The Step Inn Stone-Grill RestaurantPosted on 05 May 2010
I really enjoyed my first experience here. Unfortunately the next time (the one this review is about) was less impressive. When we booked this (for 2 people) we asked for a particular table. We were told it was a four seater and that they could not put 2 there unless it was quiet but they would note our request. We were a bit dismayed to find upon out arrival that 2 people were being seated there just before us and they were not joined by others.
However, this is nothing to do with the food!
Unfortunately it doesn't get much better. My wife felt her duck spring roll starters were very greasy but I did enjoy my garlic mushrooms.
The steak on a stone is really what this place is all about and we had both ordered the fillet.
The steak was excellent. But you cook that yourself. In effect all the chef had to do was chips and veg. He let himself down badly as we got roasted veg which was actually tinned peas and mush (nothing roasted about them). The chips were mediocre at best and were not hot in the middle.
The banoffee dessert was excellent and the service was good.
Would I return?? Well the steak on a stone might pull me back in but I will be hoping that this day was just an off day for the chef!!

Siam Thai (Dundrum)Posted on 31 March 2010
It was Thursday and it was busy. That says alot for a place. A table for 4 and some excellent food made for a good night. The only crib would be adding a couple of bottles of wine and some cocktails makes the bill lumpy enough.

Fire RestaurantPosted on 18 January 2009
18 of us landed here for a mates birthday party & it was the first time here for me. I was well impressed with the decor and atmosphere. You wouldn't think there's a recession in full swing as the place was hopping! With 18 of us ordering the staff were patient which is a really admirable trait and as mentioned by a previous reviewer there is no snobbiness with them. In fact they are a bit of craic. I was really impressed with the food and after the really tasty jumbo prawn starter I had the 10oz fillet. What a steak!!! I reckon it was one of the best steaks I've ever had (it's hard to get a med rare steak cooked, med rare!!!)....even though it was €40!!! I really enjoyed this meal and the only down side was that it cost €200 per couple including wine (but we did cover our mate & his wife). Alot for a meal out...but arguably one of the nicer meals I've ever had.

Talavera RestaurantPosted on 31 December 2008
There were 6 of us here and having read some previous reviews I was really looking forward to it. It was the Friday before Christmas and it was a little quiet but the maitre d made us feel right at home. The food was not bad but I can only say ok and given the price of it I was a little disappointed. I was waiting for the "wow this food is really tasty" but it never came. The Baileys & Irish coffees were served cool and only when we mentioned it did the staff say there was a problem with their machine. €440 for 6 of us with just one bottle of wine....unfortuntely for Talavera, I have had tastier food for less money....so i don't think I'll be back....there is a recession after all!!!

Indian SummerPosted on 18 December 2008
While I'm not a huge fan of Indian food, I do like this place. The staff are patient enough to go through the menu with you and explain what's what and if you want a dish "hotted" up or "milded" down they are more than happy to do that for you. The menu is a little limted but I think there's something for everyone there. The food is cracking!! Very enjoyable and with a glass of wine or two the evening will pass far too quickly. 8 people for starters, mains, some desserts (I know I know eyes bigger than our stomachs!!!) and a "few" bottles of wine and beer worked out at €120 per couple not inc tip! Not bad.....

Good World Chinese RestaurantPosted on 17 December 2008
I can't agree with some other reviewers who seem to go to a restaurant for its decor. Sure it's nice to have nice surroundings but I think the food is the most important bit. And the Good World has good food. Very tasty, a wide range and at a good price. I've been here a few times and I've always been happy with the service. The staff are polite and on the ball. I've never had a bad dish and always found the bill very acceptable. always reckon that Chinese food is good when I see Chinese/Asian people eating there....!!!! It's not flashy but I'd rather pay for the food than the decor!!

The Counter DundrumPosted on 17 December 2008
I've marked the atmosphere low but to be fair, the weather was Baltic outside and we were less than 10 feet from the front door. Every time the door opened we were blasted...so they really need an internal door here. But down to the most important bit...the food. The choice of sizes, meats & toppings is quite substantial. The burger was really nice....very tasty although the top bun did look a little greasy. Not really what I would expect for a gourmet style/priced burger. The chip portions are enough for two so don't order 1 each. The staff are good enough to mention that to you. Vanilla shake was very tasty and had real vanilla bean in it. For the 3 of us it was €69 for 3 burgers, 2 fries, 4 beers and 1 shake & tip! Not bad but it's still a burger at the end of the day. I'd go again tho.

The Fern House Cafe at Avoca KilmacanoguePosted on 17 December 2008
Avoca handweavers is all hustle and bustle at the best of times and Sunday afternoon was no different. It all added to the atmosphere when bringing our mother there for a birthday lunch. I was disappointed with my seabass starter (it seemed a little tough) but delighted with the organic beefburger main. Everyone else (9 others) was delighted with their food. The staff were excellent and the food was well timed. All for €85 per couple. Excellent value.

The Saddle RoomPosted on 04 April 2008
We had a chefs menu and wine tasting voucher to use here (a wedding gift) and it was fantastic. Seated in a booth the chef and sommelier paid us a visit and made us feel special. All 5....yes 5....courses were outstanding and even though I'm not a fan of fois gras, I did like this. A different glass of wine for each course was a perfect compliment to a perfect evening.

Bistro MartelloPosted on 04 April 2008
We went on a Sunday evening for an 8pm booking and it was nice and quiet....and pouring rain outside!!!! Starters were good although my dublin bay prawns had a little of dublin bay still in them as the meat was a little gritty. Quite tasty though. My wifes warm goats cheese tart was very nice. The sirloin main was better than I've had in some dearer restaurants and it was cooked correctly. The swordfish main was a bit bland although we did ask for the sauce on the side. Staff were great and if you wanted it they were full of chat or they would leave you to your own devices... €116 for 2 starters, mains, desserts and a bottle of wine. Not too shabby!!

Brasserie Sixty6Posted on 04 November 2007
A very middle of the road restaurant. The food is acceptable but it's nothing a half competent cook can't stir up at home. When they're busy be prepared to wait for your drinks as the staff seems to scurry about looking busy but actually doing very little. A very uninspired performance.

One Pico RestaurantPosted on 04 November 2007
We had a retirement bash for my father in law last night. The staff were excellent but I think the kitchen let us down with the time it took to get all the meals out. There was 35 of us but instead of serving a table a time they served one type of main. So the beef came out and it was about 5-10 mins before the person beside me got her fish! Trying not to be rude we all patiently waited to start until everyone had their food. Once started it was very tasty (although it had cooled a little). To be fair I wouldn't judge this restaurant on such a large party. It was my first time there and I will definitely return albeit in a smaller group!

Eatery 120Posted on 11 August 2007
What a really nice place to have a casual bite. We met a bunch of friends on a Saturday night here and had a tasty meal. The only complaint was they were a little slow bringing us the wine when we ran dry for the main course. I honestly believe it was a mix up. The food was great, the staff were spot on and the bill was oh so acceptable. You will enjoy this restaurant!! P.S. It does have quite a limited menu but there is something there to suit most tastes....

Diep le ShakerPosted on 08 February 2007
THE STAR RATING I'VE GIVEN SAYS IT ALL!!! Ok. I'll embellish a little. Yum Yum Yum. After reading a MenuPages review, which slated Diep, I was a little hesitant on my first visit there. The other reviewer must have been in a parallel dimension. This place, the staff, the food and the atmosphere were absolutely excellent. I had bbq prawns to start and double baked sea bass for main course. Both were outstanding. And contrary to another reviewer who recommended stopping by a chip shop on the way home to fill up, I found the portions filling (6'2" & 16 stone = my big appetite). For 4 people inc 3 €36 bottles of wine it was €300. Under €50 each for high quality food. I'll definitely go again.

Roly's BistroPosted on 13 December 2006
We brought our parents here for their 60th (both birthdays within 2 weeks of each other) last Sunday lunchtime! Our window was 12.30pm to 2.15pm. Plenty of time if everyone turns up on time. I unfortunately have a lazy brother and it was 1.15 before the food was ordered. No matter. The (head?) waiter, a Scottish guy, was brilliant, as were all the staff. Very professional and courteous, he put no pressure on us to wolf our food down and apologised for bringing the bill shortly after dessert, (@ 2.30pm!!), without asking, discreetly mentioning that they would require the table in 15 - 20 minutes. My fillet was spot on and my compliments to the chef who actually knows what medium-rare is!! Everyone, 9 of us, enjoyed our meals without reservation. My first visit to Roly's was great and I will recommend it to all.

Toscana (Dun Laoghaire)Posted on 13 December 2006
I had been before and although some time ago I was looking forward to returning. The starters, main and desserts were very tasty. The wine was easily sipped. The atmosphere was brilliant as they got the whole restaurant to sing happy birthday to a thoroughly embarrassed customer. A great laugh all round. They let themselves down on two points though. The first was a main course potato side that arrived, as the main course was finishing. Not much point at that stage!! The second and perhaps more disappointing was my fiancée’s dessert of apple and rhubarb (I think) crumble, which she was really looking forward to, was hot on the outside and stone cold in the middle. Very amateurish!! The staff were very apologetic and subtracted the dessert and added a complimentary drink. This however will not put me off returning as everyone can have a bad day and the good points of this restaurant far outweigh the......occasional hiccup!!
