La Peniche on board Barge Riasc is an unparalleled experience in Dublin and is situated on the 200 year old Grand Canal, just ten minutes from Stephens Green.

As the name suggests – for anyone that speaks French; La Peniche is a barge. It is a craft that steps the guest back in time as soon as they "come aboard".

DO NOT GO HERE, not only are they rude but they are thiefs. If I could put 0 stars I would have. Began the night super pleasant. Ended up being the worst night of my vacation so far. Was charged for 5 dinners that were not served, when asked for those 5 dinners we were told no, wouldn't you think if you're paying for food (especially expensive food) you should atleast have some? Manager was so rude, was not responsible or respectful. Paid over 500 dollars, when majority of the things we were charged for was not even served. After explaining all of this to the manager, he was still rude and demanded the money, ended up having to pay for the food and left extremely upset and completely ruined my family's trip. Could have had a much better dinner (quality wise) and experience at McDonald's.

Had a great evening! Really relaxed and friendly. The food was delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful. We went on the deck then the sun came out. This was really great as we all got fantastic photos with a beautiful backdrop.

Working in Ballsbridge, I'd walked past La Peniche every day for months thinking what a great experience this would be for my wife and I when we can find a babysitter for a very rare adult evening to ourselves. I booked my reservation two weeks in advance and the day before our twelfth wedding anniversary I've just received an email stating they're cancelling my reservation due to a mechanical problem. Now I get to find and book a reservation somewhere else for a Friday night with less than 24 hours to do so. If this is how they treat a potential customer then I can only imagine the poor quality of service we'd have received had we actually dined there. Maybe they did us a favour cancelling our booking for us. Point being, they'll never see my custom cross their bow. Thanks for nothing, La Peniche.

Lovely experience, food is ok, although expected higher standard for the price and better service considering a service charge on the overall total is applied. Did not like the "mistake" at the end with the bill which was corrected. Nice to have something different!

Probably wouldn't have bothered with La Peniche if we hadn't availed of a 50% discount voucher from MenuPages - but very glad we did. The barge is very nicely fitted out, service is excellent, and the mini cruise on the canal is delightful! In between courses we wandered up on deck and enjoyed seeing Dublin from a very different perspective. If you have never been on a boat going through a lock before, you will find that aspect very interesting! It helped that we had a beautiful evening to enjoy it! Given the "touristy" aspect I was pleasantly surprised by the food. The Charlemont Bridge Smoky starter was excellent as was the Vol Au Vant. Four of us all had different mains - all were excellent although the Tolouse Sausages portion was small. Deserts were unremarkable, but good. At €34.50 (for 3 courses) plus the €5 cruising charge, this is an expensive treat! However, it's a very pleasant and interesting evening!! Smyth's on Haddington Road is ideally located for a pre or post dinner drink!

I had a lovely evening on board La Péniche last week with my daughter who is just back in Dublin having being away for many years. I wanted to show her something different and La Péniche is just that, a uniique experience, cosy atmosphere and friendly attentive service. The food was also very good, with starters of Goat's Cheese and delicious Smokies. I had the grilled sea bass for mains and my daughter had the confit of duck, both were excellent. The menu is simple enough but what is surprising is the size of the kitchen and what they can produce in that small area. There was a 30th birthday party of around 25 people on when we were there and because of the size and intimacy of the restaurant there was a lovely atmosphere and we chatted to guests beside us as well as others on deck when we were going through the locks. It was a very relaxed evening and while the service was very attentive the staff still took the time to chat to us and explain the locks to us and the history of the canal. They clearly enjoyed being there too. We finished the evening with a sambuca each chatting at the bar with the "Captain". All in all a great evening and good value too. I was looking for something different and I got exactly that.

Nice different evening out, food good especially the duck. Lovely wine also. The only downfall is that the staff are a little too attentive. Was speaking with a friend while enjoying my main course I turned to speak, turned back and my dinner had been cleared!! Apart from that really lovely.

What a lovely evening this is. It's so much more than a meal out. We were booked for the early sitting, so before and the meal and whilst you wait for the guest to arrive we were seated on deck with a glass of wine whilst we watched the world and ducks go by! You then go below for the meal, a lovely quaint area, very cosy. I had goats cheese to start with cannelloni to follow. He had soup and wild boar sausages. With both had the brownie to finish and all washed down with a couple of bottle of Pinot Grigio! It may not be the best meal you will ever eat, but I would certainly recommended this night out, it was tasty good food in a unique surrounding. With extremely helpful and pleasant staff. Probably best suited to couples, as it is quite a close cosy setting!

Dinner at La Peniche, the barge on the canal by Baggot Bridge was a wonderful experience – I can’t understand why it is not better known, at the risk of sounding clichéd it is completely unique, affordable and we left feeling as though we were personal guests. The first and most obvious thing which impresses is the boat itself, pretty on the outside and really very beautiful on the inside. The interior - one could go on about it so I’ll abbreviat- is warmly lit, with red velvet banquets and highly varnished tables. There is a very clever and original function of a small button fitted on each table projecting a red light above which indicates subtly to the staff that you’re calling. The service was great - our waitress was charming and funny, and the chef asked us personally if our meal was alright. The menu is small and well thought out, with a French/Irish feel. We were assured that everything was made in the kitchen and this was evident throughout the meal. Starters were generous, and very good as were the mains (Toulouse sausages, duck confit) and dessert was fabulous – I can’t believe I finished a full dish of passionfruit mousse and my partner and son demolished an equally generous eton mess. I must admit it was a thrill to sail down the canal as we ate, not being a commonplace in this city. It created for that short while a ‘holiday feeling’ which is priceless.

I went to La Peniche for the first time last weekend with a party of 12. I had the Goats cheese and red onion marmalade tarte for starters and Wild boar sausages with mash for main which came with a really tasty apple cider sauce. As I was too stuffed to finish my dessert, our lovely waitress wrapped up my chocolate brownie to take home. It was all delicious. Overall, no one in our party could fault the food at all which was an achievement considering there was 12 of us. I knew beforehand it was a barge but I didn’t realise that the barge actually cruised down the Grand Canal. It was lovely to go out to sit on deck to watch the barge navigate through the locks. It’s a bit chilly in February but the friendly staff offered us blankets to keep us warm and came up to let us know when our next course was ready. I would give them 10 out of 10 for service. As for inside the barge, it is beautifully detailed, they have it spot on when it comes to creating the right ambience and atmosphere. I would highly recommend La Peniche. Couldn’t believe how reasonable the prices were too and I’m looking forward to going back.

Make sure you go to La Peniche on a Thursday night when they sail (?) up the Grand Canal through two locks and back! We received a warm welcome from staff when we boarded. The seating area is in the main cabin. Great care and attention was given to the food we ordered and given the price, surroundings and ambiance we felt we got value for money. You can sit upstairs and watch the barge navigate the locks if you wish and when your food arrives at your table the helpful and friendly staff will come up and let you know you food is ready. A wonderful experience that people should try at least once!

I brought my boyfriend her as a surprise for his birthday. We really enjoyed sitting on the deck above sipping champagne until it was time to order. Downstairs is small but cosy. Food was very tasty. A really relaxing enjoyable experience overall. Would definitely consider visiting again!

WOW ! What a fantastic dinner we had here. It was a special 30th Birthday and so had booked a group of 10 of us here for dinner. We started the evening with a few drinks on the roof of the Barge. This was such a great spot for a few drinks and was made even better by some great warm weather. I would definitely recommend this as a MUST during Summer! We then went below deck for dinner where the atmosphere was warm and cosy. The food was surprisingly good considering the fact that they only have a very small kitchen onboard. It was also very good value at €30 for a 3 course meal. The service was efficient, friendly and very relaxed. The evening is made even more special by a trip along the canal, which was great fun. After dinner another few drinks were had back on the roof area of the barge. I can honestly say that this was one of the finest meal experiences that we have had in Dublin and have already recommended this to all our friends and family - and will continue to do so...

We had a social nite out here from work, all of us were expecting good things & the menu looked fab. 4 of us gave back starters which was pate, there was a thick layer of white greese on the top it was disgusting to look at. However the staff was very nice & exchanges it for us I got the chrozio salad which was not much better. The chicken was very dry & the mash freezing cold, some of the others got sausages & mash which was freezing aswell. I didnt even order desert. All in all & very disappointing meal. There they tried to charge us an extra €90 for fuel !! No would not recommended it & will not be going back all 15 of us was not happy !!

Visited here on a Friday evening with a group. I'd been here about 2 years ago, and had a great experience so I was expecting good things. We had seen the menu on the website and there seemed to be a good selection. When we arrived however the menu was whittled down to a choice of 3 starters, 3 mains and 2 desserts, none of the starters or mains were vegetarian. I ordered the pate for my starter, lots of pate not much bread, but if I'd eaten it all I would have been pretty full. My main was essentially bangers and mash. Nice but nothing special. I had the chocolate brownie to finish but it was very dry, it could have done with some ice-cream or cream. Some of my group ordered the carrot cake which was delicious. All in all it was just an average dining experience. The food was definitely better on my last trip. I might try it again for the novelty value, and at €29.50 for 3 courses it's not expensive.
