Bates Restaurant has a heritage that stretches back over a quarter of a century. The concept behind Bates is to offer truly world-class cuisine but with extraordinary value. To that end, the menus and fresh ingredients are noteworthy but also of importance is the atmosphere and character of this old hostelry: It looks formal but it is in fact very relaxed and comfortable.
Bates has been around for a very long time and the commitment of the management and staff and customers means that it will still be here in another 250 years.

AWARDS & PRIZES

We seek out the best establishments in every part of Ireland for inclusion in our guides and, because we work independently and without charging a fee, you know that we can be trusted to lead you to the best places over a wide range of categories. In 1900, André Michelin published the first edition of a guide to France to help drivers maintain their cars, find decent lodging, and eat well while touring. In 1926, the guide introduced the star to note good cooking; two and three stars were added in the early 1930s. The guide awards one to three stars to a small number of restaurants of outstanding quality. Every year, the Bridgestone editors set out to find those restaurants that offer the best cooking and the best service in Ireland. This book features grand city restaurants, and tiny little one-room restaurants in the wilds of the country. There are restaurants located on islands, and restaurants that reverberate with the energy and mania of the city. The Taste of Ireland Recommended award is bestowed on exceptional eateries by Paolo Tullio - Ireland's Leading food and wine writer. All the restaurants included have been independently reviewed.

I love this restaurant. The staff are great and the food is lovely. There was a mix up with my steak and how it was cooked and I had to send it back. I am not normally one to send food back but it was too rare for me. They were very apologetic and sorted it out and the steak was lovely. I was looking through the menu to see what I would have the next time I'm there.

We stopped here after I did the Lug challenge for Bray Cancer Center on Sunday, so I was starving. We sat outside as we had the dogs with us. The waitress noticed us immediately and brought us the menus. Sometimes when you sit outside restaurants you are ignored. We selected from the value menu which was very good value and got some nice bread and dips to keep us going while we waited for our food. They even brought water out for the dogs. All in All it was a great meal and really good service. We will definitely go back.

I haven't visited Bates in a long time and I really enjoyed it. The atmosphere was good and the menu was very extensive. You could choose form the Al a Carte, Specials menu or value menu. Food top class. One of our group didn't get her meal until after us as there was a problem with her potatoes they said and she got a top up of her wine glass. The only thing I would say is that at the prices we paid I think it should be standard that you get potatoes and vegetables as it said only one side order came with the main course. Vegetables are not that expensive. I will be back as I enjoyed it very much

Arrived on a cold day. Restaurant was not warm or cosy. The service was good and friendly. Starters good. Mains not that good. Wine sauce was thickened rather then reduced. Mushroom risotto looked very unattractive and was heavy though tasty. An ok meal, but would not rush back. Perhaps it's better at night.

My last visit of this place left me with bitter taste, ordered the same starter as last time and it was not cooked properly ,on the previous occasion I just loved that starter, now I couldn't eat it , it as uncooked...the main arrived in a short period of time and I was happy with the quality of the food, the veg came when we almost eat the main. they forgot about it....on a previous occasion we were served so slow we had been there for 3.5 hours for a 3 course meal, however on my last visit the food came pretty quick one course after another. there is a very noisy waiter overthere, you can hear him talking loud with other tables, you can hear what is their order,i would be interested in more privacy, however he is friendly. all the staff is friendly and helpfull. i'm having second taughts if I should go back or not....

Had not been here for a while and was wondering if it was still as good as on previous visits....It was! The atmosphere was buzzing with all tables occupied as we entered at 8pm, delicious smells were wafting towards us making us hungry - I chose the fish cake stater which was lovely - succulent fish in a light golden breadcrumb, followed by pan fried corn fed chicken with mushroom & Tarragon sauce - beautiful! Hubby had the seafood chowder to start which he proclaimed to be excellent, his main of seabass was perfectly cooked and accompanied by excellent vegetables and baby potatoes. As we were feeling fairly full we said we would share a dessert of panacotta with raspberries - divine and rather difficult to share - we should have got 2!!!!! Coffee was excellent. We were delighted to give this old favourite a try again it did not disappoint! Will be back

Again a wonderful experience at Bates, this time for Sunday lunch. All food cooked perfectly to order. Starters were, scrumptious, 3 of us got the fish cakes with delicious butter sauce, one member of our party got the soup which was lovely also. I had the pork belly, which was beautifully presented in circular parcels and all other members of our party had steak, which went down a treat also. I see there is an early bird dinner menu advertised 2 courses for E15.50 - ABSOLUTE BARGAIN!! Cant wait to book and venture to Rathdrum again!!

I went camping with some friends, and we had dinner at the Michelin recommended establishment. We made a good choice. They have both an early bird menu and a value menu, both of which are affordable and tasty. My starter (tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms) was fine, but a little bland. The main, however, (baked aubergine "Parmesana") was very well-cooked and very flavorful. Finally, the tiramisu was divine. I will certainly return to Bates if I ever find myself in Rathdrum again.

Two of us had dinner by reservation.at 20.30 hrs. This was my second visit to Bates. We both eat from the value menu and found the choice and quality really good - we were not surprised to note that all the tables were full. We will be back and will recommend Bates to our friends.

We eat here regularly' the food is great so are the staffand and its in a lovely location. The menu is changed regularly to suit the seasons but some favourites remain on the menu all the time, like the belly pork and seabass which are divine. Another favourite of mine is the smoked cod risotto starter- to die for. I think its one of the best restaurnts in Wicklow

A party of 5 of us went here on a Thursday night. We choose from a combination of the value menu and the Al a Carte menu. The main course choice on the Al a Carte was in my opinion a little poor but very good for the fish lovers; all fish bar duck and steak. I had fillet of beef salad to start and duck for main with a side order of courgette all were excellent. Everyone else was happy with their choices and had very positive comments. The red wine drinkers had a great value Tempranillo from the value menu which was lovely. The resturant was busy and with a large tabel opposite us very loud, thanksfully they finished before we had got to the main course so that was ok. I would book the front of the resturant the next time. Service was a little hit and miss in that some things were slightly delayed but as it was so busy and the staff were friendly that could be forgiven. Would highly recommend and am looking forward to my next visit
