This is a really cosy little restaurant with beautiful food. The staff are pleasant and the restaurant offers a rewards card which includes a free main course on your birthday every year. The early bird is great value are there are good vegetarian options. Food is a little pricey but is worth it.

My fiancé and I came here at the start of April to celebrate my birthday. As we have the loyalty card we got a free main course. The last time I came here was only a few days beforehand so I knew that if I wanted to finish my dessert I would have to skip starters so neither I nor my fiancé chose a starter. We were a litte bit hungry though so we were hppy when they came with a selection of bread while we waited for our main course. We also ordered a bottle of rosé which was light and refreshing. I chose the early bird menu and ordered the chicken as a main course and the chocolate brownie for dessert. Both were very filling. My fiancé ordered the steak for his main course and the sticky toffee pudding for dessert. We both enjoyed everything we ate. There were no problems to change the dishes slightly e.g. to have different vegetables or to have the potatoes mashed rather than baby potatoes. Staff were very efficient. We were not rushed during our meal nor were we left waiting for a long time to be served. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for both lunch and evening meals. My advice is to make sure that you book a table to avoid being disappointed as sometimes they can be rather busy (especially at lunch time). Also I would recommend getting the loyalty card as we got steak for free (due to it being my birthday)! It is a very good reward system.

We were told that if you were ever in Kilkenny, you must go to Cafe Sol. Well we did that and we do not regret it. As it was a Friday night, the place was packed and we were there at the second sitting so I think that says it all.Allowing for the fact that it was busy, the service did not suffer at all. My wife had Goat's cheese in filo pastry which she is still raving about and I had pork starter - unusual but very tasty. Main course - sea bass for my wife and chicken for myself - superb with no room for deserts. All of this plus wine at a relatively reasonable price but we are now looking forward to our next trip to Kilkenny.

Had a great experience in Cafe Sol on a recent trip to Kilkenny. Great choice on menu for both day time and night time. Pork belly and Indian chicken were very tasty and to follow the best sticky toffee pud. Reasonably priced and very pleasant staff. Will be back.

I love this restaurant. It is one of the best dining experiences I had. Whether lunch or dinner it never fails to offer quality food, ambience, service, sophistication yet with simple style, and an informal but classy air. My last visit was at lunch time with another female companion. Could not fault it even on our hundreth or so visit. I had the wild mushroom pasta with basil cream and my dining partner had the fish cakes. Both impeccable, my dish was creamy but light and well portioned, the flavour of wild mushroom being one I taste still. I love the changing specials at lunch and a fail safe regular menu, its viva la diference yet they do not forget the old favourites that mouth wateringly bring return custom. Also staff are friendly and always accomodating, they changed my friends side salad to baby potatoes on request without extra cost. I could write on but I think you get the picture, one of the best restaurants around.

I went here with my mother and had a very enjoyable experience. There was a nice buzz for a tuesday evening. Busy enough for you to feel comfortable. The menu was a set menu of three courses for €27, which offered a great variety. The food was presented beautifully and was absolutely delicious. And the staff were fantastic. I'd go back in a heartbeat....

My husband and I ate at Cafe Sol in William St. Kilkenny primarily based on the reviews on Menupages and we were not left disappointed. The atmosphere in the restaurant felt very cosmopolitan and modern without being too much so. Our waiter was friendly and advised against ordering side dishes as the mains are quite generous, a pleasant change for a restaurant not to push extra dishes. He also advised well on the wine. I had a delicious humous and homemade tortilla starter, following on with the cous cous theme by having seared cod on a bed of cous cous, both of which were delicious. My husband had a sausage-meat terrine for starters which he assures me was a lot more tasty than possibly it sounds. For his main course, he had a Kilkenny rib-eye steak which looked and tasted great. We shared a dessert of warm brownie with vanilla bean ice-cream. For wine, I had a couple of glasses of Gabriella 2008 Pinot Grigio and my husband had a Simonsig Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon. Both were perfect for our chosen food - with a couple of good strong coffees also, the evening was very enjoyable, and by Irish standards was very good value at €75.

This restaurant was soooo good we ate there twice! The early bird offer of three courses for €27 is really good value for money as the quality of ingredients, the service, the presentation and utter deliciousness of the foods made it a joy to experience. It's informal inside and there's modern artwork on the walls (some for sale), the music is eclectic and unintrusive (some french, funk, jazz, easy listening), the tables are dressed in white, and the room's light & airy. The food - wow, seriously, wow. The trout paté was light as a mousse, special starters like blue cheese bruschetta with chorizo (yum), sausage loaf thingy (wrapped in parma ham, yum yum), special mains of hake were plentiful, fresh, unusually dressed (eg homemade lentil pesto, pickled fennel, pumpkin seed risotto) the rack of lamb was droppin off the bones (and resutled in much finger licking), the chocolate tart is for serious chocolate lovers, it was utterly scrumptious; the rhubarb bakewell, espresso sponge - everything was grrreat. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to all and sundry but not if you're looking for traditional irish food & music, it's much too cosmo for that!

Had dinner her with 11 friends. We had the early bird which was good value. Service was very good. Food and wine were also lovely. I had the goats cheese salad to start-delicious and the free range chicken which again was very tasty. Dessert menu was very disappointing and theis was the general feeling from 12 girls. Atmosphere was also only ok. Restaurany very quiet- would be pretty empty except for our party. Only fault- we were left with our empty dinner plates for ages but i will return.

I love Cafe Sol, always been an auld relaible that will never let you down, it was very busy on Frriday night and the food and atmosphere were as good as ever. I'll be back again soon, just like I have been again and again over the years. Saw they have a good value early bird during the week which I'm well interested in trying.

came for a quick lunch and to meet with a friend! The man serving us was quite ignorant as we didn't order straight away as i had not seen a menu! once i had ordered i was given the wrong thing however it was another girl that was sent to the table! she was nicer which helped the situation! food was ok but nothing worth returning for!

Great food, lovely atmosphere, always busy. The early brid is great for only €27.50, I had the lamb cutlets which were excellent, service was a little slow however, but that is the only fault I could find and they were very busy.

had dinner here Sat night with a group of foodie friends & the meal overall was very good. would recommend it. all the fish dishes were excellent, esp the brill. the duck starter was overcook for my taste but apart from this everything else was good. They make good apple crumble & for the chocolate fans the brownie got a good review. it is expensive but everything in Kilkenny seems to be expensive even more so than Dublin

Eat dinner here on saturday night and overall i was impressed. Had the piced tomato soup to start with, which was lovely and just the right consistency, then i had the steak to main, this was only ok, the cut was quite skinny and fatty and it was served with a red onion marmalade which i didnt think complimented it too well. Finished off with the chocolate brownie for desert which was very nice. Overall would recommend this restaurant as perhaps i was just unlucky with my main.

Was on a lads weekend away and 15 of us visited this restaurant. The service was excellent, you can imagine trying to keep 15 lads relatively quiet...i was cringing at point but no complaint was made. Most had fillet steaks which were very tender and cooked perfectly but i thought a little pricey at €29, that matches some of the best restaurants in Dublin. I hurried the lads out as quickly as I could and would love to return!

I have never been here for dinner but the lunch is really nice! The chicken wrap is lovely and there is a nice buzz around the place. You may have to wait a few minutes for a table but its worth it.

Wery disappointed with this restaurant. We went on a Thursday night and were the only two people there. It had no atmosphere, no ambience. The food was only OK. We had starter and main course each, shared a bottle of wine and the whole meal was finished in an hour. I was never so rushed eating a meal in my life and we will not be returning again.

Locals queuing for a table at lunch is recommendation enough. This nearly rates as my best meal in last ten years (a Spot currently held by Porthminster Beach Cafe Cornwall). Food was excellent and the young staff were professional and knowledgeable - they recommended a mix and match from two menu items that was superb. My wife who is veggie loved it equally. My advice - go there!
