The restaurant Mamma Mia defies the 'location. location, location' mantra that all businesses should adhere to. Situated on Grattan Street, near Holles Street Hospital, it will not attract too much walk up business, but the quallity of the food makes it worth a detour. The brainchild of builder Clint Hamilton, an Italophile with experience of renovating many of Dublin's Italian restaurants, who decided to try running one himself. Hamilton has devolved much of the responsibilty for the food and menus onto his Sardinian chef Manuel, and like all good Italian cooks, his watchwords are simplicity and quality. Having relied on the lunchtime trade for the last year, the restaurant recently opened for evening meals. The meat is organic, the desserts are home-made, and the prices are keen.

We had booked a table and were put outside in the extremely cold porch even though when the booking was made there was no mention of out side. We even moved table to try and get a warmer spot, unbelievably it was colder. To make matters worse the lights "outside" were on a timer and kept going off. The waitress was very unfriendly and surly and didn't seem to care about the customers outside. She spent her time inside only dashing out at the last possible moment to do clearing etc. The food was good but everything else needs to be better.

Went for lunch today and really enjoyed it. I had Pizza Picante and my friend had Pasta. Both were delicious and were combined with a nice atmosphere and attentive service. I highly recommend Mamma Mia!

Went there for Breakfast and was really disappointed more so because we have eaten there in the evenings and it has normally good, that's when we said we'd try the breakfast. Hard to understand why scrambled eggs could go so wrong - one with pancetta and the other with tomatoes. We asked if they were using fresh eggs and were assured that was the case .... well both dishes were tasteless and overcooked. We had 2 latte's which were fine and then we asked for a croissant, which was stale ....... definitely won't be returning

Fabulous Italian. Not much to look at from the outside, but so friendly, unpretentious, delicious always. They will make the meat dishes into vegetarian dishes if you ask. My favourite.

Went for Lunch and had the pasta special with a creamed broccoli sauce. The service was prompt and friendly. This place is so small that you need to get there before One unless you fancy sitting outside (although blankets are provided). My pasta was ok but lacked a bit of flavour in the sauce, it didn't stand out as great but was perfectly edible. Other pasta dishes around us were presented better and looked to have more ingredients. Partner had a fantastic Italian Pizza which was very traditional. Will definitely go again for Pizza.

I went here on a Thursday night with a group of people and ended up taking almost the whole place. The atmosphere was lovely, with the open kitchen and cosy space. The open kitchen provides great entertainment as well since you can see how the chef prepares everything. I had the mussels for a starter and they were lovely though I would have liked a bit more sauce with them. The antipasto place that some of our group had looked great. For main I had the seabass which was nice otherwise but had way too much oil on top of it. The pizzas were strange shape (rectangular) but tasted very nice. The service was friendly and we kept getting water without having to ask for it. I would definitely go back.

Went for a family dinner in Mamma Mia's last night - 10 adults. Was such good fun. The place is tiny, but this just enhances the atmosphere. We shared three antipasti plates (chef have us two of the prawn specials on the house), then had a selection of pastas and some had the beef. All the food was fantastic - such good value. Had lots of wine, beer etc. but couldn't believe the bill - must be some of the best value in Dublin. Would definitely recommend for a lovely night out - great staff!

This place is a hidden gem. Only spotted it because of the banner at the bottom of the street. Loads of parking helped. The food is delicious, the service slightly chaotic but charming. You have to try the tiramisu. Intend to go back next week, and the week after that, and the week after that...

I love this place! I work nearby, so I get my morning coffee from Mamma Mia, which is delicious (and I would consider myself somewhat of a "coffee snob"). Also like to come here for lunch with co-workers. The food is fab - truely authentic Italian (which I really haven't found elsewhere in Dublin). My favourite pasta is the mushroom and ham in creamy sauce, but the menu changes frequently so I enjoy trying new pasta dishes when I can! The soup is also gorgeous - and it's made fresh with whatever ingredients are in season. The service is fab - friendly and efficient. The place can get very busy during the lunch hour, so book ahead! Alternatively you can get food to take-away, which is handy. I highly recommend Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia is a hidden gem!! I went on a friends recommendation and she was right! The food was delicious.. I have been to Rome a few times and you would know that the chef in Mamma Mia's is a Italian and knows his stuff! It is small but cosy place and you can see them preparing the food. The staff are friendly and very attentive but the best thing is about Mamma Mia's is the value for money!!. I have been to authentic Italian restaurants but the portions are small and expensive. I would recommend the mozzarella and tomato salad for starters and then the Gorgonzola pasta...mmmm.. mouthwatering... The only negative I could find, was we were a while waiting on a table ( so a make reservation) but the manger gave us a complimentary drink while we waited so it wasn't to bad.....overall rating 5 stars...Mary Ann Smith.
