A warm and welcoming interior with an old-fashioned feel, an open turf-burning fireplace, classic signage and characterful bric-a-brac stirring memories of a bygone era are just some of the atmospheric features of The Bloody Stream at Howth, one of north Dublin’s most attractive and popular bars, where the byword is hospitality.

Add an extensive menu that includes mouth-watering seafood dishes made from catches landed locally, a Mediterranean-style beer garden and a rich diversity of live music every evening and you have all the elements that make The Bloody Stream a very special venue indeed.

Located just below the Howth DART station, its live music and late night bar create a real party atmosphere that’s proven a major attraction for locals as well as those travelling from Dublin city centre. In the heart of the picturesque town of Howth and its impressive harbour, The Bloody Stream has plenty of parking nearby and is particularly popular among tour groups. It’s the perfect spot for those looking for great food and drink in pleasant surroundings …..and with that indefinable craic added in for good measure!

We visited the Bloody Stream for food and a drink on Sunday afternoon, in the middle of the Prawn Festival. While the food was ok and the price was as expected the service was absolutely terrible. We sat outside in an area being covered by an arrogant and rude waiter who strutted around like a peacock. He didn't smile, wasn't friendly or polite and did everything he could to make the patrons feel uncomfortable. It was obvious he didn't want to be there. When we ordered drinks he openly tutted when one of our group asked for a rock shandy. We were a bit taken aback and so none of us commented. We asked for water for the table and had to wait about 20 minutes and ask at least twice more before we got it. He made more smart remarks when we ordered our food, commenting on the fact that we ordered burgers at a Prawn Festival. He was even more rude to other patrons who accidentally sat in the outside area but were not eating. He quite abruptly told people that if they just wanted a drink they had to go inside or to a small area reserved at the end of the outside space. I particularly noticed him being rude to a young couple who sat down to have a quick drink and feed their baby. He was insistent that they move out of the area reserved for eating and so they ordered a bowl of chips which he almost threw at them. I understand that, at busy times, it may be necessary to reserve space for diners but The Bloody Stream is a pub first and foremost and an outside area is not usually restricted to diners only. The lady who served us our food was almost as rude as she nearly shoved my plate into my hands saying "can you just take this one". Based on this service I would never eat or drink at the Bloody Stream again and certainly wouldn't recommend it.

Limited enough menu - no wine list provided. My colleague chose a bottle of Pinot Grigio and it was Argentinian. I felt it one is buying a bottle - a menu could be provided. Not sure if I would return - nothing overly exciting.

As soon as we entered the packed restaurant, I notice a strong smell of smoke which I later assumed to be coming from the fire, turf maybe? We have eaten here several times and have never been let down by the food, but when we got home, our clothes smelled as if we had been in a room full of cigarette smokers. On the positive side, the staff could not have been friendlier.

Having been here a couple of weeks ago we opted to have lunch here again on a Thursday afternoon. As the weather was great for this time of year, the area outside was completely full and we ate inside in the area just off the bar. The menu here is not the most extensive but it provides a decent choice and the daily specials are really good value. This time we opted for the fish and chips which was the special of the day. It arrived really well presented on a wooden board and with the fish and chips wrapped in paper fashioned to look like a sail with a wedge of lemon skewered through. It was accompanied by minted peas which were okay and a tartare sauce. The fish itself was delicious and perfectly cooked with a crispy batter just how it should be and the chips were great. Service here is nothing to write home about but the people are polite and not intrusive. If a pub lunch or casual dining are what you're looking for, this does the job very well.

right beneath Howth DART station – which can be really really convenient! yes, it is a pub – but very tasty restaurant options (eg the steak!!) if you don't want to go further up Howth peninsula! cosy atmosphere, possibly one of the best outdoor/smoking areas on the north side!

Very poor food - avoid! After a hike in Howth my friend and I dined here. The restaurant wasn't very busy but there was still an atmosphere. We were shown to a table straight away and given menus. We ordered within 10 minutes of arriving. The staff were pleasant enough. Despite the restaurant not being busy we were waiting 45 minutes on our food. We were delighted when it arrived but that was short lived. I ordered the salmon (€13.95) which was nice. This came with corn on the cob - which was frozen corn pieces as there was no fresh corn delivery that day and they forgot to mention it. It also came with a teaspoon sized portion of coleslaw. My friend ordered fish & chips (€14.95). Again the fish was lovely, but the 'mushy peas' were pureed into a slimy liquid - I'm sorry I didn't take a picture of it to post here as neither of us have ever seen anything like it (nor do we want to again!). We heard the party of 6 beside us complaining about it at their table also. It is worth noting that this restaurant is adding a 10% mandatory service charge on all orders on Saturday & Sunday which is excessive. The food is pricey enough without adding extra onto the bill. A tip is at the diners discretion so we felt that was cheeky of the restaurant. As a good will gesture, the service charge was removed from the bill due to the 'mushy peas'. However, that did not make up for this awful dining experience for which we were not going to pay a service charge for anyway. I'd definitely give this place a miss...there are plenty of other options nearby!

After landing on the west pier after a great ferry trip from Dun Laoghaire I chose this after scouring a lot of the over priced restaurants on the way. What is it with Howth, do the restaurants have a conspiracy to charge rip off prices just because fish is landed there + the location& they play on that. Price wise this didn't fare any better but I was attracted by the open fire and memories of the great scampi dish I used to have here. So though the scampi was a rip off at €17.95, mouth watering memories made me choose it. What a disaster it was. Gone were the umpteen, breaded scampi I used to get to be replaced by about 6 large scampi cooked in greasy batter horribly presented on a skewer. The chips weren't any better, hard & unpleasant, I even heard the approx. 10 year old at the next table refusing to eat them. If kids don't know good chips, I don't know who does. My request for lots of onion & a little tomato was served the other way around. To be fair the lovely waitress was very apologetic and offered me a replacement meal. I chose the fish pie at 12.95, probably the cheapest main course you'll get in a restaurant in Howth. It was nice enough, nothing special; top heavy with mashed potato & a nice parmesan crust though I didn't taste any smoked haddock in the pleasant sauce. I refused chips with it, told them "don't even go down that road", fluffy they were not! The waitress was again very apologetic however I won't be rushing back here again or come to think of it, Howth, for a meal. I just couldn't afford it. There are too many better value deals and far superior food to be found elsewhere that doesn't have the delusions of pretentiousness that Howth appears to have.

Have been here a couple of times and it never fails to impress. The food, especially the seafood, is top class. We had the chowder and fish cakes to start, then the sea bass and traditional fish and chips for mains. Very tasty food and beautifully presented. The only thing that I found fault with was the chips, they were not great. Will definitely be back here again!
