i'd booked a table at Gallagher's Boxty House for this evening, but we were all so famished that we turned up early. Glad we did as they had a couple of guys providing musical entertainment from 5 - 6 and it was jolly nice I can tell you, to tap along (mainly in time), and sit back and relax with a bottle of wine. (Between two of us, not each!) Now, non of us are really big eaters and we were a little dubious about eating out as the times we have in the past we have wasted so much food. Gallagher's however, proved that if it's blummin good, you stuff yourself! male friend started with the potato cake which was very tasty, light and very moorish, whilst I had the Black Pudding and Bacon warm salad - truly scrumptious I can tell you. male friend decided on a "boxty" which, as far as I know is nothing like a real Irish Boxty .. it was, however, rather like an oatcake which parcelled up the most mouth watering beef - so tender it fell to pieces. Gorgeous. i chose Farmhouse Grill - 5oz sirloin steak, gammon steak, hand-linked pork and herb sausage, Clonakilty black pudding, grilled tomato, baked flat cap mushroom and choice of potatoes. In the end there was a bit of room left for me to have a proper Irish Coffee and for Mike to indulge his sweet taste in Brown Bread and Baileys Ice Cream .. with an extra shot of Baileys. What can I say? Mmmmmmmmmm

Myself and work colleagues had our Christmas lunch here. We really enjoyed it, the place was packed, great atmosphere. Staff very attentive and friendly. Nothing was any problem for them. The food was delicious and great great value for money. Would definately recommend this restaurant and will be back. Great for a group of friends night out.

Incredibly disappointed. I'm allergic to spinach - a weird one I know, but as soon as I eat it, I get really sick. I said this to my waitress upon ordering. However, my salmon and brown bread starter arrived with a salad garnish including spinach. This was sent back and arrived back out with salad removed. Main course was black pudding salad. Once again this arrived out with spinach, I told the waitress and she took it back to the chef who must have told her to say that the spinach leaf was a form of Rocket - Absolute rubbish, each time she spoke to me, she spoke with a rather loud voice so that all other diners could hear the conversation. I was so embarassed. My friend tasted the "rocket" and yes indeed, it was spinach. I told the waitress that I didn't want to eat it as I get very sick so she said she wouldn't charge me. I'd think not! When my party had paid the bill and were gathering our things, the waitress asked if I'd like a complimentary drink - it was very obvious we were leaving, so no... I didn't want to make the other 5 people sit there and watch me drink! Terrible - will never go again!!!

Very disappointing. We used to come here regularly as the food and service were excellent. We went in today and we really disliked everything. The service was bad and really NOT child friendly. It felt like they were annoyed to be serving clients. The food was less than average and overpriced. The char grilled meat dish we ate today had 1/3 of the meat it used to have in the past, but still the same price of 21euros, incredibly expensive for a kind of "Irish breakfast" we were served today. Two plates we ordered were not as described on the menu, they've put eggs instead of meat but we were told it has always been like this. Potatoes were old and tasted as molded. Will never go back again, real shame.

Ok, I knew this being into temple bar - I expected less value than else where but .... the 3 course meal for 25.5 euro (was 27 before the VAT reduction) may sound good but in reality is way over priced for what you get ... The coddle was missing everything expensive ( plenty of potatoes )- my wife's steack was good but nothing special - starters were tiny - I guess this is my fault as I kind of knew this was a tourist "trap" - I was warned but still went :-( ...

Visited this place tonight with my friend who's visiting from Dubai. She wanted to try somewhere 'Irish' so we decided to try this place. She had a salmon boxty, and I had a lamb one - a boxty is a potato type pancake. We were both quite impressed with our meals, and the service was fabulous. The place reminded me of my nana's kitchen years back! Atmosphere was good, most tables were full. Decent value too - and there's a set menu too for €25 if you're really hungry!

i love this restaurant. Last time I was here was on a very cold, miserable day in january and I ordered a bowl of the beef stew. Huge portion and proper comfort food. The corned beef, cabbage and potatoes with parsley sauce is gorgeous, as is their chocolate cake. The staff are always friendly and willing to help. Already trying to organise when I can go again. Love it

Whole place lacks atmosphere in general, its cramped you're made sit beside other people without been given the option to sit elsewhere even tho the place is half empty. Waiter was extremely rude, id go asfar as to say 'pig ignorant' he spoke out loud about customers who had annoyed him in earshot of other customers. Definetely wont be back!

It was cold, we were hungry, saw their early bird menu and price and said it looked good so went in. We were sat by the window, which added to the atmosphere a little, we were the only two in the place at that stage. By the time we were leaving, the place was packed. We ordered 2 glasses of house white wine, which was very much your middle of the road wine, nothing exciting. I had the chowder for starter, my friend had the stew. Both were lovely, and hit the spot, just the thing one would want on such a cold day. My American friend ordered the traditional fish and chips. Good size fish and lovely chunky chips but the mushy peas (served separately) looked like they were left exposed all day without being covered. The top layer was dry and had a crispy hard crush to dig through!! Somehow, I doubt this was part of the effect! Moving on! I ordered the fillet of salmon. I was so disappointed. 3 bits of salmon arrived folded into a pancake! Yes, it was literally a pancake folded in half with 3 bits of salmon inside and a splash of cream sauce with a dollop of mashed spud! This dish was not on the early bird menu, it was ordered off the diner menu...priced at 17.99! For this price, I expected to get a beautifully cooked full size fillet of salmon, not a sample wrapped in a sweet pancake drenched in sauce! For desert, we asked the waiter what culinary delights were on offer. Nothing appealed to us, so we decided on 2 Irish coffees. They were perfectly made, and certainly the best course of the 3! We felt we were being pushed out. Waiters cleaned our table about 4 times and constantly checked their watch for the time in front of us, reminding us to hurry up, drink up and get out! My American friend insisted in paying the bill, so I never actually got to see what the damage was, but whatever it was, it wasn’t worth it. I’ll never be back. Sorry.

Brought 7 visitors from Poland and Czech Republic to gallaghers as they were looking for a very Irish meal and it was close to their hotel. I was pleasantly surprised by the food as everyone seemed to enjoy the various traditional offerings though the stew was least favourite. The service was excellent and the atmosphere perfect for this type of entertaining.

Its a Tuesday night in Dublin, its bitterly cold and all you want is a meal of hearty food to warm you up. Where better than Gallaghers Boxty house in Temple Bar. From the outset you can see they are catering for tourists, its all very kitsch. The seating is made up of large dining tables which promote strangers to sit with one another, I guess it adds to the traditional sentiment of the restaurant. The menu we decided to go for was the 25 euro one which incorporates 3 courses, ( they say you must pick your courses from the items on the menu with the shamrock beside it, these are the courses included in the offer, but pretty much everything bar the steak has a shamrock beside) . My girlfriend went with the starter sized portion of the main Murphy's Stout Beef Stew, I decided to go with the Atlantic Seafood Chowder. Both dishes are served with Guinness Bread(The only Guinness related item on the menu, as Murphys seems to be the drink of choice, which I had a pint of :) ) My chowder was very tasty, but the only downside is I would have preferred more seafood, as it seemed to have more vegetables than seafood. As for my girlfriends Stew, well that was amazing, I wish I had gotten a bowl of that. It was like coming home to huge welcoming hug, it was beautiful and had such a lovely flavour and being cooked in the stout really added to the depth of flavours. The Guinness bread is also worth a mention, it was amazing, soft and had a sweetness to it , absolutely beautiful for mopping up your starter. For both of us our main we chose Corned Beef with Cabbage, Mash and a side of Parsley sauce. Up until last night I have only ever had Bacon & Cabbage and this is very similar. The corned beef is a joint of beef cured in brine and then boiled. The quality meat we had last night was very lean and beautifully cooked, very tender, and all round it was gorgeous and so filling. The desserts we went for were Bread and Butter Pudding w/Custard and Dark Chocolate fudge cake. Firstly the dark chocolate fudge cake

Great Service! I visited Gallaghers yesterday with two friends. I had a minor compalint that my main course (lamb) was slightly over-done. The waiter was very apologetic. I noticed at one stage that the chef had discreetly passed our table to view the dish. When the bill came, the waiter explained that they had deducted the cost of my main course from the bill. What great service! I eat out regularly and very occasionally we may have reason to complain. This is the first time that a restaurant did not charge us on the basis of a minor complaint. Fair ball to them and also to the chef who was conscious of any sort of criticism. All of the other dishes were great and overall the atmosphere in gallaghers is very sociable and enjoyable.

I didn't like this place at all. It was far too cramped. There was two of us so we had to sit beside strangers. We only had main courses my friends steak was very dried up, no flavour at all of it. I had the boxty pancake which I didn't like. Again it was dry with only the tiniest amount of sauce on the outside. The chips we couldn't eat as they were burnt. Would not recommend.

Dear omer, We are disappointed to hear that you were not happy with your experience at Gallagher's Boxty House. smack bang in temple bar, so not normally a place i'd go for, as rammed full of tourists, that said good atmosphere in there although tables are very close you might as well join the table next to you. Food was good, stew was excellent but i though burgers we a little lacking, seemed a little 'dry' for me and bread roll was not what i'd expect for 16 odd euros, did wish i had the fish n chips that looked great.

Went here for Breakfast after a bit of a heavy night out the night before! And talk about "just what the doctor ordered", the breakfasts are huge and really reasonably priced, starting from 5 euro!!!! I got a vegetarian one, and my husband got one with Steak! Free top ups of coffee were offered and given in plenty, and a jug of water was produced by a very friendly chef who realiesed and sympathised with our hungoverness! Forget "Breakfast at Tiffany's", from now on it's Breakfast at Gallaghers" for me all the way! Next hangover I'll be back more! Thanks a mil and keep up the good work!

Gallaghers was ok.... found it a bit cramped with no atmosphere- was more like a pub. Food was only ok- the steak was a bit fatty for €20 and my boyfriend had the lamb stew, which he thought may have been cooked the day before. Staff were good but not sure if the 12.5% service charge is really deservant for this restaurant.

We went there with friends for a Sat night dinner. The soup was really nice and the others liked the bacon&ham, the beef boxty and the seafood boxty very much. I ordered chicken boxty with bacon but didn't like the sauce, it was too blunt. Overall, I think it's rather pricey - we paid 60€ for a starter and 2 mains, a pint and a Coke. We were seated downstairs where it's not that busy but it was still crowded. Service was OK but nothing extraordinary.

Dead on for wandering through Temple Bar on a midweek night. Had the bacon & cabbage with champ mash which did the necessary job of a sturdy meal before a couple of drinks further on. The lamb boxty was fine for my mate. Small frustration that they don't serve Guinness but all in all, service very good and forwarned us that the bacon & cabbage may take longer to cook. Worth a trip back under same circumstances.

Excellent value lunch menu! €5 for a good selection of main courses- I had a really tasty warm potato and bacon salad! My husband wasn't too impressed with his cheese burger- but the food at the next table- Guinness stew- looked and smelled delicious! Portions were generous and side dishes reasonable. The restaurant was packed and the lone barman / waiter did really well in looking after everyone. Great atmosphere -very cosy- and we were tempted to stay for a pint after lunch, as it seemed some of the tourists there were settling in for the afternoon! Next time! We'll be back.

Dropped in here late one night after noticing a "2 for 1" offer on boxties and stews. Having never tried a boxty before, my friend and I went in. Really nice atmoshphere, busy, and our server was lovely. I had the gammon boxty (because they were OUT of the chicken one..) and it was really fatty and to be honest, not very enjoyable. My friend seemed to enjoy her vegetarian one though. Had the offer not been 2 for 1, I'd call this bad value, but I guess it was ok for half price food.
Response:
Hi rockster88 Sorry that you had a bad experience with the Gammon Boxty, which really is one of our most popular dishes. Please drop back in sometime (and let us know in advance so we can sort some drinks for you!), and check out the price reductions we are implementing this week on our A La Carte menu.

Had beans on toast for breakfast and wished I hadn't, nothing good to say about the food, someone opened a tin, put some in the microwave and served it on Tesco toast, eh that's it. Coffee was just about as good. Maybe for tourists who want an authentic fake Irish atmosphere.

I like the atmosphere in this place,It looks like a bit of a old pub with old wooden chairs and tables and beer on tap! The food is allright , I got a boxty and I dodn t like the taste of the pancake, the potato cake in starter and the desert was excelent tough. Service was good , nothing to complain about it. Value is really got the christmas deal and it was really cheap.

Love this place. Been here a good few times and the food has always been great, big portions and the Dublin Coddle and Irish Stews are great. They have dishes that are traditional yet not seen on many menus Dublin. They also have Murphy's Red beer on tap which is also rare here. It's a busy, touristy place but it's great fun with a group especially when they have trad sessions on. I brought my girlfriends family when they visited us from Scandanvia and they loved the food and atmosphere. The service has always been good and efficient. It is in the heart of Temple Bar, so if you're at all xenophobic, best avoid.

I do like Gallagher's a lot for a casual lunch or dinner; their menu is original and in general they do not dissapoint; service is often very reliable too; in the evenings it may get too noisy for my taste and sometimes tourists have the tendency to want to "share" their conversation with you (or yours with them!) which is not the same than sharing just the table...hmmm

went for lunch on Monday few weeks ago. It was about 3.30pm pm when we arrived and the restaurant was fairly quiet with 2 other tables. The staffs were friendly and we felt welcomed. we had the set lunch. the menu was limited with choices and we feel we could get better value with the same price in the area. i ordered the seafood chowder, it was much to my disappointment as it was tasteless, with only few scanty pieces(small) of fish. i had the chicken salad as main, the chicken breasts were tough & rubbery. my main didn't arrive until 20 mins after my companion started, and i had been trying to ask the waiters but they were just sitting there talking. It took a few attempts to get their attention. overall wasn't a pleasant experience. wouldn't be back in a hurry.

Was recommended this restaurant for something different and it did not disappoint, it was just that..different! I had never tasted boxty before and had the Boxty Beag for starters which were like little dumplings in a blue cashel cheese sauce and the steak boxty for mains which was like a filled pancake. My boyfriend said that it wasnt like real boxty which he has sampled from the west of ireland homemade but we still both enjoyed it all the same. Couldnt resist trying the baileys bread and butter pudding and i have to say it was delicious and served with a little portion of icecream...yum! It was very busy so I would recommend booking a table at weekends. Menu is quite big if the boxty isnt to everyones liking. Wine was a little expensive and not a huge choice but overall we were happy and would go again!

If you ask me the boxty served here isn't even proper boxty! Boxty comes from back in the day and is still available to buy in shopps mainly in the midlands and it tastes a lot nicer than the food in here. Also they menu and staff can be misleading, I went in for breakfast and was asked what juice I would like with my breakfast and would I prefer tea or coffee, turned out neither were included in it and he made it out like they were. The breakfast ended up costing about 16 euro!

Perhaps it was the fact that it was the first meal I had with my bf when he got back from the states but this was possibly one of the nicest meals I've had in a lond time. The staff were lovely but it was just so funny being the only national people in the restaurant listening to the "leprechaun" kinda stuff. The food was amazing and so fresh. Go with the boxty and the fish this is was this place does perfectly!

We went for late dinner on Sunday attracted by the charming looking of the place. A nice waitress squeezed us in a table with two more people and we ordered a seafood platter to share, steak and salmon for main courses. The platter was insufficient even though we asked for a platter to share, we got just one unit for most of the seafood, I didn’t really mind to pay more and try everything! The oyster was nice but the rest of the seafood was tasteless… After waiting for 1 hour after finishing the platter, we left this expensive place whiteout having our main course paying an outrageous 12.5% for a bad service and a roaring stomach. Apparently they don’t want to have regular customers, just rip off tourists that they’ll never come back again.

Very very disappointed with this place. Had two american cousins over and wanted to bring them somewhere a bit different to what they're used to. After careful consideration I chose this place. Luckily we booked because there was a queue out the door when we arrived. The waiter was brilliant and we were shown to our table immediately. The menu looks great but we were all disappointed when our meals were brought out. Mine was the worst. I ordered the Boxty Mór which was supposed to be boxty dumplings with seasonal veg with either smoked salmon and dill cream or Cashel Blue Cheese sauce. When it came out, it was literally swimming in a white sauce which was neither smoked salmon nor Cashel Blue and was not at all nice. The boxty dumplings were tiny little things and I ended up trying to fish them out of the sauce. Everyone else said their dishes were ok but none of us finished our meal. On the other hand, the desserts were divine, although mine came out 10 minutes after the other 3 and I had to ask the waitress 3 times for it. Won't be going back here

Very nice food, menu very different from other places in Temple Bar. THey also have early bird menu. Didn't really like the idea of seating people at the table with others, especially when looking for table for 2. Limited choice of beers. Service charge automatically added to the bill, really bad idea in this sort of place, feel like awarding waiter for just average service. I guess they are trying to save on staff by passing expense on guests...

A great place to take visitors from home and abroad. The food is different here to anywhere else I've been. Different in a good way! I had the chicken boxty with champ on the side.....words could not describe how delicious this was. The atmosphere in the restaurant was lovely....I really felt like I was in a small kitchen in the countryside. The staff were excellent, they really knew their stuff! Top marks!

Very nice restaurant but would appeal more to a tourist rather than a local customer. However, the food was delicious and it has a very cosy atmosphere. Had the soup of the day to start which was very nice and the traditional roast chicken for main which again was very good. Would definitely recommend it!

I went to the Boxty House with my boyfriend eary evening mid-week. I had always suggested it to visitors from abroad but wanted to try it for myself. I had the black pudding starter which was delicious but I was a little disappointed with the steak boxty. I would recommend choosing a more plain dish as the steak took away from the star of the show. The atmosphere was that of a genuine old Irish place with none of the usual Temple Bar bull. The staff were very friendly and helpful with the menu. Sharing tables was actually a nice touch on this type of atmosphere. I will continue to recommend it to foreign friends.

We ate here just before Christmas - it was fantastic. I had the bangers and mash, my girlfriend had the salmon-stuffed chicken. Delicious and not too expensive at around €15 each for the main courses. Highly recommended.

We had dinner in Boxty on a Saturday night, booked a table for my guests from Hungary. We enjoyed the night, this is good place to give a bit of taste of Ireland to your visitors. Food and service was good enough. There were 7 of us but still we had to sit with two other poeple on the same table. I was a bit surprised by that! So were they!

Went here for a lunch before xmas and thought the food was great. The service was quite slow and people who came in after us had been served before us, even though us and another couple kept asking for service. At the end when we asked for the bill we were presented with a bill for voer 100 with alcohol. We only had some water as i was in work. Not exactly the bill I wanted to see and no apology given. However, I thought the food was wonderful even if the service was slow!

Had my second dinner here and was as impressed as the first time. I love the darker lighting in the place, and the open fire is a nice touch. I had a superb Chicken boxty last time, and as we were early enough for the 'early bird' special this time, we did that. It is 2 courses for less than €20 (€15? €19? can't remember sorry!), the 2 other people I was eating with both had the winter vegetable soup starter, and Bacon and Cabbage main. Both were delicious, particularly the sauce on the Bacon and Cabbage. I had pate to start, fabulous, with warm soda bread, cranberry sauce and crackers. I opted for the steak as my main, it was cooked to perfection with lovely huge chips and a mushroomy sauce. Thats 2 great meals there now, I highly recommend!

My family have gone here for Christmas Eve breakfast the past two years and I can attest that their Full Irish is second to none. The place is a little cramped and when somebody sitting on the inside of our table decided they wanted to leave before the rest of the party had finished our meal, it caused major problems. The staff were extremely hospitable though and I've little doubt that we'll be back once again on the 24th of December 2009.

We came here for lunch with some English friends before they flew back to London that night. We normally avoid Temple Bar due to the "tourist factor" - places are usually packed with tourists and the restaurants/bars are generally a little pricier than other areas. Both preconceptions proved to be correct - we had to wait 10-15 minutes for a table at 4:00pm and it was definitely more expensive than it's neighbours down on the Quay or Dame St. However, we're pleased to report the food more than made up for it! Our meals were absolutely superb and the six in our party were very impressed with everything ordered. We still feel strongly a service charge should be optional rather than compulsory so find the practice of including this in the bill a little heavy-handed. The service was excellent though so in this instance, didn't mind the presumption. Would definitely return!

Went there with a friend from London. This was my third time to this restaurant. Atmosphere was good but food was disappointed. I went for Boxty Gammon. I think it was too salty. My hubby went for sausages & mash & her didn't enjoy it at all. My friend went for Boxty Lamb & it wasn't good. Don't think I will go again. I won't recommend to my visitors anymore.

I've brought my parents here for dinner last week. We arrived early (5.30PM) and the live music session was still on. We were seated right beside the performers, a bit too noisy but it gave an irish touch to the dinner. The service was impeccable and the food was quite tasty. The only downside would be the value, the portions could be a bit bigger for the price paid. Overall it was a positive experience. The bill came at €98 for 3 starters and 3 mains (drinks excluded)

I would reccomend this restaurant. The food is very good and not expensive. portions are big and the service is excellent. waiters are kind and professional. the interiors are really warm and the location in supercentral. the restaurant in clean and confortable. The value for money is great. we paid nearly 35 each for a great meal inclusive of desserts. I have been there many times and i reccomend the stews, the chowders, the lamb boxty, the fish and chips, and they also have a great bread and butter pudding. don't go looking for wine, the list is not great, but the murphys is really good

I visited here last night with an open mind however I was sadly disappointed. After waiting for a long time for our orders to be taken we then waited for over an hour for our food to arrive. Our order must have gotten lost as we waited a further 15 mins- we had been told 2 by the waiter. When our food arrived it was fine. The boxty was more pancake/crepe than what the Irish Mammies traditionally make. We then waited again for our empty plates to be taken away and another long wait for the dessert menu. The warm chocolate pudding is very nice but it couldnt make up for the overall experience. Add to that twee iddly-diddly music and 12.5% service charge (service????), I left feeling robbed of my time and money. A one-off best left to the ignorant tourists.

We had some relatives visit from the US and a large group of us visited this eatery. The atmosphere was great, it was lively and very busy. I have to say my food was really tasty and for the price this is a very reasonable resteraunt with great choice and great food. It is a great place to meet up with people and have a fun night. I would definitely recommend a visit here.

Boxty's is synonymous with Irish food hence it has become a favourite pitt stop when a friend visit from abroad.I was only there last night along with 4 other friends.ALl of us were busy tucking into their boxty pancakes and bacon.I must comment that their portions vary with the boxty's being a tad petite while the bacon was extremely generous in portion. The ambience of the restaurant is quaint and cosy which depicts the typical irish setting..

I visited here on a Saturday night, accompanied by friends visiting from Italy. I wanted to give them a taste of traditional Irish food and thats exactly what we got. We were seated immediately and the waitress was very plesant. We ordered Murphys stew for three and I ordered the Roast Chicken. We were all very happy with the food, it was tasty and hot. For dessert I recommended we order the brown bread ice cream and we enjoyed it thoroughly. I would recommend this restaurant as it was good value for money, nice setting, good service and most importantly the food was delicious!!

I paid a visit to this place last Saturday with a couple of friends. Service was perfect: friendly and professional. We decided to share a starter of Farm House Pate': delicious! As a main course I went for a Fish Boxty, which I quite liked. I also treated myself to a very good chocolate pudding. All in all, a pleasant experience.

Really liked this place, the food was delicious. I had the seafood boxty, really gorgeous and my Mam had the gaelic boxty, the steak was so tender would highly recommend either of these. The chips were gorgeous too really chunky, perfect. I'll definitely go back.

This is a gem of a place! I brought some foreign friends here and I was so proud of the cuisine! the service was great, food was gorgeous and so traditional and interesting and the prices were fine. we sat there for hours and never once felt rushed or unwelcome - quite the opposite in fact. this place really understands the meaning of Cead mile failte!

Appalling. The notoriously bad service industry in Dublin has sunk to a new low and this is it. Stone cold food, rude waiter all that for a small print 15% service charge hidden at the bottom of the bill. I seriously hope most of the customers are intoxicated when they go in there so they dont leave with a bad impression of Dublin. We have eaten there before and the service was great, we were well looked after and stayed for extra drinks and desserts, i wonder if they have had a change of management as even the manager was condescending and rude. After this experience we will never recommend this place to anyone!

This is a great place to take visitors. I'm an American living now in Dublin for several years and frequently have American friends and family visit. They tend to desire some kind of unique 'Irish' experience and Gallagher's seems to fit the bill for them. I don't like it for dinner, but for a late afternoon lunch, it's not bad.

I hadn't made a reservation but I arrived early in the evening. While the boxty lamb and the fish were fair, I had ordered it with the traditional thick hand cut chips, but I was served a couple of oily potatoes instead. So I asked for the chips on the side. We were finished the meal by the time the chips arrived. We never got the ketchup or drinks we ordered and when I alerted the waiter to the fact that the chips seemed more like the bird's eye frozen variety than thick 'hand cut chips', he said their 'delivery of chips hadn't arrived that morning' -s till didn't sound like special chips except for them being overpriced. For an Irish restaurant, I met no Irish staff. They also automatically add a service charged, which they didn't deserve.

It was my first time in this restaurant and I feared it would be too touristy but I had a craving for bacon & cabbage that woudn't go away. I was very plesantly suprised, I got in just before the rush on a Friday night and was amazed at just how busy this place is we ordered the seafood platter which was fantastic vaue and had a great selection of everything from oysters to smoked mackerel and I followed it with the aforementioned bacon and cabbage which arrived as a HUGE ham hock on colcannon with parsley sauce - it definitely wasnt like mammy used to make but god it was good, himself had the coddle which was never my favourite looking dish but he loved it we were stuffed by then but the waiter (who was lovely !) suggested the brown bread ice cream so we had one to share - with a shot of bailey's and again we were immpressed would definitely reccomend it to anyone feeling nostalgic for a bit of (better than )home cooking

Our food was slow in arriving and we were offered brown bread while waiting, it was a dry tasteless piece of Oirish baking. Our mains were not any better, the boxty is a pancake by another name. The highly recommended ham hock, champ and cabbage was a mess, and a hugely portioned one at that. Later the toffee pudding was dotted with currants which was odd. It was somewhat embarrassing to have dragged my foreign friend along. Not only that but they have service charge added to each bill, but not exactly advertised. Overall not good food. Don't do it.

While my family visited from Scotland I took them here for an early dinner after the wait for a table at the restaurant next door was 1 hour 15 mins!! So the six of us tried Gallaghers and we were accommodated immediately in the downstairs area which was far more spacious than what you see from Temple Bar. The service we received was excellent and the waitress personally reccommended what we all had to eat, which was a nice touch. Most of us had the Irish Stew and really enjoyed it. I had the Sausages and horsereadish mash which was devine. My Fiancee had a "Boxty" which was a savoury pancake filled with Chicken, bacon veg in a white sauce which she loved. We were all full by now but seeing as how the waitress "bummed up" the sticky toffee pudding so much. We all tried one and it was certainly the best I have ever tasted. Definitely worth a look if you are in the Temple bar area and fancy a quick supper.

One of the few places in Dublin that hasn't changed for years. Used to go here with my drama group 20 years ago and went back with my husband recently. It still has the same atmosphere, a little packed but a great atmosphere. We both had vegetarian boxty and a bottle of red wine. The boxty was delicious and I realised I hadn't tasted anything like it in years. Great place, wont take so long going back the next time.

Had an evening out with a couple of friends from the UK and Holland. Great atmosphere but some of the food was a bit of a disappointment - the stew was cold and accompanying vegetables were bland and underseasoned. The mixed grill was very unassuming but the boxty was rated top notch by one friend. The atmosphere made up for the food and the service was great - overall I would recommend this as a great place for a touristy dinner!

My first trip to Dublin and had never heard of a boxty. THe "pancake" is what we call an oatcake over here and they didn't seem home made but looked exactly like what we buy in packets in Staffordshire UK. Having said that I've never eaten them in this way and we thoroughly enjoyed our boxtys, but did need a long walk afterwards as they were quite heavy. The staff were very pleasant and price very reasonable. If we visit Dublin again in the future I would definitely go again.

I wasn't very impressed with The Boxty House. Me and my boyfriend (who is a big boxty fan) went for dinner expecting traditional Irish Boxty based dishes, we were left a bit disappointed. It was only OK, one more for the tourists maybe...

3 vegetarians and an omnivore ate here on a Saturday evening and left sated. We were at bit miffed at being told quite gruffly that we had to vacate our table very quickly as they would be getting busy - hardly the first words you want to hear out of the waiter's mouth. Despite this, the atmosphere was nice, the food came quickly and was tasty, and the service warmed up as the night went on. As it turned out we stayed over 2 hours and were unhurried by the staff. The camembert/pear salad was a treat and the coddle was well-received by the meat-eater. The chowder, veg boxty and chicken boxty were all hailed as delicious, but a side order of plain boxty was very dry. When we requested a sauce we were given a beef gravy which they insisted was vegetarian - very poor form. The desserts were tasty but not mind-blowing. Overall, it was a nice night and very good value. Perfect for tourists and natives alike.

I have been there three times so far. First with Irish friends, then with my family visiting. It is actually one of the place where you can take friends visiting to experience some traditional Irish food without being embarassed at the end of the dinner. Just one Dish to avoid: the mixed grill. It was totally "out of passion". The Boxties and the Stews are actually good, the place looks nice and the service is really good.

What scrumptious dinner! Rather than being a bit "twee" as I'd expected it to be, the place was full of Irish people bringing guests/friends to sample "typical" Irish food...and wolfing it down quite happily! I can't agree with other reviews complaining of small portions...our plates were overladen with veggies and sauce (I had the yummy veg boxty!). Then again we did say we were nicely hungry....The waitress was absolutely wonderful- friendly and discreetly attentive. We were all looking at what other diners had ordered before we made our choices and everyone (strangers and fellow diners at the same table and the one beside us...no romantic dinner for two here!!)commented that they didn't know which dish to order. I'll be back...and I'm a Dub! Hmmmm...what to have next time?

Nice place, one of the few Irish places thriving on Irish food. Don't forget to get a booking beforehand and try Moling's red ale!

Just had dinner here last night - great meal, service was top class & atmosphere was superb. Highly recommend it - definitely reserve a table though, a lot of people were waiting a while for a table!

Myself & 4 friends from England ventured into Gallaghers on Friday night. Although it was very busy, the atmosphere was terrific. The food was out of this world & the service was very friendly. The menu is extensive which was great for the 4 fussy eaters (covered all tastes). We had a great night & will definitely return when next in Dublin.

Went here on a busy Saturday night a few weeks ago and had a great time. The table sharing doesn't seem to be to everyone's taste but the couple sitting next to us were great fun. The food is good, very tasty and there's a lot of variety to the menu (maybe a touch too much? Always worry about large menus). Staff were friendly and we had good banter with our server. Not sure about the service charge but that's in nearly every city centre restaurant now isnt it? A sad side-effect of the Celtic Tiger.

Sorry, I know that this restaurant caters to the tourists but there should be a warning posted on the door for locals. Christian Brothers style seating does not balance with the cost of eating here. Sitting beside an open door getting ones head frozen off does not a pleasant dining experience make. Ethnic cuisine is fine but since when does 'coddle' become 'Dublin coddle'. As far as I am aware coddle is a dish designed, constructed and invented in Dublin so why append the word to the city? Besides, it is not real coddle if there is no tripe included, no matter where the dish originated. Perhaps they should simply call it Gallagher's Boxty House coddle and be done with it. My partner had a most unappetising looking salmon dish which looked like it had been sent back by someone last December and reheated for her that evening. The sticky toffee pudding was good, I wish I knew where in Ireland it was invented. The same thoughts occured to me as I sipped quite a good cappuccino and pictured in my mind's eye someone's Irish grandparents, warming themselves by a turf fire in the west as the Irish rain pelted their roof, entranced with happiness as they sipped their frothy cappucinos while waiting to hear the news on the radio. The food was heavy and unappetising. It was also overpriced and badly cooked. The staff were friendly and efficient but I wont be back.

I have been here only once and naturally that sums up my experience. My friends suggested this place for an "Irish restaurant" for us to treat my parents and nieces who were visiting from abroad. As it was a Friday night I made a reservation. However, upon arrival they could not find my name on the list and we had to endure an unpleasant wait. I wanted to leave and go somewhere else but my friends persuaded me to wait. I am sorry I did because it was certainly not worth the wait. My folks and nieces did not seem terribly impressed either.

This looked very inviting to us on a rainy winter's day. We were put beside the fire, to dry off.. Excellent, friendly service. I had the Vegetarian Boxty which was good, wasn't crazy about it but I'm generally not crazy about anything crêpe-like, so I can't fault them on that score. Nice place, especially if you can get a seat beside the fire!

Excellent restaurant, great food (honey Salmon to die for). Get in early, book a table and come back. Staff very helpful and know their menu. Atmosphere can be touristy but really nice too. Id say middle of the road €€€ wise.

Whilst I gave Gallagher's a glowing review earlier this year for it's breakfast, and still stick by that as they are great, I was sorely disappointed with my meal there this afternoon. I've had their steaks and they are lovely, but today I thought I'd try one of their 'Traditional Irish Meals'. I ordered the Bacon & Cabbage with Champ. When it eventually turned up (service was quite slow today) I was horrified to find out that the 'bacon' was nothing more than 3 thin slices of some kind of processed 'pretend' bacon, kind of like a very cheap gammon steak. The French family at the next table asked what myself & hubby were eating and if it was 'traditional Irish food' as that was what they wanted to try. My hubby had the Irish Stew (which was tasty) so we recommended that to them, but after my first mouthful of the 'bacon' I had to warn them not to try that as it was horrible. And it was. I gave the lumpy Champ and tasteless Cabbage to hubby who mashed it into his stew, left the bacon and ended up pinching bit of hubby's Irish stew and chomping on some brown bread to fill me up. I mentioned my disappointment (regarding the 'pretend' bacon) to the waiter who just said they'd never had any complaints about the bacon beforehand (let's face it, it's mainly tourists who eat there and probably don't know what decent Bacon & Cabbage should taste like) and promptly gave us a bill for the full amount. We pursued our complaint and eventually they knocked off the price of a small bottle of water and a pint of Murphy’s. I came away with a rather sour taste in my mouth and won't be eating lunch or dinner there again.

Nice enough place, good for a nice breakfast. One thing that really cheesed me off was that we were seated next to someone we did not know, (it was a four seater table), I thought he was joking, the place was empty so space problems. I refused and he did not seem happy, not my problem. Good honest food, watch out though, the waiter could sit you in the kitchen.

My wife and I booked this restaurant for last Friday after reading the reviews on this site. We weren't disappointed. Booking was essential; the place was packed at 7pm. The food was really tasty, we both has the beef boxty for our main meal, which was very filling, although I still found some space for the homemade bread and butter pudding.... highly recommended. A great place to have a down to earth meal, sample some Irish hospitality and enjoy a pint of Murphy's.

We chanced our arm at this restaurant recently and luckily got the last table in the house - we had no reservation made. We were lead down the stairs to a little room and a table for 5 was waiting for us. The menu was very enticing, plenty to choose from and the service was great, very professional and chirpy, even though they were quite obviously rushed off their feet. Our meals were ready in about 15 minutes and we all polished everything off. The highlights for me were the food, the atmosphere (great buzz around the place) and the service. The only drawback that would possibly make me think twice about going back is that the tables are packed in pretty tightly. You have customers and the waiting staff, squeezing between tables to get by. This might have been a one off - maybe there were large parties in there, but it looked cramped. We had a corner to ourselves so we were not affected but it could be annoying if you had someone squeezing past you when you are trying to enjoy your meal. This is the only drawback. We will return but only if we get a table tucked away in a corner!

I visited here on Friday night. Had good expectations from previous reviews..Well if you want an Irish feel to your meal this is the place to go..An Irish cottage feel to the place..Not ideal if you want a very private meal with intimacy because you will have to share a very large table with another couple when things get bust so its advisable to go for an early meal here..Like before 7.30pm..Onto the food...Overall it was quite good..I ordered the starter and it was served to me in 90 seconds, so possibly microwaved!..But saying that it was one of the nicest seafood chowders I have ever tasted..Main course steaks were cooked as requested and with ample side orders...Desert selection as with the main course was overwhelming with great variation. This is a great place to take friends if you are in a hurry and dont want to be held up by dwindling hosts or waiters..The only negative is that the waiter on the night was too eager to get the tables cleared..Your plate had only been emptied and it was scurried away from under your nose..So service needs to relax slightly and let customers enjoy the meal instead on concentrating on getting the waiting queue seated, which in itself shows the popularity of this reasonable establishment..Worth a try!!

Food fantastic, one of the best meals we've had in ages. Service efficient, helpful and friendly. No need to recommend this restaurant, the queues out the door when we arrived and as we left can do this. If you want a table an early booking is essential. Back soon.

We were happy - very tasty food and quite large portions as well as a decent wine list. Also the staff were very accommodating when my friend's flight was delayed and I had to call twice to change our booking (on a Friday night!).

The atmosphere has the Irish feel to it. The service is extremely fast and efficient but this shows that the food was precooked. However it still turned out great, lots of taste and the portion was reasonable. If you're planning to dine here, book a table early as they fill out fast. I would recommend the seafood and the lamb boxty.

Excellent all round really!! Was a bit sceptical about eating in a traditional Irish restaurant on a Saturday night in Temple Bar! But, it was the most enjoyable meal I've had in there. As the others said, booking is very important, and many people were turned away at the door... Food was excellent quality, and the portions are quite generous and reasonable enough considering it’s targeting the tourists! 100% recommended for an enjoyable meal, in great surroundings, and with fabulous staff!!

The food in Gallagher’s is just amazing. The boxties are tasty and filling, the meat is superb and even the vegetarian dishes are full of flavour! Always full of tourists, so that might not be your idea of a great atmosphere, but its worth going at least once and learn what traditional Irish food is like...

Good place to take your visiting friends who want a taste of Irish food. Have been twice now and both times we felt that the prices were reasonable, food was decent, service unexceptional but not terrible. Overall a fine place to go and our friends from America don't get quite the sticker shock as some other city centre restaurants. One thing we made sure to note to our visitors was that Guinness is not available, however Murphy’s is. Our favourites to date have been the boxty dishes, but stew lovers will appreciate the choices available to them. Skip the dumplings, they were pasty and tasteless. Mixed veggies were a nice addition, though.

We took my mom and two aunts for Irish dining and were recommended the Boxty House. We were there early, around six and the place was quiet. We got a nice table upstairs by the window and were even asked if we preferred being in the room with the two musicians playing and singing or the other one. Four of us had Boxtys and they were all delicious but the portions were not enormous. The waiter had suggested we order a side of colcannon and boiled potatoes, which were essential, it turned out. Yet we didn't finish all of them. One aunt had Murphy's stew and really enjoyed it saying it was full of taste and made with good meat. I don't eat meat and was still able to find many dishes to choose from. The atmosphere chilled slightly when we told the waiter we were not having desserts, just coffees and then wanted to pay separately. But I do think I'll return the next time we get non-Irish guests!

In fairness I went with a group, which included visitors, and they thought it was good. Not a place I'd go back to but there is nothing wrong with it just too Irish with the fiddle player etc for me. Food is Irish (?), breakfast pudding was good for a starter and the lamb boxty was fine. It is not expensive.

Great, tasty traditional food. I've been here many times - it's a great way to introduce visitors to Ireland to our 'traditional cuisine'. Great atmosphere, it can be very busy though and portions could be a bit bigger for the price, but other than that it's without fault. Recommended.

Because tourists are its main clientele, one would expect mediocre food at best, and I avoided going here for quite a long time. However, that is certainly not the case! The food has always been excellent, particularly the boxties. This is a great place to sample contemporary (and certainly upscale) versions of traditional Irish dishes. Children's dishes are a great value as well.

I've eaten here three times but have tried to eat here at least seven or eight times when wanting to allow visitors to try 'Irish' food. The place has a very simple idea - take a basic, staple Irish dish and move it significantly upmarket. If this were a pub, I would call it a 'gastro-pub'. The result works well as an 'experience' for visitors. If you have a choice, try to sit upstairs on the ground floor rather than in the basement
