Thought We'd try this place again, as every where else that we looked at were booked out on the night. Once again, over all disappointed. The best thing about this place is the atmosphere and Service is not bad either although a bit contrived. I had a Crispy Prawn Cocktail in a Sesame Slaw for starters, my wife had the Goats Cheese which she said was enjoyable. But at €9.95 I was very shocked to receive 3 small battered and deep fried Prawns which had obviously come from the freezer and a small bit of slaw!!!! I then had the Pork Belly which although tasty was closer to a Starter in size than a main as the 2 perfectly squares of Pork were very small and contained more fat than meat. Wife had the Roast chicken breast which she said was no better than carvery? Sides are then extra so it is verging on very expensive carvery style food. Have to say for a second time very disappointed and will not be returning.

We received a voucher for Cookes and ate here for the first time on a Saturday night recently. The menu was quite limited. I had the fish cakes for starters which were good but to be honest I expected better and the promised chilli sauce was in fact ketchup! I chose the salmon for mains which was delicious. It was a good sized portion, served with creamy mash and spinach. My boyfriend had the steak and chips and he really enjoyed it. The service was excellent, the waitress was very attentive but gave us time to relax and there was no rush to move us once we had finished our meal. We had an new Zealand wine to accompany our meal & it was very tasty. Overall a very good experience. I would return to Cookes and perhaps try the early bird menu the next time.

Went here with my husband Sat night, love this kind of place really cozy and old world feel so was really looking forward to it, service was pretty good only thing I didn't like was that the jug of water was already left on the table so wasn't nice and cold. My husbands dinner was lovely, seafood chowder followed by salmon but I have to say I was a little disappointed with mine - fish cakes to start were a bit mushy and then had monkfish which itself was lovely but there was a bit too much going on, on the plate and the saffron rice was just very bland. Overall was a nice enough experience but not as good as I thought it was going to be.

Went to Cookes for a friend's birthday and it was a disaster from start to finish. The interior is alternative and with a room to ourselves (due to the large number), it felt a bit special. The starters were the best of a bad lot. Although the 'deep fried' cheese dish did come out cold. The staff who were initially attentive, seemed to forget about us and we endured a lengthy wait for the mains. Many of the group ordered steak medium/rare, each one coming out well done. When sent back, everyone else had finished their meal by the time the steak returned. The chicken dish saw a charred chicken breast on a plate with what resembled tinned tomatoes thrown over it, again it had to be sent back. The beef in the stir fry was impossible to chew and the duck was so tough you could have stood on it. Aware of our dissatisfaction, the staff then practically abandoned us for even longer. Eventually they provided plates and forks for the birthday cake that had been supplied to them. The whole appalling experience took over three hours and we couldn't wait to get out of there and hit the nearest chipper. Needless to say we won't be returning.

Having noticed Cookes to be closed for a short period for renovations, i decided to opt for a visit on its re-opening, I have always been a fan of this restaurant and have enjoyed numerous family occasions and indeed my own graduation there. However from my visit i have noticed that the service has changed significantly, young students with a lack of understanding on proper service and knowledge, accompanied with a somewhat drab and lack lustre menu, im really not sure what the restaurant is aiming for? The building itself gives the illusion of a fine dining establishment and yet the menu suggests 'pub grub'.! and quite frankly i have enjoyed finer fare in pubs. (whatever happened to the lovely fish options, we were spoiled for in the past?) Perhaps its just teething problems, but i DO honestly think the owners have gone backwards from the fine establishment that once was, its a great shame. After my last visit i can honestly say i will not be returning.

Lovely looking restaurant and very cosi inside. Staff were fairly friendly but even though not bad service was not anything special either. I asked could we have 2 half side portions as one and was told bluntly no. This sort of rigidity annoys me as it is not a big deal. I had steak and looked for it medium to Rare i.e. 2/5. but it came well done. Pan fried Roast potatoes were also on the greasy side. No excuse as the restaurant was quite. I would compare the food quality to pub food but at restaurant prices. Lovely athmosphere shame about the rest.

We had a nice night here, The setting is very nice and we found the service very good and not rushed. The food was tasty but would have expected something better considering the prices. Even though it was a nice evening I would not be too excited about returning because the food was not very special. Wouldn't recommend against it, though.

First impressions very good, nice decor, atmosphhere and friendly greeting on arrival. However, after receiving our menus, we were asked twice in quick succession if we were ready to order. After we had just finished each course our plates were rushed away from us and the next course arrived almost immediately without any time to take in the experience. No time was allowed by the waiting staff between courses which meant we were left with a bill €110 (2 starters, 2 mains, 2 desserts, 1 coffee & half bottle of wine) for 1 hours dining. It felt like they were just trying to turn around the tables. Will definitely not return or recommend.

This is a quaint well laid out restaurant. Jazz music is provided later in the evening. Food, for the three courses was well prepared, although the tapas/paté starter for two would not be to everyone's taste. Medium prices make it a reasonable cost and service was excellent. Recommended.

Atmosphere very nice in this restaurant, perfect for an intimate evening with friends or family. Food was nice but could be better for the price. Main course of Monkfish & Scallops was saturated in garlic & over powered the dish. Service was good. Overall enjoyable night but a bit pricey for what you get. Beware of very steep stairs.
