It wouldn't usually be our first choice to eat in a hotel when we are not staying there, but we were redirected here by a nearby restaurant that was full. We decided to give it a try and were very impressed! We felt totally pampered, the service was brilliant, the food delicious and the bill very reasonable (€88 for 2 starters, 2 mains, 1 desert, 1 tea and a bottle of house wine). We couldn't believe it was so quiet for a Friday night (1 other couple and a group): with such lovely service and food the place should be packed. We will definitely go back!

The Strawberry Tree-Brooklodge
The Brooklodge Hotel, Macreddin Village, Aughrim, Wicklow

Exquisite is probably the best word to describe the food here. I had brie on polenta for starters, hubby had smoked salmon which was the most tender smoked salmon I ever tasted. My monkfish main with lentils was excellent, but I was slightly jealous of hubby's garlic roasted chicken as this was simply mouth-watering. However I can't even remember what hubby's dessert was as my banana-bread honeycomb Baked Alaska topped it all off for me: I'm not a dessert person but this swayed me completely... Staff was extremely professional and friendly as well. Can't fault this restaurant on anything, apart maybe on price as it is really quite expensive, including their wines. Although with all food being organic and considering it is cooked to perfection, it is really worth it...

Crazy Crab Cafe Bistro
Kilmore Quay, Kilmore, Wexford

We found Crazy Crab by chance when visiting in Co. Wexford this weekend. Initially the outside of the restaurant didn't appeal to us as we thought it looked like a chipper, however when we had a quick glance on the menu we decided to go in, and what a good decision that was! Interior looked fresh and trendy, staff was friendly and the restaurant has amazing views of the sea. We both had a starter and a main, all dishes were extremely generous and you could tell only the freshest ingredients were used. We liked the finishing touches such as the homemade salsa that came with the fish cakes and the homemade chips. The bill came to just under €40 which was excellent value for money. It's such a pity we don't live locally otherwise we would return here regularly!

Downstairs Restaurant
Gilbert & Wright, Hollybrook Park, Dublin 3, Clontarf, Dublin

First time visit and will definitely return: we couldn't fail them on anything: food tasted excellent and was very well presented; staff was very professional, friendly and honest: our Waiter told us the wine we initially chose wouldn't be his first choice and he recommended a different (and cheaper) one that better suited our meal, plus the hubby was informed straight after ordering that his pint was on the way but they had to install a new keg first, which we thought was very attentive and professional as we probably wouldn't even have noticed the wait. Lastly the atmosphere was also very good: we had a 8:30 table which is slightly later than we would usually start however the restaurant actually filled up even more after we arrived and was still packed when we left around 11pm. And with the 20% discount voucher for Sunday lunch we received with our bill, we will definitely return!

The Brass Monkey
12 West Pier, Dublin 13, Howth, Dublin

Went here for a late lunch. The service although slow was good, the staff was very friendly. The food however didn't live up to our expectations. We ordered a range of dishes to share as tapas. The seafood chowder and soup of the day were good, however the prawns in kataifi pastry and the calamari were both overcooked and very dry and the duck spring roles also lacked flavour. Will give them the benefit of the doubt but don't think we'll be returning any time soon.

McHugh’s Wine & Dine Restaurant
59 St. Assam's Park, Dublin 5, Raheny, Dublin

We had a family dinner in this restaurant about a year ago and although fine, we weren't overly impressed with the menu choice (just 1 fish dish on the menu at the time), value and service. We decided to give them another go and what a difference! Service was very friendly, they were there when we needed them but also left us alone to recuperate inbetween servings. Atmosphere was pleasant and even on a Monday night there were plenty of tables occupied. Food, very good (me: Waldorf salad and salmon special of the day; partner: loin of rabbit and duck breast, with a shared cheese platter). Bill: more than reasonable. All in all, we're glad we gave them another chance, and will be back.

Octopussy Seafood Tapas
7 West Pier, Dublin 13, Howth, Dublin

Nice little restaurant, food was excellent and reasonably priced, everything was simply gorgeous and much better than a 'tapas rival' along the pier. Service could have been slightly better, friendly waitress, but there was only a handful of people there and we had to ask her for extra bread and napkins twice before we got them. We would also recommend them to offer bowls with water to wash your hands as the menu does contain some sticky 'fingerfood' such as the prawns and chickenwings. The only real negative about this place we would say is that it is so small that all kitchen aroma's (as nice as they are) really get into your clothes and as there is no seperate cloakroom, our coats had a distinctive smell of deep fry the following day...

The Port House
64a South William Street, Dublin 2, City Centre South, Dublin

As usual, the food, service and atmosphere were fantastic. Excellent value for money, we shared 5 tapas between the two of us and had 2 drinks for €35 all together. Brilliant. I would highly recommend visiting this place. My only point of critisism would be that if you are seated close to the toilets, that you might get the odd smell of toilet duck.. Other than that, a little gem!

ely bar & brasserie
CHQ Building, Georges Dock, Dublin 1, City Centre, IFSC, Dublin

We visited the IFSC Christmas market last weekend and decided to pop into Ely for a drink afterwards. Never been in the place, nice atmosphere but we weren't overly impressed with the service and prices. We ordered a glass of red house wine and a Guinness and although it wasn't busy, we had to wait quite a long time at the bar before 1) the bartender took notice of our presence and 2) our drinks were ready (taking Guiness settling time into account). We were planning to have a few drinks, but as the Guinness wasn't as creamy as it should be and we were charged €7.50 for the glass of wine (which we thought was very expensive for a glass of house wine), we left and had our second drink elsewhere.

The Elphin
36 Baldoyle Road, Sutton, Dublin

As The Elphin is quite local to us, we go here for a drink regularly and have probably eaten here now about 4 or 5 times. And every time we are amazed about the quality and quantity of the food! Everything we have tried on the menu so far was absolutely delicious, all homemade and large portions. I would highly recommend the sole or the fillet steak with homemade onion rings, to die for! Atmosphere is good and service is great, it's done up nicely which gives the place a classy feel, definitely a step up from your average pub. And the food is absolutely not pub-grub, but 4-star quality so we will definitely keep coming back here!

The Oar House Fish Restaurant
8 West Pier, North Co. Dublin, Howth, Dublin

I brought my mum here 2 weeks ago and had great expectations after reading all the raving reviews. Unfortunately, although it wasn't bad, we were quite disappointed. Our table right at the door wasn't great as the majority if incoming and outgoing guests clearly did not pay any attention to the sign on the double doors asking to close one door first before opening the next. As a result we got a blast of cold wind every time someone opened the doors. Also when we put our order in, the waitress did not ask us if we wanted to order a drink, so I had to call her back myself to order the wine which I found very odd. We ordered Sizzling Skewered Prawns, Crab Mushroom, Steamed Mussels and the Antipasto platter to share between us. We only realised when we had finished them that we didn't get the Skewered Prawns but the Buffalo Prawns, which didn't really bother us as we both love prawns but it was a stupid mistake and we did think the Buffalo Prawns were very tough. The Crab Mushroom was lovely if it wouldn't have been for the think layer of melted cheddar cheese on top (i know it says Parmesan on the menu but this definitely wasn't Parmesan!). The Antipasto platter was a pure disappointment: I have never seen an Antipasto which such a lack of imagination, just 2 cheeses (not even Spanish) and 2 meats and a whole lot of lettuce to fill the rest of the plate. Not nice. The only dish we really loved were the steamed mussels: there were loads of them and the sauce was gorgeous. We are both tapas lovers and have eaten in various tapas restaurants here and abroad and I can honestly say that what we got in the Oar House were not Spanish tapas, I would call it glorified Irish finger food, and wonder if the other visitors realise what real Spanish tapas are. Sorry people, I'm not picky when it comes to restaurants but I won't come back here.
