We stopped in on our way back up from Beara Peninsula to get energy up for drive to Dublin. Very warm welcome from barman/waiter and we were sat by the door. Very pleasant breeze from hot street outside aided thirst. It was great being able to have a pint but the range of wines by the glass on offer proved far more attractive for some. The highlight had to be the crispy chips. They were just stunning. The fish dishes (halibut and turbot I think) were a hit. My burger was a delight, I liked the fact that the bun was a small one meaning less bread and more meat. Really set us up for the drive home and was a lovely bookend to trip down South. Highly recommended.

Huge disappointment. I had gone to La Marine (the bistro) on what I had read here. I booked dinner for two at 19:00. 3 people came up to us before we were ready to even look at a menu (about 5 minutes of chatting) asking if we were ready to order our food. This was to be the theme until we actually needed some attention which leads me to the major complaint of the evening: Our order was taken at 19:10. By 19:50 they had served all three courses and cleared away! We were not made to feel comfortable or settled. I understand two sittings but the next sitting was not until 21:00! We had to wait 20 minutes after getting the bill for someone to come over with the card machine. This may not seem like a long time but remember: that is half the time they took to feed us. The wine was overpriced for a particularly tart Syrah. A bad wine worsened by the fact that it was served too cold. The glasses of Cremant we had before our starter were rather chemical resulting in unpleasantly sharp flavours. Actually this is worth repeating: We ordered food and wine at ten past seven, including the glass of cremant (that was not an aperitif seeing as the starters hit the table halfway through) and it took 40 mins to bring matters to a close. I would not recommend this place for a couple. I would not recommend it for people who want to take the full two hours before the next sitting or enjoy their food. I would especially not recommend it for the food! the crab meat was pulverised to resemble sausage filling – very unappealing; salads from starters being transferred to mains – lazy cooking; dull 'new season' asparagus – why a blowtorch was passed over the insipid hollandaise remains a mystery (as to the addition of orange pieces? Pointless at best! The asparagus was also burned and chopped too small). Avoid if at all possible.

The older part of the restaurant is lovely, the new extension (as posted by She on the 27th of Feb 09) was not very inviting looking at all. We ended up on the first floor in the centre table. A group of four we had plenty of space both on and around the table. Really friendly staff and very attentive. Great brown bread and rolls (more provided for the hungry travellers without us even asking, a nice touch). We all went for the two course early bird (starter and main). Very good value for some lovely food. There was a bit of an odd moment when the Butternut Ravioli was served with mashed spuds. It seemed a bit of stodge overkill. Lovely food though. My chicken was superb and the veg side dishes were properly crunchy. All in all, I highly recommend eating here but only if you can get in the front/old part.

Fallon and Byrne
11-17 Exchequer Street, Dublin 2, City Centre South, Dublin

Like a little bit of New York in Dublin! Apart from the overcooked duck that myself and one other patron had the food was superb (the duck still tasted fine, it did go cold very quickly however. Possibly under lights for too long before serving?). The venison deserves a special mention. The roast veg side order was genuinely one of the best things I have eaten in a long time. Perfect winter flavours that went perfectly with the venison and duck. Special mention must be made of the very attentive staff. Very expensive for a meal means that the casual diner might give it a miss and head to the basement. Highly recommended for a special evening.

One of my favourite places to eat in Dublin. The food is great value and the staff very friendly. Always a pleasure to eat there even when on my own. Highly recommended!

Very good value early bird. Lovely staff. Only complaint was that the music could be a little bit loud at times. Not loud enough to detract from the food. Would happily go again.

Monsoon (Rathmines)
306-308 Lower Rathmines Road, Rathmines, Dublin

Never fails to deliver a superb meal! I have never come away less than satisfied. The staff are friendly, the portions just right and the atmosphere is calm. Fantastic. One complaint: the rather odd muzak. Thankfully it's usually so quiet that I don't really notice after a while. Their takeaway/delivery service is much faster (and of a much higher standard) than the other Indian just around the corner! Very, very highly recommended.
