O'Brien Chop House 5.0 star review: Overall an excellent evening in the Chop house. The menu was quite limited ont eh evening we ate here. We were a group of five and so between us sampled most of the menu! We shared the meat plate to start which was nice and fairly run of the mill. Seasoned nicley with garlic flowers?! I had duck for main, which was slightly over cooked. It was served with seasonal veg and mash which was lovely but maybe could have had a little more imagination. Steak and fish were really good by all accounts, the fish special may have been the best dish. We tried both deserts which were epic! A chocolate pot and rhubarb panna cotta. Both were amazing. To sart we had a glass of rhubarb belini which is the nicest drink I have ever tried! I will try to recreate it! The athmosphere was great, it's very relaxed and has lots of charm. I will be back!

O'Brien Chop House 4.0 star review: Lovely old Victorian bar, with the restaurant in behind. Kind of lightly distressed country house atmosphere. Food was super, but I won't review in detail because it was a once-off menu. Their breads are very good. Service is excellent here, the training is evident.

Generally their menu is meat heavy, but cooked with a light hand. They source from a local butcher, who is top-notch, so their beef in particular is always very good. It is pricy, but worth it.

Good selection of bottled beers in the bar, micro-brewery and premiums. Sunday lunch menu looks very good too, will give that a whirl and report in due course.

A safe and solid recommendation.

O'Brien Chop House 2.5 star review: I had the goatscheese starter which was basically a big lump of goatscheese on a plate with a few slices of beetroot. I then had the risotto for main...it was more like a starter and was quite tasteless. It came with a side salad which consisted of a small bowel of lettuce leaves. My mother had the fishpie. The potato was very watery and there wasn't much fish in it. My dad had the monkfish which was nice but again the portion was tiny. Overall very disappointing and totally over-priced. Definitely won't be going back there.

O'Brien Chop House 5.0 star review: I attended the Foraging Day organised by O'Briens Chop House which included a coastal and woodland forage, 3 course lunch and a glass of wine. We met at 10AM and foraged until 2:30 at which time we brought back our collection to the chefs and they cooked us up a lunch. We had smoked haddock (smoked by the Chop House) with some of the wild salad leaves we had picked - Daisy Flower, wild mint, sea spinach.
Then we had a fillet of hake cooked in a butter sauce containing some of the smaller items we had collected.
Before lunch we tried some jams made by the Foragers - the fireweed jam was super!
Not to mention the blackberry leaf tea which was very refreshing.
All this was enjoyed with a glass of a great NZ Pinot Noir and closed out with a medley of desserts and delicious coffee! I will be back to try the lunch menu. A great experience all in!

O'Brien Chop House 5.0 star review: O’Brien Chop House is located on Main Street in Lismore (with plenty of free parking available on South Mall just around the corner). From the street, it just looks like an old fashioned pub shopfront, although in beautiful muted paint colours. Once you enter, you’re transported back to the pub your grandad used to drink in – it has been beautifully and sympathetically restored – and the restaurant proper is at the back, almost like a Tardis.

The manager seated us at a lovely table opposite the service hatch (all the better to see the kitchen with), set with pretty blue willow pattern plates. Two types of breads and a pat of Glenilen Farm butter arrived on a wooden plank to stave off the hunger pangs while we ordered from the €20 set menu. As usual we negotiated who was having what and sat back and watched the staff hard at work. The restaurant was booked solid with families and groups of friends having a convivial lunch and the kitchen staff were certainly under pressure but we never heard a raised voice, a broken plate or any sign of stress.

I ordered the Endive & herb salad with soft boiled egg, anchovies & parmesan while The Hubs chose the Skeaghanore duck rillettes with pickled vegetables to start. They were delicious - usually The Hubs would do anything to avoid anchovies but he kept stealing them from my plate. His Rillettes were absolutely perfect with the crunchy toast. Plates were rapidly emptied and we almost forgot we had main courses still to come...

This time around, the pork was mine - a pan-fried Ballyvolane House Saddleback chop with an apple & onion jam and a thyme sauce. The Hubs ordered the Supreme of Cappoquin chicken with mustard mash & a lemon cream sauce. We basically split the plates 50/50 because they were both equally gorgeous. They arrived with some local new potatoes and very tender greens.

At this stage, we admitted defeat - we were absolutely stuffed and couldn't manage dessert or even coffee. A stroll around the town and the beautiful St. Carthage's Cathedral was the o

O'Brien Chop House 4.0 star review: The ethos of the place is to have good quality food that isn't messed about with, and as such it delivers. Prices are a bit on the high side given that a decent home cook could produce equal standard. A few delays, but were explained and forewarned.

Overall perfectly happy, but would have felt better if the bill came in 10 per cent lower.

O'Brien Chop House 5.0 star review: We dropped in her last Sunday and first impressions were very good, the menu was very nice and the place had a nice buzz about it. My husband had the kidneys as a main and I had the hanger steak. I was warned that it come rare or rare to medium as it would be tough otherwise, it came as promised and both dishes were excellent. The choice of beers, including some local ones was really nice to see. I went for a look in the garden which was very pretty particularly in the sunshine. The staffs were very efficient and friendly and we would be back.

O'Brien Chop House 4.0 star review: Went here today with my little sis. We were expecting nothing as we had walked out earlier because the chalk board inside gave a very costly/bleak view of this place. When we got around to check out the lunch menu things started to look up! two courses for 22.50... and good choice. Because we had not reserved a table, we were made to wait at the bar, which would have been fine but for the man behind the bar. When we finally got some attention( not because the place was that busy, but because he was busy doing chores) he was surly and maybe rude. I got a glass of Voigner and sis had some orange. Bread, no water , was brought to the table and was fine. I started with ox tongue with horse radish. delish!! The mains were a typical roast lunch, with choice of lamb, beef or pork. The former two being chosen by our good selves. The beef was sevred with a most delicious yorkshire pud and gravy that was unbelievable. The spud were fantastic duck fat roastie and my god i could have eaten another four or five. The lamb, well it followed that everyhting else had been served on a block of wood, an so came the lamb, cooked perfectly on a bed of cabbage,on a chopping board! Sis went for dessert, a fantastic trifle, with a custard so good it might have beaten the spuds. The wine was good, a simple shiraz,no one gave any advice or suggestion. The price wasn't bad but at same time not good. The food is source locally and is delcious, some of the staff are phenomenal, so happy to help, some even running, one or two are miserable. It is so worth coming back here. I'll be writing the next review this time next week!

O'Brien Chop House 5.0 star review: Was in Dungarvan for the weekend and popped over to Lismore on Sunday and was delighted to discover O Briens. What a beautiful restaurant, really stylish space. I had lunch with some friends...a proper Sunday lunch...to start 'Everything in the garden soup' lots of peas, runner beans, spinach made with a really good stock , and for mains we opted for 'Roast Born Free Organic Chicken', this was served family style on a big wooden board, we were offered the option of carving it ourselves which we did, the chicken came with really good gravy, herby stuffing and a selection of garden veggies and new potatoes, family style service. It was a delicious feast, reminded me of Sunday lunch's from my childhood- without the fighting! I had mature cashel blue cheese with fruitcake for dessert - dont knock it until you try it! and the others had Eton Mess and Trifle. The restaurant was buzzing. Cant wait to go back!

Lamb Cutlets with Garlic, Lemon and Paprika

Why not make up a large quantity of this marinade in advance – it is wonderful with cutlets and would also work well with leg steaks or loin chops. The longer you marinate the meat for, the better the flavour!
