Fishy Fishy Restaurant Kinsale, is an award-winning restaurant run by husband and wife team Martin & Marie Shanahan who are totally passionate about what they do.

Chef Martin Shanahan knows a thing or two about fish. His passion for seafood saw them open their original Kinsale Gourmet Store in 1990. A fish shop and deli in one, it regularly had queues of diners vying to be seated. This roaring success led them to expand the business and finally culminated in the opening of their Fishy Fishy Restaurant.

Martin's background as a fishmonger ensures that the restaurant is supplied with only the best of fresh fish from the waters off the south coast of Ireland. He takes pride in personally knowing who has caught his seafood that morning and ensures that only the freshest catch & local produce go onto his menu.

Been to this restaurant dozens of times over the years and it has always been fantastic until yesterday.nnSuppose I should start on the few positives from the meal. My monkfish was superb. Severed on a bed of mixed vegetable purée and topped with mushroom salsa verde. My wife's seafood salad was good. My 5 year old sons fish and chips from kids menu was hooked perfectly. That is pretty much the only positives I can give.nnThe negatives...... This may take a while. nnMy two year old daughters salmon was raw in the middle. Sent it back and thankfully cooked through second time of asking.nn The usual freshly baked bread accompanied with creamy salted butter and hummus that comes before the meal was replaced with bread that while not stale was certainly not fresh. The butter tasted more like shop bought spread. And no hummus came with it. Also had to request bread be brought out to us. nnMy wife's sticking toffee pudding was cold. Kids ice cream was just a scoop in a bowl of shop bought muck. No waffer, no toppings, just boring.nnWe ordered mussels in a cream sauce to share also. Overcooked, dry and flavourless. Despite there being several dozen in the bowl only a few were consumed and the rest were left to be put where they belong, namely the bin. nnThe real problem however was the staff. Straight away we noted that none of the long term staff that made this restaurant a pleasure to visit were in situ. Not sure if they have all just left permanently in the last few months or all take holidays at the same time of year.nn In their place they appear to have substituted them with a bunch of transition year students but not the type of transition year students that are eager to get to know the restaurant business but the ones who just take the job to tick the box that they had work experience.nnAsked for drinks and ketchup on four occasions. The coke came on first request. This was half way through meal. Ketchup came on third request. My son has about two chips left at this stage. Usually ketchup comes in ramekin but in keeping with the decline of Fishy Fishy it was served in a Hellman's plastic squeezey bottle. Dinner was finished and on fourth request for kids drinks we were told they were out of apple juice. Ok bring us orange juice instead. Served in large adult glass that my two year old couldn't even lift. Requested straw to solve the issue. Waiter comes past and dumps them on the side of table without even acknowleding us. nnThroughout the meal we were not once asked was everything ok. The waiters constantly passed our table with their heads down desperately hoping to avoid eye contact for fear of us requesting something complicated like apple juice or a spoon. nnWaited 25 minutes for bill. I asked twice for this surprise, surprise. nnWaiter asked was everything ok. I said no it was a shambles. He seemed surprised at this and said that he wasn't covering our section. That was his only response, no apology, no inquiry into what issues we had. But I'm happy for him that it wasn't his section. Keep up the good work but remember there is no I in team. nnI nearly always tip in restaurants even if the service is average but they at least try to make an effort. Today in Fishy Fishy our waiters did not try, did not care, lacked basic training. I did not tip and had no qualms about it. I sure they won't miss the extra 12-15 euro tip. And I'm sure they won't take it personally because they have no professional pride. nnI now need to start looking into a new go to restaurant for Kinsale. Won't be going back here in a hurry.

Was a bit apprehensive about dining here as the phone booking didn't inspire confidence, nor did the website. However, it didn't disappoint - food was very good, service friendly and helpful.

I was just at fishy fishy was very disappointed with a cod in batter and chips i oredered, the cod was very watery and had no season in fact the only bit of season on the entire plate was the tarter sauce which was probably squeezed out of a bottle. The chips i would have expected to be fresh and hand cut but i had my suspicions that they were not and later i could see bags of them lying by the kitchen door.

The restaurant is nice but stay away from the Salmon dishes there. They serve farmed salmon sourced from the the coast of Kerry. We all know that Farmed Salmon are dowsed with penicillen, fed artificial feed and artificially grown. You were warned!

We were recommended by family to visit and were delighted to find some of the best fish we've ever had. I started with pan seared tuna which was remarkable, truly mouth watering, my husband had the chili seafood medley salad, there was plenty of variety and the portions were very generous. For mains he had the monkfish which although he enjoyed, and I admit was pleasant..... paled in comparison the the John Dory. Absolutely extraordinary flavour on almond and tarragon sauce. The only murmurs would be that the vegetables were a bit 'samie' for both courses, and you'd want to LOVE your broccoli as thats all that came with my John Dory - although it was the greenest and most fresh I've had in a long time. The bread basket was surprisingly small and basic, although there was an accompanying hummus and it was replenished. The service was good except when it came to bill time and we were forgotten about. It is definitely an 'occasional' visit and worth it for the tremendous fruits of the sea experience!

Visited this well known restaurant with a group of four on a busy saturday evening in Kinsale. We all had Main courses and desserts, great choice of Seafood dishes available throughout. This is a very popular restaurant so booking for dinner is advisable especially during the summer months. For mains we had between us the legendry fish pie which was delicious, a Fish and Chips, a Vegetarian and haddock on a bed of root vegetable puree. For dessert they stock the amazing swiss Movenpick ice cream which is delicious. Fishy fishy is not cheap but the food is delicious. Only gripe was it came too quick, we had barley finished our bread and they were delivering the main course.

I visited Fishy Fishy for Sunday lunch with my boyfriend. We have visited here several times previously and have had fantastic food and service every time. I had their sweet chilli seafood salad, which was a very genrous size with lots of seafood, and my boyfriend the crab claws which were just as delicious.Their house wine is also great and very reasonably priced.

A friend and I dined at this restaurant on a Saturday evening, arriving at around 7:30 to a buzzy atmosphere. We were made to feel really welcome from the moment we walked in and the service was great throughout - really pleasant and constantly available without being intrusive. Crab salad starters were great and my bass main course was cooked to perfection. My friend was equally impressed and suitably pleased with herself for having recommending this place to me. I often find that I am too full for dessert but was determined to fit it in here and how happy I was that I did. The pannacotta was excellent. Whenever I visit Cork, I will undoubtedly go out of my way to visit this place - it's worth it. If I was being uber-critical, I would like to rid the restaurant of the cook books etc for sale but other than that I honestly couldn't have been happier.

I had a meal here with a big group of friends on Friday night. It lived up to its expectation and we really enjoyed ourselves. I had a taste of scampi to start and it was just prefect. I then had steak which was cooked correctly and tasted lovely. I know an odd choice for a fish restaurant but worth it. The staff were very efficient, friendly and also very discreet which was good. Two downsides - our large table was split which was ok but it would have been nice to know that when we booked. Also the choice of red wine was poor, I know it is a fish restaurant but it could do with a review. Finally I will definitely visit again, I would ask for an upstairs booking as the entrance and bar / waiting area is lovely but downstairs dining was very hot.

My wife and I dined at Fishy Fishy last week during our week long holiday in Kinsale. We had heard so much about it, through word of mouth, they must have a great PR Manager! Anyway we weren't disappointed. I had the smoked salmon for starters along with deep fried haddock for mains. My wife had fish cakes and Trout for mains. Food was fresh, very nicely done and presented well. Overall very good choice with atmosphere nice outside. The downside was the quality of the service. The waiting staff lack a bit of finesse with regards service. Don't get me wrong they were probably rushed off their feet and I wasn't expecting silver service but their attention to service didn't really match the restaurants quality. Also the wine was already opened before it was brought to the table - a pet hate of mine! Having said that I would recommend Fishy Fishy and I will return! PS. watch out for the cats!

Just have to eat at Fishy Fishy when you are in Kinsale, whether what the fuss about. So walked in for lunch bank holiday Monday. Unusual quiet initially, seated quickly, no reservation needed. Order a seafood chowder as entree, main was a mixed seafood salad. A little bit apprehensive going for seafood on Monday, and traditionally not the best day in the week for seafood. Not bad, so this is the positive fuss about the restaurant, though my seafood chowder was bit salty, thus the above argument. Seafood salad was superb. The final damage was just 25e with a glass of white wine. Worth the visit, folks

consistently superb restaurant. 4 of us ate, went a bit mad (main course mussels, main course chilli seafood and chowder for starters, then scallops, turbot and two haddock for mains, then 2 desserts). Food all terrific, the turbot with a creamy fennel and deep fried capers was fantastic, the scallops were the best I have tasted, and the battered haddock was very clever (very light batter made with mineral water). Staff are welcoming and friendly, but professional as well, the room is gorgeous, and at about 8 for starters and 25 for mains the prices are good, given the quality. I rate this as one of the best restaurants in Ireland, not too cheffy, but a guaranteed smile on my face every time. Love it.
