AWARDS & PRIZES

In 1900, André Michelin published the first edition of a guide to France to help drivers maintain their cars, find decent lodging, and eat well while touring. In 1926, the guide introduced the star to note good cooking; two and three stars were added in the early 1930s. The guide awards one to three stars to a small number of restaurants of outstanding quality. Every year, the Bridgestone editors set out to find those restaurants that offer the best cooking and the best service in Ireland. This book features grand city restaurants, and tiny little one-room restaurants in the wilds of the country. There are restaurants located on islands, and restaurants that reverberate with the energy and mania of the city. The Irish Restaurant Awards recognise achievement and excellence in the Restaurant and Hospitality Industry throughout the 32 counties of the Island of Ireland in 21 categories and celebrate all aspects of the Industry from Chefs and Restaurants, Cafes and Gastro Pubs, to Food Producers, Local Food Heroes and Cookery Schools.

My Daughter and I just had afternoon Tea at Scholars Townhouse Hotel. This was a most enjoyable experience. All good homemade food presented by professional friendly staff. Can't think of a nicer way to spend an afternoon with good company in such beautiful relaxing surroundings. Would highly recommend!

The high point of this restaurant is the service and the setting. The restaurant is beautiful and set on very pleasant grounds. The service is flawless. Very attentive, very personable and friendly. The food is good but I don't love the menu. The wine list is extensive and they have recommended wines with certain courses which is a nice touch

We dined here for the 1st time after friends recommended it to us. The setting of the restaurant is something to be seen. The food really was 1st class I had crab & pickled cucumber starter with chicken supreme as the main course followed by apple and blackberry trifle. My wife had starter of pulled pork terrine with pork belly and garlic mash as the main followed by panna cotta with ginger, Everyone of the dishes were top of the range. We asked the waiter to recommend a white wine his choice as a very nice Australian which was way too easy to drink and really went with all of the courses it was great value as well at only 28 euro a bottle. I have to say that my better half wants to go back again as soon as possible and we will be back soon..

We cannot say enough about this restaurant...it has to be one of our favourite's. we were surprised to see a deal for this restaurant and delighted to see that eventhough it was a voucher deal we were not treated any way different to the other customers. The Food, Wine and Atmosphere is always great and the staff ever friendly whilst knowing not to bother you also..10 out 10 as usual from us...we will return soon.

I was a little disappointed on my last trip here for dinner. We ate in the bar and I ordered a prawn and smoked salmon salad that was advertised as having a chilli creme fraiche and chardonnay foam. When the plate arrived with smoked salmon of a rocket salad I was so hungry I tucked in straight away but when I asked the waiter were there components missing he said the chef was sorry and coffees would be on the house. The main of chicken caeser salad was nice but nothing to write home about. The staff here are always absolutely brilliant and the venue is stunning but the food lacks a bit of attention to detail.

We were six women who had not all met up in MANY years and who decided that a Sunday Lunch together would be a treat. Coming from areas (Dublin and Co Down) north and south we thought the Drogheda area was a suitable location. We were not wrong and found everything about Scholars absolutely perfect. From the warm welcome on arrival, to the friendly service in the charming small bar area while we waited for the arrival of everyone and on to the dining room for the meal, there was nothing to be faulted. When I made the reservation I was asked was there a purpose for the outing and as a result we each had a lovely personalised menu at our table. The presentation and flavour of the food was excellent and the house wine a great (and not expensive) compliment to it. We stayed for quite a few hours around the dining table finishing the wine and having a coffee and just relaxing and talking. We were under no pressure to move out and felt very comfortable and welcome for the entire visit. We will definitely use it again because of its convenient location but in particular for the quality of the food and service.

We ate here for our Valentines meal out. The restaurant had a special on and the place was packed out. They had plenty of staff on and the service was very good. I like the way they arranged the tables so you weren't sitting directly next to another twosome and we just had an absolutely brilliant night. The food was elegant and perfectly cooked the whole way through the meal. We ate venison which was on the Valentines menu and it was just gorgeous. Very happy with the price, we've paid more money for less and would definitely go to eat in Scholars again.

This is a lovely place to have a special meal or overnight stay.Very cosy relaxing atmosphere. The food is delicious and freshly cooked.I love the fact if you ask for wine its poured from a large bottle and not one of those small bottles. The rooms are clean and decorated to a high standard.Good value for money, will definitely go back.I also brought my children and they were made feel very welcome.

For our first visit, and a special birthday meal, I booked a table via email and was called back within about 20 minutes to confirm. We had a table booked for 7 pm on a very busy Mother's Day evening. The restaurant was packed. Our order was taken relatively quickly and efficiently, and the order was out in no time. The food was, to say the least, superb. Presentation, flavour all excellent. I always think that if you do not have to put salt or pepper on your meal, that is the measure of a great team cooking your meal. The food was piping hot when it arrived, with suitable time between courses, but not an overly long wait. What amazed us was the efficiency of the entire staff, from front of house (a warm welcome was received there), to the kitchen staff, no one was falling over each other, the food was flying out, and the atmosphere and value for money (€25 for 3 courses) unbeatable. We will definately be back.
