Quay 16 @ MV Cill AirnePosted on 14 January 2012
In spite of being a little late for our booking we were left in peace to have a glass of wine at the bar before going to our table. The menu offered two courses for €20 so my friend chose sea trout and I went for the fillet steak (which set me back an extra €7) The trout looked perfectly cooked and came with pureed swede (which I swiped most of - beautiful!) and potatoes. My steak was tender and cooked as required, but the bed of mash it was resting on was dried up and unattractive. We shared an good selection of cheese for dessert. The service was very friendly but dwindled halfway through the evening as a party of thirty other diners absorbed all the attention of the staff. The unusual setting of the restaurant makes it worth a visit, but it seems to be more geared towards large groups than couples.

The Larder Cafe RestaurantPosted on 13 October 2011
We arrived here on spec on a Saturday night and, though they couldn't seat us immediately, we were promised a table if we came back in twenty minutes. We were seated straight away on our return and the service was prompt and pleasant all evening. For a shared starter we had the mysterious Dukkah - spicy chopped nuts that were served with bread, oil and olives. It wasn't clear how the nuts were meant to be eaten, as they were too chunky to use as a dip yet too fine to eat with your fingers. For my main course I chose duck breast with potato and watercress cake. The flavours were good but the whole dish was overcooked, making the duck quite rubbery and the cake dry. My companion muttered that his lamb shank was overcooked too, and under-seasoned (which it was) though it was obviously good quality meat. The food is reasonable value, though charging the same price for penne with sundried tomatoes as for duck seems a bit cheeky. It's a promising place but it seems that someone in the kitchen is just not interested enough to make this really work.

Carluccio's CaffePosted on 30 September 2011
We were rushing and had just 40 mins to get a square meal - at Carluccio's we had a table and a menu in our hands within 3 mins of coming in. I chose the fettucce with wild boar ragu - richly flavoured but not heavy. My sister went for funghi pasta with a beautiful range of mushrooms. Together with a glass of wine each, the ideal quick meal. The service was hardly full of charm but very efficient - exactly what we wanted.

OdessaPosted on 01 September 2010
I've always had a soft spot for Odessa but hadn't eaten there for more than three years. We were a large group and were accommodated comfortably and efficiently upstairs. The service throughout the evening was attentive and unfussy, but the food hardly lived up to this standard. I had the mozzarella salad to start - it was forgettable. Next I had the quorn quesadillas. This meal lacked any depth of flavour and was stodgy and unappealing. I tasted my friend's Vietnamese chicken salad which had a strong and quite unpleasant dressing. My other neighbour was the luckiest - the spinach tartlet was really very nice, light and crumbly. Too late to reorder, alas, and I wouldn't be inclined to go back just for that!

The Dining RoomPosted on 02 July 2010
This was a great dining experience. We started well with some cocktails at the bar before being shown to our table. We chose from the 25 euro menu which was excellent value, both for the quality of the food offered and the professional service. I had a green salad which was beautifully fresh and perfectly dressed. Even still, I regretted not having my companion's choice: citrus smoked salmon. This had the most delicate flavour and a fine texture. His fish main course was apparently excellent; I had duck which was perfectly cooked. We decided to go for broke (in the dietary rather than financial sense) and have desert. The rice pudding was well-presented but a little unremarkable; the chocolate pot divine. How soon before we can go again?

The Restaurant @ Donnybrook FairPosted on 03 March 2010
This was our first visit here and we were impressed by the warmth and friendliness of the place. Our table was not well-positioned, but we were a last-minute booking so felt lucky to get a table at all, as the place was soon full. Our goat's cheese starters were tasty, though perhaps involved too many competing flavours. For main I had a delicious cassoulet - richly flavoured and well-balanced. My co-conspirator had fish pie, which strangely came with pastry and potato but was moist and full of fish and shellfish. Wine was recommended and proved excellent. We'll be back.
