One Pico Restaurant

One Pico Restaurant

This was chosen for a birthday dinner and proved a real treat. We had the 39 Euro menu, which was the only thing we were offered so I was not sure if there was an a la carte option. Nonetheless it did not disappoint and the Seared Red Mullet starter and Duck Confit main were nothing short of delicious. Cheesecake and chocolate fondant finished off a really nicely balanced, tasty meal. Although the portions may not have appeared huge, the quality of the produce shone through and the richness of the food was perfectly filling. The surroundings were lovely and the staff attentive without being cloying. A very nice experience.

Kilkenny Restaurant & Cafe

Kilkenny Restaurant & Cafe

Who would have thought it was so hard to find somewhere to have a nice breakfast on a Saturday morning in Dublin at 10am? Most places offering breakfast/brunch are not open till 11am or later and while usually coffee and a bun is fine, I wanted a cafe with a wide selection and where I wasn't going to be hooshed out a millisecond after my last bite. The Kilkenny Cafe ended up fitting the bill perfectly. Great selection to suit pretty much all tastes, really good pancakes - 7 euros for panackes, fruit salad, maple syrup and a large cup of coffee - and pleasant service. The eating area was refreshingly bright and airy in contrast to so many poky cafes trying to squeeze in as many tables as possible. Very positive experience and I'll definitely be back the next time I have an 'early morning' brekkie date.

For something different to do, I found a special offer for entry to a night at the dogs and 3-course dinner & coffee for €29.99 per person. Not knowing what to expect in terms of the meal, I was really pleasantly surprised. For starters, my companion had a 'layer cake' of smoked salmon/cooked salmon/potato salad which was delicious, while I had a very nice Greek salad of sorts with grilled parma ham on top (yum!). The complimentary bread basket offered a lovely selection including an excellent black bread. For mains, steak, chicken and fish pie were available. I was very happy with my choice of sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce, as was my companion with his chicken wrapped in bacon and stuffed with savoy cabbage with a red wine gravy. On the side, plenty of veg, so no one was going to go hungry. So, good food all round, but what really made the experience stand out was that the staff were just excellent. They were attentive without fawning, cheery, witty and really made the night for us. Other restaurateurs in Dublin would do well to send their waiting staff to Dobbins to see how it should be done.

Surely this has to be one of the best Chinese restaurants in Dublin! The food is delicious, and I can genuinely vouch for that having tried half the items on the menu, the service is excellent, and although it may seem a bit pricy, if you live in the area, they deliver. Not only do they deliver, but the prices on their take-out/delivery menu are substantially lower unlike most Dublin restaurants who offer food to go. My current favourites on the starter menu are the Cantonese spring rolls and the squid which are both excellent, plus they do a mean crispy duck. Mains, the sweet and sour is sublime, Singapore noodles are ridiculously more-ish...so many top quality options to choose from, it can be hard to decide!

I tried Alfie's lunch menu, (pick 3 items to make up your lunch-box, soft drink included for €10), and was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was. The staff were very friendly, without being overbearing, and the food was delivered promptly, which, for me, is a prerequisite for lunch time eating. I ordered the chicken wrap, greek salad and fish cakes, all of which were very tasty, especially the salad, and my companion ordered the burger, chips and BLT polishing it all off happily. The portions are good and sparkling water was included as the soft drink - I fully expected to have to pay extra as is often the norm. As a lunch time option, particularly if you want to eat your main meal of the day then, this is a cost-conscious and tasty choice.

Utterly disappointing visit to what is touted to be one of the best burger restaurants in Dublin. The blaring music precluded any chance of having a conversation over the dry and bland burgers, which were, in any case, ridiculously over-priced. There seems to be a strange fad for these oversized, doughy rolls, (why not burger buns?!), with a disproportionately sized burger patty, some raw stuff thrown in and skewered to hold it all together. Heaven forfend you might actually want to pick up the burger and eat it.

Kites

My partner ate at Kites about four years ago on a business trip and had raved about it. We finally got there last Wednesday and it did not disappoint. The service was warm and friendly, and judging from how many customers were greeted by name, they must have a lot of regulars which is a great sign. The food was delicious with not a hint of the dreaded msg. We tried Wan Ton soup, chicken Yuk Sung, chicken in oyster sauce and black peppered beef, all of which was excellent. A nice touch was being offered a complimentary extra helping of rice to finish out the meal - a gesture that costs little, but will be rewarded with, at least, a return visit!

Beautifully presented food, and very tasty to boot! We had a mixture of individual starters - the crab, potato cakes, guinea fowl and lamb kebab - all of which generated happy munching noises. The mains were equally good with particular mention being given to the pork chop dish. It is undeniably expensive, but would definitely leap to the top of the list for celebrating a special occasion.

The visit here was a mixed experience. After multiple linguistic attempts we managed to order a couple of pre-dinner vodka&tonics. We ordered onion bhaji to share, which was tasty, then tandoori chicken, very good - well marinaded and perfectly cooked, and, unfortunately, a very mediocre, utterly bland, butter chicken. I had wanted to ask for a 'spicy' butter chicken, but this did not appear to be an option. Indian restaurants I have visited before have a note in the menu to the effect that the spiciness/heat of standard dishes could be adjusted as per customer request, but this did not appear to be the case with this establishment.

This was a great eating experience! The food and combinations were unusual, but really palatable, the restaurant itself is warm and inviting as was the waitress who made a huge effort with all the diners. The portions are not huge, as some other reviewers have mentioned, but the flavours and atmosphere made up for that slight drawback

Tried this restaurant for the first time last night. It always appears busy so that seemed like a good sign, but the food was disappointing and the acoustics make it very noisy. Although there were at least 5 tables beside us free, we were left waiting by the hostess/seater for over 10 minutes at the entrance. In fact a group of 7 behind us walked out - maybe they had the right idea....
