girls night out than a meal for 2!
18-19 Glasthule Road, South Co. Dublin, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin
The best Indian in Dublin! Beautiful surroundings and fabulous food. The Thali is delicious and gives an opportunity to sample a bit of everything - in vegetarian or meat variety. The complimentary nibbles and dips are delicious. Went for a family meal recently and starters took nearly and hour to arrive but I believe this was a one off mishap! Worth the trip to Glasthule!!
The Purty Kitchen (Dun Laoghaire)
3-5 Old Dun Laoghaire Road, Co. Dublin, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin
The best place in Dun Laoghaire/ Monkstown area for seafood! The premises are a pub but you can reserve tables (advised at the weekend). The menu caters for a wide selection and the specials are always good. Atmosphere is informal and there is sometimes live music on Friday nights. Service can be slow and sometimes inefficient. Be advised - main courses are often sparse on accompaniments and staff are not good on advising of same! The mussels are lovely as is the brown bread! Also the chowder is recommended.
4 Village Centre, Main Street, Cabinteely, Cabinteely, Dublin
Have never eaten in but definitely the best Chinese take away around. The fillet beef dishes are lovely and delivery is good. A little more expensive then competitors but worth it for the quality...
Palmers - The Golden Ball
The Golden Ball, Kilternan, Dublin
Have only tried the Indian takeaway service from Palmers. It was really good. 3 starters, 3 mains, rice and naan for just over €40 - delivered too! Plus we got a free bottle of wine! Nice menu with rating of hotness and also a section of low fat options. Delivery was good - though it was only up the road to Stepaside!
3a The Crescent Monkstown, South Co. Dublin, Monkstown, Dublin
Although the FXB name is synonymies with steaks don't be fooled! They also have good fish options too! Downstairs in the pub is great for a casual bar meal and unlike other pubs the tables are comfortable and at the right height (nothing worse than having to eat scrunched up off a low table!) The tapas are lovely and 3 tapas give a decent feed - especially with the lovely warm soft bread that accompanies. Upstairs in the restaurant nice touches like a selection of bread with butter and dips come complementary. However it is one of those restaurants which charges extra for veg - why oh why...? Having said that the flavour of their steaks is the best around!
Kilmacanogue, Bray, Bray, Wicklow
Avoca in Kilmac is a great place for a wholesome lunch after a walk up the Sugarloaf!
Bits and Pizzas
15 Patrick Street, Dun Laoghaire, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin
Great pizzas! Freshly cooked in the pizza oven. Service can be a bit hap-hazzard. Great for a casual night out - before the cinema or with the kids. The BBQ pizza is fab!
The Lotts Cafe Bar
9 Lower Liffey Street, City Centre North, Dublin
What a find! Often a shopping trip on the north side of the city is ruined by the pathetic choice of eateries for a reviving lunch. However on New Years Eve we happened upon Lotts. Large leather couches and an innovative menu. Soup of the day was served with warm crusty bread and the chilli chicken salad was a meal in itself! Service was friendly and excellent. Will definitely be back!
Jaipur Restaurant (Dalkey)
21 Castle Street, South Co. Dublin, Dalkey, Dublin
Visited Jaipur last night. Lovely food - though heavily over-priced. €12.50 for a prawn, a sliver of chicken breast, piece of lamb and a cube of fish! Admittedly it was beautifully flavoured and presented. Also why do most Indian & Thai restaurants charge extra for rice? Surely it should be included in the main course price??
