Roly's Bistro

Roly's Bistro

Posted on 23 July 2010
I wrote an email of complait as follows, of course I didn't get a response!I had lunch in your restaurant yesterday booked under Flood for 11 people @ 2.45. I have to say, it was the worst lunch I have had in Roly's ever, and the service was rude to say the least! I didn't enjoy my meal, as I felt we were an inconvenience to you, an annoyance, and to be gotten out as soon as possible. I'm aware you had dinner sittings at 6pm, and we had booked our table for 2.45 which should have being sufficient time, but to hoover around our feet was the height of rudeness. We ate as fast as we possibly could, but it was at least 20/30 minutes before our orders were taken, despite us being ready to order almost immediately. This delay was on your side, not ours. I acknowledge we were running late and only sat at 3, but it was your serving team's prerogative to serve us promptly. In addition to this, we were cramped onto a table that was a squeeze for 10 people, never mind 11. One waitress kept serving my colleague to my right via my face, in that despite the fact we were both sitting on the outside of the table, and she could have served him from his left or right, she served both the main course, dessert and coffee by putting her hand in front of my face and dropping the plates down. For an establishment that is supposed to have a fine dining reputation, I saw none of this in effect yesterday. Due to being in a work group I didn't want to cause a fuss in front of everyone at the time, but my colleague also commented that the waitress kept trying to take the nose of me. And the staff kept trying to clear the table even though people had not finished eating. To top it all, when we were 'politely' told dinner was starting, could we leave please, one member of our party hadn't yet received her Irish Coffee which she had ordered when the rest of us had ordered dessert. She then had to knock it back as we had finished our desserts, were being hoovered out of the place.

We've eaten here a LOT in the last 2 years, especially for family occasions and loved it. This time I don't know whether they were having a BAD night or it has gone down hill but the food was TERRIBLE. It is expensive when you consider you have to pay for your sides, but usually the quality is there. Not this time! I ordered the ribs and rack of lamb Medium Rare. I got fatty fatty ribs with no meat on them and a obviously cooked and re-heated well done rack of lamb. You could see it was all dry on the outside from sitting under a light. The vegetables were microwaved and all crinkled at the edges. I sent it back and asked for steak which was OK and non-microwaved veg (of which I was told there was none!). My partner had the Duck which looked pre-cooked and heated and was dry, dry, dry. He ate it cause he was too hungry, but I refuse to eat and over-apy for seriously sub standard food. Both mains were accompanied by stuffed mash which turned out to be a mix of mash and stuffing, should never be tried. I really hope it was a bad night, as we loved this place. But I am reluctant to go there again!

22 of us went here for a family celebration. The Early bird was on offer which 18 of us took up, most having the soup and the steak. I believe the soup was standard, grand. The steak was like a minute steak which had being flattened to make it fill the plate and was about a millimetre thick. This came with a small bowl of chips and nothing else. I was told it was tasteless and in all very bad value. I ordered the duck egg with asparagus salad. It was pleasant but the asparagus had being chopped into tiny pieces, overcooked and mixed in with the potatoes, it was a bit of a shame to do this. The main of claims with linguine was lacking in clams and instead of a white wine sauce more like a quart of cream poured over it, no flavour and no attempt at cooking really. I don't think we will be going back. Poor, poor, poor.

Went there yesterday evening for the Early Bird. It was FANTASTIC! Had the Tuna Carpaccio to start with, the Cod for the mains and a new and FABULOUS dessert, White Chocolate and Lime tart. The Tuna was delicate and melt in the mouth and I loved the spicy puree with came with. The Cod was perfect with a summer salad and new potatoes and a lovely tasty pesto. The dessert was a delight. The tart tangy but sweet with a vanilla cream and meringue. Service was excellent and it was a delight to eat there! Can't recommend it highly enough!

Went here for the Early Bird on a Monday, didn't realise the time and though it was 7.30, the manager was happy for us to still order off the early bird menu. I had the toulouse sausage starter, it was unusual in that I've never had bread and puree'd potatoes on the same plate, but it was pleasant. I went all out and had the sole meuinere for my main which had a surcharge. It was divine, heaven on a plate. The side of veg were crisp and tasty, I'd definitely go back!

Got there around 5.30 so was in time for the lunch special, €16.95 for 2 courses. The chicken wings were nice, but the chicken green curry was gorgeous! Always find this great value and one of the best Thai curries. Service was very slow, but it was exceptionally busy. A regular haunt for me.

I eat here regularly as I work in the area. The only reason I persist in returning is because there are so few places to eat on Parkgate St and the soup is usually good. Bar that, the service is what lets them down. I've being asked to move tables numerous times to fit more people in. It regularly takes 10/15 minutes to get menus and have your order taken. The food takes even longer to arrive. And a person who I can only assume is the owner stalks around barking, has brought my group to comment on numerous occasions that we felt like naughty school children. The menu options are quite limited at lunch, especially if you are wheat intolerant/coeliac. In that case it's soup or the goats cheese & beetroot salad. And don't dare ask for an extra slice of bread for your soup. That's €2 and when commenting that it used to be 75c, was promptly fired the reply that we had been undercharged previously. I usually go back to work in worse form that when I left it. You'd ask why I return, but again it's one of the few places to eat on the street.

If you go there, get the burgers. Be hungry though. They are huge and very, very good. Nice wine selection, good service, always busy. Great for a casual evening meal or to while away an afternoon.

Heard a lot about the seafood and thought their mussel starter was very tasty. I had one of the specials of the day, ray wing. First time having it and I loved it. Service was good, place was full and buzzing. Would go back for the fresh tasty seafood.

Went for the early bird, €55 for three courses. Which seems expensive, but when you factor in the steak is normally over €40 is great value. And what an experience. I've never tasted a steak so good in my life and fillet has never tasted the same since. Astounding. The cheese bread and chilli muffin smelled and looked too delicious to resist. The trio of smoked salmon was delightful and wow, the mash and onion strings with the steak were just heavenly. Had a lovely bottle of wine. Dessert wasn't for me, but that was insignificant after the unbelievable steak. Amazing dining experience.

I ADORE their betel leaf starter, just love the combination of flavours! Their curry is fab, service is excellent and cocktails delicious! Had the crab salad for a main, wasn't pushed on the fake crab stuff that was in the salad in addition to the real crab. But still return here again and again, it rarely disappoints.

Went here with a friend for the early bird. She loved her fried brie starter and the chicken main, I had the rabbit main and it was divine. Plenty of rabbit in a delicious sauce. I had a glass of Pic Poul for a change and the service was impeccable. Great value three course menu in a great restaurant!

a very large group of us ate here and bar a few discussions about being a little squashed into too few tables the night went without a hitch. The waitress we had was lovely, and served everything correctly. We tried almost everything on the menu, loved the paella. The seafood in a lobster sauce was a delight. Tasted the meatballs, delicious. Sangria was tasty and we were very full at the end. I don't agree with having to pay for baskets of bread, that grates with me, especially since we provided a nice big bill. I still love it though and definitely plan to go back!

This was my second visit with a group. I loved the tagine the first time so much came back with another group of friends. It was a different tagine though, full of salt and not much else. The starters in the early bird are not much to write home about. The stuffed squid tasteless and the chicken skewers average. For €19.90 fr 2 courses there's a lot better value out there. Won't be rushing back.

I was really looking forward to trying here, heard so much about it. The food was dreadful. We did the set menu ~ €25 for three courses. The spring rolls were average. The 2 small ribs were small and the sauce something out of a jar. The mains.... sweet and sour chicken was super sweet, no sour and full of MSG. The Sacha beef was supposed to be spicy, it was oily, salty, gloopy, beef was a weird jellyish consistency. The beef pepper was just about edible. Dessert was ice cream or profiteroles, not much to say. Millenium 2 takeaway just around the corner is far, far superior. Never again.

I had never eaten here before and was dying to try it. The two of us went for the early bird menu. The staff were attentative, and I thought the options were good. My partner had the cod/potato starter and enjoyed it, I know I don't think it would have being my cup of tea, but the venison pate was fabulous with a mouth watering plum compote. I had the cod on cassoulet and though it didn't look like anything special the flavours were to die for. The lemon parfait dessert was divine, I can still taste it. We got a tour of the kitchen on our way out and I had a fabulous evening there. Would definitely go back!

Heard from a foodie friend who had taken part of the Dine in Dublin week that this was the best value set menu in town, and he wasn't wrong. For €25, three fabulous courses in a beautiful dining room with great service were the order of the day. The crab brulee starter was delicious and different. The Hake main course was beautifully cooked and perched on lovely mashed sweet potato. I tried the quince dessert for something different and it was light and tasty. One of my companions had the pork fillet cooked MR and it was fabulous. I can't wait to go back!

I had being dying to try this place as a lover of seafood and it didn't disappoint. On a stormy night, four of us braved the elements to try it out. The service was impecable, there not being may diners meant we were exceptionally well looked after. They have a set menu for €28 for 2 courses or €35 for 3 courses. On the website this included lobster for an extra €10 which wasn't on the menu when we arrived. The manager had no qualms about offering us this, and we were delighted. I had the venison sausage and delicious scallops to start and a perfectly cooked and generous lobster for main with butter sauce, I was in heaven! For dessert three of us chose cheese and got a generous plate of 6 types of Irish cheese, gorgeous!. Petit fours were delightful and the house red tasty. A fabulous evening of fabulous food for a great price considering the quality. Heaven.

It's been a while since I've been there and forgot how dingy it is. That said the food is lovely and the early bird was good value. I had the beetroot and feta salad, yum and the seafood marinara. Wasn't overly pushed on the sauce, wasn't as tangy as I expected but still lovely. A good place to get nice food for a reasonable price.

Heard so much about this fabulous €19.95 lunch just had to try it and does it match the hype, oh yes. Fabulous fine dining for an amazing price with great service and a lovely ambience. I'd recommend it to anyone. I had the Smoked Haddock brulee starter, not smokey enough but delicious. The pheasant breast with amazing stuffing was a delight. I had petit fours for dessert, and was satisfied with the amount I had to eat. My dining partner had the crab risotto to start, delicious and the pheasant breast also. Dessert for him was the Walnut and Date Icecream with toffee doughnuts. Delectable.

I've been to Odessas many times in the past 10 years and this was definitely a disappointing. We went for the 16 euro early bird option. We both chose the calamari to start with, it was pleasant enough. The Mains weren't tasty at all though. I ordered the Duck Confit with Lentils. The lentils were heavy with a sauce, the duck leg wasn't tasty at all. The skin was soft rather than crispy so I had to remove the fat. My dining party ordered the fish pie which to me looked like a microwaved dish of mashed potatoes. His face said it all, tasteless and over cooked. There was a distinct sense of something missing with both of the mains, just your main really, you'd have to order a side to get some vegetables. I think the 'economic downturn' is no excuse to skrimp on quality, I won't be going back again.
