The Helm has got to be the best restaurant in Westport. The value, service and quality of food is amazing. Always a welcome with Shayne and the crew. Would highly recommend. Try the chicken curry and the cheesecake, amazing!

The Helm is amazing for food. The menu is very varied. Something for everyone. With the main course comes a very generous side of chips and side of vegetables, all fresh and piping hot. The cheesecake is to die for. Value for money has to be about the best in Ireland never mind the west. Highly recommended.

On some other sites, this establishment is rated as number 2 in Westport. So on our last evening we ventured in (with no booking). First of all .. it's a bar. Ok, every table is filled with diners, but it's a bar. Because we hadn't booked we put our name down for a table for 2, and settled ourselves at the bar for a few beers. We were told up to 45 minutes for a table, so we were prepared to wait. 90 minutes later we were seated. The wait is not a complaint, just an observation. During our wait, numerous parties came in, many of which were dressed up in a more glamorous fashion than the bar surroundings might invite. And a great deal of those diners were clearly taken a little aback that it was simply a bar. Anyway, the food was great. Piping hot. And very generous in portions. The menu was really varied making it hard to chose something. The atmosphere was really good. Then, the bill ... really really good value. So, if you want a really good feed, with good atmosphere, in a pub grub environment and light on the pocket ... this is the place for you. I will return, and I may not book in advance, just so we can go with the flow again!

My husband and I ate lunch here as it was the closest place to the Westport House. We had seen the menu the previous night and noticed that the evening prices were more expensive by approximatey €10 at night then during the day so we decided to go elsewhere that evening but to come back for lunch the next day. We just ordered a toasted sandwich and I was left rather disappointed. First of all, I asked for just three fillings but I got an extra one - onions. This is something which might not bother many people but as I can't eat onions at all I was very annoyed. Apart from that we had to ask for the side salad and chips we had ordered and they had forgotten to give us. Food was very nice but it was just a toasted sandwich so it's not exactly something which is difficult to make. To be fair, the people at the table next to us ordered main courses like roast beef and the three of them ate everything which was on their plate without any complaints so I imagine that their food was also good. Good food and atmosphere but service could be improved - they don't seem to manage well with complicated orders. Not in a rush back but would eat there again.

The Helm is probably the best kept secret in Westport. The food is amazing, and the value is superb. The food just keeps coming in side orders which are included in the price, which is a nice change nowadays in restaurants. Shay and his dad are lovely hosts, very friendly and hospitable. They make every effort to make your visit enjoyable. We will be back.

Went here for lunch as we were told of its great reputation. The food was of a high quality using fresh ingredients however we have eaten in nicer places in the Westport area. The seafood chowder for starters was tasty but quite small, and there was very few pieces of fish in it, mostly diced carrot. The crab and salmon platter was lovely, with servings very generous of both fish. The battered cod, tartar sauce and chips definitely was the better choice though. Service was a bit slow and it took a while to grab someones attention but the food was quick to come out – if a bit too quick! Wouldn't be rushing back for lunch, maybe for a quick bite to eat in the evening when theres a bit of atmosphere.

This restaurant was highly recommended to us and we were really expecting something different. This is a very good pub that serves food but not exactly what I would describe as a restaurant. However I cannot criticise the food. I had the beef stir fry and the meat was of a very high quality and very well cooked. The atmosphere in the pub was very lively and a real Irish pub experience. Overall a very good eatery but not somewhere for a quiet meal if that is what you are looking for.
