Matt The Thresher Seafood Bar and Grill, City Centre South

Newly opened on Lower Pembroke Street, Matt the Thresher Seafood Bar & Grill is a welcome addition to the Dublin dining scene. A light-filled spacious restaurant now offers an attractive menu for day and night, with an emphasis on fresh fish and shellfish from the kitchen of Head Chef Stephen Caviston, of the reknowned Glasthule family. A sister restaurant to the award winning Birdhill original, Matt the Thresher is a family business. Welcoming fires, polished wood floors, a long marble bar and fresh shellfish piled high on crushed ice create an ambiance perfect for its Georgian surrounds. With 120 covers total, there’s a range of seating. Take a stool at the bar, leather armchair by the fire, or pick one of the many tables, seating groups of up to eight. At the rear of the bar, a feature art deco glass roof pours light onto a raised mezzanine level and grand piano, for live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Under the mezzanine a cosy book-lined nook is perfect for whiling away a few quiet hours. Matt the Thresher offers a range of menus throughout the day. A full all-day menu is complemented by a choice of two-course menus for either €19.95 or €25.00 and a Tapas Tasting menu, all served from 3pm, making for the perfect plate of food, whatever the time of day.

I came here having heard many good reviews about the establishment. Dublin has very few seafood restaurants for a coastal city and I was looking forward to my meal. The specials are the best options for a true representation of the restaurant. I chose the Mackerel in a chilli jam which was fresh and extremely enjoyable. The main problem I had was the amount of choices which were unavailable on the menu. It was bordering on ridiculous. I had a half portion of prawns from the starter section of the menu with the mackerel which also came with potatoes and salad. This came to a very reasonable 21 euro. The establishment was lovely and the Australian waiter was both helpful and knowledgeable. Service with his colleague was scattered to say the least.

Response:
I am delighted you enjoyed Matt the Thresher, our fresh Mackerel and the Dublin Bay Prawn Salad on your recent visit. I am sorry that you felt that there were an unacceptable amount of items unavailable on the menu. We have a very extensive Seafood menu, with a large range of freshly delivered fish on as Specials. On the date you dined with us we had along with our main menu the following fresh fish as specials - Fresh Mackerel, Haddock, Plaice, Hake, Monkfish and Turbot. But due to the nature of our business which is predominately fish based and highly perishable, we cannot always guarantee to have everything on the menu. It’s our policy is to have the freshest fish. We actually like to run out of fish as unlike like Meat, fish does not improve with age. Due to weather conditions (especially at this time of year), availability and delivery of fresh fish and shellfish from Kerry and West Cork (where we purchase a lot of our fresh fish from) can sometimes be uncertain. We certainly strive to have everything on the menu, but sometimes it’s just not possible. We now take delivery of fresh fish 7 days a week in order to keep up with demand for our Fresh Seafood. Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your recent experience at Matts, it’s very much appreciated. Head Chef Stephen Caviston, our Manager John and I meet each morning to discuss where we can improve our Food and Service for our customers. Sincerely, Jimmy Lyons.

As a party of four including an American, we thought Matt the Threshers would be ideal to experience Irish food. We ended up being very disappointed. Having been seated, we were informed there were no oysters or mussels. When we placed our order, we were informed that vegetables were not available, leaving one of our party to enjoy his steak with a side of chips and mash potatoes, for want of other options. The waitress than informed us there was no squid either. For a place referred to as a Seafood Bar and Grill, there was little evidence there of, and with our choice so limited, we did not enjoy our meal as much as we had hoped. As we left the restaurant, we noticed a local supermarket was still open. Surely such an oversight as a lack of vegetables could have been prevented.

Visited with daughter for a very late lunch. The room is really nice. Very bright with a bar in the centre. There is a seafood counter near the bar displaying the lovely fresh fish. We were given a table at the window, which is a lovely Georgian one, with shutters intact. Fire going in the fireplace beside us. The decor is modern not Georgian and it works. My daughter had the Fish Pie with a side of-potato salad. Pronounced very good. I could not resist an old favourite-Ploughman's Lunch. It did not have the traditional hard boiled egg and pickled Onion but the Cheese and Ham were generous and first rate. Service was slow and we had to send a reminder. However, apologies were made and food came promptly then. reasonable for location and standard of food.
