The last night I was here was the day after my wedding last August. I had a wonderful evening. The food in the China Garden is always exceptional. I've never had a bad meal in it yet - and I have been here a fair few times. I had a lovely starter of chicken and sweetcorn soup followed by Fillet Steak Chinese Style (came out on a sizzling hot plate). It was delicious. The China Garden is always busy but the waiting staff are always friendly and attentive. This place has a reputation as one of the best Chinese restaurants in Ireland. People travel from all neighbouring counties to get there. That's enough of a recommendation I feel. The only gripe I have is that it can be fairly pricey - but you are guaranteed a lovely meal so that's fair enough

Ananda
Dundrum Town Centre, Dublin 14, Dundrum, Dublin

We went for the value menu which worked out at €20 for starter and main. I thought the portions were miserly. I had the cardamon and mace spiced chicken for starter. Tasty but miniscule portion. I had the morsels of chicken in korma sauce for mains. That too was tiny. The rice and naan bread that came with it were tasty but portion-wise, very small. So too was the chicken korma itself. We were offered dessert menus, but at between €7.50 and €9 per dessert, we declined. It was a bit much. Overall I shant be returning for early bird. But I might go back for a regular meal if I win the lotto. The food is very nice, but I know of excellent Indian restaurants in other parts of Dublin that are half the price

The Olde Post Inn
Cloverhill, Cavan Town, Cavan

Went here on a Saturday night. Beautiful country setting beside a church and graveyard. The restaurant was beautiful. The whole building had the feel of a country house. Food orders were taken in the living room. You were escorted to the restaurant as the food was ready. The atmosphere was lovely. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The meal was gorgeous. At €56 a head for 5 courses, it was a bit steep, but when you taste the food, you realise that it is out of this world. I had a chicken and lobster caesar salad for starts, followed by vegetable soup and then rib eye Angus steak with bearnaise sauce. I had ice cream and sorbet medley for dessert. Helpings were substantial. The nicest thing I ate was the chicken and lobster caesar salad. Delicious. My wife had goats cheese, soup and a chicken dish for her main course. She had an apple pie for dessert, which she said was the highlight of the meal. All in all a lovely experience from start to finish, and one we are keen to repeat again. Lovely for a special occasion. We'll be back

The Abbey Tavern, Howth,
Abbey Street, Howth, Dublin

A nice homely place. We brought our father here last Sunday for Father's Day. We went for the pub grub and not the restaurant. There was a blazing fire in the corner, which was ridiculous for June. We were roasting. The waiter service was a tad slow, but when the waitress arrived she was friendly. Myself and my wife had lasagne and chips, which was very plentiful and tasty. The portion of chips was a bit miserly. My father had a cabbage and bacon. He cleared the plate. We did not have dessert or starter. There is a nice atmosphere in the old Abbey, and the price was pretty reasonable. We will definitely be back.

Joels Restaurant
Newlands Cross, Naas Road, West Dublin, Clondalkin, Dublin

I had high expectations of Joels as my brother loves the place, and is a regular visitor. I was most impressed. We went last night. The restaurant itself is absolutely huge. I had a regular portion of nachos for starter. Heaven. They had cheese and chilli beef on them, as well as kidney beans and sweetcorn. They were delicious. My main course was medallions of beef. It was two portions of something akin to fillet mignon with two sauces - peppercorn and mushroom. My wife had chicken kiev. It was two huge chicken breasts in breadcrumbs, swimming in garlic butter. I had a taste and they were lovely. We both had a chocolate and marshmallow ice cream sundae for dessert. Delicious. The waiting staff were attentive and efficient. A minor gripe was that I ordered a glass of club orange but got a pint of rock shandy by accident. However I was charged for the former, so no harm ! The food was a bit on the pricey side. Might have to go early bird next time. I will be back to Joels I reckon. The food was excellent and we loved the atmosphere and the service

Pattaya Thai
Johnstown Road, Cabinteely, Cabinteely, Dublin

My advice is to go for the lunch menu. Make sure you book it though ! On a Thursday and Friday only, they do a lunch special. There are all you can eat starters. You can help yourself to as much as you wish. The food is top notch. It includes chicken skewers, spring roll, prawn toast, calimari and spare ribs. There are numerous sauces as well. The satay on the chicken skewers is a great combination and is to die for. There is a set list of mains. My personal favourite is the chicken green pepper with black bean sauce. Singapore noodles and shredded duck are popular as well. The meal rounds off with a choice of tea or coffee. This all costs the unbelievable price of €9.95. I try and limit my visits to once a month, as the weight would seriously pile on if you were to go any more frequently. Highly recommended, but remember to book it !

Oriental Palace Chinese Restaurant & Take Away
Unit 1, 1/F Kennedy Road, Kennedy Centre, Navan, Meath

We went here without a booking on Mother's Day evening. We had no idea that it would be packed with people, but it was. We were given a makeshift table in the middle of the restaurant, which was very spacious and fine by us. The waiting staff were under pressure, yet we had our orders taken promptly by their very attentive and friendly staff. All I can say is that the food was outstanding. I had a starter of chicken strips in garlic butter, which tasted absolutely divine. My main course was chicken taiwan. The portions were enormous. It consisted of a type of popcorn chicken in a nutty sauce with chopped onions. Very savoury and tasty. My wife had a main course of chicken red curry, and loved it too. We both went for three scoops of ice cream for dessert, and the portions were very generous. Including a soft drink and a glass of wine, the final bill came to only €55. Given the quantity and the quality of the food that we had received, and the level of service, we were staggered by such a reasonable price. This place is now our favourite eatery in Navan and we will be back many more times

Horse & Hound (Dublin)
The Horse & Hound, Cabinteely, Cabinteely, Dublin

This place does exceptional pub grub. The menu is extensive, is good value and the chef even comes out to greet you the odd time, to make sure that you think his food is up to scratch ! If you like general stuff like burgers, paninis and chicken and beef dishes, beautifully presented, and made with TLC, you'll love it here.

Fahrenheit Grill
Clontarf Castle Hotel, Castle Avenue, North Dublin, Clontarf, Dublin

We got a dinner special as part of a hotel booking at Clontarf Castle. The deal was excellent. The service in the restaurant was good, if a bit rushed. There was only one man ushering people to their tables and dealing with orders etc. Another gentleman joined him about ten minutes after we arrived. Both men were very friendly, and we didn't have to wait for too long. The food was decent. Both me and my wife had a chicken caesar salad for starters and we both thought is was exceptional. My wife had a creamy chicken dish for mains. I had a steak. My steak was disappointing - a miserly portion and lots of fat on it. The potato and veg were outstanding. Potatoes came with garlic butter and were served in a small saucepan. The same with the veg. I had ordered chips but they never arrived. However, there was more than enough of the delicious potato to go around. The dessert was gorgeous. Generous scoops of ice cream over a biscuit with butterscotch sauce. Very nice indeed. We had a bottle of wine thrown in as well, which we really enjoyed. We'll be back again, although I won't be having the steak next time !

Bay Restaurant
369 Clontarf Road, Dublin 3, Clontarf, Dublin

We love it here for the atmosphere as much as the food. I had the homemade burger the last time and my wife had the Thai chicken. We both cleared our plates. I've been here a few times now and have always found it intimate and relaxing. I've seen a few Irish celebs at times as well. It's a lovely place to relax after a walk along the strand or a stroll through St Anne's Park. The staff have been very nice any time I have been here as well. Plenty to recommend it.

Dandelion
St. Stephen's Green, St Stephens Green, Dublin

A great place for young people as there is a trendy disco bar and the restaurant side of the place is "cool" as well. I found the staff to be very friendly and attentive. The food itself was pretty bog standard though it was relatively inexpensive considering it is on Stephens Green. I had a mushroom soup for starter and a burger and chips for a main course. They tasted alright but nothing too special. My wife had a caesar salad and a chicken dish for main and she enjoyed both of them. The majority of the people I was with enjoyed their food. The women seemed to enjoy the place more than the men as it was trendy

The Snail Box
Kilmoon, Ashbourne, Meath

The food here is nice and the staff are friendly, but the price of the food is outrageous. I only visit here on rare occasions because of this. I had a lovely chicken stir fry with white wine sauce and my wife went for the thai chicken. Neither of us had any complaints about the food. However, it is outrageous to be paying circa €18 each for what is a pub menu. It is not a Michelin starred restaurant

The Russell Restaurant
15 Ludlow Street Navan, Navan, Meath

This place is always packed. It can be very hard to get a table if you haven't booked.I finally got there last night. I dont understand what all the fuss is about. The decor and the atmosphere of the place is lovely. However the food doesn't live up to the hype whatsoever. We went for an early bird last night. The food was only average. I had potato skins for starter and they were bland. I had the Russell burger for mains and it too was only alright. My wife had potato and leek soup and found it tasty. She then had sirloin steak which she described as tough. The greatest crime as I see it were the microscopic portions of veg, chips and garlic potatoes. There were four of us and there was one small bowl of chips to share around and two tiny portions of turnip and broccoli. We asked for more garlic potatoes and another miniscule bowl was given to us. I know this is early bird but for god's sake, give us a break ! The desserts were really nice. It was €30 per head for starter, dinner and dessert. That is pretty reasonable, provided you are not still hungry after you are finished, which we almost were !

The Ivy @ Dunboyne Castle
Dunboyne Castle Hotel and Spa, Dunboyne, Dunboyne, Meath

We got a good deal of dinner and B&B accommodation for €155 at Dunboyne Castle. It's called the Winter Warmer special. In the restaurant we were handed separate laminate menus. The choice was limited but we both spotted food we liked so were happy. We both had bacon caesar salad, a chicken dish with butternut squash and side of parsnips, carrots and potatoes. Dessert we had was three scoops of dessert in a tuile basket. All of the food was delicious. We had absolutely no complaints. The service was flawless as well. The manageress was nice, as were the servers. The atmosphere in this restaurant is lovely as well. We have dined here four times now and we will definitely be back again

The Silver Tankard
Tankardstown, Navan, Navan, Meath

I took my wife and my parents for a meal here yesterday afternoon at 4pm. The place was empty. The staff were very friendly. We were offered early bird even though it is not usually available on a Sunday. We paid €24.95 each for a four course meal. Including drinks the total bill came to €`112. I cannot fault the food or the service whatsoever. Both were superb. We all had different starters and they were all out of this world, especially my chicken wings. Huge portions. Main courses were also excellent. My dad and I had two juicy steaks. My mother had a chicken breast meal, which she said was lovely. Mushroom sauce was outstanding on our three dishes. My wife had a thai green curry, which she thought was disappointing. She usually has this meal in authentic Thai restaurants so it is a hard one for a general eatery to pull off. Desserts were lovely. Overall, a pleasant experiece, and not as pricey as it could have been for what we got. One observation I will make is that I can't see this restaurant arrangement lasting. The problem is that they do "pub grub" in the lounge next door for slightly cheaper. People are getting confused I think. They are staying away from the restaurant as it looks too formal. I will be back. On my first visit here, I found it pricey, but it is good value if you go early bird, where portions are just as generous

Nandos (Dundrum)
Sandyford Road, Dundrum Town Centre, South Dublin, Dundrum, Dublin

Pricey for what you get and unnecessarily complex way of ordering. For a start, I think it is daft that you would be shown to a table then have to do everything yourself after that. They should have waiter service for the price of the food. I had a double chicken burger. It was tasty and spicy. With that I went for chips with medium peri-peri. Unfortunately, the peri-peri is like chicken salt or aromat. It is poured on the chips in too high a quantity. It just tastes like really salty chips. I think the next time I will get my peri-peri in liquid form out of the bottle. I also believe that the half chicken is much nicer than the chicken burger.

Copper & Spices Restaurant & Wine Bar
Ludlow Street, Navan, Meath

This is my third time rating Copper and Spices. I am afraid that they are frequently excellent but they are not always consistently good. The last time I went there with my wife, there was only one other table of people there. It was exceptionally quiet. When we got our hors d'oeuvre, the poppadoms and dips were outstanding and so flavoursome. However, my main course was very poor. I ordered the chicken balti. The consistency was all wrong. There was nothing liquid in it. It had the consistency of mashed potato. It tasted a bit different as well. The time before that when I had eaten here, the balti was a million times better. The serving of chips that I got this time was much smaller as well. I thought the desserts were too small. They need to focus on keeping the food consistently good. When they are good, they are excellent. However, I have had mixed experiences overall

Valley Cafe
43 Watergate Street Navan, Navan, Meath

This is the best chipper in Navan. I got burnt food from it once a few months ago. However I gave it another go and the food was back to excellent again. They have a very extensive menu. Their burgers are very tasty. I also like the quality of their curry chips. If you enjoy Mexican food, their Mexican burger is outstanding, as is their taco chips

Restaurant Ten Fourteen
324 Clontarf Road, Clontarf, Dublin

I was impressed with the friendly service, the quality of the food and the value. My only disappointment was with the steak that I had. It wasn't the leanest piece of sirloin I have ever tasted. However, the starter of bacon salad with mango was outstanding as was the sticky toffee pudding dessert. I'll definitely be back - however I'll have a different main course the next time

Gaylord Tandoori
26 Railway Street, Navan, Meath

This place just gets better and better. The menu is now easier to follow than before. You are given the sauce options and you can choose whether you want chicken, lamb or pork as your meat. I was here with my wife, brother and his girlfriend. We each ordered something different but everything was excellent. I tried a chicken balti for the first time and I thought it was divine. Everyone else was delighted with their starters and main courses. The naan bread is also to die for. I always go for the garlic and cheese naan. This is the nicest Indian restaurant that I have ever eaten in. More and more people are making the same discovery. The service is always excellent. The spacing of the tables is great as well. It never feels cramped. Finally to top it all it is terrific value. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Everytime I have visitors to Navan, I feel compelled to bring them here so they can experience how good it is for themselves

Wongs of Clontarf
436 Clontarf Road, Dublin 3, Clontarf, Dublin

I was there on Saturday at 7.30pm. I found the staff a bit snappy and cold. Although the dishes were presented beautifully, I didn't enjoy my starter or main. I had shredded chicken for starter and it was very salty. My main was Chicken Shanghai style and I didn't like the taste either. The dessert was only so-so as well. One or two of the staff were not very friendly. They shoved menus in our faces and seemed in a hurry to get us out. The overall price of the meal seemed steep too. It was a hundred euro for two four coursers with a half bottle of wine and a glass of Coke. It was about twenty euros overpriced in my opinion. I'll be back and will give it one other go. I may have been just unlucky with my choices of food. My wife thought hers were only so-so as well.

Giovanni's (Navan)

The chips in here are to die for. They are real chipper chips - soft, greasy, mushy and they soak up all the salt and vinegar. Delicious...

Thai Orchid (Navan)
Above The Diamond Cinema, Metges Lane, Off Kennedy Road, Navan, Meath

I am delighted that the Thai Orchid has finally gotten up to speed with the post-Celtic Tiger world, and is offering real value now. Their early bird is available all day, and is terrific value. You can get two courses plus a glass of wine for €19.95. The food is delicious. I had a weeping tiger steak. It was melt in the mouth. My wife had thai green chicken curry, and it was equally delicious. For starter, I had hot and sour soup with chicken. Highly recommended. My wife had spring roll and she loved them as well. The service is excellent. They are far busier now than they were a year ago when we visited last. The food has always been of a high standard but was too pricey. I am delighted that they're rectified this now. They will reap the benefits. Good luck to them. We'll be back again.

The Loft
26 Trimgate Street, Navan, Meath

I have been going to the Loft on and off for a few years. There was a gap of about three years from my latest visit to the previous one. Unfortunately things hve gone downhill. I ordered potato skins with cheese and bacon. The potato skins were cremated. I then had the fajitas, which the Loft are famous for. I wasn't impressed with the sauce on the chicken. It was very gluey and not tasty. As I went on a Monday night, the place was very quiet and I get the feeling that the head chef might have been on a night off. I will give it one more chance but this was definitely an off night for me

Baan Thai (Leopardstown)
Central Park, Block P, Dublin 18, Leopardstown, Dublin

I was there for lunch today. Had chicken satay starter and beef with chillies and fried rice for main course. Both were delicious. My only problem with this place is that the service can be slow. Other than that everything else is fine

Aurora Asian Cuisine
Unit 5, Block C , Tyrrelstown Town Centre, Dublin 15, Tyrrelstown, Dublin

I have to say that this is the best Asian restaurant that I know. We went here on a busy bank holiday Sunday and we got a seat for two within a few minutes. The service was friendly and attentive. As for the food, it's excellent. The chicken teryaki Japanese style is beautiful. The skewered satay chicken starter has to be tried to be believed also. All in all, this place is excellent
