Red Restaurant @ JJ Gannons HotelPosted on 07 July 2011
We had lunch here recently on our way home to westport from Galway. We found the food to be lovely, except the portion of chips is very small which was disappointing as i had a bowl to accompany a goats cheese salad. Coffee and crumble were delicious and overall Gannons pub for lunch is worth making a stop for

Miss Wong - OldPosted on 13 June 2010
Went here for the first time on this Bank Holiday Sunday - the restaurant was packed so we took that as a sign that it would be good. It was really awful. My husband ordered the smoked chicken to start - it was dried out and with no sauce to accompany it. I ordered the vegetable spring rolls and these were not a lot better. We had chicken satay and vegetable and tofu satay for our mains - there wasn't a peanuut in sight in the sauce - the sauce could have been a black bean sauce or any other sauce for that matter - but it didn't taste at all like a satay. Mine came with lots of mushrooms which I'd specifically asked not to be put in it. The waitress threw her eyes up when I mentioned it to her when she came around to see if all was okay. She tried to grab the plate off the table saying she would get me a fresh one. I refused to give it to her as i'd separated the mushrooms to one side. She then proceeded to spoon them off the plate that I was eating from for me (I felt like a child at this point!) and within five minuted rushed back, took my plate from me and gave me a whole new bowl of food without the mushrooms. I know she was only trying to be helpful and it would've been great if the food was great...but it was brutal. Tasteless and way too pricey. Will never go past Miss Wong's doors again

Green NineteenPosted on 18 March 2010
A group of10 of us went here last Sunday and all really enjoyed it. Several of the group had the fish and chips which they loved. The mushroom starter was divine. My salad was a little disappointing. I'd been in the week before for lunch and had the veg burrito and chips which was really tasty. The goats chees, pear and walnut salad wasn't the best which surprised me - seriously lacking in pear and very few lettuce leaves. I'd ordered the main course salad and this looked more like a starter. I had to order some bread to fill up on as I was still hungry after the salad.
I would say though why is it necessary to add a "discretionary" 10% service charge for groups of six or more?? It really isn't discretionary at all as your bill comes with it added on...

La Dolce Vita Wine BarPosted on 13 February 2010
We came in here on a cold night and received the warmest of welcomes. We had a glass each of a 2003 Italian which at 7.50 a glass was good value as it was excellent. We also shared a cheese and meat plate for €15 - the bread was a little sparse but the owners were happy to replenish the basket when we asked for some more. Although we were the only two people in here at 10pm the wine bar has only been open for just under two months, so hoepfully night times will get busier for them as it is cosy and friendly

40Foot Bar&Grill;Posted on 08 February 2010
We took seats by the window for our lunch here and the view was beautiful, but unfortunately this is as much as I can say in favoiur of the 40 foot. We ordered the fish and chips and because there was nothing except the mushroom soup for vegetarians, I asked for the ploughmans cheese sanfdwich and asked if I could have it on brown bread. The waitress looked very confused and came back and said no, that the chef had said this wasn't possible. We were about to leave and go somewhere else when my husband noticed on the menu that there were prawn sanwiches on brown and asked why it wouldn't bepossible to do a cheese sandwich on brown aswell. The waitress went back to the chef and he agreed that he could do this. It's a shame we didn't go somewhere else - when the food came the fish was served with approximately 5 chips! The cost of this dish was €15 which was absolutely ridiculous. My sandwich was served with two chunks of very hard, dry brown bread and was the worst excuse for a sandwich that I had ever seen. As nice as the view was we won't ever be returning for food to the 40 foot.....

Bobo's Gourmet Burgers (Wexford St)Posted on 21 November 2009
I've put an approximate date of our visit here as I dont remember the exact date, but myslef and my husband went here for late lunch one day as he loves it and I hadn't been here before. We were hugely disappointed on this particular visit. The staff were totally preoccupied as there was a food inspector on the premises and as a result diners were largely ignored. We ordered chunky chips and we got skinny which we didnt like - if you like fast food chips you'll like them, but I don't. Prices for a small bowl of chips with a sauce topping is extortionate. Wouldn't dream of eating here again

Brasserie Sixty6Posted on 21 November 2009
We went here for a quick bute to eat one evening before going to a gig in the Olympia. There wasn't much of an atmosphere when we got there as it was early but we had the seat in the window which was nice. We ordered from the early bird and the staff were very pleasant when I asked if they had any vegetarian options. I chose a pasta dish which was very nice and we had a lovely bottle of wine. We were brought some delicious bread while we were waiting. Deserts were disappointing though. The staff were friendly and the place began to fill up as we were leaving which resulted in a lovely buzzy atmosphere. Would definitely go back

Tamara RestaurantPosted on 22 April 2009
We have eaten in Tamara's several times over the last year and on every occasio the food has been fantastic - there's never a crumb left on any of our plates.
Being vegetarian I find they have a really good choice and their tofu pad thai is delicious and all of the vegetables used are so fresh.
Unnlike others I think the pace of the service is just right. The staff are always wonderful. It's just a great place to eat with a group. Would really recommend it.

The Dining RoomPosted on 22 April 2009
A group of us ate here recently and were really looking forward to the experience, however we were really disappointed on several levels.
On booking for the group we found the staff really helpful. We asked if we could avail of the set menu and despite the fact that it was a saturday night they kindly offered us this. Because of the great service we received on the telephone at booking stage we expected this to carry over into the restaurant itself.
When we arrived the restuarant was almost empty but this was not really an issue as there was a big group of us. It filled up a little more as the evening went on. The starters arrived out quite quickly and were okay. Myself and several others had the beetroot salad which was tasty enough, but the mains is where the restaurant really fell down. I had the risotto which was a tiny serving - more like a starter than a main. Another of the group had the steak and it came out cold and dripping with blood. When we eventually caught the attention of the waitor the member of the group asked for something else to replace the steak which meant he was eating his main course on his own as we had all finished ours. Other people within the group had chicken which they said was just okay - nothing special.
Overall there was a feeling when we left the restaurant having paid a bill of almost 600 euros that none of us would be inclined to ever go back. We may have received the set menu for 30 euros but the food just did not meet any of our expectations of Balzac. It was a really disappointing start to a night out to celebrate my Mother's 70th Birthday, and one that none of will be repeating on any other occasion.

The Ivy Brasserie (Dunboyne Castle Hotel)Posted on 17 November 2008
We went for an overnight stay in the Dunboyne castle recently. The staff in the Hotel and Restaurant were very welcoming and helpful, I chose not to have a starter and they brought out a lovely selection of fresh bread which was gorgeous. I had a pumpkin risotto which made change as so many hotels still don't know how to feed a vegetarian who likes her food! My husband had a steak which he said was lovely and very big. The side of veg was nicely cooked - sugarsnap peas were delicious. Dessert was a disappointment though. We both ordered icecream which was plain enough and poor presentation. We had seen the ice cream coming out to other diners during the night and the way it was presented was lovely - ours consisted of three balls of icecream which had begun to melt together in a bowl - I felt like I was four years old all over again.... Despite the dessert the rest of the meal was good.

La Maison DonatelloPosted on 21 March 2008
The last time I was here was to meet two friends for our Christmas get together in December. The place was quiet enough but the food was good. It IS overpriced and I think the reason they can afford to do this is because there is no other Italian restaurant in Maynoot - not one that I know of anyway. Service is attentive and it's still a nice enough place to eat, if a little too expensive

Fat FreddysPosted on 21 March 2008
Have been eating here for many years when in Galway. When myself and my husband went here last week was a bit disappointed - the place looks jaded and the price for a simple enough Pizza was extortionate we felt at 16euros - nothing very special about it for that price either. We started with nice salsa and guacamole with tortillas, but you wouldn't leave here stuffed on the portion sizes - disappointing. Will be trying another resturant next time we're in Galway and staying away from Fat Freddies unfortunately

IFI Cafe BarPosted on 25 June 2007
The best thing going for the IFI is the atmosphere. Their food is good enough, but the Manager is grumpy and does not respond well if there is a problem with your order.... it can actually make myself and my work colleagues reluctant to eat there at lunchtime

The food here is every bit as good as Govinda's in Aungier St, and the prices for some bizarre reason are cheaper! Staff are lovely as they are in Aungier Street. It’s really nice to have a good casual vegetarian dining option on this side of town.

El Bahia Moroccan RestaurantPosted on 25 June 2007
Went to El Bahia with a group of friends. I love Moroccan food and also love Morocco and was excited to eat in such a beautiful restaurant. It was very disappointing. Service was poor and our waiter was rude. The food was good, but I believe that part of going to a restaurant is about feeling comfortable and welcome. We were not made to feel either of these. It was overly expensive and we realised after we left that we had also been overcharged. Will not be returning.

The Turk's HeadPosted on 10 June 2007
This is an okay place to go for lunch. I've been here a couple of times recently with some work colleagues. There is a good selection, soup, paninis, chicken, fish, filled baked potatoes. On both occasions I've opted for the baked potato with coleslaw and cheese and a side salad which has been okay. A lot of their food I would think is deep fried, so maybe not the healthiest if that's what you are looking for.

The Yellow HousePosted on 10 June 2007
Nice bright fun pub on a sunny day. Myself, my Mum and my nephew were in recently one Sunday. We had lovely fluffy omelettes with chips. The one complaint I would have is that they don't have a children's menu and don't do half portions. My nephew of six, who has a good appetite had no real choice and the waitress suggested the cocktail sausage and chip platter which was enough to feed four! It was just too much for a child.

My husband and I have been here several times over the years for both a quiet meal together as well as for family celebrations. It really is a lovely restaurant. The food is great - fantastic selection of vegetarian dishes. The service is very good, and the atmosphere is fun. Don't know if they still do a Bring your own option, the last few times we were there they did which is cool.

Bijou BistroPosted on 10 June 2007
Bijou really is a little gem of a restaurant in Rathgar. Whether you eat upstairs in the Restaurant or downstairs in the more casual Bistro the food is always great and the service friendly .
On our last visit I had the most delicious Risotto with asparagus. The wine we had was recommended by our lovely waiter, and complimented the food beautifully. The only complaint I would have is that the cheese plate is very poor for the price...they should really be serving small chunks of cheese - instead it comes as thin slices.
