You know what, there is nothing wrong with average. Average means nothing offensive or wrong or burnt or trying too hard and not succeeding or not trying hard enough. Average means not thrilled but not disappointed. Average means when you read the ingredients on a tin of beans you will see "beans, tomato sauce, sugar". No surprises, no highs, no lows, just consistently reasonable, no fuss, reasonably priced food that fills yer tum until tea time. The only quibble I have really is that the staff can be a little slow taking orders sometimes, with the occasional orders not put through and the like. But otherwise they are friendly and service is very (if occasionally worryingly) quick. Try South. Look, you don't want fuss, you just want grub and service that has nothing wrong with it and there's nothing wrong with that.

While the staff are always friendly, the atmosphere does leave little to inspire confidence - the décor just feels cheap. Even a small investment in something like some homely Italian style table clothes would improve the atmosphere immensely. Think one step above a fast food restaurant and you won't be too far wrong. The food? Well the pizzas are lovely, though nearly always a bit overdone to the point of being slightly burnt. I also suspect that the ovens may need to be cleaned a little more as there is often a slight taste of "pizza second time around" from the pizzas. The chips are of the frozen variety and may be oven baked, really not wonderful. It's a pity, the restaurant is a short hop, skip and a jump from being really good, but at the end of the day, it's the pizza's that are important, and they are very nice and reasonably priced. If want a nice, quick place to pop into with your partner without getting all done up beforehand, this is yer man.

Taste (Wexford)
1 Selskar Avenue, Wexford, Wexford Town, Wexford

God has a great sense of irony. Call yer ship "The Unsinkable" and watch as he picks an ice cube from his G&T and casually drop it in the North Atlantic. Call your restaurant "Taste" and you better watch out! I have so wanted to like this restaurant for so long, and it's solely down to the staff, they are darn nice. But every thing else is so "ooh dear...." The ambience is nice at a cursory glance until you release that it is all MDF and foam, giving an impression of quality until you get closer. The food is somewhat similar. Except for the MDF. Or the foam. Look, it's not bad but it's not wonderful either. It has pretentions of being pretentious but just doesn't have the wit, experience or talent to pull it off. It is average in the widest possible sense of the word, meaning if you are not expecting much then you won't be disappointed. Gods sense of irony continues....

Centenary Stores
Charlotte Street, Wexford Town, Wexford

The food in The Stores constantly surprises me. Let's get one thing straight, it's pub grub, nothing more, but the range is wide, the services prompt and it's never half bad. Just one thing, when oh when are pubs gonna get over the fact that large plates filled to the brim with carbs and cheaper ingredients does not represent a good meal, unless we can see your builders crack and you read The Sun. I wouldn't mind but the owners other eatery in town, The Riverbank, does the exact same thing. Less concentration on portion size and more on taste and The Stores would be bang on.

La Dolce Vita (Wexford)
6-7 Trimmers Lane, Wexford, Wexford Town, Wexford

Here is my one and only quibble, this restaurant could do with a bit more variety in their menu of the day. But that's it! Apart from, from the friendly welcome to the smashing atmosphere to prompt the service and the truly tasty, truly authentic Italian food it is just a lovely, lovely experience. Just go there.

Westgate Design Restaurant
22a North Main Street, Wexford Town, Wexford

I will eat anything - put food in front of me and it is gone! There is one and only one notable exception to this. I fancied a warm chicken salad one day so I popped into Westgate Design. The menu board described the chicken as coming with crispy bacon and dressing. What I received was thick, greasy 'breakfast' bacon partially cooked and smothered in an obviously not restaurant made dressing that dominated everything, the salad, the chicken, even the taste. It was thoroughly thoroughly unpalatable, so much so that I got up, walked to the local supermarket, bought all the ingredients I needed and had a far, far nicer warm chicken salad at home. The staff are friendly and the ambiance nice but time after time I have been consistently disappointed with everything else. The breakfasts are lovely mind you, as are the salads in general, but don't bother going near the rest of the menu. I've tried and tried and it has never got any better, don't say you ain't been warned!

Cappuccinos Restaurant
25 North Main Street, Wexford Town, Wexford

I would love to recommend Cappuccinos. The atmosphere is nice, the food is reasonable enough, if a little pricey, and the staff are lovely. But can you please tell me how so many staff (and there does seem to be a lot) manage to look so busy and yet be so consistently slow? They also have a very consistent habit of forgetting to bring you parts of your order. I placed an order recently with one such waiter, asking for two items to be left off the plate. I received the two items I didn't want and nothing else! There has been, for quite some time now, serious management issues regarding the staff, if they could be resolved it would be a smashing little place to eat.

Vine Restaurant
109 North Main Street, Wexford Town, Wexford

First impressions of this restaurant are not good. A grotty wide door fronting onto Wexfords Main Street does little to inspire confidence. Once inside though you are greeted by a lovely wide dual staircase, with some gorgeous, thoughtfully done hand-painted stencils dotted around the place, giving it almost the air of some hippy socialist vegetarian co-op café who struck it incredibly lucky with their premises. Once you open the main doors of the upstairs restaurant you are greeted by an gorgeous, incredibly high ceilinged box, painted in rich earth like tones, with lighting that is intimate to exactly the right degree. You will love sitting in this room, it never feels crowded or sounds noisy, even on weekend nights. Do avoid the upstairs mezzanine during the Summer months however as it can get quite stuffy. For the rest of the year though I would recommend going up there, it feels quite intimate, is ideal for a large group, and commends an excellent views of the entire restaurant. The staff are very friendly, though they can tend towards a little over-familiarity if you are a regular. The service is quick, even on the busier nights and the food is consistent and always wonderfully tasty. The range of wines and beers is perfectly adequate, although if any of your friends do not like even mildly spicy food they may struggle to find anything on the menu that will suit their uncultured pallet. One thing, do not bring children here - the restaurant just does not cater for kids in any way shape or form. This is not a bad thing - just like Häagen-Dazs, The Vine is a purely grown up pleasure, and in the haut cuisine wasteland that is Wexford Town, it is also a lovely and very welcome oasis. Thoroughly recommended.

Robertino's Restaurant
19 Main Street South, Wexford, Wexford Town, Wexford

Picture the scene; your new boyfriend is bringing you "somewhere special" for dinner. As you walk towards the restaurant he has previously booked you suddenly realise that the relationship may not be as long as you had hoped it would be, Robertino's is one of those restaurants. Let's start with the pluses. The restaurant itself is quite nice, and although a little narrow, meaning that it's hard to have intimate conversation, it is clean and pleasant. The pizzas aren't bad and the prices are not unreasonable either. Now, on the other hand the service is poor; slow and on occasions palpably unfriendly. Like I said the pizzas are reasonable, but don't dare stray away from them and tip-toe through the rest of the menu, you will regret it. For starters, they do have a tendency to use cheaper ingredients (such as pre-grated Parmesan, ughhh!) Case in point, a while back I had a pasta dish that supposedly contained salmon, only it wasn't salmon, it was smoked coley. I pointed this out to the waitress who went to check with the chef, and came back and assured me that it was, in fact, salmon in the dish. I doubted myself sufficiently enough to say no more. What I wish I had known at the time was at the other end of the table, my friend also asked the same waitress if it was coley in the salmon dish. The self same waitress said she'd go down to the chef to check, which she did, came back a couple of minutes later, and you'll never guess what she said... The food can be bland, overtly oily, definitely overtly garlic-y and very far from a pleasant Italian eating experience it should be. Now, the place is child friendly, with a reasonable kids menu, and if your only out for pizza and a bit of a laugh, and not haut cuisine and class, then it's ok. For God sake tho, don't bring the new girl there, she will not be impressed...
