really like the bistro downstairs, food is tasty, its a bit small heard they are extending which would be great as if you are stuck at a table beside the door can be cold with people coming and going. Lovely curry and deserts are yum. Service good but something can be a bit snobby if you are not a regular drinking lots of posh wine. worth a visit if in greystones but you need to book

Myself and my partner love it here! We have never had a bad meal, We always eat downstairs in the Bistro and usually order garlic Mushrooms (even if they are not on the menu or specials board, the chef has made them for me, they must be on the restaurant Menu). we usually opt for the Steak which comes with Onions and Chips, with pepper sauce on the side. The Steak is always tender and juicy. I have been here on work nights out / birthdays / girls nights out / special occasions... it has always been great food!

Great experience at the Hungry Monk, the service is great, the food is delicious and the wine list is fantastic. The one downside for me was that all the desserts were brought to the table were served fully cold, I would have preferred sticky toffee pudding and apple tart both with ice-cream to be served warm :(

Ate there with a party of four on Friday last. Staff were very friendly and at times entertaining. Good varied menu with plenty of 'game' options which I particularly like. Interesting wine list with prices to suit all. The food was very good and priced just about right. Overall a very enjoyable meal and we will be back.

I ate at this restaurant last night having heard very positive things. Unfortunately, I was let down on a few points. The menu is extremely limited for coeliacs and I found our waiter wasn't the most accommodating person when I mentioned my dietary requirements. I had the chicken satay for stater which was great. Really tasty and it was a good sized portion. I opted for a steak for my mains which was mediocre at best. The meat was very fatty and chewy. The chips which came with it were oily and soggy. I was assured by my dining companion that the food is normally much better but I don't think I would return.

Ate here last week with boyfriend, food was lovely. had the chicken satay for starter, which was really good, and steak for mains. Steak was cooked nicely, but was a bit fatty. boyfriend had steak too. shared the chocolate fondant for desert, which was really nice. The only downside was the maitre d on the night, very loud for the whole evening greeting and talking to people as they arrived, but overall good. would go again.

We popped into the Hungry Monk for Sunday lunch at relatively short notice. The goats cheese starter was great and my husband's Lamb kidney's starter was very tasty also. We both ordered the lemon sole goujons for our mains and they were tasty but nothing amazing. The accompanying fries and tartare sauce were great. Service was very friendly and efficient. I'm not disappointed as such but for some reason I was expecting more. I would go back.

I enjoyed an excellent meal here with girlfriends - the service was very good. The goats cheese starter was very generous and extremely tasty. The pate was also very good and plentiful. The curry was delicious and cooked to perfection, the lemon sole was tasty and had just the right amount. The chocolate pudding for dessert was fabulous.. and there was no problem getting a candle in it for one of the girls as a birthday celebration. The atmosphere was lovely, and we were left as long as we liked to enjoy the evening without being rushed .. thoroughly enjoyable and I will definitely be back.

Went to the Restaurant upstairs for their value menu. Its was great. We found the easiest way to book was through menupages as left messages and never got a call back. I had the parfait to start and hubby at goats cheese both big portions, neither of us could finish. Mains, venison and steak, nothing fancy but perfectly done. Very enjoyable. We both had chocolate tarte for dessert! Fabulous. Good value for money, both were stuffed going home and enjoyed the meal. Will be back.

Went here with some girlfriends to the Bistro on Friday night. Lovely atmosphere, very relaxed. Food was excellent - I had smoked salmon to start - very large portion. Most of my friends had the spare ribs, which went down well. For mains, I had the shepardless pie - which was a lovely veggie dish. My friends had steak or duck and everyone was pleased, especially when the bill came - very reasonable considering!

( hungry monk wine bar )i used to love going here with my husband as a little treat but the last two times ive been (the other one in november) on a sunday, some thing just wasnt right the 1st thing was that the burger which they have always been quite famous for was bulked up with flour and herbs and was very doughy not the good plain seasoned one it was before and that was on both occasions! also the same waitress was wearing a tracksuit top white the first time and a black one the second time i couldnt believe it especially when they have now started to put servce charge on the bill! on a plus the starters desserts wine and atmosphere was lovely just think you need to go back to the old burger recipe and remind the staff that going out is a treat and appearence is everything in resturants

We hadn't been to the Cafe Bar for ages but we were pleased to discover it still lives up to an excellent standard. The menu has some welcome changes and we couldn't fault anything we had. I ordered the cod and chips and the portion was huge, my husband ended up finishing it after his burger! The place was full as usual and the atmosphere was good. The service was very good too. I noticed they had a special christmas menu advertised on the window as we left, it looked like very good value for money. Can't wait to sample it. We won't leave it so long this time before heading back.

Had a delicious meal for my husband's birthday. We sat "downstairs" which is ground level. We both LOVED our meals. As a vegetarian, the Shepardess Pie was unusual and outstanding. My husband had a fantastic steak. My daughter demolished her chicken and chips like I've never seen. The atmosphere was lovely. THE SERVICE WAS ABOVE AND BEYOND FANTASTIC. My only complaint - incessant Michael Buble which was on the entire meal, mix it up a bit! We can't wait to go back!

We decided to go to the restaurant upstairs for my wife's birthday. The atmosphere here is always great, warm and cosy with the candles and decor. We were made feel very welcome on arrival which is always nice. My wife had a Fillet steak which she said was perfectly cooked and really tender. I had their fishpie which was also great, big chunks of fish that you could tell were really fresh. We both had Sticky Toffee puds which were divine!! We were recommended a bottle of Red wine which was on Special, it was just ok but was only 22euro. All in all a great night and will be back soon..

This is one of the best restaurants and it is great to have it on your doorstep - but worth travelling. In our party of three - two of us local, one driving home 140 miles very satisfied! The lambs kidney dijonaisse were the first thing I ever had at Hungry Monk and I often return to this favourite - highly recommended if you eat kidneys or might eat kidneys! The other two had the wonderful Clonakilty Black Pudding and if there is anything to be unhappy about - four pieces is too much of a good thing. The breads were fabulous before all these. All three of us had different mains, our host had fillet steak which was a special and he delcared the best steak he's had in a long while. Belly of pork and lamb shank were also excellent and a side of the block cut chips were added. The desserts we sampled were sticky toffee pudding, chocolate tart and the sorbets and everything was beautifully presented and excellent quality. The staff are lovely, the atmosphere nice with candlestands and fun decor, We left entirely satisfied with others awaiting our table. Deservedly busy and popular and well worth the visit.

I have been back here a few times and as always the food is amazing. I love the atmosphere the service is second to none and the food is sublime. The restauarant has character and the candle light sets the mood for a lovely evening. The set menu is €28 I had the Calamari which was cooked to prefection and this is a hard thing to achieve and for mains I had the lemon sole which again was amazing. I will be back again

I visited here for the first time and was not disappointed. A lovely clonakilty black pudding starter followed by a perfectly cooked cod in batter and chips. I also enjoyed a lovely 1/2 bottle of chablis.

received a fantastic welcome from the manager downstairs and the restaurant was packed so we had to eat upstairs. The decor is fantastic and the staff are really friendly. Had lambs liver to start was ok but not something i'd order again. main course was game pie, thought it was quite bland and lacking in any serious substance, the desert of brownie was delightful.

Dined here with friends a few weeks ago and was very impressed. Staff are friendly, welcoming and highly efficient. The food was flawless. I had cod and can say it was the best seafood I have ever eaten. Everyone commented on how good the food was. The reastaurant has bags of charm and the atmosphere is great. Pretty expensive but worth it for a treat.

We have eaten here on a number of occasions and each time the food has been faultless, the service friendly and efficient and the atmosphere lively and cosy. We ate downstairs on Saturday night and the place was full as usual. The chicken satay to start was very tasty and the steak for my main course was cooked perfectly. Excellent value for money. Would recommend to anyone.

We called in on spec late Friday evening (22/01/10), and they immediately gave us a warm welcome. Food was excellent, and with the prices having dropped substantially since we went last, made the food excellent value for money. Every mouthful was delicious, perfectly cooked and there was a great variety to choose from. The wine list is as extensive as ever, and our choices whilst not the cheapest, would be repeated next time. The only downside was the taxi which was "coming in 5 minutes", took about 15 to come from booking time. Wouldn't have been a problem, but we'd gone outside and nearly froze! We'll be going back soon, and bringing friends with us. Thanks for a great night out.

I've eaten in the bar downstairs on a number of occasions with my husband, and we are never dissatisfied! I would highly recommend this restaurant for it's old-world charm, cosey, friendly atmosphere, & not to mention good tasty home-cooked cuisine and a fine wine list! However it doesn't come in cheap, with a meal for two midweek with maincourses & starters each & two glasses of wine coming to a rather pricey 66€. In saying that, we still go back, so it must be worth it!

I went to the Hungry Monk with a friend for dinner and we ate upstairs. I've been here several times and have always had a good experience. The wine list is good and I've never been disappointed. The food however is a bit of a different story. I had a duck starter that was very good followed by the cod that was on the specials list. It was good but just OK for the cost. We did not have dessert but I had coffee afterwards that was good.

The Hungry Monk downstairs is not about choice. The wine list is limited. The menu is limited in range and they have packed in as many chairs as possible. Bums on seats equals money in the till I suppose. These guys are trying to create a bistro type ambiance an I suppose it succeeds to an extent. We sat next to a family who had brought their young child with them. I don't mind this if they are trying to introduce the kid to the exprience of dining out but this kid just played on his bloody PSP the whole evening. I could have coped with this if he had turned the music off. The parents didnt look like the types who would have taken kindly to been asked to deal with it. we both had the lamb burger and a satay/samosa starter. couldn't find fault with the food. nothing amazing though the minced lamb was absolutely excellent. Wine was average at 35 euros. The staff were quite varied. The waiter was excellent, however his counterpart was bordering on rude. I was relieved that her delivering the food was no problem for her. Was glad for her that bringing a glass of water was no problem for her and I was not amused at having 10% service charge automatically added to my bill. I usually ask for this to be removed but as it was a birthday night out I didnt want to make things uncomfortable..I will next time.. But sadly I dont think Ill bother going again. 85euro for 2 burgers and a bottle of wine.. too much.

I love this buzy little place and we have been a few times now. The menu is quite short but does seem to have a little of most things. Service is good and quite quick. it is often hard to get a table so you do need to try to book or get in early particularily at weekends. For the first time my main course wasn't great, it was the stir fry and it was so spicy i couldn't taste it. Disappointing but did not ruin the evening as its a night out with a good atmosphere.

This well established restaurant in Greystones operates out of upstairs par of the building but a bistro/wine bar also operates on the ground floor with more limited choices but equally good food. We went to the upstairs part and chose from an extensive menu, My wife had a lovely fish dish while I had the duck. The meal was of a very high standard and the atmosphere in the place wass great - a real buzz that night. somewhat expensive but the Hungry Monk combines excellent pleasant service, wonderful food, and a huge wine list. I guess for a less costly night out go to the bistro

I ate downstairs here for the first time. Not a great choice for the pescatarion as the only fish on offer was battered cod. I opted for the veggie lasagna which was good. Mushrooms to start were good too. Wasn't blown away by the food though.

We ate upstairs in the monk on thursday night and had an excellent meal. Although it is quite pricey the quality of food is outstanding. I had a delicious tomato and mozzerella salad to start which was by far the nicest one I've ever had. My boyfriend had the lambs kidneys which were also very good. We both had the pork belly for main course which was gorgeous, as were the various accompanying vegetables. Creme brulee was the perfect finish to the meal which was washed down with a lovely bottle of red. The restaurant was buzzing so there was a good atmosphere and they were very accomodating when I said I was allergic to wheat. Would definately return again for a special occassion.

The Hungry Monk Wine Bar is great! I have eaten here many times and they have never failed to impress me. The staff are really friendly and accomodating. The small wine bar is cosy and relaxed. Most importantly the food is excellent and reasonably priced. More often than not I go for the steak which is always bursting with flavour and cooked to perfection. The wine list is outstanding here, you pay standard restaurant prices but at least you can be assured that you are getting the benefit of a well selected range!

The hungry Monk never fails to deliver!! There was a group of us here for dinner and I have to say the food was top class. We got recommendations for both the food and wine and we were thoroughly satisfied on both accounts. I had the scallops to start, the rump of wicklow lamb (DIVINE!!) and a durrty chocolate souffle to finish....mmmmmmm...am hungry now just thinking of it...can't fault a thing and neither could my colleagues except that the night ended too quickly! Ah well we'll just have to go back for more very soon....10 out of 10!!

My wife and I dined in the Wine Bar recently and were very disappointed with the food. Soggy batter on the fish, flaccid undercooked jacket chips,an overcooked steak-ordered medium rare-cooked well done, a standrad fruit salad dressed up as a knickerbocker glory, and a cheese board that had 2 portions of the same cheese, all for €90....way overpriced for what we had. The wine bar interior is quite nice, and the informal service was fine, but having read all the reviews of how good the food is, I have to say from our experience, the Hungry Monk was one of the poorest venues we have been to. Will not be rushing back.

Had lunch in the Hungry Monk winebar on Mothers day. The food was amazing, the menu was small but there was something for everyone. We were a group of 4, everyone had something different and each dish was delicious. The staff were very friendly although a little slow that said it was mothers day lunch so very busy and the food was well worth the wait. Considering the quality, the price was extremely reasonable about €12-€15 for a main. The wine bar is very well appointed and quite intimate without being cramped. The music was a little loud and the CD was on a repeat cycle but again it was very busy so staff possibly didn't have time to change it. They were using a mobile phone to manage bookings which was ringing a lot! considering it was in one of teh waiters pockets perhaps vibrate would have been a better option. However the food and value is so good, I would over look all the minor faults. Great place, well worth a visit.

We hadn't been here in a while, but all was still as good as ever. Had the black pudding and goats cheese as starters- both fabulous, steak and the lamb burger for mains- excellent. Beautiful half bottle of wine also. Lovely seasonal specials available, staff here are professional and relaxed, everyone coming in knew them by name so obviously lots of return custom here. It was a freezing winters night out (side door used instead) but it was so cosy in this restaurant, I just love it!

We wanted to eat at the restaurant but it was full so we got a table in the bistro downstairs. The atmosphere is perfect for christmas, all dark wood and gothic candles. Boyf had a goatscheese tartlet and a steak and I had the butternut squash soup with lovely bread and the lemon sole with a really good tartare sauce. The wine choice was pretty good and there was a good variety of half bottles so I could have white and boyf could have red. We split a cheese platter of wicklow blue cheese (pity it was all the same cheese) The staff were very good but rushed off their feet. All in all we had a really nice night. Little things like port calvados and coffee were pretty expensive but the food was good value. If you can, try not to be seated at the table by the door...tall bar stools and not much leg room. We will definitely be returning Make sure you check out the toilets' gregorian music.

Lovely restaurant, great atmosphere. The owner is quite amusing, it's almost more like a hobby than a business. Great food, we ate from the bistro menu in the downstairs part on a Sunday night. Having arrived on time out table was not ready and we had to wait lurking by the door almost on top of another couple who were eating. Felt a little uncomfortable. We did have the menus to look at while we waited and so were ready to order when we sat. The starters list I found didn't have anything which really enticed me. There was however so many items on the mains which I would have loved. I opted for the fish and chips and my husband for the Steak. Both cooked perfectly, beautiful. Service was OK, friendly but maybe lax at times. Overall though we really enjoyed our dinner.

One of the best restaurants i've eaten in. The bistro has great priced and very tasty light diners and the food upstairs is of the highest quality. I had the nicest T-bone steak (26 oz) and the best piece of duck (in a plum sauce) I have ever eaten. Huge wine list with decent cheaper options and outstanding pricier options. The service is very good and the atmosphere is how a restaurant should be in my opinion.

Went with a group of six to the restaurant upstairs (have been in both bistro and restaurant many time). Nice greeting (bordering on a little bit false?) and seated immediately. Menu has not changed dramatically over the 10 years I have been going and whilst the food is excellent, I do think the prices are getting very strong. I had prawn pil pil to start which I think might have been €16 or €18 (it was a long night, can't remember exactly!!) which is very pricey by any one's standards. I had the pork for mains which I found very disappointing, especially in presentation, it was shaped into a large sausage and I think may have been boiled/poached as it was grey in colour, very unappetising looking. Wine selection as always excellent but again you are paying for it. I won't be rushing back to the restaurant but if I was in the area I'd go to the bistro.

Visited the Hungry Monk with a group of four friends. We ate in the upstairs restaurant, apparently downstairs is more of a bistro. Upon arrival we were seated immediately by a very cheerful and friendly waiter. The menu, whilst not extensive, had something for everyone although we all had steaks with the exception of our vegetarian friend. For a starter I had the Prawns Pil-Pil which came served in a sizzling pot with garlic and chillis. The prawns were fantastic and the garlic and chilli sauce was so tasty I ended up mopping it up with the tasty tomato bread that they served before the starters arrived. For the main course I chose the fillet steak with a pepper sauce. I requested it medium and it arrived piping hot and cooked to perfection. We ordered a selection of side orders although we really shouldn't have bothered as each main course came with either a selection of vegetables or some very tasty onion rings. The dessert selection was slightly disappointing and as a result we chose to skip the course completely. When it came to drinks I didn't stray from water where as the others all went for a German beer that was recommended by the waiter which they all enjoyed. Overall our meal was excellent, the restaurant itself is very busy and the walls are covered in photos and funny paintings depicting Monks in a variety of compromising situations! Parking is a bit of an issue so if you are driving you may want to bring an umbrella as it could be a long walk to the restaurant.

i've eaten in the bistro on numerous occasions with both family and friends and I have to say and each time we've gone we've thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The menu, while relatively short is great and pretty much everything is very tasty and good value - I especially like the fish and chips! umm! great atmosphere too, with the dark panelling and low lighting.

Ate in the bistro downstairs with a couple of friends. It is lovely and cosy with a nice atmosphere. We just had main courses and two of us went for burgers and one went for the chicken curry. All the food was very tasty. Just finished off with hot chocolates. Would like to return to the restaurant upstairs some day. Would recommend the bistro.

First time to dine in the Bistro downstairs. Good quality food - had lambs kidneys followed by scampi plus dessert and bottle of wine between 4. Bill came to 45 euro per head. Quaint, cosy ambiance in the Bistro. Friendly, efficient service with no feeling of being rushed although we ate at 7 and had to finish by 9. Would return.

I read the rave reviews and we decided to treat ourselves over Easter. We loved our day in Greystones which is a truly beautiful village. The decor and atmosphere is fun and interesting. Our food was average, meat dishes over cooked and desserts nothing to write home about.

My hunger was more than satisfied by our meal at the Hungry Monk. We dined early in the wine bar downstairs and while it can either be a high stool at the window table or a very low stool beside the door to the kitchen if you get a seat grab it for I dont think you will be disappointed with your food. I had the kidneys for starters which were top drawer and the deep fried cod for my main course was crispy yet maintained its moistness inside, my wife opted for the steak which was cooked to perfection and was very good. There were two staff working and they dealt with the service quickly and in a friendly manner. A lot of new eateries are opening up in Greystones but this restaurant has been part of the village for a long time and I am sure it will continue to hold its own among the newbies. I look forward to going back to dine upstairs to try there larger dinner menu.

Been to the Hungry Monk several times, always eaten upstairs and every time the food has been outstanding. There is a great selection of fish dishes esp. the specials. The lunch menu is also great value for money; €30 plus 10% service for a starter main course and dessert. Staff are extremely friendly and every time we visit we thoroughly enjoy it!

Didn't make a booking but walked in on a Sunday evening and we were offered the stools and barrel table next to the window. The service was very attentive and friendly. I had the burger with cheese which was ok. Wife had cod and chips which was good and mum had the curry which was good. Great decor. The other clientele appear to be older couples or men on there own.

On good reviews from MenuPages.ie and also friends, I decided to try this restaurant. The whole way through the night I could not fault anything about the food, service or general atmosphere. (I would recommend the T-bone steak, looks absolutely gorgeous, I’m only annoyed I didn’t order it.) The one issue I would have however is the 10% service charge. it was a meal for 2, is there any other restaurant that has a service charge on a table for 2? At the end of the day, if the service and food was worth it, the value will be seen based on the tip that is left and also the same customers returning and general good word of mouth. now due to me being told I had to pay a 10% service charge (would have left more but based on this I didn’t leave any additional tip) this is the main thing I remember and also one of the first things I mention to people when asked about this beautiful restaurant.

Now here's a restaurant that never gets it wrong!. No matter when we go and how big our small our group is the Hungry Monk never fails to deliver. The food is always excellent, great wine list, and friendly efficient but unobtrusive service. You never feel rushed and always the right amount of time is left between courses. Consistently good and obvious that the owner takes pride in his restaurant and cares for his patrons.

I have eaten downstairs on a number of occasions - upstairs for a more special occasion!! The atmosphere is fantastic and service cannot be faulted any way!! Food upstairs was melt in the mounth especially my partner's sea bass which I managed to eat most of. Downstairs more casual but the staff genuine and friendly. The extensive wine list is awesome!! Definitely one of Greystone's treasures!!!

I have only eaten in the downstairs in the Monk. Problem is - when they refused take bookings I turned up on a couple of occasions and couldnt get a table. Then when I turned up EARLY about 3 months ago they were booked out (Now they take bookings). It's obviously a very popular spot and I would agree that the food and atmosphere is excellent. They could make a fortune franchising this Hungry Monk theme.

Was lucky enough to get a table at The Hungry Monk without booking ahead but only as it was 5pm on a wet Saturday afternoon. We ate in the bistro and have to say that for four people to walk away fed and well watered for less than E30.00 each aided my digestion! The mussels were almost too plump and a little dry (as breaded) but the succulence of the burger, which followed, made up for that. The kidneys stole the show, the steak was average but I've had worse for a lot more. Overall, we were impressed - value for money is a rare enough experience in Irish dining these days.

This was our second time in the Hungry Monk. We were upstairs in the restaurant. I must say this place has really gone down hill. The menu was very poor and not much choice. The waiter was loud and over familiar. My steak was nothing special and not worth the money paid. We wont be going back anytime soon.

My partner and I have been fairly regular visitors to The Hungry Monk over the last 10 years ago and have always been delighted with the food, ambience and service. There have been subtle changes, however, and not for the better. Service has always been top notch but I must admit I was taken aback recently when the blonde waitress in the Wine Bar came to our table and asked "Whadda yiz havin'?". That being said, our meal was lovely. The ladies toilets need a little attention also. Upstairs, the ambience is fantastic, and the manageress attends to your every need with courtesy and professionalism.

This is a tricky one.... I have eaten in The Hungry Monk on many, many occasions over the years, and I truly feel it has lost 'something' recently.... but I can't put my finger on it. As other reviewers have stressed, Greystones is a lovely little town in North Wicklow, but it appears there is a clique of regulars that frequent the Monk at the weekends. The knock-on effect is that the staff and manager tend to invest more time in providing tableside service to the 'regulars' as opposed to the infrequent diner. The current (upstairs) dinner menu (May 2007) is quite limited, and surprisingly, is presented laminated in plastic, in A3 format, giving the overall impression of a cheap and cheerful bistro. This doesn't suit the magnificent, olde-worlde ambience of the dining room. The food is good, but dinner for two (with wine) and perhaps an aperitif and/or post dinner drink will set you back €150-€200 (if you are to include service charge). Myself and my wife dined there recently, and ordered an Irish coffee (for her) and a brandy for myself after our meal (and after we had paid the bill)...The Irish coffee looked liked Guinness that hadn't settled (i.e. the cream had sunk) and my brandy was bog-standard Hennessy. The price for these 2 drinks - €21. I'm sorry, but this is over the top. I may appear to be slating The Hungry Monk, but the jury is still out, as far as I'm concerned. I'm going to re-visit this establishment over the coming month or two, and I hope I will be in a position to write a better review. One very good point - their Sunday lunch is served all afternoon on Sundays. Downstairs is a less formal wine bar/bistro that I haven't yet eaten in.

The formal restaurant upstairs serves very good seafood, although they could do with a more up-to-date makeover of the interior. Downstairs the wine bar is intimate and informal, with good service and good food. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Greystones.

My favourite restaurant! the atmosphere here is always wonderful and you can either go upstairs for a more formal dinner or stay downstairs in the more relaxed bistro. Excellent food, personally love the steak, and have never had a bad experience here. The staff couldn't be more welcoming and friendly and to top it off it’s really really reasonably priced.

Greystone is a pretty little town and this place is def a place to go and eat if you are there, my friends love it, and really it’s the atmosphere that makes it so nice. The food is good sound food to have in a rainy day, the place is cosy decorated with warm wintery colours and has red as main colour. Staff was nice and attentive, had to wait a bit for our food but overall nice.
