AWARDS & PRIZES

Most star-rated hotels have their own restaurants and these are inspected by the AA. As with independent restaurants, rosettes from one to five are awarded annually to hotel restaurants for the quality of their food. Not all restaurants receive an AA award, but will generally serve enjoyable food. We seek out the best establishments in every part of Ireland for inclusion in our guides and, because we work independently and without charging a fee, you know that we can be trusted to lead you to the best places over a wide range of categories. In 1900, André Michelin published the first edition of a guide to France to help drivers maintain their cars, find decent lodging, and eat well while touring. In 1926, the guide introduced the star to note good cooking; two and three stars were added in the early 1930s. The guide awards one to three stars to a small number of restaurants of outstanding quality. Fodors helps you unleash the possibilities of travel by providing the insights and tools you need to experience the trips you want. And we are confident that were giving you the best information because our products are written by people who live there. We seek to hire local writers who know their destinations better than anyone else. Our worldwide team of over 700 travel writers bring you the latest, most accurate coverage, and like trusted companions, reveal local treasures and everything you need to know before you arrive. This place is so over rated I was not impressed. The vegetarian menu is so limited. I asked if I could have something else off the menu and was told no. The woman who served us then talked about her commute with the couple opposite us and was so rude and unpleasant to us. You should try to accomodate the customers palate instead of saying no. This place is pretentious and I dont know why. Sadly disappointed

A most enjoyable evening in an excellent restaurant. We had an wonderful meal made superb by the main course of 28 day aged beef for two. Beautifully cooked to perfection. We will return for another visit soon,

Went here with my brother and dad on Christmas Eve and had the chicken roast- so fab! I actually spilled water all over mine and the waiter simply replaced it right away no issue at all- this is consistently excellent food, lovely staff and a beautiful location, decor and warm atmosphere!

Probably one of the best meals we ever had, was had at the West. The smoked chips are just fantastic. Food was excellent, atmosphere was electric if not a little loud. Will be back the next time I will be in Barna

I went here with my Dad late on Friday evening- great atmosphere but still we could hear each other across the table, despite the World Cup on in the background. We both had the warm chicken salad and some wedges- fab food, good service and lovely, clean facilities. I go back here every time I come to Galway! Fab!

Very enjoyable meal here overall. We were given a nice booth-style table and I had mussels to start and a fillet steak for mains. Both were good but by far the star of the show was the winelist which features around 400 wines with some real gems in there like the ridge Cab from California which went with the steak beautifully. Vina Bujanda is another excellent red, a Spanish tempranillo and it's only 30 euros on this winelist which is more than fair. They will decant your wine here too without making a fuss. This place is ideal for a leisurely meal with good fresh food and sensational wines

We were a party of 2 adults & 2 children. Wasn't sure about bringing the children aged 9 & 14 here but needn't have worried. The staff were very welcoming & most accommodating. The food was lovely - small portions but very tasty. The duck salad starter was tasty but with just a few tiny shreds of duck!!The duo of pork was fabulous-melt in the mouth meat with lovely vegetables to accompany. We had the 3 course taster menu which was good value. The waiting staff was just excellent without any of the pomp or pretentiousness often associated with a restaurant of this calibre. I will return!!

Went here with husband on strong recommendation of a work colleague, who likened it to the quality of the White Gables. Overall, we were quite disappointed and underwhelmed. On a positive note, the setting and ambience of the restaurant is very nice, very modern and we were given a large window table even though there were only the two of us. The menu was really promising and there were plenty options to choose from. The food, however, was disappointing and, for what we got, overpriced. I had the turf smoked duck with foie gras for starter, followed by hake on a polenta cake for main and selection of homemade ice-cream for dessert. husband had rabbit croquettes to start, the fillet steak for main and chocolate study for puds. I'd ordered the fish course, wary that the duck might be a heavy / large starter but I needn't have worried - it comprised 5 tiny slivers of duck with a thimble of foie gras in pastry on the side; whilst it tasted nice, at €8.50 I felt it was not good value. the fish was fine although the polenta cake was greasy and bland, even with some little shrimp through it. Hubby's rabbit cakes were tasty and the steak was fine, if on the small side (again, not good value at €27.50). Our veg comprised some nice seasonal vegs but, strangely, a soggy, overdone "potato gratin", which was a few layers of sliced potatoes dripping in oil with the top layer hard and dry, not the creamy, cheesy dish we expected. The chocolate dessert was fine, nothing special, and the homemade ice-cream was tasteless and crumbly. With wine (a NZ sav blanc €33.50, our first choice was not available), a black coffee and a monte cristo coffee, our bill came to €118 for two, which we felt was very overpriced for what we received. Add in tip and taxis in and out of Barna, it turned out to be an expensive but unfulfilling experience.

The west restaurant in the 12 hotel is a beautifully cosy and elegant restaurant. Professional and most importantly, friendly staff are on hand. When they saw me dining on my own I was brought newspapers and wine magazines to peruse. What a great touch which I have never been offered before in any restaurant. 12 out of 12! To start i had Mackerel with pickled fennel and horseraddish cream to start which was simple and delicious the inhouse bakery bread selection was excellent and fresh ( not heated up in a microwave unlike some restaurants) I opted for the braised beef special. Wow! probably the most tender piece of meat I've had. The chef must have cooked it for a week! I finished of my meal with the cheese board and a tasting trio of desert wines and port. What a great idea and delicious also. A gem of a restaurant with a delightful atmosphere, friendly and attentive service and fabulous food prepared and presented by an accomplished chef. I ll be back.

I just cant fault this restaurant in a single way. 1. The food was truly amazing. As good as Michelin star joints in Dublin IMHO. Fish was divine and the steak was even better 2. The value was superb. 3. Service from a person who obviously loved his job and employer was warm, attentive and knowledgeable. 4. Ambiance and atmosphere were just right - relaxed, special and memorable. Overall I cant wait to return and will stay the weekend in the hotel (driving from Dublin) just for the experience. Well done to all. PS this is my first 5 star rating BTW.
