Returning from an appointment in Galway we stopped in Karibas for breakfast on the way home and from the moment I saw the window display my expectations were high as I love all things traditional. I can confirm my expectations were exceeded when we went in and the place was buzzing, lovely warm welcoming environment, great service and a great irish breakfast (there was a wide choice of other breakfast options also). We enjoyed our time there and as a treat we took some chocolate biscuit cake and a caramel slice home for later and I would be tempted to make the journey back from Limerick again for some more! I would highly recommend this place for a visit. I'm also aware that they are big supporters of all things local which I think is very important particularly in these times.

Like many other travelers, we are frequent faced with the question "Where will we stop for lunch/breakfast/dinner, etc" Very often we end up stopping in some bland motorway or filling station location because we just don't know any better in the locality. On this occasion we got off our Dublin/Galway motorway route, and decided to wander through Ballinasloe in search of somewhere to lunch. Quite accidentally, we parked near and found Karibas Restaurant - 7, Society Street - and had one of the best meals we have had in a long time! A busy and buzzy restaurant, Karibas is a little old fashioned in it's interior design, and we did not notice any menu on display outside. Luckily for us, we persevered! My wife had fresh mackerel fillets, and I had a duck and hoisin sauce wrap. Both were delicious and perfectly cooked and presented. The side vegetables were also done to perfection - especially the sauteed potatoes which had that wonderful blend of crisp outside and fluffy centre - tricky for some the best to get right! Coffees were perfectly prepared, and the overall service, friendliness and efficiency was excellent. The table layout, in particular the section hidden away on the left, could use some imaginative re-structuring - as could some of the wall colouring! However, all else was so good, I am not reducing the full 5 stars! Well done Family Ward! Delighted to have somewhere - at least on this route - that's worth looking forward to stopping at.
