We loved this restaurant. The atmosphere was relaxed and we were well looked after by staff. We both had mussels to start, fresh, plentiful and succulent accompanied by some tasty breads. For main I had the hake, very tasty and my partner had the steak which he enjoyed. Desserts of ice-cream and meringue, probably the weakest of the courses but sufficient nonetheless. All in all a pleasant dining experience that was good value. Would definitely go back

Walk-in diners are always difficult for restaurants to manage, but you'd expect that a well-recommended restuarant would be able to cater for two walk-ins on a rainy Sunday evening. Mitchells gave us a table and fed us, but we regretted our choice of restaurant. The food is reasonable. We ate the EUR24.95 set 3-course menu. My chowder was more than acceptable and the salmon and crab fishcake served to my wife was also good. She had hake for mains, also acceptable. My chicken cordon bleu, chosen on a whim, was bland and forgettable. The desserts were straightforward. After all, what can go wrong with vanilla ice cream with a touch of butterscotch sauce? The problems that we encountered are entirely under the control of the restaurant. First, the table we were offered was the worst that I have ever experienced in a restaurant. A two-cover table in the middle of two other two-cover tables is never good news. The fact that the gap between each table was very small compounded the difficulty, unless you like listening to the conversations of the couples on either side. We took the table because we got a strong hint that it was the last on offer. As it turned out, this wasn't true and one six-cover table remained unfilled for all the time we were there. The next issue is the service. I could say that the food was thrown at us, but that would be an exaggeration. Service is delivered by a team that delivered a lack of "Irish" welcome in an Irish tourist destination. We felt that the servers must have been on a time and motion exercise designed to get guests through the meal as quickly as possible. Not good. So much so that I left the smallest possible tip that I felt I could. The last point is the way that tables are cleaned after guests leave. It would have been nice to see that more than a casual wipe of a cloth (clean or not) was used to prepare a table for the next set of guests. Not good all round...

Really enjoyed our meal here on Saturday night .It has all the combinations ,great food-decor-atmosphere. It essentially has Dublin prices ,charm of the West yet a colourful well heeled clientele .The wine menu is excellent and if you are a lover of great food ,look no further.Wish I was back in Cliften .

I went to this restaurant with some friends while on a weekend away in Connemara. The atmosphere is cheery and inviting. The service was prompt and friendly, and the food was fresh and tasty. I had a panini sandwich and chips, while others in my party sampled the seafood choices (mussels, fish pie, clam chowder) and all reports were positive. Will definitely return to Mitchell's if I'm ever in Clifden again.

If you want to experience top quality food at a very resonable price try Mitchells lunch time specials. The lunchtime menu is some what limited however what is on offer is cooked to perfection. I had Cod Scampi and my wife tried the fish and chips and we were not dissapointed as they were both very fresh. We asked if we could have hand made chips as it was apparent frozen were used at lunchtime, we were obliged with out any fuss and it was definately worth asking for. A good choice of wines were available which compimented the meal followed by a good selection of sweets which were very tempting and well worth the money. The experience has tempted us to try the evening menu within the next week as this was one of the best restaurants we have tried in England and Ireland so far. The staff know how to treat the customer properly and my only complaint is the Restaurant is closed for the winter.

Had the early bird menu here - good selection of about 5 starters & main courses and 2 different deserts for approx. €23. Portions were good sized - quality of the food was excellent (apart from the chips just needing another minute or two cooking time). I had the fish cake for starter, steak (perfectly cooked!) for mains and ice-cream for desert. Cappucinos were best I've had in a long time. Staff were very pleasant and attentive. I'll definitely go back next time I'm in town.

Despite checking the previous day that children were welcome and arriving well before 6pm as requested when arrived at the restaurant firstly the staff couldn't be bothered to come around from counter and greet me properly, then when i asked for a table for four they started to get a menu but were tapped by another member of staff and told there were no tables available despite the restaurant being half empty. Definitley do not cater for families and extremely rude!!!!!!!!

Our last visit to Mitchells before they closed for the season confirmed our belief that good restaruants provide excellent food consistantly. If you like seafood Mitchells is the place to go and Clifden can boast one of the best restaurants for many a mile. The service was very good, staff very friendly and the food was to die for. No wheelchair facilities unfortunatley so we cannot bring all of our friends! If you are on a budget try the lunchtime menu as prices are very keen yet the food remains top quality. We look forward to the Spring when Mitchells reopens.

Ate here with my husband, 2 children, Aunt and friend from France. Went in at 4pm. Got good table downstairs. They used to have crab claws in garlic butter as a starter on the a la carte menu, so I asked owner had they stopped doing them. He said thinks there are some from specials menu, so we got two whch we were superb along with mussels. My 5 year old loved them both and both my children wolfed down their fish & chips. Our mains were fab too. We got Sherpherds Pie done with lamb as it should be, cod & leek pie, fish & chips. We have eaten here for years and love it. Service was as great as ever and I could not recommend this place more highly. They introuduced their lunch/day menu until 6pm a few years ago and we think its great that our children can sample their food too.

Had high hopes when we reviewed the menu. They seated us in the upstairs area. Being a Sunday, the evening meal was being had by several families which had small children, which unfortunately took away from the atmosphere. Tried the clam chowder, but not a clam to be found! Another dissapointment. The main course of fish and beef was fine, but nothing special. For the price, the value was only on par. Service was both good and bad. Refilled water glasses and removed dishes from the table, but did not acquite themselves to ensuring we were satisfied with the meal. Perhaps they were overwhelmed by the half full restuarant! The real critique is that, given the chance, I would not return.

My wife and I went to Clifden for the October Bank Holiday weekend. We happened to come by this lovely restaurant by chance, and I must say it was one of the best experiences I have had in dining out! My wife and I both had fresh crab cakes to start served with a delicious sauce and a selection of delightful homemade breads. For the main course my wife had the monkfish served with an absolutely fabulous red pepper sauce. The monkfish itself was incredibly fresh which made it even more delicious! I had the fresh haddock served with mussels which too was outstandingly fresh and delicious. The desserts were all homemade and the service was outstanding. All in all a wonderful experience.

Ate lunch here last weekend. Service was quite brusque but the food was very tasty. Quite expensive for lunch, but nice for a treat.

Just returned from a lovely long weekend in Connemara, and enjoyed two lovely meals in Mitchell's. Overall, the food was fabulous - a big emphasis on fresh seafood, which was superb. Had divine crab claws in garlic and chilli butter on both nights, as the first night they were so delicious. On the first night, had a delightful main of haddock with mussels which came with a generous helping of very fresh vegetables. This was delicious. Had the catch of the day on the second night, which happened to be hake, served on a bed of colcannon. The fish was great, but it would have been nice to have had some vegetables with it, instead of the offered potatoes. Dessert on both nights was an amazing meringue confection - was so good I had it twice. Service was very good, highly recommend this little restaurant.

Mitchell's is always a pleasant experience and worth the trip to Clifden. The fish tastes incredibly fresh and is allowed to speak for itself rather than being smothered in lots of distracting sauces (although these too are usually first class). I have never ordered meat in Mitchells because of the excellent fish options. The atmosphere is great (downstairs is much nicer than the upstairs dining room)and the service is very friendly. All in all a great restaurant in my experience.
