Shimla Indian RestaurantPosted on 21 December 2009
My experience at Shimla was overall at positive one. They currently offer a great value early bird menu. Myself and my boyfriend's family decided to venture in and for many of us it was a first experience with Indian cuisine. The waiters were extremely helpful patiently explaining each course and its level of spiceiness to us. While we decided, fresh popadoms and various delicious sauces were left on our table which we all enjoyed. My starter was a spicy mimosa which was great as was my tomato & coriander based main course all served with a generous helping of pilau rice. My fellow diners enjoyed teriakis, byranis and kormas and everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. House wine was very keenly priced and so two bottles were enjoyed. Finally the waiters served us a complementary baby guiness each which was very much appreciated. I will definitely be returning. Only negative point was the heating in the restaurant wasn't great and it was a very cold winters night. Thank God for the spices!!!

MentonsPosted on 21 April 2009
I have never been a fan of hotel food! perhaps its something to do with having horrendous meals at debs and weddings, but in general you always feel that there is something less exciting and less satisfying about eating in a hotel restaurant. Mentons defied all of these expectations. For my cousin's hen party there was a gang of 15 of us staying at the hotel and the meal we received was part of a package. I didn't hold out much hope, expecting that we would receive the barest of choice. far from it! there were five starters to choose from and eight main courses, as well as five desserts. Everything was cooked to perfection and with huge portions. I opted for the goats cheese salad to start. It was very tasty as were the chicken& mushroom vol-a-vents, duck liver pate and casear salads had by my friends.
Main courses arrived to many oohs and aahs! the portion sizes were huge. steaks, carbonaras, seabass and salmon dishes were all had and savoured.finally gourmet desserts such as rasberry sorbet and raspberry mousses, creme brulees and bramley apple pie were all served elegantly.Teas and coffees rounded off a great meal.would highly recommend this restaurant and this hotel in general.

Bullys Restaurant - CLOSEDPosted on 02 March 2009
As mentioned in a previous review of this restaurant, it seems that the food is the main problem. Although some might argue that is a fairly major problem, some how Bullys managed to pull of fairly pleasant evening for myself and three friends regardless. My starter of a warm chicken salad was bland but not inedible, while my three friends loved their mussels starters but felt portion size was on the small side. For mains, my friends went for pizzas and fishy pasta dishes, all of which were given the 'yeh that was ok' kind of response. Myself, i went for a sicilian chicken pasta dish which unfortunately was on the boring side. it was merely two chicken fillets dumped on a pile of spagetti with a very simple tomato sauce. I wasn't impressed. However capucinos were good as was the homemade tirimasu. In addition the waitresses never made a move to shove us out and even offered us complimentary hot ports. nice touch. It wasn't a horrid experience but the food is not really going to wow. maybe better for a casual lunch.

GemellesPosted on 08 February 2009
Had dinner at Gemelles with my mother. Not being a Galway local, it was recommended to me by a friend so we took a chance. we weren't disappointed. my goat's cheese parcel for starters was amazing. huge portion of cheese, warm and melt in the mouth, served with a delicious red pepper chutney and basil coulis.my mother's crostini was delicious and again a very big portion. For main course we went for organic sirloin steak and fillet of cod with basil mash, as well as sauteed mushrooms, onions, garlic potatoes and vegetables. everything was delicious and cooked to perfection.the portions were huge!!only half was finished but not for want of trying.along with a half caraffe of house red wine, the entire meal came to a very reasonable 67euro.well worth it.if any downside it was the service which was a little slow but that is definitely better than being rushed out!!i'll be back on my next visit to Galway!

Chez PierrePosted on 25 January 2009
Being a native Kilkenny woman and one who enjoys eating out, I thought I had tried the best Kilkenny cuisine has to offer. However this hidden gem and eluded me until last night and wow, am I regretting I've waited so long to try it out.
The goose liver pate and smoked haddock starters were flawlessly simple yet remarkably tasty. while the main courses of cod and haddock consisted of melt in the mouth, perfectly cooked fish accompanied by roasted potatoes and vegetables. delicious! finished the meal with a cheese board, amazing chocolate cake. All of the above combined with a bottle of house red came to a non-too demanding 87euro. will definitely be back. highly recommend chez pierre!

Ristorante Rinuccini RestaurantPosted on 15 December 2008
Was treated to a meal here by my boyfriend for passing a major exam! i love the atmosphere in this restaurant. maybe its being so close to Kilkenny castle but it really is very cosy and intimate inside. I love Italian food and really enjoyed my meal here however i would say that the list of pastas was a little disappointing because of its sparseness. i think my boyfriend's veal would have been a better option, it was delicious. also the house wine in this restaurant is amazingly cheap and of a very high standard due to their ownering a vineyard. great bonus! would definitely recommend this restaurant for special intimate occassions. it is at the higher price range for restaurants in Kilkenny but even now and again is worth it!!

Seagrass of Portobello BridgePosted on 15 December 2008
Visited seagrass for a christmas night out with five work colleagues. The set menu was reasonably priced at 42euro for three courses and had an interesting selection. staff were so accomodating especially considering members of our party were late and arrived sporadically!! i had the meatballs to start followed by sesame and goats cheese crusted organic salmon. the fish was amazing but the scallion mash that accompanied it was a little watery and tasteless. on the whole though this is a potential little gem. couldn't be more complementary about the staff.

Key LargoPosted on 10 July 2008
whether for an early bird (10euro for two courses-unbelievable value) or a romantic/girls night out evening meal, this is one of Kilkenny's best restaurants. Predominantly moroccan, the menu is expansive enough to suit the fussiest of tastes.Highly recommend the lamb cutlets as a main course.Great desserts too and service is always accomodating and friendly.no wonder this place is full to the brim every weekend.well deserved recognition.

Lautrecs Tapas & Wine Bar KilkennyPosted on 10 July 2008
Lautrecs definitely offers one of the best early birds in town. Delicious bruschetta to start, cajun salmon for main and a coffee.all for 23euro. this isn't like other early birds which tend to offer sub-standard food to match the cheap price.this is top notch without the top end prices. great wine list too.

Italian Connection (Kilkenny)Posted on 09 July 2008
By far my favourite Italian restaurant in Kilkenny. Modest prices for authentic Italian food. Would highly recommend the garlic bread, which is done on a pizza base. Pasta dishes are oozing with flavour and are of a very generous portion size. Only drawback is the close proximty of tables, sometimes it can feel like you are listening to other peoples conversations.but the food more than makes up for this small inconvenience.

Ripleys Steak HousePosted on 09 July 2008
A lot of people are quite reluctant to visit steak houses, fearing that aside from steak everything else on the menu will be below par. However, on this occasion fears were unfounded. Although I love steak, I opted for the tiger prawn fajitas while my boyfriend chose the rib-eye steak with fries. Both meals were mouth-wateringly good. The steak was cooked to tender perfection with a generous helping of fries. While my fajitas came with a delicious mix of guacamole, sour cream, roasted vegetables, salsa and a sizable portion of tiger prawns. Great food experience all round.

Carluccio's CaffePosted on 19 June 2008
Friends of mine who had lived in London recommended this place to me. Although the decor is slightly clinical, the modest menu boded well. An endless menu can leave one feeling that the restaurant is over-stretching itself. I opted for the penne with sausage sauce while friends had the spinach ravioli and others went for clam spaghetti. We all agreed that this was simple Italian food at its best. Although others have questioned its prices, I think 14euro is pretty standard for Dublin pasta prices. Great wine list too. Wouldn’t come here for romantic dinner, but great for a girl’s lunch after some retail therapy!

An SuganPosted on 17 June 2008
Ate at An Sugan two days ago while travelling back from a weekend in West Cork. Had heard this was a great spot for seafood. Both my boyfriend and I opted for the traditional fish of the day with chips. We were served two fresh pieces of mouth watering fish in a light, freshly cooked batter. It was a simple but satisfying meal. The only down side is the atmosphere in the restaurant which borders on canteen at times. But in terms of food, this place was spot on.

O'Connor's Seafood RestaurantPosted on 17 June 2008
Had the pleasure of dining at O'Connors last weekend with my boyfriend. We are both big lovers of fresh seafood and had heard this was THE place for delicious fish. The rumours were all true! what a feast! mussels & prawns were our chosen starters. Both were cooked to perfection and mouth-wateringly good. As for main course, despite the appeal of the main menu,we opted for the specials. I have never seen such a list of specials, full to burst with amazing sea-food options. My boyfriend opted for the monkfish & prawn risotto while I chose John dory with creamy leeks. Both of these dishes were fantastic, every bite a dream! And they came with delicious potato gratin, chips and vegetables. The serving staff were more than willing to offer us more of anything we needed. This restaurant is first rate and I would highly recommend it.

DarwinsPosted on 11 June 2008
Visited Darwin with two work colleagues recently. Had heard that because of the involvement of butchers, that their steak was first rate. Those rumours weren't wrong! Started with the beautifully presented crab meat and prawn spring rolls. delicious! my fillet steak, which was cooked medium to well done (they are very particular about how you like your steak cooked) was the most mouth watering piece of red meat I can say I've ever tasted. At 32euro, it is a pricey main course, but if steak is your thing, its worth every cent. The meal was finished with the chef's selection which consists of two-three desserts on a platter, chosen from the main menu by the chef. Original idea and perfect for sharing!
The only downside to this otherwise flawless meal was the restaurant itself. It was freezing! perhaps too much air-con I don't know but it definitely put a dampener on the experience. All in all this is a first rate restaurant. Perhaps the prices relegate it to a mere special occasion or treat but that can't take from the quality of its food. Looking forward to another visit!

Elephant & CastlePosted on 07 May 2008
Although it is slightly annoying that this restaurant dont take reservations, its location in the heart of temple bar means there is plenty to occupy you for your half hour wait for a table.for starters, the chicken wings are finger licking good!huge portions though so unless you're eating with a sumo wrestler i'd recommend one portion between two.my friend & I went for burgers which were tender, juicy and topped with deliciously milky mozarella and a fabulous basil puree.the chips were authentically presented with skins still on.this meal was flavoursome from start to finish.great place to kick off a night!

Acapulco RestaurantPosted on 29 February 2008
Went for a birthday meal to Acapulco this week. Great atmosphere in this restaurant, almost feels like being on holidays! Ordered the Mexican combo for starter which I would highly recommend, deep fried jalapenos are top notch!! Went for the crispy tostados for main course, while friends & family had fajita combo & tex-mex burger. Very enjoyable evening, food was tasty and well presented. It won't blow your mind but you will have a very enjoyable meal and won't come away bankrupt!!

Ciao Bella RomaPosted on 10 August 2007
I recently had the pleasure of having an early bird special at this delightful restaurant. For only 8.50 I was treated to an amazingly authentic and delicious bruschetta, an enormous, mouth watering pizza and a glass of fine house red wine. This has got to be one of the best value early bird meals in Dublin. I can't recommend it enough. Fabulous food, even better prices.100% approval!!

New Millennium Chinese RestaurantPosted on 23 July 2007
I feel compelled to write a review of this restaurant considering the atrocious experience myself and my mom had there yesterday. We decided to try the restaurant before we attended a concert in Iveagh Gardens. The internet reviews were mixed but considering our love of Chinese food and its central location we decided to give it a go. The restaurants atmosphere boded well, it was bright and clean. However that is as far as I can extend the compliments. My starter of Thai style fish cakes consisted of three soggy, greasy undercooked 'fish cakes' at the questionable price of 8.50. But that was only a 'taste' of things to come. Myself and my mother ordered chicken satay and chicken with vegetable. These are two of our favourite dishes and so it was with shock that we were presented with the most disgustingly undercooked chicken I have ever seen. It was pink on the inside and dangerously undercooked. When we both agreed that it would be asking a lot of anyone to accept the dish I called over the manager who proceeded to interrogate me on my definition of 'undercooked'...he poked at my plate and told me that it was cooked in his opinion. I felt like a criminal on trial, trying to plead my case when it was clear the meat was severely undercooked. We were offered another dish and when we declined, saying we were completely off our food at this stage, we were almost interrogated as to the reason for this. In the end our experience resulted in no dinner, a Spanish inquisition from the manager, and 9.40 including service charge being paid for the most revolting excuse for a fish cake I have ever seen. Avoid this place at all costs. Trust me.
