Very enjoyable meal here overall. We were given a nice booth-style table and I had mussels to start and a fillet steak for mains. Both were good but by far the star of the show was the winelist which features around 400 wines with some real gems in there like the ridge Cab from California which went with the steak beautifully. Vina Bujanda is another excellent red, a Spanish tempranillo and it's only 30 euros on this winelist which is more than fair. They will decant your wine here too without making a fuss. This place is ideal for a leisurely meal with good fresh food and sensational wines

We were a party of 2 adults & 2 children. Wasn't sure about bringing the children aged 9 & 14 here but needn't have worried. The staff were very welcoming & most accommodating. The food was lovely - small portions but very tasty. The duck salad starter was tasty but with just a few tiny shreds of duck!!The duo of pork was fabulous-melt in the mouth meat with lovely vegetables to accompany. We had the 3 course taster menu which was good value. The waiting staff was just excellent without any of the pomp or pretentiousness often associated with a restaurant of this calibre. I will return!!

Went here with husband on strong recommendation of a work colleague, who likened it to the quality of the White Gables. Overall, we were quite disappointed and underwhelmed. On a positive note, the setting and ambience of the restaurant is very nice, very modern and we were given a large window table even though there were only the two of us. The menu was really promising and there were plenty options to choose from. The food, however, was disappointing and, for what we got, overpriced. I had the turf smoked duck with foie gras for starter, followed by hake on a polenta cake for main and selection of homemade ice-cream for dessert. husband had rabbit croquettes to start, the fillet steak for main and chocolate study for puds. I'd ordered the fish course, wary that the duck might be a heavy / large starter but I needn't have worried - it comprised 5 tiny slivers of duck with a thimble of foie gras in pastry on the side; whilst it tasted nice, at €8.50 I felt it was not good value. the fish was fine although the polenta cake was greasy and bland, even with some little shrimp through it. Hubby's rabbit cakes were tasty and the steak was fine, if on the small side (again, not good value at €27.50). Our veg comprised some nice seasonal vegs but, strangely, a soggy, overdone "potato gratin", which was a few layers of sliced potatoes dripping in oil with the top layer hard and dry, not the creamy, cheesy dish we expected. The chocolate dessert was fine, nothing special, and the homemade ice-cream was tasteless and crumbly. With wine (a NZ sav blanc €33.50, our first choice was not available), a black coffee and a monte cristo coffee, our bill came to €118 for two, which we felt was very overpriced for what we received. Add in tip and taxis in and out of Barna, it turned out to be an expensive but unfulfilling experience.

The west restaurant in the 12 hotel is a beautifully cosy and elegant restaurant. Professional and most importantly, friendly staff are on hand. When they saw me dining on my own I was brought newspapers and wine magazines to peruse. What a great touch which I have never been offered before in any restaurant. 12 out of 12! To start i had Mackerel with pickled fennel and horseraddish cream to start which was simple and delicious the inhouse bakery bread selection was excellent and fresh ( not heated up in a microwave unlike some restaurants) I opted for the braised beef special. Wow! probably the most tender piece of meat I've had. The chef must have cooked it for a week! I finished of my meal with the cheese board and a tasting trio of desert wines and port. What a great idea and delicious also. A gem of a restaurant with a delightful atmosphere, friendly and attentive service and fabulous food prepared and presented by an accomplished chef. I ll be back.

I just cant fault this restaurant in a single way. 1. The food was truly amazing. As good as Michelin star joints in Dublin IMHO. Fish was divine and the steak was even better 2. The value was superb. 3. Service from a person who obviously loved his job and employer was warm, attentive and knowledgeable. 4. Ambiance and atmosphere were just right - relaxed, special and memorable. Overall I cant wait to return and will stay the weekend in the hotel (driving from Dublin) just for the experience. Well done to all. PS this is my first 5 star rating BTW.

I have eaten a number of times in this resturant over the years and thought it was top class. It's about a year since I was there so myself and two friends went along for a special birthday meal. I was totally disappointed. I would now rate the food as very expensive 'hotel food.' I had the seafood cake to start with. It was tough, tasteless and dry. Neither it nor the salad had any sauce whatsoever. My main meal was scallops. Fish was average but the sauce was bland. The vegetables were completely inadequate.Veg overcooked and limp and the potatoes hard. The steak was dry as was the boar and venison dish. There were no sauces to accompany them. Deserts were poor. Wine was overprices. The lowest came in at about E29. Overall my verdict is that everything was overpriced and of poor quality. Service was excellent.

I had dined in West about 9 months ago, and while it had been nice then, it had improved greatly on my more recent visit a couple of weeks ago and we had a really enjoyable dining experience. The atmosphere in the restaurant is lovely and it's cosy and comfortable with low lighting and candles. Service was friendly and efficient. We had a Kir Royale before our meal which was yummy, but served in an unusual glass - I would've preferred it to be served in a normal champagne flute but maybe that's just me and it's a small niggle. For starter I had the Irish Croque Madame which was really tasty with the poached egg cooked to perfection. I had feared it would be a very heavy starter but it was surprisingly light and very enjoyable. My partner had the black pudding starter and loved it. I had halibut for main course, which again was cooked beautifully. My partner proclaimed his 'braised beef' to be one of the tastiest beef dishes he has ever eaten - I had a taste of his and I had to agree!! We shared a delicious pecan pie for desert, which I thought was an unusual dessert for a restaurant, but it was very good! Overall we really enjoyed West and will definitely be back!

Like the previous review we had the seafood platter. To say we were disappointed would be a huge understatement. Smoked salmon which was overpowered by goats cheese. The seafood should be the greatest thing on the menu for this area and we regretted not having a steak. There is something missing from the atmosphere of this restaurant. We were staying in the hotel and decided to dine in the bar on the second night rather than eating here again. I would not recommend this restaurant as there are far better ways of spending your hard earned cash these days. Try the bar for really excellent food atmosphere and good service.

WEST is not a fine-dining experience and on our experience, contradicts its website assertion for preparation, presentation and respect for ingredients. The menu is totally uninspiring and lacks the detail and complexity that is expected from a professional kitchen at this level. The Seafood platter, a cornerstone of the local restaurant trade and a flagship of the area, is a classic example of this inadequacy: small mussels over-grilled and cemented into their shell by blue cheese; a carpaccio of salmon and pollock overpowered by salt; Clare Island (spelt incorrectly as Clair) smoked salmon with a large slice of goat’s cheese – David meets Goliath and a pairing that should never see a dining table in such gross form; A finger of cod, encased in a dry, spongy, cold batter, accompanied by a strange mix of sweet chilli sauce and a small dish of roughly-mashed, frozen peas. The worst, the escabeche of mackerel, worryingly lacked any acidity, was soft, mushy and quite simply, disgusting. A small cup of crab and lobster bisque was delicious and had real depth of flavour. The accompanying “vegetables” were the strangest seen in a very long time; two large, rectangular pots of coleslaw and potato salad, a dish of potato wedges and a plate with two large, agricultural dollops of mashed potato, and a scatter of courgette. The deserts; a medley of unusual ice cream (Sweet Potato, Pea and Mint and Treacle) and a Tiramisu were interesting and of reasonable quality. In essence, WEST demonstrated a complete lack of appreciation or understanding for Seafood, which is king in the local area. The fact that the obtrusive service was punctuated by problems with dishes and customers, at other tables, is testament to the fact that this restaurant has problems and is possibly living off a previous reputation. The uninspiring, simple and pedestrian menu and the lack of understanding for food and its presentation, leave it clear where the fundamental inadequacies lie.

We thought the food was lovely, except for the fishcake, which had a scallop in the centre, waste off a nice scallop. The trio of unusual ice creams were yummy, the treacle being my favorite! We had our (sleeping) 3 onth old son with us and were made very welcome none the less.

This restaurant is fantastic. The wine list and vast and great value. 12 houses wine by the glass and the full list accomadates all budgets. They are doing a fantastic deal at the moment 2 courses and a cocktail for 20 Euro or 3 courses and cocktail for 25. The food is of a very high standard and the seem to use very fresh ingredients. I will be raving about this restaurant for a long time to come.

Gorgeous restaurant, very fancy. Had the monkfish which was really good. Not a place to go if you just want "normal" food. Waiter was ok but his english wasnt the best so couldnt understand his answer to one of our questions. Definatly somewhere to bring that special someone.

Gorgeous restaurant in a really chic and happening place. Live music downstairs was great. The most amazing wine list I have ever come accross and I dine in the best restaurants world wide. Food was excellent as was the service. By no means stuffy or formal, just a great dining experience. They have the right formula and I will have to travel far and wide i'm sure to find something better.

Had a business meeting in Galway last week & my host took me here for dinner. Class place. Smooth style and excellent decor. The fixtures here are quality - you know somebody has put a lot of money & thought into the place. Staff & food wise - both top knotch. Had Lobster Ravioli for main course and it just melted in my mouth. Thoroughly enjoyed my evening. Will I go back - absolutely!
