The Thatch is a quaint restaurant/bar. When you go in, they sit you by an open fireplace where you can read the menu and decide on what dish you want. There are seats all around the edge of the room. When you have ordered, you wait until the food is ready then they bring you through to the main dining area and the food is served immeditaltey to you. The food was great and lots of it! My boyfriend had duck which was perfectly cooked and tasty. I had the stir fry chicken which tasted good and had plenty of veg. The desserts were delicious too! Would definitely recommend this place and the food served. The service was excellent – very friendly and accommodating staff!

overcharged I reckon; Sunday lunch, lamb 12 50, desert 5 50, turkey 11 50 desert 5 50 charged 20 e each as it came off Xmas menu 2 courses 20 euro (on 11/01)questioned and told take it up with ?boss. Told at start that Xmas menu was a misprint, I won't go back and could not recommend it. Food generous portions but just ok, wine 6 50 per glass.

Taken here by somebody that had been several times before and highly recommended it, I was not disappointed. We had 4 course meal and each one was delightful. I had the duck and it was just as I wanted - the perfect meal. Staff friendly and helpful. Lovely setting. Will return for sure.

Lovely cosy restaurant with a really friendly atmosphere but the food has a lot to be desired. I think it's over priced for what it is, glorified pub grub. Has great potential to be a really great restaurant, just needs a bit of a shake up.

A perfect restaurant for a cosy meal on a damp and cold March evening. The welcome was as equally warm as the log fire burning. I cant fault anything, service is 5 stars, value is 5 stars. The quality of the food is outstanding. This is complemented by a great selection of wine. A hidden Gem just outside Birr, would highly recommend it and will most definately be returning.

dined in a group of 6 on easter saturday.had the early bird set dinner menu.30e for 3 courses plus tea and coffee and a glass of house wine.from the moment you cross the treshold you can see how well run the thatch is.we were brought in to a waiting area and given the menus .there was 7 starters,8 main courses,7 deserts on the menu and not one supplement. i had monkfish in batter served with salad to start,it was divine.my main course was duck.,equally as good as the starter.we also had the steak and the chicken.we got individual potatoes and veg and a large dish of garlic potatoes for sharing.everything was cooked to perfection.cheesecake.apple pie and icecream were chosen as deserts.followed by tea/coffee . after dinner mints completed a really good meal and a thoroughly pleasant dining experience from start to finish.unique setting one mile from birr,an old world inn that knows what irish hospitality means.
