Restaurant Reviews from The Waddler
Marco Pierre White Courtyard Bar & Grill restaurant
1 Belmont Ave, Dublin 4, Donnybrook, Dublin, Area Code:
Reviewed 14th September 2015 ( visited 13th September 2015 )Three of us enjoyed a great meal last night. Two of us had the shrimp starter which was lovely and the celery soup was spot on. The steak mains was perfectly prepared. The lamb dish and pork meal went down a treat, although a little more on the plates would be appreciated. Desert of rhubarb crumble was very good. The two waiters who served us were polite and efficient, although the waitress was a little careless and perhaps could slow down in her approach, especially as the restaurant was not busy. In any event the meal was really enjoyable and the restaurant still remains one of my absolute favourites.
Toscana (Dun Laoghaire) restaurant

Reviewed 04th April 2014 ( visited 02nd April 2014 )We had a Menupages voucher. The service was good. I had the Calamari and my partner the Brushetta. Both were very good and well presented. For mains we had Raviolli, which was excellent and the Venison, which was not as tender as expected but very tasty. The meringue desert was adequate. With the voucher it was good value, but if we had paid full price the gloss may have been taken off.

We dined as a party of four. We had the pate and aubergine dishes shared for starters and both were excellent. The Veal champignon was really nice, steak was super as we\'re the shrimp and chicken meals. The house red wine was really enjoyed and we finished with the gateau and creme brule. The staff throughout were attentuve and professional and overall we had no issues at all with the meal and everyone had an enjoyable evening. Recommended.

Had dinner for three. Two were on a voucher and the third had the garlic bread and curry. Great portions and really tasty. The voucher covered the chicken wings and a fillet steak (€3 supplement). The wings were superb and the steak done to perfection. Both courses were of excellent quality. The other meal was the salad followed by the a pasta dish. Both were substantial and really tasty. Dessert of cheese cake finished off a super meal. The waiter service was polite and professional. A great experience all round. Highly recommended.

Called in a party of three. Two had a voucher. The restaurant was packed and the atmosphere was good. Starters were 2 goats cheese salads and the other was prawns. These were very good and promptly delivered. Mains were 2 chickens and a boeuf. The chicken mains went down a treat and the darne de boeuf had a lovely flavour, although a little too fatty. Deserts of cheesecake and blueberry tart were excellent. Being served by 6 waiting staff who, except for one were really pleasant, was a little strange, as there did not seem to be allocated staff to tables. Overall a really nice experience and good value with a Menupages voucher
South George's Street, Dublin, City Centre South, Dublin
Went on a Taste.ie voucher. Starter of Tempura of Salmon was really good.... For mains I had the beef rolls with an excellent salad. Beef is cooked on a stone at the table and was very tender. The other mains was the penne pesto which went down a treat. The knickerbocker glory burst was well put together and had good texture. Excellent value. The restaurant seems to be undergoing an upgrade to its decor and will benefit from it.
St Andrew Street, Dublin 2, City Centre South, Dublin
Four of us dined on a Saturday night. 2 had the goats cheese starters and 2 risotto. All were very satisfied and the goats cheese in particular was a good proportion. Mains were Chateaubriand .. Really nice, chicken which was tasteless and basic and I had the sirloin steak which tasted good but was quite tough. Deserts of crepes were particularly poor... Cold and hard and the service was hit and miss. Ice cream was ice cream. With a bottle of wine and a bill exceeding €200 it was not an experience to be repeated.

Everything about the place impressed. It was really busy and we were seated immediately and looked after very professionally. The service was both friendly and efficient. I had the fish and chips and my partner the quiche. Both meals were well presented and of a very high quality. Unusually for us we both produced clean dishes and felt compelled to complement the staff on the high quality of the food presented. The cost was very reasonable and the efficiency of the staff was impressive. The decor is attractive and the outside dining areas are as welcoming as inside....well done
Da Mimmo Restaurant

Called in with 3 others before a match in Croker. This place always seems to be busy, and now I'm surprised. Although its located on a busy street it's local feel and amazingly good food are real attractions. The four meals of pizza and pasta dishes were of excellent quality. The service was great and the value exceptional. Yes it's popularity is well deserved

We visited on a busy Saturday evening. The restaurant was very busy but the staff coped well and were pleasant and professional. Although we had not booked and had to wait for 25 minutes for a table, this was reasonable. We both had a chicken dish at a nice table and it was well presented and tasty. Accompanying vegetables were well prepared and the over all experience was very positive.
Marco Pierre White Courtyard Bar & Grill

Just about a perfect evening. Atmosphere, service, ambience and, of course the food were excellent. 4 of us had starters of beet root/goats cheese, soup, and 2 calamari...all brilliant. Mains were steak done perfectly, duck and the burger dishes were superb and I had the liver which was excellent. With three desserts of the finest quality and a bill of just over €100... It's added up to an amazing experience. Unqualified recommendation.
The Box Tree
Stepaside Village, South Dublin, Stepaside, Dublin
The restaurant has been getting positive reviews and I do not propose to buck the trend. The food is excellent, the atmosphere is pleasant and the service good. My group had the foie gras (excellent), fish cakes ...good, sole tempura good and goat’s cheeses brilliantly presented and excellent. The mains included the Special steak, venison, duck, cod and also chicken. The presentation was super and all were happy with the taste and texture of the food. However with the exception of the steak eater all were disappointed with the very small portions served and two of the company have small appetites. The prices are on the high side and the unfortunate point is that 4 out of 5 left the restaurant still a little hungry.
Weafer & Cooper

I've never written a review before where all we had was COFFEE!!!! When the three of us arrived, there seemed to be a contretemps with the diminutive waiter/manager, wearing jeans, and two mature ladies. He was trying to convince them to have lunch instead of the order of a pastry. They were not happy. When he came to serve us and we ordered three coffees, he said he would not make much money out of customers like us!! Nice welcome....I said he shouldn't show such disapointment with our order as there is a huge mark up on coffee. He suggested that we also should have lunch. No thanks.....Service...I dont think so, three three of us left in disgust.
Low Street, Thomastown, Kilkenny
Booked a table for 5.30pm, as tables were only available for 5.30 or 8.30. Four of us dined and had starters, mains and a couple of deserts. Service, for the most part was prompt and the food (starters of fish cakes, cheese etc) pork belly, chicken pasta, cannaloni etc.) was tasty, reasonably well presented, but were not big portions. We had French Muscadet @ €23 a bottle, some deserts and a coffee and @ €136 was neither good value or too expensive. The big dissapointment for us was the rush to get us out. Dishes were removed before all at the table were finished their corse. On one occasion an attempt was made to take a desert dish before it was finished. The bill was presented before we were finished and and altouugh were were there for only 1 and 3/4 hours were were politely asked to vacate our table. When it was pointed out to the management that we felt uncomforable for the duration of the meal because of the rush tactics he apologised...but it seriousely let the restaurant down.
Toscana (Dun Laoghaire)
5 Windsor Terrace, South Co. Dublin , Dun Laoghaire, Dublin
Had a meal in a party of four. Starters were bruschetta x 2, meatballs and calamari. All were very good although the calamari were not coated, which would have been preferred. Mains were Rigotoni, Lasagne x 2 and a chicken dish and four clean plates were the result. Really good. 2 deserts Chocolate gateau and Profiteroles which went down well. The service was very good and conversational and the ambiance was pleasing and comfortable. Venue was busy...very good sign for a Wednesday. With a half bottle of wine and a coffee, a bill of €119 was very reasonable. Highly recommended.
4 Rathfarnham Road, Dublin 6W, Terenure, Dublin
Booked for Sunday evening and was surprised as to how busy it was. Good Sign. We were a party of 4 and 2 had a voucher. For starters we had Caesar Salad (very good), Ribs (Loads) Chicken wings x 2 which were very enjoyable. For mains we had Fillet Steak, T Bone and a sirloin...all were excellent with lovely chunky chips and a Carbonara, which was very substantial, with perhaps a little to much bacon (better than too little, I suppose!!!). Dessert was triple Swiss Chocolate Gateaux x 2 and Cheesecake...all really nice. Tea + Coffee. €54 on top of the voucher for 2 was excellent value with good service and atmosphere. Definitely Recommended
FIRE Restaurant and Lounge
Mansion House, Dawson Street, Dublin 2, Dawson Street, Dublin
Visited on Thursday with a large group of work colleagues. I had the figs to start, which were tasty, a little cool and quite small. The steak was done perfectly but the 'fat' chips were just that and had little taste. The onion in batter was ok. For my desert I had the raspberry cheesecake which was very nice but the raspberries were frozen inside. The price was excessive for the meals presented. Atmosphere was good and staff were attentive.
18 Dame Street,, Dublin 2, City Centre South, Dublin
Booked with a voucher and dined on Saturday evening. My partner had the Soup which was lovely and I the tiger prawns, nicely presented and very tasty but I would have liked more. I had the pork and goats cheese for mains, which again was tasty, but the portion was far too small. My partner’s vegetable lasagne was acceptable. The 'Italian’ Meringue for desert was not of restaurant standard. Service was good but the noise in the restaurant was oppressive, and conversation, even between two, was difficult. Not a venue for a quiet meal and don’t expect to come out full!
The Arch Bistro
Above the Glenside Pub, Landscape Road, South Dublin, Churchtown, Dublin
I called on Friday evening in a party of four. The restaurant was bury and there was a good atmosphere. Three dined from the Al a carte menu and the fourth had the dinner menu. I had the goat's chees mousse to start and the rib eye steak as a mains. Both were excellent, the steak done perfectly, and for dessert the apple crumble was also top class. My dining partners had fish cakes, venison and chicken and all were really happy with both the food and the presentation. The service was to a high standard. We felt the price at around 30-35 euro each for three courses, without drinks, to be reasonable. Highly recommended.
92 Terenure Road North, Dublin 6W, Terenure, Dublin
Had a late lunch on Sunday. My partner had just starters of Crostini al salmone and I had mains of Rigatoni con polpettine. The service initially was fine but when I went to pay the bill I had a wait. The food was average ( the meat balls were a little hard) and as there was only a couple of customers the atomosphere was flat. The price was not inexpensive for what was ordered.
Good World Chinese Restaurant
18 South Great Georges Street, Dublin 2 , City Centre South, Dublin
Went with 2 friends today for lunch. Restaurant was busy so we were brought downstairs to a room where we were alone for most of the meal. This was really the only downside. Starters ...ribs and spring rolls were good. Mains of shrimp x 2 and duck was also good and the fritters and ice cream for desert was reasonable. The set lunch price is good value and the service was efficient.
O'Connells Restaurant Donnybrook
135 Morehampton Road, Donnybrook, D04 HX46, Donnybrook, Dublin
Visited on Saturday as a party of 5. I had been there before. The menu is extensive and we all had different starters and everyone enjoyed them immensely. My main was the lamb kidneys, which were very good and others had plaice and chicken. The fish was well presented and tasted perfect and the chicken, which was carved beside the table (a lovely touch), was excellent. The vegetables came in pot like containers were also really tasty. All enjoyed the 2 pot deserts and the accompanying white sauvignon was a hit. The staff were top notch and the price, I felt, represented really good value and we will definitely return.
The Green Hen
33 Exchequer street, Dublin 2, City Centre South, Dublin
As a party of three we visited the restaurant for lunch today.... We had 3 starters...2 had the Goats cheese which was very good. One of us had the burger, which was also good, and chips were spot on, and the serving was generous. The venison was really good and very satisfying and the fish went down well. The service was excellent; Dessert was Pavlova for me, which was dissapointing. far too sticky and hard but the other desserts were enjoyed. Reasonable value at €18 each. Nice atmosphere. Recommended.
Fallon and Byrne
11-17 Exchequer Street, Dublin 2, City Centre South, Dublin
Called on Friday with two friends and dined off the pre theatre menu. I had the fish starter which was very good. I followed this with the rib eye steak for mains, which was done perfectly. Dessert was a knickerbocker glory which was good. None of us had a drink. The service was excellent and the price of c. €28 each was very good value. Highly recommended. Will be back.
China Buffet King
Cinema Building, Dundrum Town Centre, Sandyford Road, Dundrum, Dublin
Called at 9pm on Friday and was told that they were closing at 10pm. The buffet was not very well stocked and some of the dishes were just luke warm. The food however was tasty, but the 'end of night atomosphere' was offputting. Desserts were almost non existant. Service was friendly but at nearly €20 each, I did not consider the meal good value.
Ballinteer Avenue, Dublin 16, Ballinteer, Dublin
Had dinner last evening. We had 2 chicken dishes, which by pub standards were very good. The staff were excellent, professional and friendly. Very good value and tasty wholesome food
Chapel Street, Castlebar, Mayo
The restaurant is a pleasant well set out place. The staff, we found to be friendly and very professional. I had the mushroom/cheese starter, which was tasty but texture was a little flat. My partner's salad was good. I had the steak which was properly prepared and really good and the chicken was excellent. The vegetables and potatoes were beautiful. Dessert of chocolate bread and butter pudding was very nice. Only one beer was consumed and the bill of €56 was reasonable. A well run establishment, with good staff and well prepared food...highly recommended.
Cookes Restaurant & Wine Bar
28 Upr Abbeygate Street, Galway City, Galway
This is a quaint well laid out restaurant. Jazz music is provided later in the evening. Food, for the three courses was well prepared, although the tapas/paté starter for two would not be to everyone's taste. Medium prices make it a reasonable cost and service was excellent. Recommended.
il Divo Restaurant
2 Terenure Road East, (Above Comans), Rathgar, Dublin
The decor is pleasant and the service reasonable. Five of us dined and we found the food tasty and well presented. One diner had the soup which was very thick vegetable and, although it was fine was not to his taste. The waiter without being prompted deducted the cost from the bill, which I felt was extremely professional. I would recommend the restaurant for good value food and in pleasant surroundings.
38 - 40 Parliament Street, City Centre South, Dublin
Dined here with friends on Friday afternoon for lunch. We decided to try it as we are long term customers of the 'original' Salamanca. The ambience is great and so also the service. Three of us had the steak and it is similar to the fare in S. Andrew St. The portions are, however, smaller, and this is compensated by the fact that the charge is €2 less that the other restaurant. Although I think it is better to leave satisfied that not for such a small amount. Deserts also are not substantial and a review of this policy may be useful. Overall it was reasonable value.
The Atrium Lounge
The Westin Hotel, College Green, Dublin, City Centre South, Dublin
I visited here with two friends today, having been here on a few occasions before. As other reviewers have mentioned the atmosphere is so relaxing and comfortable. It is not really the place for a ‘session’, not only because it is not cheap for drink but because it is more suitable for a quiet relaxing drink or snack. The service is very good and we had 2 small scones each, butter, jam and cream and coffees. All was presented beautifully. The cost was €30. This is not unreasonable considering the surroundings and the quality. Recommended.
Millstone, A Dublin Restaurant
39 Dame Street, Dublin 2, City Centre South, Dublin
A gang of 16 of us had our Christmas lunch here and it went down very well. The menu was varied and I had for the first time Goose. It was well prepared, very well presented and others who also had it enjoyed it as well. Live music played at a comfortable level and this created a nice atmosphere. A variety of deserts were consumed and most were pleased. A complementary drink was provided and our meal was considered reasonable value.
The Dropping Well
Classon's Bridge, Milltown, Milltown, Dublin
Dined here again this evening and had four main courses. The special was beef strogonoff which I had and it was good, but the portion was not large. My companions had chilli con carne, fish and lasagne and all were pleased. Service was great and very friendly and we had two drinks each--everything came to €88 which we felt was reasonable. Recommended for good value food but a special occasion;; perhaps??
Siam Thai (Dundrum)
Dundrum Town Centre, South Dublin, Dundrum, Dublin
After reading several reasonably positive reviewsmy wife and I were looking forward to my visit on Friday, with two friends. The restaurant was very busy but yet the service was not slow. The duck spring roll starters were good as was the sesame toast. The other starters wer just adequate. The Jumbo prawns for main course were dissappointing with little taste from the dish and so also were two of the other three meals. Half way through desert (Pavlova was substantial but bland) we were advised that the table would have to be vacated very shortly and coffee was a little rushed to facilite another sitting at 9.30pm. For a cheaper restaurant I would not have been unhappy but for c.€50 a head (1 bottle of wine and a couple of beers) I felt that this restaurant should have been a lot better for the price charged.
1 St Andrews Street, Dublin 2, City Centre South, Dublin
After being a long term customer of the restaurant and having been disappointed on the last occasion with the price increases and reduction in value I returned with five friends on Friday, after six months and had lunch on a busy afternoon. We were pleased with the new pricing structure and delighted with the quality of the food served. I had the chicken wings to start and the steak for mains and it was substantial and the rest of the party was also happy with the fare. Service, as usual, was good. I’m happy to be able to recommend Salamanca again.
The Pig's Ear
4 Nassau Street, Dublin, City Centre South, Dublin
Called with three friends for lunch on Friday and dined off the lunch menu. One had a starter (the crab mayonnaise...really goood) and the rest had the dessert option. A friend and I had the venison for mains and were very pleasantly surprised with it's texture and rich taste. It's presentation also was good. For desert we had the trifle with real fruit..excellent. After my previous slightly disappointing experience here, this visit was a real pleasure and to top it all the service matched the food. Recommended.
