I had a dinner here for my birthday tonight.Very disappointed in overall experience.I had a sea trout for starter which was ok,my husband had pork belly which was a lot nicer than mine! Then for main course I had beef which was far too salty, after a couple of mouthful I decided I didn't want to finish it so we swapped the plate.Luckily my hubby had cod which was eatable...When I mentioned about the beef being very salty to the manager he just said because the beef is slow cooked with bacons in the pot for 6hours it can get salty but no salt is added...nIt might be just me who got the salty part of beef?? nHe didn't even check how salty it was.I would expect a lot more from that price!! I don't think I'll go back there again.

Dined here last Saturday night - had a voucher for an overnight stay with dinner. I was with my wife & 5 year old little girl. Setting was lovely & staff extremely professional & friendly. Menu was just right & not crowded with too much choice as some restaurants do. I had soup & my wife mackerel & both delicious. Our little girl had pasta bolognese which she loved. For mains my wife had the duck & I had the steak - both really tasty again & beautifully presented. Would have loved a little extra veg possibly but this is a minor complaint. Not huge desert eaters, my wife or I but ordered them anyhow as our little one definitely wanted some. All in all a great dining experience & the breakfast next morning was as good as any I've had previously also.

Stayed in the hotel last Saturday and dinner was part of the package. I'm not normally a fussy eater but out of 5 choices of starters I settled on something as normal as soup! The other choices were either blue cheese, beetroot cured smoked salmon (a bit boring), ham hock (not for every pallet) or duck sausage which came with a mustard and apple sauce which again is not for every pallet. I had sea trout for mains which was very nice but what it was accompanied by was not so good. My husband had rack of lamb which he enjoyed, albeit it was a bit tough. The highlight was a dessert of vanilla and lime cheesecake which was to die for! Enjoyed the food in the bar that day much more, the smoked salmon croque monsieur was delicious! I've stayed here lots of times and the food is generally very good. Maybe it was just a bad choice on the night.

As part of our Finance conference we stayed at the Carton Hotel. Staff were fantasitc and very helpful. We had dinner in the main dining room with a similar menu to the Lindon Tree. Food is of high quality and many compliments were given by those at the dinner. I also had lunch a few times while there and visiting other times. Everytime i was not disappointed by the standard and taste of what i was served.

Ate here lastnight with my partner and two others. The food was gorgeous. I could not fault it. Staff were very friendly and polite and service was excellent. €35 for a two course meal which is a bit pricey but well worth it. The restaurant wasn't too busy. I will definately be returning.

On a package deal as it was a special occassion 3 nights with one dinner. What a disappointment - We were asked how we would like our steaks, 3 opted for steak medium to well to be told you can only have it "RARE" "MEDIUM" or "WELL DONE" you cannot have a bit of both ways - we never heard of this before and were stunned! Our other member had opted for Duck. Starters arrived 3 again opted for duck - a lonely overcooked shriveled duck leg was presented on each plate - how sad . Pigeon arrived tough/over cooked like rubber. We were wondering if there was a chef on duty or reheats from the night before. Manager was busy looking after a table of 4 and spent majoirty of his time entertaning their table with wine and plenty of food large bowls of chips and potatoes were on that table. Our mains arrived BLACK steaks no veg just with sauce and large lardons (which got stuck on ones throat) on a plate - awful accompanied by a side dish of 4 chips each - Duck was rubbery reheated and served with a supposed potatoe cake yuck..... we gazed at the table of 4 and their bowls of chips and potatoes and wondered what/who they were to get such treatment..... (did we see one of them in uniform next day???)Tthe memory was so bad one left the table and her steak without finishing our her wine... we did have desert by 3 and one cheese board these were OK but our overall experience was disgust We did complain to Duty Manager on departure who took complaints on board and did not charge us for the wine... a small gesture but one we acknowledge. Beautiful place and grounds but we have a bitter taste in our mouths.

Restaurant response:
Dear Seanchailleach, Thank you for taking the time to post your review of Carton House. Please accept my apologies for the delay in acknowledging your review. It is disappointing to see that your visit to the Linden Tree was not a positive one. I am very sorry for the shortcoming in service which you experienced on this occasion. It is most unusual for us to get such negative feedback and I would welcome the opportunity of discussing it in person with you to ensure that I can follow up on my end and give our team the opportunity to improve in any areas of weakness that you may have encountered during your stay with us. Our chefs take great pride in ensuring that we provide local sourced seasonal produce, but obviously on this occasion we didn’t deliver to our usual standard. Also I am sorry that there was confusion over the side dishes and that you weren't offered to order these when placing your dinner order. Thank you once again for your valuable feedback which I look forward to having the opportunity of discussing with you so that I can identify where the errors were made. You can contact me by calling the hotel on 01-5052000 alternatively you can email me on pjoy@cartonhouse.com. Kind Regards, Paul Joy

food was top quality all round. for starters we had pigeon and scallops. then for the mains we had fillet steak and lamb. everything was perfectly cooked, excellant presentation and very tasty. the accompanying sauces were abit too sweet with the mains but it was still great. excellant service too. prices were abit expensive but given the setting and the occasion it was worth it!

We were staying in the hotel and had a dinner included as part of our package. We had an absolutely amazing meal. The food was excellently presented and tasted superb. The waiting staff were very attentive. Its lacking a bit in atmosphere as its such a huge restaurant but we had a fab table by the window and didn't mind too much. Wish we lived closer so we could return more regularly. Definitely worth checking out.

Our three-course meal at Linden Tree was included as part of our two-night package at the hotel. First thing we saw was there was no steak on the menu, or beef of any kind - just chicken, two or three types of fish, veg option and a lamb shank. My companion asked the waitress why, and she said they took it off the menu 'because too many people were ordering it'. As a steak lover, I was disappointed. The menu we ate from that night was not a 'package' menu - it was the only menu. The ambiance is unappetising - the minimalist, grey-beige decor is cold and bland, and there were no welcoming touches on the table - a tea light was half-heartedly delivered midway through our main course. We felt physically cold - it's a room with quite an air-conditioned feel to it but keeping a cardigan on was enough. It's the sort of room where you could be anywhere - on a cruise ship, or in any hotel anywhere. We felt no link between the restaurant and its local environment, either on the menu or in the decor. Food was served before wine - odd as they weren't short staffed. We were prompted by our waitress to order tap water (i.e. 'tap water yes?') which was also odd for a high-end eatery and made us wonder if she thought we looked a bit cheap! Duck confit starter was good, but a very small confit. Pork with pork belly (main) had flavour, but my pork medallion was dry and as there was little or no sauce, I couldn't finish it. Port belly was not crispy as descibed on menu and again, just a small square two-three inches of it was served. Our plates were lifted without comment. Desserts were nice and light, but tasted as though they had been refrigerated a long time, perhaps overnight. At no point were we offered coffees or teas, and the classic service mistake was made - our table was considered done and dusted once dessert was dropped down. We had to order our own bill and we paid it standing at the till. This is decent, not amazing food, but experience was marred by disinterested staff

Stayed in the hotel on Tuesday night with my boyfriend so we had booked a table in the restaurant as it was part of the package. There was a very good selection of starters, main courses and desserts on the menu. I had the Scallop with Pork Belly for starter and it was very tasty, my boyfriend had the Goats Cheese and it was really nice, both starters were well presented. The main courses were just as nice, I had the Salmon on Risotto which I really enjoyed and my boyfriend had the Pork which I tasted and it was perfect, I would have liked to have ordered a Steak or some sort of Beef dish but there wasn't any of that night on the menu but It didn't bother me and I was very happy with the Salmon on Risotto. The staff here I found to be very friendly chatty. The only thing I must say is they didn't come over to us during our main meal to see if everything was ok. When we did ask for the bill to pay for the wine the waitress took it over to us and a few minutes later when I wanted to pay I couldn't get anyone to come over for another 20mins. Overall though I didn't mind those couple of issues as they can happen anywhere and the staff did make our evening very enjoyable and the food was very good an we will course come back to enjoy another meal. I would recommend this restaurant for the staff and the food !

Went here for our wedding anniversary Fabulous hotel and staff but distinctly unimpressed with the Linden Tree The menu on the day was in no way exciting and the food while ok was late, wrong and incorrectly described! We could see what happened ou food went to the couple beside us, who said it wasn;t there's instead of giving it to us they brought it back to the kitchen and came back 10 minutes later with it, having obviously been left to sit under heat for that period, as one of us was having lemon sole, it was easy to tell, the Duvk however was still tasty Desert was described as a chocolate caramel fondant...it was a chocolate orange fondant... nobody informed us of the change and it was brought to the table Service was slow and unresponsive there was certainly no "magic touch" and to be honest I'd rate the food in the hotel bar on a par and the service far superior!

Restaurant response:
Dear Louca, Further to your feedback above, I am extremely disappointed to hear that the Linden Tree did not exceed your expectations on this occasion. It is extremely uncharacteristic and as you will see from the opther reviews below, certainly not the standard we expect from the restaurant. I have communicated this to the restaurant Manager and the Head Chef. I am delighted that you were otherwise impressed by the Hotel and the Team. I hope you will consider visiting us again in the near future. Please contact me directly if I can be of any assistance. Kind Regards, Kelly Scales Guest Relations Manager Carton House Maynooth Co. Exceptional service and exceptional food. Not a massive fan of the hotel (however the staff seem very helpful) but have to say that the restaurant is top notch. It is costly but you get what you pay for. Good portions also. Atmosphere was good also even though it was the first wknd of January. Highly recommended.

Just returned from an overnight stay at the Carton House which included a meal in the Linden Tree . It was easily the nicest meal we have had in a very long time !! The starters were beautiful,my husband had pidgeon for the first time and it was really nice and I had scallops served with crispy pork belly - delicious !! For main course he had beef served with carrots and chestnuts and I had turkey and ham with sprouts both were amazing. I never tasted turkey and ham like it in my life it was fab !!!! The restaurant was busy but it didn't have any effect on the service which was friendly and very efficient. I would highly recommend this place even if you don't stay in the hotel you must try it !!
