I travelled to Waterford for a few days' break with my mother and sister and 3 of my sister's friends to celebrate my sister's birthday. A colleague who is from Waterford recommended McAlpin's as an excellent place for seafood, which my sister loves, so we decided to give it a go. The restaurant is tiny and resembles more of a pub, but has a lovely homely and cosy feel to it. The service initially was very friendly and we felt almost like old friends coming for a visit rather than customers from out of town (and abroad). We wanted to order mussels, but were advised that it is not really mussel season, hence I opted for the garlic mushrooms and my mum had the shrimp cocktail, the others had the smoked salmon. The mushrooms were gorgeous, the bread fresh and fragrant. For mains many of us had the scallops, mum had the crab bake and some had the seafood pie. The consensus was that the scallops were the best dish any of us had ever tasted anywhere - and we had a few ladies with us who are used to dining in 5 star restaurants regularly. The rest of the mains were also stunningly good. For desert we were told there is no menu but the lady who bakes gave us a list (an extensive one) of what she had on offer. Everything was excellent, and we left the place completely in awe of the fabulous food we had. At the end of the visit it got very busy and the service suffered a little as the staff were running off their feet, but we would not hold it against them, as otherwise our experience of this restaurant was superb. Highly recommended to everyone, I'm already planning a trip to Waterford for the sole purpose of getting to visit McAlpins again! I haven't stopped going on about it since we got back!

Have been visiting this restaurant for years and simply cannot find fault! The fresh seafood is amazing with my favourites being the crab claws and seafood pie. The menu is small and I always know what Im going to have before I go there, but it never disappoints. The menu has expanded over the years and now caters more for children/ non seafood lovers and has also introduced an early bird menu in recent years which is great value. Its a cosy restaurtant and as such the tables are small and close together, but dont let that stop you trying this place, the food is worth it!
