Bear

Bear

Posted on 07 August 2012
Went to Bear on Friday night, and it was a pretty good experience. It was completely packed. I'm not really into sharing a table, but it wasn't a huge deal. It's a really noisy restaurant so don't go there for a cosy romantic evening or even a quiet chat with friends! The food was really good. We got starters/'small plates' to share, but didn't have our own plates, so it was a bit weird having to take a spoonful of fried chickpeas from a plate in the middle of the table, dropping them everywhere. We asked for our own plates, and were looked at a bit strangely and they brought us one. The waitress was great at explaining the different steaks, and we went for the feather steak. She said it didn't need sauce, and she was absolutely right. I'm glad we didn't order sauce because the meat was just delicious. I ordered the million dollar fries based on other reviews I've read. If you like gratin potatoes you'll love them, cos that's essentially what they are. They don't do desserts which I find a bit weird. Feels like another gimmick. We were the last to leave, with no pressure from the staff (although I'm sure they were dying for us to go). Not sure if I'd return (only because it's a bit trendy for my liking, some people would love that), but really enjoyed it!

Whitefriar Grill

Whitefriar Grill

Posted on 07 August 2012
Bought a Living Social voucher for Whitefriar grill and went along on a bank holiday Sunday. The restaurant was full so there was a great atmosphere. The service was great, but the food was the star. My husband's bone marrow starter was the highlight of the meal - it's the kind of dish it would never cross my mind to order, but when I tasted it I had serious food envy. Absolutely stunning - the kind of thing you'd expect in much much pricier restaurant! Also really pleasantly surprised by the quality of the €20 chenin blanc on the menu. Will definitely spread the word and will definitely go back. A gem of a place.

This review is for the Wine Cave downstairs (it should really have a separate entry because it's completely different, and people looking for a really fabulous dinner will not find it). I have been there for dinner about 5 times now and it has never failed to impress. I've never been at the weekend, but it is absolutely perfect for an after-work dinner and drinks. I've been in groups of 2, 4, and last night 7. The service is friendly, attentive and prompt, but really what needs to be talked about is the food. It is SO delicious. Absolutely bursting with flavour. I'm totally addicted to the colcannon (which I can't believe is under 7 euro) but I always sample all the other dishes at my table and I've yet to be disappointed. Even the side dishes (brocolli and potatoes we ordered last night) are incredible. Every time I suggest this place as a meeting place, no one has heard of it. But everyone comes out saying 'WOW'. I feel like it's the best kept secret in Dublin (so it's easy to get a table), but surely it won't stay that way for long...

Went for dinner with a friend. Was a bit put off by the atmosphere initially, as it felt very hipster-y and too try-hard, and I didn't really want to wait for a table (we were told we might not get one in the end). Luckily my friend convinced me to wait and we were given seats at the bar, which worked out perfectly. The food was delicious. Trust me when I say that whatever you order, you NEED to get the side order of corn. Unbelievable. Also really enjoyed the cocktails. I don't like tequila so ordered one that didn't have tequila, can't remember what it was called but it had chilli in it and was absolutely fabulous. The service was great, and we didn't even notice when it was 1am and they were all politely waiting for us to leave - no pressure had been applied! A great night.

La Mere Zou

La Mere Zou

Posted on 20 February 2012
Went for dinner in La Mere Zou on Saturday with my husband. Our third time there in the past two years, and it is his favourite restaurant. As always, the highlight was the food. Absolutely exquisite. The menu was unusual, but consistently delicious. We went for the 3 course meal for 35 euro, and got two bottles of delicious wine, the second of which was recommended by our very helpful waitress. Then, realising that we had overshot by ordering a second bottle, she suggested we re-cork it and take it home, which was a great idea. The crispy seabream was a highlight for me, as was our other main course (the ray wing). It's not cheap, which means we can never go regularly and it is always a 'treat', but that's not to say it's not good value. A must-visit for people who prioritise the quality of the food over all else.

Went for Sunday brunch with a group of about seven. The place was pretty packed. The service was a total mess. After our initial order, anything else we needed we had to ask for numerous times. There were quite a few mistakes when the food came but everything took so long we didn't bother changing anything! The food was fine but not amazing. I got french toast which was a pretty small portion, with hardly any maple syrup (and getting a bit more took ages). Quite a stressful experience all in all and I wouldn't go back. Frankly with so many good restaurants in Ranelagh I can't see them get away with this for much longer.

KC Peaches

KC Peaches

This review is for the Wine Cave (downstairs in KC Peaches) but I didn't see a separate entry for it so I'm just putting it here. We popped in here last night after some late night shopping, not really expecting much, and were completely blown away by the food. Judging by the prices (between 8 and 12 euro for most dishes) we assumed they were going to be small portions so we ordered three dishes between two of us - the colcannon, the pork medallion, and the butterbean and chorizo salad (I think it was called salad, but it was more like a 'bake'). The food took ages, and we wondered what was going on. The waiter then apologised stating a 'failure of communication' with the kitchen. I liked the honesty! He compensated us with some freebies, which was really nice. When the food arrived, we literally couldn't get over how delicious it was. We eat out regularly and I haven't tasted anything that good in years - just incredible combinations of flavours. We spent most of the meal talking about the meal! I doubt anything we ate was healthy (too delicious for that), but it was a treat. And the portions were big too - one each would have been more than enough. I doubt that we were lucky enough to pick the three most fabulous dishes on the menu (I couldn't even pick a favourite they were all so good), so I look forward to going back to try everything else! Main highlight was the food, but the service was also good - despite the delay with the food we felt well looked after and well compensated. Thanks!

We booked the Opium room for our work Christmas party, and we couldn't be happier with our choice. Having the room to ourselves was fantastic. It's a beautiful room, and we felt very relaxed and decadent laid out on cushions surrounded by draped fabric! We ordered a selection of menus in advance (without consulting with the group), which worked out really well. Everyone got to taste everything, and everyone really enjoyed digging in to all the shared plates. The food was absolutely fantastic. Top-notch. We ordered about half vegetarian, and even the meat-eaters loved the veggie stuff. And the quantities were really generous. The highlight of the night, however, was definitely the staff. They were so good humoured, loads of fun, and created a really festive atmosphere. Even though we stayed until the wee hours, we never felt rushed and they never got impatient with us. They even offered to play our own music for us when one of us produced an MP3 player! Everyone agreed it was our best Christmas party yet. I can't even think of a single negative. We had originally booked 21 people, but only 15 came in the end. I would say that if 21 had come we would probably have been quite uncomfortable, but with only 15 of us it was perfect (and we probably could have comfortably squeezed in two more)

Lamb Cutlets with Garlic, Lemon and Paprika

Why not make up a large quantity of this marinade in advance – it is wonderful with cutlets and would also work well with leg steaks or loin chops. The longer you marinate the meat for, the better the flavour!
