Hard Rock Cafe

Hard Rock Cafe

Posted on 22 February 2009
We took 3 visiting teenagers to Hard Rock cafe last Friday night. I was mistaken in my thinking that this would be 'cool' experience for them. This place is sad & dated, it appears to be aimed at people still stuck in the 1980s. As for the food - it was incredibly disappointing: I had to hunt for the chicken in my chicken salad.

Les Freres Jacques

Les Freres Jacques

It was perfect for our valentine's celebration... the room was intimate, service impeccable and the food was memborable. I loved my black sole and the chocolate fondant, even the petits four were splendid. There is obvious team work in this establishment: when our desired claret was not available in the listed year alternatives were proferred, in addition we were given complementary pudding wine and even the owner came to offer his personal apologies. With this kind of attention, Freres Jacques is the kind of place where you wish you could afford to be a regular.

Three of us stopped for a late lunch - we all enjoyed the Duck Confit; served with perfectly cooked Rosti, Beetroot and Asparagus. At 15 euro this is well priced accomplished cooking. We were conscious that we were the last to leave, yet the staff went out of their way to make us feel at home and to take our time. With delicious, high quality food that is keenly priced, coupled with warm service and a wide selection of wines by the glass - this is a winner.

One Pico Restaurant

One Pico Restaurant

Posted on 05 February 2009
If ladies are to do lunch, then this is the perfect place. Four of us took up the lunch 3 course 19.95 offer. One Pico was buzzing at 2pm on a Wednesday... and all expectations were exceeded. Largely because One Pico, given the inexpensive set menu option, chose not to skimp on any element of the restaurant experience: we were offered bread options (at no charge), the menu presented a multitude of fine choices (no simple dishes in sight). All in all, it was an overwhelmingly satisfying experience. I'm left contemplating who I can take to One Pico next.

If you like classic french cooking in an informal environment - then this place is for you. I adored the 'Rib of beef for two' it was prefectly presented and melt-in-the mouth delicious. The bread was rustic and fresh. We shared the Chocolate Fondant, and it was so good we were almost fighting over it. The only let down was the starter of mussels, which though plentiful, were slightly overcooked. Service was informal but assured. We also liked the two jazz musicians; playing the tunes we would listen to at home.

We were forced to ask 'Is the chef away?' when limp vegetables accompanying overcooked dry lamb turned up at the table. The service staff redeemed themselves by offering complementary champagne. Highlight of the meal was the selection of freshly baked breads. But alas the breads and good service could not make up for the obvious culinary faux pas.

Chez Max

Chez Max

Posted on 13 January 2009
You could easily forget you were in Dublin... the atmosphere, food, staff and fellow diners felt very french. Three of us popped in for a late lunch, we shared a large platter of meat and cheese. The waitress topped up our breads and this was happily consumed with Chez Max's quaffable french wine. Very nice indeed.

Loved the relaxed atmosphere in this Dublin institution. Definitely a place where you would be happy to dine alone. Their signature cinnamon buns are available from midday and are something special.

Jaipur Restaurant (Malahide)

Can't fault the food or the service, however the high prices suggest a 'dining experience' and the decor really lets the side down. I hate to say it- but it looks like a cheap indian restaurant. Would not take anyone here to impress.

Big improvement from before. The food has always been good and the view is arguably the best in Malahide. Now with a smarter interior and a thoughtful wine list this restaurant is now better placed for the full range of dining experiences; since our romantic dinner for two, my partner has returned with work colleagues. Keep up the good work!

The Pig's Ear

The Pig's Ear

This is a little nugget of a restaurant offering good value accomplished traditional cooking. All four of us were delighted with the food. My pork belly main was sumptious and the chocolate dessert was decadent. The atmosphere was better than the photos on menupages suggest; smart and thoughtful without being formal. Terrific choice of wines by the glass - which enabled us to hold an improptu blind tasting session. And the service was exceptional. Can see us going back again and again - whether it's a romantic meal for two, business dinner, or with family and friends.

Seabank Bistro

Seabank Bistro

Posted on 03 October 2008
Against the odds Seabank is a star. It suffers from unfortunate architecture and unfortunate location (next to a Spar) which equals zero street appeal. Yet Seabank delivers consistently excellent food coupled with exceptional service. I love their Fish and Chips, the fish is always of the delectable 'melt in the mouth' mode. My other half swears that Seabank's steak is the best in Malahide. Seabank is expensive; locals come here with families as an occasion restaurant - on any night the staff might be singing 'happy birthday' more than once. One small gripe... given Seabank's prices, I would expect to find more wines offered by the glass (it has a very limited & unsophisticated selection).

Giovanni’s Pizzeria Restaurant

Ventured in here for a late Sunday lunch. The restaurant was already busy with mostly family groups. Whilst the simple decor will not win any awards, the food is good and there seems to be real ownership of the output here. I ordered the Seafood risotto, which was tasty. My partner ordered Pizza, which was plentiful, thus served on an enlarged plate. Only one offering of Red wine by the glass, and it was good (ended up having two!). The profiteroles were delicious. Feeling very content I was in no hurry to leave. A comfortable environment to enjoy relaxed food with family or friends.

Chez Sara Wine Bar

Chez Sara Wine Bar

Posted on 13 September 2008
This was our second visit. I love Chez Sara's intimate informal atmosphere and whilst the food was 'so-so' on our first visit, I was keen to return. On this return trip the lamb shank enjoyed by two of us was tender, but under seasoned for my liking. I partook in their chocolate fondant dessert - and it was fine. Not so good was the waitress who was sulky/stroppy (perhaps unwell) - when we asked for after dinner coffees, she said that there was none! Clearly she wanted to go home. In addition, my music sensitive fellow diners noticed the cd repeated three times during our meal. Not a place to impress, but cosy and intimate for close friends and deep discussions.

Avoca Cafe (Suffolk Street)

Avoca Cafe (Suffolk Street)

Posted on 13 September 2008
A delicious aroma of freshly baked goods greeted us we entered the Avoca store. The coffee was excellent, and complementary top ups were offered by our super waiter. All the food is beautifully presented, however I felt slightly aggrieved that the carrot cake had a lemon butter icing and not an authentic cream cheese icing. I'll be back to enjoy more of their coffee and sample more of their creations.

Shared a platter of cheeses and meats in the Cellar with friends. Loved the informal rustic atmosphere, quality of food and good service. Notably, the selection of wines by the glass is the best I've come across in Dublin.

Oscar Taylor Restaurant

Oscar Taylor Restaurant

Posted on 08 September 2008
It was our first time to Oscar Taylors. We were not expecting fine dining but simple food well executed. The upstairs restaurant whilst busy is not our taste: decorated in greens and burgundy - seems a bit garish. The large size makes it feel more like a food hall rather than a restaurant. Given our dislike of the fit out we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The venison was tasty and perfectly medium, while my Monk fish goujons were perfectly fine. Similarly, service was prompt and professional. Most couples dining were in the 60+ age bracket - next time we'll bring our parents.

Dunne And Crescenzi (South Frederick Street)

Dunne And Crescenzi (South Frederick Street)

Popped into D&C with a friend for a late afternoon glass of wine and bite to eat. My initial impressions were good: it had a relaxed rustic atmosphere with a clear focus on wine (given the many bottles lining every wall). Thus I was disappointed that there were only 5 reds available by the glass and then frustrated that the waitress didn't know anything about them. We shared a platter of cold meats; I would not be surprised if the meat came out of supermarket packets! Not the rustic, authentic deli taste or presentation I was expecting. Overall the experience was alright. I would visit again, the location is great... and to share a bottle of wine with friends, but give the food a miss.

The Cake Cafe

The Cake Cafe

Posted on 28 August 2008
I love the cakes at the Cake Cafe: their Chocolate Brownies and Lemon cake are to die for (or at least make a special trip for). On my recent visit I took a visitor from London and I became aware of how untidy the place was. The pictures were askew, tables not cleaned, old straws found at the back of chairs... in addition, with only 3 tables of customers, it took 20 minutes to get our cake & coffee. Yet I'll still return for the food!

Kajjal

Kajjal

Kajjal has it all: great service and food in a designer space. Since arriving in Malahide from London, this has become our favourite dining spot; we eat here up to twice a week! I would recommend the seafood platter (for 2) and the Palak Gosht. You can come here with friends and also for an intimate evening.

Ivans Oyster Bar & Grill

Ivans Oyster Bar & Grill

Posted on 28 August 2008
Three of us enjoyed a late Sunday lunch at Ivans. I entered hesitantly given a lack of positive reviews on Menupages. However I was delightfully impressed by my experience and look forward to returning. Loved the fresh breads served in retro colanders. My friends were both pleased with their Oyster starters. We then dined on Fish and Chips, Seafood Pie and a special 'Halibut with parsley & caper crust': all were cooked perfectly. We learnt that Ivans has a new chef which might explain the improvement in food. Only issue was our waiter, who whilst well intentioned was forgetful - however any mishap in service was promptly recovered by an efficient Maitre'd. Recommend it for lunch/evening with friends, it's slightly too noisy for an intimate evening.

Bon Appetit Brasserie

Bon Appetit Brasserie

We eat in Cafe Bon (downstairs) regularly as the food is consistent and the prices represent good value. Yesterday's three-course Sunday lunch was no exception. The Beef Capaccio was our table's favourite starter - flavoursome paper thin slices of beef that melted in the mouth. My roasted pork fillet was perfectly moist and beautifully presented. Desserts were also popular, though the warm chocolate sponge could benefit from an additonal dollop of icecream. Least I forget the breads - a selection of fresh breads is always offered.
