Mauzac Tapas Bar - ClosedPosted on 19 April 2010
Three of us went here on Sunday evening to try Spanish tapas. The portions are small so the recommendation is to order 2 or 3 dishes each. We ordered 7 tapas between 3 of us - having already had the pitta bread humus & olives while we read the menu. The dishes included Prawns (5 only) in garlic, stuffed pepper, calamari, meatballs, and chicken in Parma ham to name a few. Portion were fairly small as you expect for tapas but having said that the 7 tapas were sufficient for the 3 of us. The average price per dish is around €5 to €6. We had 2 desserts, 1 espresso and a nice bottle of white house and the bill came to a very reasonable €70 (with out service) to which we added 10% for good service

Greens RestaurantPosted on 19 April 2010
Last Friday we wanted to see the nearby Carousel Bar so we visited Greens for a bite to eat first.
For starters we both had the Seared Scallops & Crispy Pork Belly, Hoi Sin, Cauliflower Puree scallops - it was below par with only 3 scallops and large portion of pork belly. I expected a lot better for €9. For mains I had the Sea Bass, Crab Rosti, Rocket Salad, Tiger Prawns & Café De Paris Butter Sauce, the Crab Rosti was way over cooked - so much so it looked like a burnt burger and I couldn't taste the crab, the sea bass was over cooked and there were only 6 prawns. Not worth €23.
My friend had board special of 10oz sirloin steak accompanied with Triple Fried Chunky Potato Chips and Sautéed Greens which he said was very nice, at €26 it should be!
We had a bottle of house white and 2 coffees. The bill cam came to €90 to which we added 10% for attentive service.

The WeirPosted on 16 April 2010
We heard there was a chef so we decided to try it out not having been there for years. The place is the same as I remember, basically a pub with an unusual bar and an upstairs seating area that looks over the ground floor. We had a good meal, Salmon and steak and the prices were reasonable. service was good and a pint of plain was just right!!

The Leopardstown InnPosted on 16 April 2010
Very much the standard pub grub menu, but expensive. I wouldnt rate it above Average. Its an unusual pub that draws you back but I'd expect the food to be better quality for the prices charged or at least better value. The lighting in the place is poor making reading the menu difficult. The steak and chips which both of us has was tough and uninspiring. The service was fine, the food prices over the top for a pub!

King Sitric Fish RestaurantPosted on 03 April 2010
I have wanted to visit here for a long time but never got around to it because it is the miles from where I live. Anyway finally went last Saturday. The place itself is nice, its situation near the pier is great. We were in group of 6, all but one being fish fans. It was a special night out so we were all prepared to splash out a little more than normal.
Starters had by us included Oysters, crab morny and other mixed starters. 3 of us had lobster, one monkfish and one Turbot and one steak. All were good but the side dishes of veg and potatoes were very poor, warm at best and reheat jobs.
We had 3 mid range bottles of wine and 2 waters, 2 shared deserts and a few after dinner drinks. Service was a bit too in "in your face" for my liking. To the bill they automatically added a 12.5% service charge which I think is disgraceful in these recessionary times (it should be at the diners discretion).
It certainly was not value for money at €250 per couple and based on that I would not be rushing back.

YO Sushi (Dundrum)Posted on 24 March 2010
Have wanted to eat here for ages being a lover of Japanese food and having eaten it a lot while abroad. Finally managed lunch there today, the food is good but not the best Sushi I have ever had - think you need to go out side Ireland for that. Also it is expensive and you can rack up a big bill very quickly if you arenot careful. Liked it but it has a long way to go before it would be as good as some of the Japanese places I've eaten in in the US & the UK

LangkawiPosted on 18 March 2010
When here to try something different for a change. We arrived early 6pm on Paddys day and after some annoying confusion whether or not the early bird menu was on or not we eventually ordered off the early bird menu. food was was reasonably priced with adequated portions. We had starters follew by the beef and chicken dishes both of which were nice and spicey. A bottel of spanish red (nice & good value at €22). In all the meal wine & coffee without out service came to a very reasononable €67 - not bad and worth a revisit.

Jewel in the Crown (Dun Laoghaire)Posted on 09 March 2010
Went to the Jewel before a show in the pavillion. It is a traditional Indian restaurant as you would recall from 10 years or so ago, not like the new fusion modern Indian establishments that one is used to nowadays .
Regardless it was great to taste the old specials althought they are heavy laden with sauce. We really enjoyed it and it was very good value at €65 for dinner for two plus a bottle of wine. Only think i didnt like was the fact that the chicken tikka didnt appear to be from the tandor cooker (more like processed)
Service was very friendly and efficient.
Would go back.

Ristorante Morsiani - ClosedPosted on 08 February 2010
I agree with a previous reviewer that the menu has too much on it and while its nice to have info about a dish, it takes ages to work through and pick your dish. I also found the script very hard to read.
No other complaints - apart form the above evey thing else was very good, food, service, value. You wouldnt want to be on a diet if you order anything with a sauce as they are very rich and creamy (yum)
Will go back for sure.

A. CavistonPosted on 26 September 2009
Lunched here today after doing the shopping. Greystones was a buzz in the nice weather and lots of people were eating outside - very cosmopolitan and most unusual for Ireland this time of the year. A Caviston is nicely located on the edge of Greystones and hence a little quiter than the other places on the main steet. We had the Seafood Chowder and the Annagassan Crab Sandwich, both were excellent. Will go back for sure.

The Farm Cafe & RestaurantPosted on 25 September 2009
This place is about 3 miles before Roundwood village and appears to be part of Doujce Golf Club. Its fairly newly opened. I tried it again last week and had the Organic Homemade Beef Burger which at €15 I expected to be the business and in fairness it was very good althoght I still think a burger should not cost this much.
Place was about half full when I was there - reflecting its out of the way loaction I guess. Service was good and friendly and I'd go back again.

Flynn's SteakhousePosted on 31 July 2009
Brought a client here for golf and dinner.
Golf was good apart from the rain but the dinner was a bit below par and expensive.
To start we had scallops and Dublin Bay prawns followed by rack of lamb and steak. One dessert, a bottle of red wine @ €40 and two coffees.
The place was very quite. Service was fine but the food was nothing outstanding despite the fact that the bill worked out at nealy €80 a head. Had high expectations but felt that the place was lacking a spark!

DeepPosted on 27 July 2009
Was in Howth on Saturday & went here for lunch. The food was nice but not spectular. We shared a reasonable sized fish platter with a couple glasses of wine. There were 4 different types of fish on the platter (smoked salmon, fish cake, calamari, crayfish) with bread and dips. At €40 (including coffee) I did think it was a little expensive for a lunch for two but it was enjoyable.

The Garden Cafe @ Avoca Mount Usher GardensPosted on 27 July 2009
Dined there last Friday night for the first time in the evening having been there often during the day.
Lovely atmosphere and ambience to the place. The food, the service were very good too.....
Starters had Calamari and Crab Pot - both very good - althought more fish and less salad would be nice.
Steak and chunky chips and sea bass for mains - again both were very good. again there was lots of salad on the plate!
One ice cream desert, two coffees and a bottle of wine @ €40 resulted in a bill of €135 (including a 10% service charge automatically added!).
So on the down side - its expensive and the choice on the menus is limited. Apart from that very enjoyable.

Met a friend here for lunch to day. Have eaten here a few times (both lunch & diner) in the past but not recently.
It is a nice place if you can get over the fact that it is full of the "ladies who lunch" brigade.....not so bad in the evenings.
For a restaurant in Foxrock it is pretty good value for money, they dont try to fleece you just becasue its in Foxrock.
I had Fish & Chips with Mushy Peas, Chunky Chips and Tartar Sauce which was excellent . My friend had a Risotto dish which he liked. We had two glasses of white wine and the bill came to €50.

Having read the "rave reviews" finally decided to try this Indian.
First impressions - the location is not great - Dundrum cinema enterance but once inside the place itself is nice (very modern).
We were there early so decide to go for the early bird menu. I dont not what all the fuss is about, the food was nothing special, portions were very small and my mains arrived cold (no even warm).
Two starters, mains one coffee and two glasses of wine for €75 - steep for early bird!
There is better out quality and value out there in my opinion (even at enrty early bird level).

Anyway decided to try agian last night and in fairnest it was at all bab, I'd go so far as to say I enjoyed it but only rank it a 5.5 out of 10. The look of the place is appealing with big fish aquarium at the enterance and nice authentic looking chinese decor. The food is fine, shared starter folowed by house special chow mein and kung po chicken, but I've had better. Nice bottle of white macon luny and coffees - reasoanable value at 75 euro.

This well established restaurant in Greystones operates out of upstairs par of the building but a bistro/wine bar also operates on the ground floor with more limited choices but equally good food.
We went to the upstairs part and chose from an extensive menu, My wife had a lovely fish dish while I had the duck. The meal was of a very high standard and the atmosphere in the place wass great - a real buzz that night.
somewhat expensive but the Hungry Monk combines excellent pleasant service, wonderful food, and a huge wine list. I guess for a less costly night out go to the bistro

Hunters HotelPosted on 11 June 2009
Hunter's Hotel is one of the oldest coaching inns in Ireland, dating from c.1700. and as such you can feel its rather Edwardian atmosphere. Old world charm is the keystone of this restaurant, with antiques, polished brass, heirlooms, vintage prints, open fireplaces, and splendid gardens. For our meal we both had the specialties of the house roast Wicklow lamb served with potatoes minted herbs & vegetables fresh from the garden according to the menu This is popular spot for Sundayluch so you'd need to book. I enjoyed it and I'd go back

This is a lovely spot with a great atmosphere, during the summer full of tourists / day trippers to Glenalough. So it can get very busy on nice day, particularly bank holidays. I have eaten here many times but I try to avoid the manic busy summer nights, that way service and the quality of the food tend to be better. They do an excellent steak with all the timmings. Home made pate is great too. I will keep going back as the quality is good, value is not too bad and it has never let me down.

Visited this restaurant on the Monday Bank Holiday for a work related dinner only after trying a number of other places all of which were closed. I found the service to be very good, staff and management were very friendly and efficient. The place was very welcoming and quite busy.
There were 5 of us, 2 had fish chowder and 3 had crab salad (small & expensive but nice). For Mains 2 had the lamb , one steak, one hake (me) and one John dory. Everyone cleaned their plates so that was a good sign.
Two bolltes of wine, 3 sparrkling waters, 3 desert and 4 coffees saw the bill come to just iunder €385, just under €80pp including service charge. All in all not bad but there is better available in this price range.

Baan Thai (Leopardstown)Posted on 01 April 2009
Good Thai cuisine but there are a few downsides.
Finding Parking nearby is a real pain in the butt.
Service although very freindly (many of the staff are Thai) was very slow.
Frozen desserts - yuck surely they could do better.
While the inside is nice with Thai furniture etc and special Thai tables (set into the floor) the outside is more like an office building than a restaurant.
Also I dont think they have copped on to the fact that there is a recession and their prices are exepensive for faily modest portions.
Having said all that on the plus side their Thai food is good (the Tom Yum Kung soup and the Red Curry were very nice), they serve Thai beer as well as a fairly extensive wine list.

Setvice was very good and attentive.
We had the home made organic burger with fries and salad, a couple of beers and coffees (no starter, sides or dessert), not cheap at €48.
In summary a nice venue, good food and good service but a little expensive.

The starter was 4 diiferent items (duck, prawn, chicken and fish) - fantastic.
Lots of mains too many to mention.

Paid a return visit last Saturday having been a regular here for years. It was a busy and popular spot which thankfully did not detract from the efficient service.
Decided to stay away from set menus and picked al la catre. Prawn crackers Yuck Sung and ribs to start followed by Kung Po Chicken and Cantonese Duck (both with fried rice) for main course all washed down with a bottle of Louis Vatour. All in meal came to a reasonable €90.
Food was very good except the ribs which were a little dry and the portion was on the small side to say the least.
A good all round Chinese restaurant.

The treat was an overnight on the Monday before Paddys Day 2009.
Arrived to the hotel around 3pm. Lobby is beautiful but there was an overpowering smell of chips due to the number of people eating late lunch in the foyer. Now a great first impression!!
There isn’t much around the area so we decided to eat in the restaurant that night and made a booking for 7.45pm. We could have eaten in the bar which appears to be the popular choice for many. Having said that the restaurant was almost full by 9pm.
The food was excellent but VERY EXPENSIVE !!
For starters my wife had very nice Homemade vegetable Soup while I had the Kilmore Fish stew which was super
I had the Garlic Basted Prime Angus Fillet of Beef with mash potato, spinach, mushrooms and Jus, while my wife had Breast of Barbarie Duck with Organic Sweet Potato Puree & Fine Beans. I have to say that both mains were fantastic but at almost €40 each they would want to be.
We had one desert of home made ice cream in brandy snap between the two of us and with a bottle of French Château d’Aumiere Saint-Jean Côteux du Languedoc 2004 wine at €30. The bill came to €160
The service and staff were good, but quite fine dining standard.
Overall very nice but needs to up its game to justify its high prices.

The Weir BistroPosted on 18 March 2009
After some confusion between Hotels we eventually managed to stay in Jury's Doyle in Cork for the weekend.
We decided to give the Hotel Restaurant a try on the Saturday. It was surprisingly good, we had a platter of Parma ham, rocket, parmesan, mozzarella olives and bread to start – one between two is more than ample fro a nice starter. Staying on the theme of one plate between two, we had the chateaubriand fillet steak served with Onion Rings, Flat Cap Mushroom, Confit Tomatoes.
No desert and with a bottle of red the bill came to €90 which I though was reasonable value for a good meal.

A Taste Of ThailandPosted on 18 March 2009
Was in Cork for the weekend and decided to try one of the local Thai restaurants.
Found this place easy enough just across the bridge. It was fairly empty when we arrived (only one other table of two) but before long there were about 6 tables.
The food was very good - we had the mixed platter between the two of us (Thai fish cakes, kari puffs, chicken wings and satay sticks). The satay was excellent.
For mains I had the Thai Beef Salad, which contained wok fried beef slivers and tossed amongst seasonal greens with a Thai style dressing. Menu said served on a bed of crispy rice noodles but I couldn’t find any. Also personally I would have liked it with some chillie to give the dish some heat.
My wife had the chicken masaman curry, again a very nice Thai dish with coconut, star aniseed and cardomen.
A side dish of bok choi was a delicious compliment.
With a bottle of red Melbec at €28 the meal came to €85 to which we added 10% for good friendly service.

Bates RestaurantPosted on 08 March 2009
Great Restaurant with excellent food and reasonable prices. We have eaten there about 10 times and never once were we disappointed. The owner takes a personal interest to ensure that evertyhing is as it should be for your table. The food is mainly italian. One visist I was not expecting much becasue it was new years eve but I have to say standards did not slip and it was a great evening.
Home made pate and pasta dishes are great.
One very minor gripe would be the uneven floors - some table are on a slope but others would argue that this adds to the character of the place.
Another thing try the Cartoon inn for a dring before or after - it is a very nice littel pub.

China SichuanPosted on 07 March 2009
This used to be a great spot for Chinese food when it was on Kilmacud road - great food, good atmosphere, old fashioned service and plenty of parking nearby. But it has modernised its look and menu since moving to Sandyford.
Parking nearby is almost impossible. The restaurant is modern and the Service was OK.
I have been a few times now and I keep hoping it will spring back to its previous incarnation but it never does. There were some memorable dishes served at the old location (shredded lamb in chillie and garlic) which dont make a reappearance. Shame it was ace.
However they are doing some DimSung(spelling!) which is very nice but expensive.
Reserving opinion - more in hope than expectation.

This is a decent mid range Indian restaurant. The type you will keep going back to for some good indian food.
It's traditional indian fare unlike many of the modern fancy indian restaurants that have popped up of the last number ro years.
You will get a good chicken tikka here and I love their chana masala.
On average with a bottle of wine a meal for two is €80 to €90.
We do go back because you know what you will get and it can be relied on to deliver.

The Roundwood InnPosted on 07 March 2009
You kinda have like tradition to like the Roundwood Inn.
It got a below par review in on of the Sunday papers recently. As someone who has eaten there for well over 20 years I felt the writer of the article was missing the point. The place is very traditional and that is why people like it so much. The dishes dont change very often, and neither does anything else. This seemed to disappoint the writer of the article.
You can eat in the bar section beside a big open fire or dine in the restaurant (weekends). The food is very homely.
They do have a fantastic dublin bay prawn starter - although it is very expensive for a starter.
They do butter the bread which is somewhat unusual and querky in this day an age.
They do a nice vension stew with local vension which in season is very good.
There are also some unusual offerings reflecting the owners Austrian heritage.
I say Roundwood Inn stay as you are, dont change. Many would pay good money to be as good as you.

The Fern House Cafe at Avoca KilmacanoguePosted on 07 March 2009
Dined there last night for the first time.
Beautifut Atmosphere and ambience to the place.
The food was very good too.... I had pate to start followed by the moroccan lamb meze board both were very tasty.
My wife had the tempua sea bream which was super followed by the chicken dish - not a morsel was left
Our friends had the garden salad and the Eden Fish pie to start followed by crab claw pasta and a steak. The Eden fish pie had large chunks of fish and was apoint of debate as to how Eden Fish Pie can or should be on the Avoca menu, regardless it was delisious.
Everyone really enjoyed the food and the location.
We had 3 bottles of wine and the bill came to €250 incliuding service. A little expensive in this day and age but it was lovely evening and would be perfect for a special occasion.
The service was very pleasing and unobtrosive.
I'll be going back for sure.
