The Butcher GrillPosted on 10 February 2011
My new favourite restaurant. Flawless fish and steak, sticky melty ribs, delicious oysters and friendly staff keeping a watchful eye. I want to go every night.

Eatery 120Posted on 10 January 2011
We dropped in early for a main course, not feeling like cooking ourselves. The staff were friendly and accommodating. It's small and too brightly lit. There's a nice little smoking area, and the toilets are interesting. My battered haddock leaves me with nothing to say. There it is; averagely done, again. I could be in any pub - anywhere. The tartar sauce was good. The chips were soggy and undercooked. The pea puree seemed okay, I don't really like the stuff, it's rarely made tart enough for my taste. But the beer and staff were lovely!

Quay 16 @ MV Cill AirnePosted on 30 July 2010
I love boats, I had to go, yet I was not expecting much. I thought they'd have a fry 'em up pub-grub mentality. But no, this is good cooking. Dining from a set menu, the risotto was fantastic, I was more than happy. The steak (rib-eye) was good too & the coffee superb! (The sugar sticks served with it make you take sugar in your coffee even if you don't!) We had a lovely waiter, it's a great talking point, drinks on deck gives an interesting view of Dublin city & the new bridge makes it more accessible from the South-side, I recommend.

ely bar & brasseriePosted on 30 July 2010
Four of us had a great night, feeling continental outside Ely on a balmy summers eve. We don't mind mistakes, once they are set right. Three steaks came out, only one the way it was meant to be (the fourth dish -chicken- was deemed perfect). Two dry, well done fillets were taken away and replaced with melt in the mouth rare & medium rare slim cut steak. Properly cooked, as per order. A mistake more than well rectified. However it takes a lot for me to send food back & I shouldn't have had to, nor should we have had to explain the difference between blue, rare, medium and well done to our waiters in a restaurant known for its meat. So we ate two by two, it was worth it in the end.

SabaPosted on 22 July 2010
Flawless!
I am over the moon to have found Saba. The most gorgeous food - I haven't had such a sated chilli smile on my face since being in the far east.
There is a great buzz in Saba; happy customers such as myself, imbibing from a fabulous, reasonably priced wine list. (Lots of beer choice too I noted)
Tempura Nua Cua (soft shell crab) is an amazing starter, I also tasted the sesame asparagus & duck rolls and was very impressed.
The hake in red curry sauce and triple chilli monkfish were my main course high-lights. The rest of my group waxed lyrical about the Bangkok noodles and Green Chicken curry.
Cocktails for dessert. Delicious! GO!!

South WilliamPosted on 06 April 2010
They have stopped doing pies!
Nooooo!!
And they don't do them in their sister restaurant.
Another good pie place in Dublin bites the dust.
RIP

Punjabi By NaturePosted on 06 April 2010
I have an addiction for the mint dip that comes with their poppudums, amazing.
I'm not keen on the starters, so tend to stick with Balti beef or a mixed grill and their great pilau rice.
I'm also not keen on the room, it should be fine, but it's not. The atmosphere is on the wonky side. Take out only for me (and lots of it!).

Saagar Indian RestaurantPosted on 05 April 2010
I really like Saagar, I like the linen. I like the tandoori mixed grill. The staff are perfect, they know when you want something, but they leave you alone. It's not a place I want to linger in though.

Marco Pierre White Steakhouse & GrillPosted on 05 April 2010
I like the room and the staff are great. But it is never as good as the bill suggests.Marco's is annoyingly expensive.
The crab starter is great, but I hate eggs and there is no mention of the egg layer on the menu. Beware! My rib-eye was full of grizzle, 70% full. But I was unlucky, my fellow diners had no similar problem.
On another visit... the beef carpaccio starter was very good and the Halibut too. Lovely coffee. Hate the bill. I'm sure I'll go again, but I won't be the one making the booking.

Chez MaxPosted on 15 December 2009
The sea bass! Perfectly cooked. The sauce is heavenly. Max must have the best fish in the city centre. No worrying that they are barely legal, they are a great adult size.
I love the atmosphere, (I did feel sorry for the couple tagged onto the end of our large table, I thought they were friends of friends!). But there is enough romance and appeal one couldn't complain. Great coffee, great starters.
We were on the set menu, so I couldn't have the frogs legs, so i have to go back. ANY excuse!

Milano (Clarion Quay)Posted on 14 December 2009
Milano is a machine, they know how to make great pizza. Not being a dessert person I can only say everyone else loves them. I can't fathom why anyone would order pasta in here.
This visit we got a great table, on the river side. All was exactly what to expect; except the blank, insipid and indifferent service boarding on rude.

PichetPosted on 14 December 2009
Go to Pichet. Great seating. The grub is amazing, I (in three visits) always have fish & fish, with no complaints other than I still haven't had room for the cheese plate yet. I like all the game dishes too, but have only had a few fork-fulls.
My problem is the noise levels when the place is full of women. I couldn't hear my friends when the girls got giddy. (I have been that giddy female, so they are not my complaint - I be happy to look at egg boxes on the walls if it would help!).
I don't understand why the place is not full of men, its such a man's menu. I encourage all the men out there to run to Pichet, you'll love it. Your women already do.

Nonna ValentinaPosted on 11 March 2009
A good restaurant with really friendly staff - at exactly the right distance.
I find most dishes could come down in price.
They are good but often heavy.
I need rather than want a coffee afterwards.
Because of that I only tend to go in the cold months.
However a main course is loads of food.
But you'll want a couple of starters as they sound so flavoursome!
So I usually do one or the other. Inadvertently bringing down the price.

Dax RestaurantPosted on 11 March 2009
Yes Dax is lovely. I'm excited when I go.
Perhaps too much as I am always a bit disappointed, but with nothing in particular.
I can quibble with myself over small things;
I don't like the texture of the terrine - but is that just me?
My mains I always feel are missing something - what is it?
Without "it" the food is good but doesn't shine out in my mind from any other (for example hake wrapped in parma) that I've had at a much more competitive price.
Lovely wine's and petit fours. Lovely cheese board too. But I would have preferred a bit more of each cheese, even if that means less of a selection.
Is it just the room? Are the lights too bright?
I love Dax - but...

Itsa4Posted on 11 March 2009
Yum yum yum yum yum yum YUM!
Great wine list, great produce, perfect balance.
I can safely say I am addicted to the lentil salad.
Normally I go for the fish of the day - always yum!
But the the lamb sausages.... I am salivating as I type.
I always leave Itsa4 feeling virtuous, even if I've had more wine than I should.
Knowing it's all good stuff I suppose. I think more restaurants should doff their hat's to their suppliers.
They would if they were proud, wouldn't they?

Green NineteenPosted on 11 March 2009
I like this place.
They are busy and still finding their sea legs when they get swapped - which of course they were; it was prime-time Saturday night & the food is cheap & tasty.
Mixed meat, cheese & bread platters were grand (I didn't get to taste any cold meat - it was wolfed at the other end of the table, so I can't say!)
Bread could have been warmed & some olive oil would be nice on the side. But who's complaining? It's the same price as a latte in a 5 star hotel!
The mains were great - 10 euro a pop.
Fish & Chips - the best I've had in years, really.
And a small green salad, double macciato, 3 beers & two cocktails = 47 euro including a tip!
They need to get a properly trained cocktail person. Both were overly sugered and limed.
Go to Green nineteen, you'll be amazed.
