Great Sunday lunch today at Becketts. The lunch menu was extensive; I had the Salmon with curried creme fraiche t start, which was nicely flavoured, not overpowering. The duck for the main course was superb, and good-sized portiion. The others had John Dory, Steak, and pork cutlets, all were very happy. The only complaint was about the sweetness of the polenta under the cod fillet, which was too much. The kids were also very happy with their meals. Overall, we had a great meal and at a great price.

Barracuda
Strand Road, Bray, Wicklow

Sunday Lunch with the kids. Great views of the sea, which help distract from the food, particularly the kids menu. Now, kid's menus in general are weak in this country but this was weak. The chicken nuggets were not too bad, but the chips that accompanied them were over salted. The sausage and mash was just that, bland and disappointing. The spaghetti and tomato sauce was also bland, but this time overly sweet. The grown-up food was better, but the "fish-bake" was pieces of salmon and cod and white sauce, sprinkled with breadcrumbs and parmesan. Over-seasoned and not even a piece of bread to mop up. The Créme brulée was nice, but didn't benefit the addition of strawberry. Adequate, but no more.

Bite - New Location Opening Soon!
29 South Frederick Street, Dublin 2, City Centre South, Dublin

Good cocktail, very friendly and helpful staff, but the real highlight is the food. A change from the run-of-the-mill salmon and cod, we had soft-shell crab, scallops and lobster burger. Great quality fish and well balanced dishes. The desserts were also good, especially the espresso panna cotta. Good value overall. The room was bit dark and busy, but the food is worth it.

The Arch Bistro
Above the Glenside Pub, Landscape Road, South Dublin, Churchtown, Dublin

Very good food, much better that you would expect for a suburban pub. Great attention to detail on the plate in terms of ingredients and presentation. The pork belly was excellent and the lunch menu was varied and great value. They ran out of the dessert I was hoping for, but I was very happy with the rest. The kids menu is simple, but again the dishes are all home-made and not a breaded chicken nugget in sight. I would recommend it, especially if you're in the area.

Breathnachs Bar
The Square, Oughterard, Oughterard, Galway

We had dinner there on Saturday evening. It was busy, even at 6pm and it took some time to get seated. They staff were friendly and helpful, but they were under a bit of pressure. We had to ask twice for water and some items on the bill were incorrect. The food was simple but good and freshly cooked. It was above average for pub food and good value too.

The Strawberry Tree-Brooklodge
The Brooklodge Hotel, Macreddin Village, Aughrim, Wicklow

We stayed in the Brooklodge hotel and dined in the Strawberry Tree on Saturday night. The food was outstanding and very good value for a 4-course meal. They overdo the emphasis on the organic nature of the ingredients, but the dishes were excellent and the ingredients clearly very fresh, I had the pork belly and loin for the main course and it was one of the best dishes I've ever had! The desserts were also excellent. I would return to the restaurent, but not the hotel.

The Cottage Bar (Salthill)
76 Lower Salthill, Salthill, Galway

Stopped for a bite with the kids on the way home. The place was not busy, but the staff seemed under pressure. The food was better than expected, especially the chicken goujons the kids had. It would be a good spot for a night out without them though. Good value for money too.

The Kingswood Country House Restaurant & Bar
Kingswood House, Kingswood, Naas Rd, Kingswood, Dublin

We eat in the bar here for lunch on the Sunday after New Year and we were the only ones in in the place. The food was standard pub grub but good value, particularly the kids portions. We will be back to try the restaurant some time.

Patrick Guilbaud
21 Upper Merrion Street, Dublin, City Centre South, Dublin

We visited on Saturday night for dinner. The atmosphere was very classy and cool and the staff were excellent, casual yet very competent. We went for the a la carte menu, with the signature whole duck for the main. We had a foie gras terrine and the crubeens to start, the later a definite winner. The duck, carved at the table was good, but not spectacular. The deserts were excellent, the chocolate medley in particular. Throughout the meal, the maitre'd and sommelier were excellent, offering advice but never intruding. For the price we paid and reputation, I expected more from the food, but the overall experience was superb. My duck is better!

Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK South Anne Street)
5 South Anne Street, Dublin 2, City Centre South, Dublin

We had the Sunday lunch with our daughter last week. The place was busy enough and we had to wait to be seated by the service was attentive and polite. The burgers are over priced on the menu but the 2-for-1 offer on Sundays makes up for it. The food was OK, a wide variety on the menu of different burgers seem to refer only to the sauce that they add; the patties and buns are standard. My cajun was spicier that I expected with was a nice surprise, as was the chicken burger that arrived for my daughter. Very tender chicken peices in a light breadcrumb. I would like to the a smaller menu with more variation on the burgers that just different sauces. Overall, reasonable value with the special offer, but not a big draw.

El Bahia Moroccan Restaurant
37 Wicklow Street, Dublin 2, City Centre South, Dublin

We had an early bird dinner on Friday evening. I started with the Harira soup to start followed by the classic kefta tagine with eggs. The food was excellent, and our plates were cleaned. We skipped the dessert and had some mint tea instead, very refreshing. The atmosphere was muted, hardly surprising that early, but the food was very good. The whole meal came to about €60 including wine, at that price it can't be beat.

Talavera Restaurant
Radisson Blu, St Helen's Hotel, Stillorgan Road, Stillorgan, Dublin

I had a meal with work colleagues last night and I'm glad I wasn't paying. The starters were mostly about €10, the main courses €20-€30. I had the buffet to start which was nice but seemed incomplete; not enough plain veg, salads, bread. I had the cod in herb crust for main; the cod was nice but not special and the herb crust wasn't crisp enough. The side dishes of fries, potatoes and beans were, again, nice, but not special at €5 apiece. Over all I like the atmosphere, and the food was satisfactory but it was over-priced for what we got.

Carluccio's Caffe
52 Dawson Street, Dublin 2 , City Centre South, Dublin

Went for a late lunch on St Patricks day with a large party. The service was friendly and coped well our large party including a number of children. The food was OK, but pricey for what was essentially café fare. The prosciutto and parmesan starter was a bit of a joke for €6, 4 breadstick with a slice of prosciutto wrapped around one end, and a few lumps of parmesan, and balsamic to dip in. The calamari was tasty, but tough. The kids were happy with their food though and the desserts were good. Overall a satisfying meal, but poor value.

Guinea Pig
17 Railway Road, South Co. Dublin, Dalkey, Dublin

Dined there on Sunday evening and managed to avail of the Early Bird menu. There were very few items on the A La Carte that weren't on the Early Bird which was a nice surprise. The food was good, if a bit simple. The calamaris to start were particularly good, but the breaded mushrooms and the paté were ordinary. The Lamb was superb, but the fish and chips were slightly disappointing. The fish was in breadcrumbs where we had been expecting batter, and the chips were good but frozen. The room is small and there was a loud, noisy, party at one of them, but probably not the norm. I was expecting more at the Guinea Pig from the food, but the value was excellent.

Lemongrass (Liffey Valley)
Arc Bar, Liffey Valley Centre, West Dublin, Lucan, Dublin

We went for Sunday lunch last week. They have a great deal on with a free childs meal with each adult meal. Unfortunately we went for the disappointing "bento box", which was just a gimmick. It seems to be an excuse to serve small portions because it comes in a wooden box, and charge you €15 for the priviledge The "dessert" was a 5 small slices of melon and papaya! The other mains seemed to be good value and the kids menu is more varied than most. We will probably go again.

La Mere Zou
22 St Stephens Green, Dublin , City Centre South, Dublin

Great meal! We had the Christmas menu which was a nice change. The food was delicious as always. The Chicken Liver parfait was great if a bit rich, the Black pudding salad was superb. The main courses were excellent, but by then the place was full of Christmas parties and the noise drowned out mostof our conversation. Get a table in the corner if you can.
