Now here's a GEM hidden away in Laragh, right beside beautiful Glendalough, just a short spin from the N11 at Ashford. Family run by a local husband and wife team (one half of which is always visible on the floor), this place always seems busy with a veritable melting pot of locals and not-so-sightseeing-locals from the US, Canada, South America and beyond. But I digress...the food? In a word. FAB. Well-priced with large portion sizes. Treat yourself!

Exuding an attractive exterior what promises to be a memorable dining experience soon descends into a pretentious menu coupled with poor service. There's no choice but to order 'Organic' this and 'natural' that, and when the food FINALLY arrives (after some delay), it was sub par and tasteless. One of my party was ill and couldn't eat any of their breakfast and not once did any member of the seemingly 'distracted' staff ask if there was anything wrong. The freshly squeezed orange juice would probably have tasted great were it not for the fact that even on request, no ice was available, leaving the juice unpalatably warm. Next time I'm in Galway, I'll go to Monroes for a normal no-nonsense and hearty breakfast instead.

Zest Cafe
Unit 6/7, Clane Shopping Centre, Clane, Kildare

For a small town Clane boasts a beauty when it comes to Zest. Extremely welcoming staff and a bright comfortable setting. There's visibility to the kitchen (always reassuring when you can see the chef in action!). I shared a pizza and pasta with my other half and we also had a bowl of beautifully cooked crispy french fries. Nicely priced and extremely tasty!

The Port House Ibericos
5/6 Pembroke Cottage, Pembroke District, Dundrum Town Centre, Dublin 14, Dundrum, Dublin

Que bien sitio! A beautiful atmosphere (particularly in the sun-drenched terrace!). Gorgeous food, well-prepared (paella and patatas bravas are particularly tasty!)) and reasonably priced. Service a little slow but nothing to slate the place about. Highly Recommended!

The Counter Dundrum
Pembroke District, (adjacent to the Mill Pond at Town Square), Dundrum, Dublin

A nice restaurant although the semi-Nando's style 'order yourself' process is slightly frustrating (I prefer to tell a smiling waiter/waitress what I would like, rather than 'tick' off menu items from a sheet). Food is extremely tasty and service is reasonably quick. I'd definitely return!

Mao Restaurant (Dundrum)
Dundrum Town Centre, Dublin 14, Dundrum, Dublin

Nice location. Average food. Slow service. Overpriced. On the plus side, they get their coffee from Starbucks! Service is included in the bill but I didn't realise this until after I'd paid and left an unnecessary tip. Overall, Wagamama's a far tastier and better value option and just a stone's throw away!

The Hen House
The Pavilions, South Dublin, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin

By far and away from favourite restaurant in Dun Laoghaire. Attentive, friendly staff, tasty food (Eggs benedict as well as the ciabatta and soup combo are to die for!). Brought my other half here for Valentine's night and we were treated to complimentary Prosecco with strawberries as well as free desserts thanks to the very kind member of the management team who was working that night. Oh and lest I forget, the steak. Unbelievably good!
