Submitted a review of this restaurant a few months ago but felt compelled to put pen to paper again based on a recent visit. An even better experience than my previous visit foodwise and servicewise for eight of us on a terrible wet and windy night. Beautifully cooked steaks, duck, lamb and fish served with appropriate veg. Extremely helpful staff. Will be visiting Dublin again next week and will definitely be paying here another visit.

Packies
Henry Street, Kenmare, Kerry

Started with asparagus and a duck leg confit. The former was good but the later was dry and was more like a roast then confit. Very nice panfried john dory for mains. Decent wine list with some reasonably priced bottles. Service was professional and attentive. The head chef certainly made an effort to get involved in the front of house which was nice to see.

Mulcahy's Restaurant
36 Henry Street, Kenmare, Kenmare, Kerry

Very good food with excellent presentation. Starters of duck confit and crab salad followed by mains of black sole and beef wellington. Accompanying veg and sauces worked very well. Only dissapointing element was a strawberry roulade/ice cream dessert which was fine but not up to the standard of what went before it. Drank some excellent Spanish Albarino and Rioja. Can't really comment on atmosphere too much as the table we were sat at was hidden behind a wine rack and near the toliet entrances! Service was pleasant and attentive. Only other quibble and it is a small one is that it is a little pricey.

Bay Restaurant
369 Clontarf Road, Dublin 3, Clontarf, Dublin

Small room and a little cramped. Had decent burgers served with good salad and fries. Decent enough wine list. Service was fine. Menu presentation is a little complicated - healthy options, etc.Overall, a decent neighbourhood place serving decent food.

Il Corvo Restaurant
98-100 Upper Drumcondra Road, Dublin 9 , Drumcondra, Dublin

Third viisit here but first on a Sunday. Calamari as a starter was disappointing from the small portion size to lack of flavour. Of the main courses ordered pizza was the winner. A main of veal was ok and apork dish which comprised of an escalope of pork, a baked potato and nothing else was average. Service was attentive.

Casino House
Coolmain Kilbrittain Co. Cork, Kilbrittian, Cork

Visited for Sunday lunch. Very nice room and a warm welcome. Menu was short. Soup, Game Terrine, Goats Cheese for starters. Lamb and Risotto for mains. All presented nicely and good flavours. Wine lis is good but a little pricey.

Wongs of Ranelagh
7 Sandyford Road, Ranelagh, Ranelagh, Dublin

First visit to Wongs. Had a set menu for four which was ok. Biggest winner was whole salted seabass but overall the meal was relatively dissapointing especially the quality of chicken used and a bizarre steak/onion combo which was more european than chinese. Quality seemed to be sacrificed for quantity. Staff were very nice and attentive.

Liberty Grill
32 Washington Street, Cork City, Cork

Visited for lunch. Three of us had the "burger of the day special" and all agreed that is was good quality. Excellent chilli sauce, side salad and fries. Nice lively atmosphere and good staff.

The Copper Kettle (Laois)
The Square, Durrow, Laois

A basic no frills cafe style place which serves good quality comfort food. Had very good steak sandwiches with some of the best fries you will get anywhere between Dublin and Cork. Prices are very reasonable and staff friendly.

Foley's Seafood and Steak Restaurant
23 High Street, Killarney, Killarney, Kerry

Visited for dinner. Nice room and good professional staff. Highlight of our starters were good quality oysters. Fish main courses were good but slightly overcooked which impaired the flavour a little. Rack of lamb was good and very well presented. The more affordable end of the wine list offered decent bottles but could do with a bit more imagination given the array of fish available. Overall a pleasant experience if a little on the expensive side.

La Lavanda
Main Street, East Village, Douglas, Cork

Relatively dissapointing dinner visit for 8 of us. Menu tries to cover too many styles of cooking. We had a very average meal including overcooked pork fillet and some dissapointing rib eyes. The star of the meal was a very well cooked pizza. Wine list is dissapointing even if reasonably priced although we returned our first choice as the wine had become "fortified". Staff tried but could have been a little more attentive as the place was relatively quiet.

House Restaurant
Cliff House Hotel, Middle Road, Ardmore, Ardmore, Waterford

Visited for Suday lunch. As regards decor and atmosphere the interior of the building is a bit of a let down given the amazing surroundings and the good use of the available outside space. Foodwise we were happy with the quality and presentation of our starters of goats cheese salad and smoked salmon and our mains of lamb shank and beef. Wine list was on the pricey side for what was on offer. Staff were attentive and friendly.

Langton House Hotel Kilkenny
69 John Street, Kilkenny City, Kilkenny City, Kilkenny

Visited with a family group for lunch. Food was dissapointing. A chicken kiev consisted of a breaded chicken breast with a lump of unmelted garlic butter sitting on top, beef was overcooked and dry, salmon also overcooked, veg eventually was served to some guests when they had nearly finished their main course. Kids portions were too large and large amounts were left over. Service was disjointed and there seemed to be more urgency in settignt the room up for dinners than dealing with the late lunch guests.

Pier Head
The Quays, Kinvara, Galway

Have dined here in the past on a number of occasions and went again recently for diner. Great setting even if the space could be utilised a bit better to take advantage of then surroundings. Very busy spot which meant that it was very cramped from a diners perpective. There seems to be an asian slant with the inclusion of lime, coconut and chillis in a lot of dishes/sauces which meant the accompanying veg were not a great match . Steaks, sea bass, salmon and pork dishes were ok if not spectacular. Desserts including a decent pavlova were ok. Service was rushed due to numbers. A bit on the pricey side for the quality of the food, service, etc.

The Garryvoe Hotel
Ballycotton Bay, Castlemartyr, Cork

Six of us dined in the bar early evening. There was a varied menu available but as we we so near the sea we all decided to have fish and chips. Good quality plaice accompanied by decent fires and side salad. The only dissapointing element was the tartare sauce which was lacking a little on capers. Dishes going to other tables looked good and seemed to be enjoyed by the other diners.

Fota Restaurant @ Fota Island Resort
Fota Island Resort, Fota Island, Cobh, Cork

Four of us visited for dinner. Starters consisted of scallops with pork belly, roasted tomates and wild mushroom risotto. These were followed by mains of game (venison/partridge/wood pigeon), halibut and john dory. All of the dishes were of a very high standard and we thoruoghly enjoyed our meal. We were not able to manage dessert but there were some nice sounding dishes on the menu.Little additional touches such as an excellent amuse bouche and flavoured butters with our bread selection were well thought out. Service was professional and of a good standard. If you work your way through the wine list there are some bottles at reasonable prices - by restaurant standards at any rate!! Our only gripes were that it was a little bit pricey so we would view it as special ocassion venue, and that it needs to be pretty full to acheive a good atmosphere.

Les Gourmandises
17 Cook Street, Cork City, Cork

Had a most enjoyable dinner here as a party of three. Starters consisted of the Tasting Plate and Duck Confit Terrine followed by mains of Sea Bass with Choucroute and Pork, and Roast Cod with Foie Gras and Red Onion Confit. Desserts of Chocolate Mousse with Orange Jelly and Poached Pears completed an excellently executed and presented meal consisting of good quality ingredients. It was a shame that there was a lack of diners when we visited as the quality and presentation of the food and good service deserves more. Unfortunately it is a bit on the pricey side (then again most eating establishments in the country are as well!) so this might make it more of a special occasion place rather than somewhere that one would visit regularly.

The Boardwalk Bar and Grill
Lapps Quay, Cork City, Cork

The menu just seems to be copying a tired format that has been available in numerous other establishments for some time . It lacks very much in imagination even for a steakhouse! The addition of the word "fresh" to various menu items such as soup or salmon is just a bit too much, as one would expect these to be fresh in any case. It also would surprise me to find that all the menu items are created in house. The wine list is medicore at best whilst being overpriced even by restaurant standards - I could only find one worthwhile trying. It will probably appeal to some but it's not the place for people who are serious about their food or wine. Plenty of scope for improvement.

Pastis French Bistro
Glencairn Inn, Lismore, Waterford

Nice place and good waiting staff were both left down by the quality of the food on our visit for dinner. Starters of seafood chowder, which had practically no fish and fried squid which was overcooked to the point where it was tough and very chewy were disappointing. For mains steaks were served at what best could be described as lukewarm on cold plates. Fish was overcooked and therefore tough. One plus was a lamb shank which was cooked well and flavoursome. The cheese plate was good and varied. It's a shame that the food which is vital to success was so disappointing as the setting and staff deserve better. Hopefully we hit it on an off night for the kitchen but it would need to improve significantly to warrant a return visit.

Augustines
Closed, Cork City, Cork

First visit to this restaurant after hearing lots about it. The service from the outset was very good and had some nice touches like an amuse bouche of gazpacho. For starters had carpaccio of beef and black pudding. The beef was accompanied by decent rocket leaves, good parmesan and tasty dressing which had a hint of truffle oil. The pudding while tasty was a little small portionwise. Lamb and ribeye steak followed for mains. Both were flavoursome and were accompanied by decent veg - provencale style for the lamb and a nice take on the "chip" for the steak. Decent wine list with some good value bottles.

Sage Restaurant
The Courtyard, 8 Main Street, Midleton, Cork

If I were writing a review on the lunch menu alone I would easily give it four stars as it is varied, good value and decent ingredients are used. Decent lamb curry, good hake served with mash, interesting sandwiches(eg steak and blue cheese) and salads, as well as daily specials. Recently had very good roast tenderloin of pork with mash and grain mustard sauce for €12.50 which was a pleasant surprise. Dinner however was a disappointing experience. Starters consisted of crab cakes with a poor accompanying salad, a caesar salad which was lacking in dressing and decent calamari. Mains of sirloin steaks (€23+ for an 8oz)and pork tenderloin were disappointing as the meat had been overcooked and was dry - none had been ordered well done! Desserts were good - anything with chocolate is worth a try. The wine list is short with few decent bottles but is a little pricey for what is on offer. It is a shame that dinner did not live up to expectation but I will give it another try at a later date.

Farmgate Restaurant and Country Store
Coolbawn, Midleton, Cork

Had an excellent dinner here. Quality and presentation of food was top notch. Starters of soup, seafood chowder and prawn tempura followed by rib eye steak, cod and plaice which were all despacthed with relish. Wine list is good leaning towards Spain quite a bit. Prices were a little on the high side but given the quality compared to other eating establishmnets alowances should be made. The waiting staff were good but can try a lillte too hard. Bizzarely we were told that we could not add a tip to our credit card - just hope customers bring cash to allow for this! All in all a very enjoyable experience.

The Elm Tree Bar & Restaurant
Glounthaune, Cork City, Cork

After reading the glowing reviews posted since my last visit I went back to check things out given the unfortunate experience I had previously. The restaurant makeover is very good and the waiting staff have certainly improved. Unfortunately the food was a problem as after an hour's wait we were served undercooked chicken which was inedible. It looks as as if the kitchen struggled to keep up with the number of diners and quality suffered as a consequence. The dishes were still left on our bill when it was presented but after pointing this out to one of the managers they were removed. Maybe Sunday is not the day to visit!!! If the correct balance is struck between numbers and quality/service then perhaps things might go a little smoother.

Thai Thanie
17 Main St, Midleton, Cork, Midleton, Cork

Very well decorated in an "over the top" Asian sort of way which gives the place a great atmosphere. Unfortunately the quality of the food suffers when things get hectic. On my most recent visit I was disappointed with a Hot and Sour Soup which lacked flavour (and took an age to arrive at the table) and found two curry sauces to be watery on mains. Still it is a good venue and not overpriced.

Farm Restaurant (Dawson Street)
3 Dawson Street, Dublin 2, Dawson Street, Dublin

Busy when visited for Saturday lunch. Simple menu but well executed with decent quality ingredients. Burgers are well made and tasty. Only item that disappointed was a pizza which had a too much cheese. Service was ok if not inspiring. Worth a visit if you want simple good food.

The Club Brasserie
Lapps Quay, Cork City, Cork

A really nice stylish room but the food let it down badly. Went as a party of four and all agreed that the quality of the food was a let down. For mains we had steaks, scampi and lamb but felt that the quality of the food should have been better for the prces being charged. I will give it anohter shot as we may have just hit it on an off night for the kitchen.

Fire & Ice Cafe
The Courtyard, 8 Main Street, Midleton, Midleton, Cork

I regularly eat lunch here and in general find the food be varied and of good quality and presentation. On my last visit two of us ate confit of duck which was excellent whilst the other member of our party had a caesar sald which again was good. The biggest problem I find is the length of time it takes for food to come out of the kitchen and on some occasions a party of diners may not receive their food at the same time.

Star Anise
4 Bridge Street, Cork City, Cork

I regularly visit this restaurant as the food and services are consistently good. The only down side to the place is the dining room itself. I find the menu varied and interesting and the addition of daily specials is a great idea. On a recent visit we enjoyed excellent tempura prawns, scallops and duck shepherds pie. The duck dish was definitely the star of the evening. The wine list is good and contains some very good/interesting bottles such as the David O'Brien produced red from Provence.
