This is a great place to go either in the middle of the day or in the evening. It has brought Maynooth from Dumpsville to Pzazzville by its simple, bohemian presence. The food is tasty, the service super and polite, and the general ambience delightful. I love it. Also, I like their little incentive cards - you get a free coffee or a free course after you build up enough 'credits' or stamps. Nice place. Long may it last.

This place is not for anyone who wants genuine Chinese cuisine. In fact, it's a noisy, hysterical evening-joint, filled with noisy individuals. The food has that familiar MSG tang which guarantees a headache and dehydration the next morning. Avoid, avoid, avoid!

Barberstown Castle
Straffan, Straffan, Kildare

This venue is atmosphere-high - very pleasant, comfortable in an ornate neo-Victorian way. Its atmosphere is one of the plusses, in fact. On a culinary level I think some courses are over-sauced, over-flavoured, with too many contrasting, clashing styles at work. Desserts have deteriorated over the years. On a value level? Not sure it's all it's cracked up to be. I tend to feel we pay for atmosphere but at the expense of doing justice to the undoubtedly fine ingredients of cooking. Less of the ladies-who-lunch appeal in the middle of the day, and more emphasis on a less frilly style of presentation may be what's called for in these Tiger-Dead times!

Andy's Restaurant & Bar
Market Street, Monaghan Town, Monaghan

Service on the evening we were there was unbelievably slow. That, compounded by the unapologetic attitude of the man serving us, was pretty infuriating for a hungry group of six. Everything else is fine - quite a nice atmosphere, very cosy, hearty food that someone takes a bit of care with, but PLEEEEZE polish up the serving staff.
