Cates is a real gem in Donabate. Whether you only want a coffee to break the day, a great value breakfast, or a full dinner at a great price.

I went for a quick coffee and scone.. nobody came to my table so I had to go and order from them - I asked did they do scones and said yes but werent on display. Scone came from kitchen and it was obvious it was defrosted. Wouldnt go back - place to cramped too

The cafe is fairly small and very little natural light - tables are close together. Both doors were ajar and we sat in a corner to the side to avoid draughts. I ordered a mexical chilli beef wrap and coffee and my companion ordered the all day breakfast and asked for it with two poached eggs. The breakfast was a well priced option but the poached eggs were rock hard and also tasted very strongly of vinegar, so were inedible. I was brought a tea instead of coffee and I reminded the waitress that I had ordered coffee. We didn't have time to reorder the eggs but when I was paying I said that the eggs were hard and hadn't been eaten. However the waitress charged for the full amount and was unapologetic about the eggs. We often cook poached eggs ourselves for breakfast and I object to having to pay for poor quality inedible food when I'm out.
