This was our third time to return to Bistro Martello with a voucher. The service was great and the food was amazing. The restaurant was half empty which I found a bit worrying for a Saturday night, I do hope they are doing okay and will be sure to return the next time without a voucher as the food is well worth the full price. The empty tables worked out well for us however, as we had our pick of where we'd like to sit. I had the kidneys to start, something I hadn't tried before and they were delicious. For my main I had the seafood skillet which comes out sizzling, it was absolutely beautiful. Best meal I've had in a long time. For dessert I had the chocolate brownie with ice cream - the brownie was served warm, which I loved, and didn't have big chunks of nut in it like they do in lots of other places so I was very pleased. We also treated ourselves to two glasses of prosecco for €12 and a bottle of wine. We lingered a good while after and were encouraged to take our time finishing our wine. Really felt very comfortable and relaxed, we were the second last table to leave and I don't think either table felt any push to get us out the door at the end of the night. Great restaurant, will definitely be returning to pay full price next time.

Boulevard Cafe
27 Exchequer Street, Dublin 2 , City Centre South, Dublin

We went here for lunch on Saturday and I have to say that the service was absolutely appalling! We arrived at about 12:50 and the place was pretty much empty, we were one of only two tables. We ordered by 1pm (chicken sandwich, burger and a coke), just main courses as we had somewhere to be at 2. The rest of the tables started filling up a bit then. At 1.30pm (that's right half an hour later) my burger arrived with cold chips. My coke never arrived, I had tried to get waiters attention several times in the half hour before but they were busy having full blown conversations with just one or two tables and wouldn't come near us. We waited another 5 mins for my boyfriends chicken sandwich (his chips were hot). When we asked for the bill, we took out the credit card straight away and the waiter came over with the machine, he handed it to me to put my pin in and then he just wandered off! He went to two other tables (chatting) back to the kitchen and then I tried to intercept him with the machine but he ran down the stairs quite quickly. I was late for my next appointment at this stage so I just finished off the transaction printing my own receipt and left. So over all, despite being one of the first into the empty restaurant, we were left waiting half an hour for our food (at lunch time), my chips were cold, our dishes were brought out five minutes apart, my coke never arrived and when I mentioned it to make sure it wasn't on the bill there was no word of an apology or even acknowledgement, then they walked off halfway though what should have been a very quick transaction paying the bill, leaving me to chase the waiter across the restaurant and then eventually just print receipts myself. It was the worst service I've ever experienced anywhere and I will never ever go back.

The Chop House Gastro Pub
2 Shelbourne Road, City Centre South, Dublin

Went here last night (Sunday) as a treat of not having to cook. We live nearby but had never been before so we strolled up to see if there were any tables available. They offered us one by the door which we declined so they set another table for us. I had scallops & black pudding to start - which was absolutely delicous, best I've had in a while. For my main I chose surf and turf which I also loved. It was cooked exactly how I had asked for it and the prawns were very tasty. Overall I really enjoyed the food and the service was good (although it's a bit awkward at the end when they're putting the amount in the credit card machine and they ask you if you want to tip and if so how much - I'd rather be left to do that myself). I'm not sure why it's called a gastropub, I would call it a restaurant. It's certainly not cheap and their pricing method is very odd. They have a two course and three course option for set prices but 90% of the menu and specials have a supplement on them so the two or three course prices are very unlikely to be what you're paying. I would rather they just be straight forward about it rather than trying to lure you in for a certain price and then sticking you with supplements. Great food, good service, just a bit pricey and a little deceptive about it.

Gallahers Bistro
16A D'Olier Street, Dublin 2, City Centre South, Dublin

We were in Gallahers on Friday night. I was really impressed with the layout, the decor and the atmosphere. We were asked would we like to sit near the door - we said no thank you so they seated us at a large but cosy booth by the kitchen. I wasn't overly impressed by the food. I love prawn cocktail but I was really disappointed in theirs, there was barely any sauce and it just tasted like salt and pepper. I got spaghetti & meatballs for a main which I didn't really love but to be fair I'd say that's down to my poor choosing. I will definitely be back and maybe try the seabass or something (which my boyfriend had, it looked and apparantly was delicous!) We were asked if everything was okay just a few too many times, it's like each and every waiter in the whole place came over to check on us and became a little annoying but I presume that's what they've been told to do so perhaps if they communicated a little better they would know that eachother had already checked on us but having said that, it's only a very small complaint. Really nice looking place, lovely waiters, but the food is a little hit and miss. I will certainly be back to choose my food a little more wisely.

Whitefriar Grill
16 Aungier Street, Dublin 2 , City Centre South, Dublin

We visited Whitefriar on a deal so it was great value for what we got. I had the surf and turf which was delicious and cooked perfectly as the waiter had recommended that I get medium rare rather than rare since it was rib eye. Very helpful staff and overall lovely restaurant. The only complaint I would have is that the tables are far too squashed together, it was a bit uncomfortable really feeling like you're encroaching on other peoples personal space. I also found it very hard to hear as it was so loud. I don't know if that's the set up of the restaurant or just the crowd that happened to be in it last Friday.

Ouzos Bar and Grill Blackrock
Main Street, South Co. Dublin , Blackrock, Dublin

My boyfriend and I went to Ouzos for a late lunch on Sunday and it was great. We were given an option of a seat near the door or high seat down the back so we chose the back. The service was friendly and efficient. He started with the potted crab and shrimp (I have had this on a previous occassion and loved it) while I had the caesar salad. For mains he had Fish'n'chips and I had the game pie. This was €17.95 each for the two courses which we felt was great value for the quality of food which was all thoroughly enjoyed. My game pie was especially delicous. We will be returning soon!

FXB Monkstown
3a The Crescent Monkstown, South Co. Dublin, Monkstown, Dublin

Popped in to FXB (The pub downstairs) for lunch on Saturday with my boyfriend. We didn't have too much time so we ordered main courses only. I ordered Sirloin steak medium/rare (I presumed I'd be safe to order it how I like it at FXB and that they'd cook it correctly). When the steak arrived, I cut into it and it was far more on the well done side, a lot of it was so overcooked that it was grey. I should have sent it back but I didn't want to have to wait for another steak while my boyfriend ate and then be sitting there eating while he finished and, like I said, we were on our way elsewhere so I didn't want to wait around the extra time, so I ate as much as I could and filled up on the chips. On the other hand, my boyfriends lamb shank was delicious and cooked perfectly. When the waitress arrived to take our plates away, she looked at my half eaten steak and asked if everything was okay. I hadn't planned on saying anything about it as I'd tried to eat it anyway, but she asked so I said I had to leave some as it was overcooked. She asked me why I didn't say anything and I said it's fine, not to worry about it, that I didn't want to wait the extra time for another steak. So she walked away tutting at me!! Then she came back with the bill and told me she would be charging me for the steak because I didn't say anything. I told her that was absolutely fine, I'm fully aware that when I eat something I need to pay for it! I wasn't looking for a free meal! I don't know if they get a lot of people in there trying to refuse to pay for food or something that would make her assume that's what I was after. All I did was answer a question she asked and she was so rude tutting at me and lecturing me. There is absolutely no way I would ever go back to this place.

Daniels
34a Glasthule Road, Sandycove, Dunlaoghaire, Sandycove, Dublin

I had been meaning to try this place for a while now as my parents go there sometimes and they recommended it. We walked in and there was only one other table in use (and when they left, one more). It felt quite empty but the little partitions made for nice cosy little spaces. The waitress was very nice, if a little over the top maybe (she was over complimentary on everything, gushed about how yummy and amazing everything on the menu was and said "great choice" after every single dish was ordered. Obviously she was very very nice but being that over the top just made everything she said seem so insincere). I had the mushroom soup to start which was delicious and I had the scampi for my main. The scampi had a very good light batter but I felt they weren't worth the price. The entire menu is very expensive, and there's no early bird or any other deals. You have to pay extra for things like chips which I find a bit silly. It's obvious that noone is going to order the meat or scampi or anything without a side order of some sort of potato so why not add it in and include in the price? The food is good but I've had just as nice or nicer for a fraction of the cost. Also, the chef comes around to each individual table to talk to you after. I'm sure some people love this, I'm just not one of those people!

Bistro Martello
1 Martello Terrace, South Co. Dublin, Sandycove, Dublin

Dined here on the menupages deal which was great value all inclusive, though we did opt for a wine other than the housewine so we paid the different (€4 or €5 I think). We arrived ten minutes late but our table was not yet ready so we stood around waiting for another 10/15 mins, it wouldn't normally bother me that this would happen as sometimes these things are out of the restaurants control but while we waited another group came in and their table was not yet ready either. They were seated at another table that belonged to a big party not due to arrive yet so they could have a drink and peruse the menu. We were left standing by the door (though they did offer us a drink - we didn't accept as there was a bottle of wine included with our meal). Anyway, none of that was a particularly big deal, but the fact that it was more than one table delayed would make me question how well managed it is. Also while we tried to hang around discreetly, the waiter pointed over at the table that was to be ours twice to update us on whether the people at it were drinking coffees/paying the bill which was obviously noticed by the people at the table which I would think could well have made them feel quite rushed and uncomfortable. Once we were in though, the food was absolutely gorgeous and the staff were very attentive. I would definitely return.

Ouzos Bar and Grill
22 Castle Street, South Co. Dublin, Dalkey, Dublin

Walked to Dalkey on Saturday night and had a wander down the main street to see if we could get a table somewhere. Ouzos looked busy but we chanced it anyway, were told we could have a table in a few mins and took our phone number while we went for a drink. Rang us a few mins later to say the table would be ready at half past. Found this extremely helpful as this way we didn't arrive down to early, or guzzle down our drinks worrying that we'd be late. Menu is mainly steak and seafood which suits me great. I had the scallops to start, they were quite tasty but very small, not quite what i was expecting. Fillet steak main course was cooked exactly as asked. Wait staff were friendly, if perhaps a little slow, but as I said they were busy. It was grand overall but I don't think I'd rush back to it. I'd prefer the Ouzo's in Blackrock.

Toscana (Dun Laoghaire)
5 Windsor Terrace, South Co. Dublin , Dun Laoghaire, Dublin

We visited Toscana last Friday having bought the menupages deal of 3 courses and a bottle of wine for €50 which was absolutely fantastic value as it was the full menu, not a restricted one. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The service was excellent, even though I forgot to bring the actual voucher print out along as I was supposed to, the waiters were really nice about it and helped us out anyway. I had garlic mushrooms to start while he had the antipasto. Both went down very well. For mains I had the penne marinara and he had the sea bass. Once again both were polished off (I almost never finish a full main course, which usually pleases himself as he gets to eat the rest, but he was out of luck on this occassion!) For dessert I got the profiteroles, which once again disappointed my boyfriend as I ate it all before even thinking to offer him a taste! The bottle of wine was lovely also, which so often isn't the case when part of a deal, but we were given a choice and happily went with their recommendation which was very nice. Basically, I can't fault the place, really loved it and will definitely be back!

Bar Italia
26 Blooms Lane , Lower Ormond Quay, City Centre North, Italian Quarter, Dublin

I visited Bar Italia with my boyfriend last week for a quick bite to eat as it was close to where we were meeting friends. I was seriously disappointed with the service, it was the worst I have experienced in a very long time. I didn't particularly like my food but my boyfriend enjoyed his and I'm willing to put mine down to it just being the wrong choice for me but the waiters were truly awful throughout. We were constantly ignored and left sitting there with dirty plates. After the main course we were left with out dirty plates for a good 15 minutes, while it was perfectly obvious we were finished and tried to get the waiters attention. After the dessert though we were waiting even longer, upwards of twenty minutes and they forgot my boyfriends coffee. We complained and they did apologise and offered a free drink but as we were already running extremely late we did not take them up on the offer. Definitely won't be returning.
