Rock Lobster

Rock Lobster

Posted on 16 December 2012
Enjoyed a fantastic lunch yesterday in Rock Lobster. They offer a fantastic selection of great seafood dishes that can be shared or devoured on your own, for the meat lovers they offer a selection of serious steaks. We shared a brilliant Lobster Maine Roll stuffed with tender lobster, then we built our own platter of seafood, the beauty of Rock Lobster is that you are in control of the quantities that goes on the platter, we had oysters of which they offer you a choice of three types, we also had dublin bay prawns and a full brown crab, everything was perfect. I cannot wait to return maybe next time I shall try the 1kg 55 day porterhouse, which is for sharing.

Ballymaloe House

Ballymaloe House

Posted on 29 October 2012
I had an awful experience in Ballymaloe 4 years ago, I was brought there yesterday by relatives so I had no choice but to return, well if anything it is worse now than it was on my previous visit, the food that was served on the buffet was an absolute disgrace, cold food badly presented by staff who looked like they where dressed for a casual get together rather than serving in what it supposed to be a top restaurant. I would implore people not to waste their money on this place, it is a relic still living on its name. Because I was invited I never voiced my complaint but on our last visit one of the party complained but that was greeted with a less than favourable response by a senior member of this establishments management.

Ghan House

Ghan House

Posted on 18 March 2012
I noticed that the last review for Ghan House was posted in 2009, well its about time to bring it up to date, myself and my wife have just left after a lovely evening, we arrived a little early and we had two glasses of sparkling Italian while we looked over the menu in the small welcoming bar. We ordered and were brought up to the dining room which was pure old school but in a great way, each table was laid in crisp linen with a candle little flower arrangement proper full set up of cutlery, this may seem petty but sometimes this attention to detail matters when so many restaurants go for as little as possible on a table. To the food, a little smoked salmon fishcake to tickle the tastebuds followed by my choice scallops with a blackpudding filo cigar it was a great plate of food well presented with great balance of flavours, for my wife an excellent rabbit terrine. I had a wonderful rack of lamb served with a shank pasty and crisp belly which was perfectly cooked. My chocolate delice with cherries was another great plate well presented and did not fail with the taste. We enjoyed a wonderful Puligny Montrachet along with a nice Rioja and a lovely Californian Muscat with the chocolate delice. oh and I forgot to mention the wonderful plate of pasta cooked with a little butter and cheese that was served to my 2.5 year old little girl which she declared was delicious. Ghan House has a great reputation as a location that serves great food, tonight they proved to myself and my wife ( and daughter ) that its a reputation that is well earned, Thank you Paul and staff for a lovely evening.

Anvil Bistro Restaurant

Anvil Bistro Restaurant

Posted on 21 August 2011
Great to have the Anvil back. Enjoyed a great lunch with them today and even though its double the size it has opened with all the excellent staff from its previous location and they have also retained some favorites on the menu and the standard of food is as good as ever. The new restaurant is bright and spacious with an area for drinks before dining at the front. They are offering some great value early bird menus as well as some great al la carte choices being rolled out, they continue to offer great value lunch choices as well as breakfast. Overall the team at The Anvil are back bigger and better than ever and as regulars of the old establishment we are looking forward to many good meals with them in the future.

The Pines Cafe Bar and Restaurant

The Pines Cafe Bar and Restaurant

Posted on 05 July 2010
Despite a mix up with my lunch which was dealt with in an excellent manner by the waiting staff, the food at the Pines was good, the Beef and Guinness pie contained a generous portion of tender well flavoured beef, the lamb shank was cooked well with a decent selection of veg, overall the food is not bad for local pub food.

The staff were friendly and I'm afraid that is about all I can say, some of the worst food I have had in a long time.

Ananda

Ananda

Posted on 20 October 2008
Myself and four others dined in Ananda last Saturday night, the restaurant was very busy but despite this the service was attentive if a little hectic at times. As for the food it was as good as I had expected, a great use of traditional Indian spices to create some excellent dishes. What I would say is that some of the tables looked very close together which may not have been to comfortable for diners. While I like the traditional way Indian food is served Ananda steps it up a notch.

Dont waste your time, This is probably the most over rated restaurant in the country. Went for dinner with family a while back and it was just about average, went more recently for their Sunday lunch it was just plain awful. There is nothing good I can say about it, the presentation of the buffet was like something you would see from a home movie in the sixties I'm sorry but it was a disgrace to expect people to pay for this. Because I was invited as a guest I did not voice any opinion to the staff but if I had of being paying I would have. This place is living on a reputation as a place that is leading the way regards food, dont make me laugh.

An Poitin Stil

An Poitin Stil

Before I continue I want to commend the mangeress in charge who dealt with my complaint without fuss. Now on to the food they say hunger is good sauce so I put the fact that no one bar one felt the chicken wings were cold and soggy was down to hunger, so on to the mains. We ate in the lounge and the dirty menu and I mean sticky man handled dirty menu did not inspire confidence. The choices were dated and 1980's offerings, two went for burgers with frozen chips and bought in coleslaw, I went for the cod thinking they cant get it wrong and they did I got three greasy over cooked offerings on a bed of the same said frozen chips which I just could not eat, this is where I have to give it to the person who seemed by instinct to know things were wrong and promptly change my order without any fuss. This pub is located in a place on the N7 that must do a great passing trade, but as a local having twice eating here I will go back for a drink but will not be trying their food again.

Pizza Stop

Pizza Stop

Posted on 21 May 2008
Pizza stop is a very good slice of Italy tucked away in a lane just off Grafton Street, went there with a group of lads last weekend. Not one of us could find fault with our food, and it is also very good value. While there are other chain Italian restaurants opening in the city which lack true Italian atmosphere, Pizza Stop is as close to the real deal as you can get, it is not high end fine dining but what they do they do it well.

Bar Italia (Ormond Quay)

Bar Italia (Ormond Quay)

I will keep this short and sweet the only good thing about the meal we had was the wine. Im sorry to say but this was probably the worst Italian food I have had, the dessert was ok but outside of that the food was not good. The seafood risotto was terrible, boiled water had more taste and texture than what was offered, the pasta dishes were dry stodge. Maybe it was a bad night but I will be hard pressed to go back and try this restaurant again.

Pearl Brasserie

Pearl Brasserie

Posted on 20 March 2008
This is an excellent restaurant that never fails to impress me. Four of us dined here and among us was a vegetarian. I had fois gras which was excellent and followed with fillet steak which was very good, my wife had the roguefort ravioli while the filling was good the pasta was a little bland, but her quail main did not disappoint, our two friends dipped into the vegetarian menu for starters one having a tempura the other the potato and wasabi salad both dishes were recieved very well, for the main course the true vegetarian had the spinach fondue which was polished off. I have to mention the vegetarian menu, a lot of care and attention has gone into a menu that in other restaurants choices for non meat eaters are often very limited and poorly put together, not here as a lover of meat I have to tip my hat to the chef for what is offered, and it added to the night that my guest got to enjoy a excellent selection of dishes. The cheese board was excellent and when we enquired about the selection the waiter who compiled the board was a font of knowledge and everyone who gets the cheese should allow him to share his knowlegde and passion. Desserts again no complaints, the meal was accompanied by a very good Gigondas and an equally good Pouilly Fuse. This Pearl is a true gem on the Dublin dining scene, sorry about the pun:-)

The Hungry Monk

The Hungry Monk

Posted on 20 March 2008
My hunger was more than satisfied by our meal at the Hungry Monk. We dined early in the wine bar downstairs and while it can either be a high stool at the window table or a very low stool beside the door to the kitchen if you get a seat grab it for I dont think you will be disappointed with your food. I had the kidneys for starters which were top drawer and the deep fried cod for my main course was crispy yet maintained its moistness inside, my wife opted for the steak which was cooked to perfection and was very good. There were two staff working and they dealt with the service quickly and in a friendly manner. A lot of new eateries are opening up in Greystones but this restaurant has been part of the village for a long time and I am sure it will continue to hold its own among the newbies. I look forward to going back to dine upstairs to try there larger dinner menu.

First Floor Bar & Brasserie @ Harvey Nichols

First Floor Bar & Brasserie @ Harvey Nichols

Posted on 12 February 2008
In my opinion Harvey Nics has the potential to match some of the cities favorite restaurants, the staff in this restaurant are exceptional, always there without being overbearing. Their sommelier knows how to treat good wine, one of my pet hates is restaurants that offer quality wines without decanters, that is not a problem here our wine was dealt with properly. On to the food, some people may think the manner in which it is presented is pretentious, I think its a reflection of a creative team of chefs who are going that little bit further to give us a different dining experience. Though the portions may appear small all at our table found that by the end of the meal we were all very satisfied showing that the portions were very well balanced. Five of us dined and there were no complaints about any dish. The steak I had was one off the best I have tasted in a while, perfectly cooked very rare and very tender. The cheese and desserts again no fault could be found. Harveys is not one of the cheapest places to eat but do not be put off by this, if you like to experience in Tom Dorleys words on a recent tv programme about another young innovative chef " a plaayt of dinner "(excuse the spelling of plate but its the best way to convey the stupid accent he used) then go to a pub carvery, but if you like to try a different approach to food then don't bypass Harveys.

Tamara Restaurant

Tamara Restaurant

Posted on 26 January 2008
For a new restaurant, Tamara have hit the ground running. We dined here tonight for the first time and both of us were very impressed by the standard of both food and service. A very good selection of Thai and Asian dishes, I had the steamed seafood pudding, selction of seafood wrapped in pak choi with herbs, chilli and coconut milk, then steamed in foil and finished at the table, great dish. I would highly recommend a visit, but be advised book ahead. We arrived at seven without a booking and they looked after us, we had but leave by nine which was fine and by that time the restaurant was almost full.
