The Larder Cafe Restaurant

The Larder Cafe Restaurant

This is a convenient place for lunch for me, and I also get a morning coffee there some days. The premises themselves are lovely, and the food is usually pretty good. My Shepherd's Pie today was mediocre though, but my friend was very pleased with his nutroast. Both were reasonably priced, a few Euro cheaper than one would pay for the same sort of thing in other places. Service is a bit slapdash, and I always feel, even when I'm only getting a take away coffee, that there place is overstaffed. There seem to be more waiting staff than a place of that size requires, but no manager to take charge of things.

Cheap and cheerful seems to be the constant refrain here, and its hard to say otherwise. They do the simple things well, and there's usually a nice busy, friendly atmosphere (though on my last visit I was cursed with a table beside a group of people who weren't quite as hilarious as they thought they were). My pasta and meatballs was tasty, and my friends were pleased with their pizzas. The house wine was more than acceptable too. Service was sloppy - had to ask for the bill three times, and never got glasses for our jug of water, but for the price, I wasn't complaining much.

Mao Restaurant (Chatham Row)

Mao Restaurant (Chatham Row)

I actually thought the recent closure was permanent, so it was something of a surprise to find myself there yesterday afternoon. I concur with the reviewers above who feel that Mao hasn't moved with the times. After a closure for renovations, you'd expect things to have freshened up somewhat, but the menu and premises are not very different from my first visit there back in 1999. Its a nice place and the food is pretty good, but there are now plenty more Asian fusion restaurants in Dublin, many of them better than Mao. I had five spice chicken, an old favorite of mine from the days when I was a regular visitor, which was as good as I remembered it, though I'd consider it overpriced by a euro or two. A note on two specific complaints about dishes made by other reviewers: 1)the dish with the fried egg is Nasi Goreng, and I think the fried egg needs to be cooked very soft so that the yolk is sufficiently liquid to be mixed into the rice. 2)The noodles that come with the five spice chicken are cooked, they're fried until crispy, which is why they might have seemed like uncooked dried noodles to you.

The Exchange Restaurant and Cocktail Bar

The Exchange Restaurant and Cocktail Bar

The Sunday brunch is quite a thing to experience, and worth the money for the sheer decadence of having oysters and champagne for breakfast, but I only had dinner there for the first time this weekend. My selection of starters was excellent, the scallops in particular were delicious. Main course was pork loin, kidney and liver which was spectacularly good. I finished with a trio of Brulees which was also wonderful. Service was attentive and polite, but the delay between courses was far too long. The food is good but expensive, and I have to say that even given the very high quality, the prices are a little high. I would expect something with a little more dazzle for the kind of money I was paying. Nonetheless, a very enjoyable experience, and significantly better from any other hotel restaurant in town.
