Just the one night in Kilkenny on our way back from Wexford, and nowhere booked for dinner. Checked out a number of restaurants, and liked the look of this one. What a find !! Lovely cosy atmosphere - very friendly welcome - very good service throughout - and all the food was terrific. We did the whole deal this time, with starters, mains, desserts, and irish coffees. This was very good food in a great location - definitely one to recommend (which we do now) and one to go back to again (which we will do on our next Kilkenny visit). Great restaurant - very well done !!

Ate here with a group of girls for a leaving party. There were 12 or 13 of us in total. Because we were such a large party we were seated upstairs right by the door to the kitchen, which was a bit cramped and doesn't have the same atmosphere as downstairs. We all ordered off the set menu which was slightly different to what was advertised on its website. I had the goats cheese for starter which was delicious. I chose pizza for main which I was very disappointed with. It was very bland. Most of the others who had ordered pizza agreed. For dessert I had ice cream which was nothing special. I have eaten here before however and thought everything was lovely but the main course really let it down that night. As for the service, it was good. Friendly and efficient.

Imagine the scene - Kilkenny on a winter's night( midweek), no idea where to eat and you come across Lautrec's. Well that happened to my wife and I and boy were we surprised by this hidden gem. Mind you there were only 2 tables occupied but that did not take away from the atmosphere. The service was both friendly and efficient, the menu was extensive and the food was fantastic. As we were the last of the diners to leave, there was no sense of being hurried, the owner and the chef joined us for a "chat". I would highly recommend this restaurant - go on give it a try the next time you are in Kilkenny. You will be pleasantly surprised

Another restaurant I often visit, I has a small menu but quite a nice choice of dishes on it. I find the early bird menu good value and there is no difference in the food quantity or quality. There is not a lot of space so booking is probably required. We normally go there for birthdays as the staff usually do something nice for the birthday boy/girl.

Had a very good night last Saturday! Have never been to this place before so was a little anxious as I was the one who invited a bunch of friends to give it a try. Service was superb from the moment we walked in trough the door till the moment we left! All staff extremely nice and helpful. Menu was ok, good variety, decent prices. Food on it's own would not make this place that attractive, but adding the beautiful interiors, nice staff - I'll be going back!

Myself and my boyfriend came here on Valentine's Day. Thankfully the place wasn't too busy and it was a very enjoyable evening. I choose the early bird menu, 2 course. For starters I had the soup of the day - parsnip soup, and the salmon for main course. Both were lovely. My boyfriend had the goat's cheese filo basket for starters which he devoured. He ordered steak for main course which was a little bit pinker than preferred. In hindsight he should have ordered it well done rather than medium. However, he still enjoyed it and ate it all. We were both full after this so no dessert was ordered. Service was excellent and I think the early bird menu is really good value for money and has a great selection. Overall, a very relaxing and pleasant experience.

i had a really lovely time here before christmas, a group of us went out for dinner to celebrate a friends birthday and although the weather probably made the restaurant a bit quiet the staff helped highten the experience with charm and excellent service. food was excellent i also had a few pints of the murphy's although being from kilkenny and the restaurant a stones throw from the brewery i was shocked they didn't serve the local tipple smithwicks, all the same the muprhy's was fantastic, reasonably priced i thought the food was well worth it in my opinion excelletn highy reecommend it and it won't be long until i will be back

It was a pleasant enough meal although no great bargain at 95 euro for 2 with wine. And, I didn't really get why they present themselves as a French-style brasserie as the menu is a mixture of various cuisines. My starter of haddock tart tasted slightly processed but my wife's mussels were very good. Her main of tortellini was also excellent, but I thought the skin on my lemon sole should have been crispier. We shared the bread and butter pudding with custard for dessert. What we actually got was a warm sponge with cream, but if they think that is a bread and butter pudding, good luck to them. It was a tasty pudding in fairness. We had Irish coffees as well & these were pretty poor. The service and general ambience were fine.

Really enjoyed our dinner here! They have a set menu all evening which includes a carafe of wine for 24.95 each and it was top notch. I had a ceasar salad with chicken and the wife had a mushroom dish on grilled bread, really tasty. I had a steak and she had the duck, we had 2 fruit crumble for dessert which went down well on a cold night. We went on a wednesday night so it wasn't that busy but there was a few in which added to the atmosphere. We will return.

Loved this restaurant. Although it was slightly cramped, the dim lighting and decor hit the fact that the couple next to our table where nearly sitting on our lap. The food was excellent. Mouth watering actually. Will definitely be back here again.

8 of us had dinner in Lautrecs on Saturday night. Place was hopping which is good to see these days. Table was ready and drinks were ordered within minutes. Wine list lttle bit limited but well priced and we settled on south african shiraz and pinot grigio. 2 of us here before rest were new. All really enjoyed the experience, I had panfried prawns to start and my wife had mussells in a cream sauce, had to ask for more bread to lapup the sauce. One of the guys ate kangaroo off the specials and enjoyed but got a slagging from the rest of the party! Mains were very good, had fillet steak and really enjoyed. There was good range of maincourses from lemon sole to chicken fajitas(arrived on a cast iron plate and was sizzlin so watch the clothes!!) and the monkfish and tiger prawn curry was delicous. 2 had desserts and as it was a birthday a dessert was given to the birthday girl with happy birthday written in chocolate and a sparkler - nice touch. Place was busy so good atmosphere and good music! Will be back...

Had an awful experience in Lautrecs. Two adults and two young kids, we arrived just as they were opening at five. There was just one other couple. waied for an age for soeone to take our order and eventually had to go to the bar to get attention. Early bird 19.95 for two courses, 24.95 for three. Food, when it came, after another age, was fair. I had salmon which was dry, companion liked duck. One kid had burger, the other plain pasta (not cheap at E6.50). We were finished for ages and there was nobody to be seen and again had to go to look for service. Asked for dessert menus and ordered on the spot. Again waited an age and asked if they could hurry with the desserts. Waited another ten minutes and then went to leave. It was 6.20. The only decent thing was the music, van the man and other old fashioned rock and trad. Toilets were clean. Went to bar to pay. Oh your desserts are just ready the waiter said. I can't wait I replied. Having parted with my money I said I was dsappointed with the service. "sorry about that" he said but there was no hint of apology in his tone. I was more disappointed with the attitude than the actual poor service. Anybody can have an off day. But he gave the impression that he valued our space more than our business. we won't be troubling Lautrecs again.

LUNCH: Stopped here for lunch on a rainy afternoon. The name of the restaurant was what attracted me so I was slightly dissapointed with the front of the restaurant which is rather canteen-like in my opinion. The walls were dotted with posters rather than quality prints of Lautrec's works. The front space held simple wooden tables with lightweight wooden & steel chairs. As it was lunchtime there was little atmosphere and with only one waitress the service was very slow. The food however was good. I had the penne with chicken, "sunnies", mushrooms, garlic, cream sauce - it was a tasty dish with ample chicken, sundried tomatoes etc. My guest had a large chicken caesar salad which again had plenty of chicken but he was trying to eat healthily and unfortunately the chicken was smothered in a coating of some sort. I'd hope at night the restaurant has a better atmosphere, more welcoming tables and good french music.

Four of us went for an Early Bird menu and the choice was good. the starters were good and the service was pleasant. one of the group had the Thai curry which wasn't spicy and the chicken seemed to have been left a while. She didn't want to make a fuss she just left it there - but I was amazed that a full plate of food wasn't commented on when the table was cleared. the restaurant wasn't that busy as it was early but it was pretty cold so wear a jumper. Overall the rest of the food was very good and I'm sure the meal would have been replaced if asked. Just one final note there are a number of places in Kilkenny doing a 3 course early bird for two with a bottle of wine for 50 - so 25 euro for three courses is not competitive.

We were a party of 8 on a Saturday night in Kilkenny & chose Lautrecs on the basis of availability, suitability to all palates & price. We were a little late in arriving, but had called in advance & there didn't seem to be any problem. We were given a table upstairs that felt a little on the tight side & given our menus. Staff seemed to be stretched to their limit for the duration of our stay & it took some time for our orders to be taken. 2 of our party decided to share a starter &, even though they had asked that it come at the same time as the mains, this didn't happen & the rest of us were delayed by this. When the food arrived, it looked lovely, but there was no delicacy in the manner which it was fired down in front of you. An omission of spinach on my pizza attracted a look of frustration when it was pointed out, and there was no apology, the plate was just whisked away. Thankfully, I didn't have long to wait & we tucked in. Most were happy with the food, but I did notice leftovers on the steakeater's plate and she said it was gristle. Yuck. We chose a Montepulciano D'Abruzzo wine, which was listed as 2005/06, but when the bottle was brought to the table it was a 2008 vintage. When this was pointed out, no explanation or resolution was offered. The question of which desserts were suitable for vegetarians was received with a quizzical expression & an apparent lack of understanding until a request was made to check with the kitchen for the answer. Creme brulee was the popular choice for us; it had a nice taste & a brilliant crunchy top, but was too liquid in consistency underneath for my liking. A selection of teas - 3 of which were incorrect - finished off our meal & employees were cleaning around us as we left at about 11pm, which didn't impress me. No-one said 'Thank you' or 'Goodbye' as we left and I got the impression that they were glad to see the back of us! Perhaps we caught them on a bad night...

Visited Lautrec's on a cold nights but the visit was well worth braving the elements for. As it was Sunday we decided we would avail of the early bird menu. I had a delicious Caeser Salad, followed by a rib eye steak which was divine. My husband had the mushrooms and the Salmon and it was also delicious. We had a lovely wine with the meal and shared the tastiest baread and butter pudding I have ever tasted. The only fly in the ointment was that there were a table of revellers sitting behind us and they were in extreamly high spirits so there was no whispering sweet nothings into each others ears but that was in way the fault of the lovely staff of Lautrecs.

Early bird prices without the compromise on quality, choice or portion size...so much so that we decided to stop at the 2course offer although the 3course menu had drawn us in! Delicious! loved the mushroom ciabatta- a meal in itself and oh so tasty! two very satisfied diners- great flavours.....and the side of veg came with the main course (thankfully none of the usual 3/4€ extra!)

Efficient and friendly service with some very nice food. The bruschetta starters were a bit pizza-y for my liking but the blacken cajun salmon was very good. Make sure not to sit too close to the door, because the draft will freeze you.

Lautrecs definitely offers one of the best early birds in town. Delicious bruschetta to start, cajun salmon for main and a coffee.all for 23euro. this isn't like other early birds which tend to offer sub-standard food to match the cheap price.this is top notch without the top end prices. great wine list too.
