Busy restaurant with a good buzz - mix of locals and tourists. Food was lovely - really tender calamari with a nice dip to start and the freshest fish n chips ever. Defo order fish dishes rather than meat/chicken. Wine a tad expensive

Our family have been coming to this restaurant for many years. We brought close friends today and were more than disappointed by small portion size (mixed grilled fish platter) and overall food quality; even chips were soggy. Please educate or bring back the previous Chef and review prices against standard of food, as costs seem to have increased without corresponding increase in food quality.

Have been coming to this restaurant for years, one of my favourites. However, recently it has become quite expensive. Cutbacks such as no complementary bread on arrival, minimal side salads and more limited menu choice, On the night I visited it was busy, service was slow and not up to usual standards. Disappointing to see a good and popular restaurant penny-pinching!

The food was delicious but I felt it was over priced. We had got the small prawn pil pil to share as a starter but it only came five prawns and one slice of bread which seemed a bit stingy for €10.00. The fish and chips were delicious, two really nice pieces of fish. The fish pie, while it was tasty, did not warrant a price tag of €20. It did not come with any side dishes and there was not a huge amount of fish. I would definitely go back as the staff was lovely but I think I would just order a few starters and share them.

Hi we had a lovely meal in the oar house on Sunday. Everything was really good. The place was buzzing lots of people for a sunday night. As usual the food was really good. The only thing that I thought was a bit expensive was the caraf of wine which was nearly the exact same as a bottle of the wine we purchased. Not to sure if they made a mistake however let it go. The service was really good and the waitresses very friendly and knowledgeable. We will defo be back soon.

We hadn't booked and the restaurant was buzzing - Sunday lunch on a fabulous sunny day. The hostess didn't stress despite the queue of people hoping to get a table. We waited only 5-7 minutes before being seated at a table in the sunshine. The service was second to none, the atmosphere was fantastic and the food delicious. We had a Scandinavian Herring salad with beetroot and potato which was stunning (best I've had since I lived in Sweden many years ago). Crab cakes which were also delicious served with a dip of dill, mustard and a few other ingredients. Fish and chips with mushy peas. Summer fruit meringue and a Baileys creme brulee. Still water and a glass of pinot grigio followed by a coffee. The bill came to 54€ which was not extortionate for the quality of food and service. Can't wait to go back :-)

On another trip to Howth we wanted to get some lunch and although we decided to try somewhere new, we inevitably ended up back at the oar house. The oar house is quite small and very very busy, but I find the staff do a great job of seating, serving etc.. without making the place feel hectic. I felt we were very well looked after by the waitress. The place is also very welcoming and accomodating of children which is big deal for us. Like other times we visited we opted for a variety of small dishes. The dublin bay prawns were excellent, the batter was nice and crispy but the prawns didn't suffer and were succulent. I tried the cajun calamari which was a great twist on a classic dish. The howth crab cakes have to be tasted as words can't do them justice. Also worth mentioning were the buffalo prawns which were prawns served in franks buffalo sawuce, which, love it or hate it, is refreshing outside of the box type dish. To finish I had the asian soup, which struck a brilliant mix of seafood, tomato, lemongrass and chilli, with each bringing just the right amount of flavour so as to not dominate the dish but actually compliment each other.
