This little gem of a restaurant is a breath of fresh air. We had the 3 course early bird menu for 26 euro running a promotion at the moment buy one get one free. We both had bbq chicken wings for starters, big portions and very tasty. Both had burgers with mushrooms and swiss cheese, they were really nice too. Dessert was equally as good, 1 cappicino cheesecake and one sticky toffee pudding a great end to a fab meal. The waiter was very polite, friendly and very efficient. 10 out of 10 for food, service and fantastic value for money. We will be back.

Enjoyable meal, not very busy although it was a Sunday night. The 'to share' starters were quite small although we did enjoy our mains - I had the duck whilst hubbie had the burger. Not the friendliest waitress serving us and despite it being quiet she just didn't seem to ever be around when we wanted anything. Food was tasty though and we'll probably go again.

Mrs Slurryhead and myself ate here using a Menu Pages voucher recently. Considering it was a Friday evening, it was very quiet with just 4 tables occupied. Mind you there was a steady flow and the 4 tables were in use all of the time. We just had the mains plus wine and shared a dessert. Mrs had the pork which was quite a large portion beautifully garnished and I went for the braised beef. We were both very happy with our dishes but the pork was probably the winner by a short trotter. The generous glasses of house red were very drinkable but the sticky toffee pudding was unremarkable and a bit pricey at €6 a portion (incl a boule of ice cream). Service was provided to all by the only waiter who was polite and attentive to all of the tables he attended to. Afterwards we adjourned to the olde world Gaffneys Pub around the corner for a drink before heading home. Quite a pleasant evening.

Not quite sure where some of the negative reviews are coming from for this restaurant. My partner and I have eaten here a number of times as it is our local eatery. We have always found the food to be outstanding, Service is always promt, the waiter (always seems to be the same gentleman that serves us) is helpful, efficient and polite. Looking forward to eating here again soon!

Myself and my husband visited this reatuarant for the first time on Sunday. We did not have a booking and although they were busy they found us a table. We were offered choice of 3 menus, the earlybird, ala carte and another set menu, we opted for the earlybird with its wide choices. The food and the service were excellent and the atmosphere really good. Even when we finished there was no hurry to rush us out which is something I find in most restuarants these days. I had read reviews about Canters and was of mixed opinion but my advice is to try it before you make up your mind because sometimes reviews depend on the day a person is having and not necessarily a true reflection of the restaurant. Have been guilty of this myself in the past. All said a great evening was had. Well done Canters.

On a rare night out with my Husband, we decided to support the local restaurant and on checking out Menupages saw an offer for Canters. Result... We arrived at 8.30pm and all looked good, dimmed lights, busy tables, nice buzz. Unfortunately that is where the good experience ended! We were met, not greeted by "Oh you're on the voucher" loudly in front of a table of four which made us feel like we were in steerage! Menus were put on the table in front of us and our cocktails the same. We had to call the waitress back to ask what they were, the answer "Sea Breeze" as she walked away. Made a point of calling her back to ask what was in them. They were lukewarm, bitter and seemed second hand! After one careful sip, we sent them away. No query as to why or indeed an offer of something else. Starters were nicely presented but bland. Salad had absolutely no seasoning and gritty - not washed.. Mains of Pork Chop with Black Pudding and Blue Cheese was fantastic. Mashed potatoes was sticky, lumpy and had the consistency of powdered mash.. The braised beef was also good and arrive with the same mash. menu stated it came with dauphinoise potatoes and when we asked we were told that this should have been changed 3 weeks ago and off she walked.. We thought we had booked into Faulty Towers!! The only saving grace was the bottle of Chilean wine which we ordered as an extra. To summarise our experience. Nice restaurant, appalling service, menu had its good points but did not live up to the menu description. A La Carte too expensive for the area and serving what can only be compared to SMASH powdered potatoes is an absolute disgrace!! We really wanted to support local and maybe after all should have gone into Town... Will not be coming back here...

We had bought a menupages voucher - 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 cocktails. We arrived at 6, so were early birds in any case. They adhered to it to the letter - would not allow a glass of wine instead of a cocktail (we don't drink spirits) so lost out there - fair enough. The starter was a 'shared' starter - proably should have realised what tht meant - fair enough again. The main course was meat and in my case a tiny bit of salad, mostly olives which I don't eat - and vegetables (the usual side plate of 3 small potatoes and naked cauliflower and carrots) was extra - not OK. So yes they honoured the voucher, but it turned out to be an expensive meal. The main course meat - steak and shank of lamb - was excellent. Only two white wines by the glass, the one we chose was very pleasant. The normal menu seemed pricey, and again potatoes/veg are extra. Ho hum, don't think we'll be back.

The cosy, relaxed atmosphere in Canters was a welcome relief from the blustery evening when my husband and I went for an early bird there recently. The waitress, who was very friendly and informative about the menu, seated us immediately and our carafe of wine followed soon after. To start, I chose for the potato and crisp bacon salad, which tasted really fresh and was very tasty. My other half had the barbeque marinated chicken wings which he really enjoyed. For the main course, my sesame crusted salmon was delicious and my husband's pork cutlets with black pudding and blue cheese were cooked to perfection and tasted really good. I was delighted to see cappucino cheesecake on the dessert menu and it lived up to expectations. A really nice time had by us both and it was really great value.

Was back to Canters today...end of Bank Holiday weekend, just wanted to relax and have a nice meal. Canters has always been pretty 'safe' food wise so decided to have dinner there tonight. Im writing the review as its fresh in my mind and because Im a bit disappinted. Having looked through all the menus (a la carte, and table d'ote and early bird) I went for the 35 euros offer (3 courses) as it had some interesting offers. I ordered smoked breast of duck with beetroot fritters and honey yogurt sauce. For some reason I assumed it would be warm succulent slices of duck meat but instead if was cold thick slices of smoked duck with a cm of lard i.e. fat attached and a dribble of yogurt on it. The beetroot was nice but the batter just didnt work for me. My partner had what was described as beignets of gruyere cheese and chorizo which turned out to be croquettes of stodgy stuff with minisucle pink bits which may have been the chorizo! However the most important factor is the waiter did not ask us if were were happy with the food. He just swiped away the left overs and said nothing. The chef's saving grace is that the main courses were quite good. I had roast halibut with hazelenut crust and it was very nice and the partner had shank of lamb (which he always orders here) and nice veg and potato sides. Dessert was ok, sticky pudding was a bit dry but alright. I ordered an Irish coffee and warned the waiter that Im fussy about my Irish Coffee so he said he makes it himself and afterwards he asked me if it was ok.....pity he didnt ask about the whole meal. I think restaurant owners need to be really sure they have staff with the right attitude, I would feel less pissed off about a 92 euros meal (we did have a 22 euros wine) which wasnt great, if the service was good. I won't be in a hurry to return to Canters which is a pity.

Dined in Canters for a family occasion. Each of us ate off the 3 courses for €30 menu. The menu had a lot of options which suited all of our different tastes. Each course was delicious and portion sizes and additional vegetables were very generous. Service was very good throughout the meal and we will definatley dine here again.

went here for lunch using menu pages voucher. nice little place was reasonably busy for time of day. service from waiter was very good but service from kitchen was terrible. sent back smoked duck starter because they forgot to fritter the beetroot and also forgot the honey yoghurt dressing. when they got it right it was lovely dish. sent back pickled ginger rice with salmon because they had microwaved the rice beyond recognition and it took on a strange and unpleasant rubbery taste and texture. second attempt was better. the kitchen also forgot the black pudding and blue cheese from a 'black and blue' pork chop with chutney which was lovely once they rectifed it but i just think its a bit much to mess up 3 of 6 dishes. desserts were fine an unusual carrot type cake that and espresso cheese cake. place just seemed to lack someone taking responsibility. desserts menu was hand written on back of receipt?? and obviously nobody taking responsibility in kitchen or errors would have been spotted. but il definitely give this place another shot when the dishes were right they were nice and there is value for money to be had here

Had a quick lunch here recently. The restaurant was quite but the waiter was nice & friendly. I had the beef strogannoff which was a little light on beef and there was a lot of oil on the sauce, it was just ok, chunky chips were spot on. My guest had the braised beef which I sampled & it was superb! I shall give the place a shot again & will certainly try the braised beef on my return!

We live in the area of Canters and had dined there a few times and loved it.So when we were looking for somewhere to have a small wedding reception we asked the guy's at Canters and of course it was no problem. We had the whole upstairs to ourselves and we decorated it the way we wanted it.Thirty Six of us sat including kids we had a full menue to choose from and a kids menue. The food was fantastic everybody loved their meal. The staff couldnt have been more helpful it was just perfect. We were able to playlist our own music and we were able to do a slideshow of our photos on the flat screens which was a lovely touch. We felt it was great value in these difficult times, everyone loved the evening which is all we wanted. A big thanks to all at Canters.

First time to eat here. I found the service to be fine. Foodwise was brilliant. We both chose a soup to start. Piping hot and tasty exactly what was required on a cold evening. For mains we had two very tasty fillet steaks. Finally I finished with a cheesecake. The atmosphere was nice with a good mix of diners. At 35 euro each for the food I felt this eatery offered very good value for money. I will be back.

Went here with my girlfriend. We had for starters the Wild Mushroom & Spinach Tartlet & deep Fried Potato Skins which were quite nice. For mains we had the burger and sea bass which was also nice. The negatives were that the food took awhile to come and that the staff weren't as attentive as I thought they shoud've been. Its nice, not amazing. There are better and there are worse.

Booked a pre-christmas get together. This is a local eatery for us so no need for taxis. Service on the button as usual. Had the early bird which is excellent value and the house wine was a perfect accompaniment. A cheap as chips local night out and we all left very satisfied (i recommend the apple pie!)- need I say more?

Went to Canters on the menupages deal. There is a very relaxed atmosphere here. The service was very prompt and friendly. We got the chicken wings to share for our starter. They were quite tasty and a nice portion size. My wife had the curried pumpkin for her main and it was very good and very tasty. I had the steak and like some other reviews, it was a bit undercooked which was a let down. I asked for medium rare and it was edging more on the rare to blue side in parts. The sides that came with the meal were good veg and chips, the chips were really good. The menu states what is gluten free and what is not. My wife is a coeliac so having this on the menu is good bonus. For other coeliacs this is very good spot to go as almost all the menu choices were gluten free, which to me says it is all fresh and made from scratch so you know it is good quality. The menu is very Irish with good in-season products. Overall I would go back to Canters and I did enjoy my meal, but I think I need to go back and try something else before I am fully conviced. With a few pubs near by and serviced by lots of buses you can plan a good night out at Canters.

Visited Canters mid-week arrived at 9pm and were told we could still order from the early bird 3 courses for €26 menu, not sure if this was a one off but still a nice thing to happen when your on a budget. Food is good as is the quanity lacked something though that I cant quiet put my finger on. Lovely atmsphere out especially if you can get one of the tables upstairs at the big window with the fairylights, staff very obliging and friendly. One big draw back no parking outside or even relatively close. Would still recommend just make sure to take a taxi

My wife and I have always liked Canters and we were happy to use a Menupages deal. We had a main course and glass of wine each. I had the mixed grill which was excellent. My wife had pork which she really enjoyed. There was only one waiter working and the restaurant was quite busy when we arrived but he coped very well. He was very efficient and courteous. We will definitely go again.

Went here for a meal last night with a friend. Booked through menupages and used points that I had. I was very impressed. The athmosphere of the place was really nice and I felt immediately comfortable, it also has great curbside appeal, lovely blue fairy lights very very welcoming. Portion sizes were quiet large and as my eyes are bigger than my belly I over did it a little. Had bruchetta for starters and my friend had the chicken wings both very nice, however there was no water served with the chicken wings for finger washing. We both had fish for our mains and apart from the huge portion sizes it was very nice. I will definitley visit here again soon a real gem of a place.

I ate here with my partner for dinner, We had a menupages voucher so it was very good value. I had the panko fried brie to start and it came with a tasty chutney and salad leaves. It was a generous portion. My partner had the Wensleydale and poached pear salad. Its supposed to come with black pudding but as they had none she was offered parma ham with it instead and it still tasted good. We both had the duck with sweet potato gratin for our main course and it was tasty but slightly overdone. The star of the dish was the sweet potato gratin which was absolutely delicious. We ordered a side of chunky chips and were very pleasantly surprised to find that a side of vegetables also arrived and was included in the price of the mains very unusual in most restaurants these day and a big thumbs up to Canters for this. A glass of wine was included in our deal and for once the house wine (choice of Merlot or Cabernet Sauvingion)we opted for the cabernet and it was actually nice and not the usual vinegar that is often served as a house wine. Also a very generous serving. Both of the staff who served us were very friendly and checked with us that we were happy with things. We enjoyed our meal and will be back again. Its not fine dining more bistro style and the menu is a little pricey for the style of food served however they have a loyalty scheme and seem to offer deals fairly regularly and also the early bird is reasonable. Nice to have somewhere close to home to go to and it feels like they make more of an effort than places in the city centre.

This was my first time here and I used my menupoints voucher. We ate from the early bird. There wasn't a huge choice, but we managed! The fish cakes were good as was the lamb kofta. We both had burgers which were tasty. The meat was really tender. Didn't much feel like having dessert afterwards. I would definitely come here again, as it was really good value for money.

went with my husband and mam just for a casual dinner on a saturday night and used some menu points as they have a lot of great menu point offers. There was a great range on the menu and lots of very competitive early bird offers. The food is really tasty and satisfying and the staff were friendly and attentive. Very impressed and will definitely be back again.

Went here last evening with a friend with a Menupages voucher. €24 for 2 mains and 2 glasses of wine. Seemed like a deal. It wasn't. Ordered a steak and the sea bass. Both mediocre. The place was busy but lacked atmosphere. Can it be too much to ask for a few candles on tables in the evening? The advertised "smoking area" is a terrace outside. No ashtrays, no lighting, miserable. The (sirloin) steak was tough, the fish was sad and dry. The glass of wine offered with voucher was poor. The waiter explained that it was from a "promotional" bottle. Not sure what that means but what a shame. Feeling I had to bump up the voucher, we ordered an OK Chardonnnay and a cheese/biscuits plate to finish it with. The plate consisted of about 7 chunks of cold cheese (straight from the fridge to the table) and those odd "cheese selection" biscuits from the supermarket. Staff were pleasant but this place really lacks what makes a local neighbourhood restaurant pleasant. Such a shame as I live nearby and would have loved a place to return to. If you charge north of €20 for mains you have to up your game. Paper napkins and bare tables mean bistro and prices should reflect same.

It was the first time I ate here but my dinner partner had eaten here before. We had booked a table and bought a voucher for E24 for 2 main courses and a glass of wine each, which was great value, other than that the prices were average of restaurants. We ordered a side dish also, but they forget to bring it. The main courses were well enough though so it wasnt a problem. They were both tasty and filling and the staff were friendly. I proberly would go back if I was in the area.

I was looking forward to Canters and I was hugely disappointed. There are actually TVs screens on the wall in this place. I wasn't expecting that. The place looks very inviting from the outside, it's got a warm hideaway look to it. But the inside is in complete contrast. It could do with some work, especially upstairs. The staff were adequate but not great. Didn't ask us how our food was and this was the most disappointing part of our evening dinner. The antipasti was 4 olives (from a jar), three pieces of cured meat and some lettuce. That costs 8euro. The main course pork loin was unbelievably salty, I thought they may have pulled out of the tide in Clontarf. All taste was clouded by salt. At this point, we didn't bother with desert and thankfully the meal was cheap since we had a voucher. But I must admit that I was sick to have paid 8 euro for what could have been bought in Centra across the road for a fraction of the price. There was no creativity or effort put into this starter (0 out of 5). There are a large number of great places to eat up the road so doubt I will visit here again. Looking at the other reviews, this place does a good steak, that on it's own is simply not good enough anymore.

I have eat in Canters on numerous occasions. Food is excellent, never leave hungry. Staff are really friendly and helpful. It seems to be extremely busy. The service is of the highest standard and so helpful when it comes to different dishes. The wine also I felt they were so helpful and even gave a sample of wine before deciding to purchase that wine for the table, which is excellent on their behalf. There is never any delays with the service and the staff are so friendly and chatty, its like home from home. I still go to this restaurant on a regular basis as i live in the vicinity and I would highly recommend it. There are a lot of specials available, early bird menu and cater for large party of people at a special rate. Will be back there again soon.

Impressed again. Haven't been to this restaurant for a while but we left happy again. There were six of us and everyone was impressed. The steaks were cooked perfectly and the pork belly starter was delicious. Not mad about the chips though, either large chunky ones or skinny ones, I prefer the in between size. The wine was excellent and keenly priced. We finished off with a beautiful desert from the a la carte menu a sambuca for everyone. The waiter was very helpful and professional. The price was reasonable as expected , and we will call again sometime.

Myself and my partner went to Canters on Tuesday evening. We were availing of a voucher deal that we bought on-line. We started with a poached pear, black pudding and Wenslydale salad and I had the fried Brie, neither hit the spot. Priced in the €7.50 bracket the product failed to reach expectations... Room for improvement. Service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. For our mains we both had the mixed grill, this was accompanied with a side dish of mixed veg and potatoes, they were bland!! The mixed grill itself was OK the sauces that came with it were a plain Bearnaise and we think a relish of some description but they jazzed up nothing. We found the overall experience average and we are unlikely to return.

My friend and I dined here on Wed. the waitress informed us that the menu had recently changed and offered help with our choices. The place was very busy, but she gave us her full attention, the house reds were both merlot but she suggested a chilean cab/sauv for €1 more and gave us a taste first, good choice.I had the Lamb kofta which was delicious and my friend had fish cakes also very good, fillet of pork for mains delish and cheesecake and coffee after. Food was devine and service excellent even have a loyalty scheme too. Its great to have a place like this nearby will deff be back. Keep up the good work.

Very disappointing dining experience. Service was brusque bordering on downright rude. Food was just okay - fillet steak requested medium was overcooked and side of vegetables limp and tasteless. The cheese plate was tasty but the garnish was a few leaves of lettuce - uninspiring to say the least. Will not be returning.

Only a stone throw from my house so I go here quite often and everytime I am very happy with what I had to eat. On this occasion I had vegetable soup as a starter and sirloin steak as my mains. I was too full to order a dessert but from previously been there I know the desserts are great also. The staff are very friendly and the service is quick. The atmosphere is very nice and the decor is very modern. I would recommend this restaurant to people.

We've been looking for a good small local restaurant for some time, so thought we would give this place a shot. We got the impression that the place hasn't really made up it's mind which market it is targeting – families looking for burgers or something slightly more upmarket. There are at least five different menus to choose from, not including a children's menu, and I think you can try too hard to be all things to all people. We felt the quality of the food was mixed - my starter was an unmemorable chicken picatta, a tad on the dry side, but himself had the crayfish spring rolls which he reported as delicious. I then had a sirloin steak which was cooked to perfection. I had asked for it rare, and that's just how it came – wonderful: a beautiful piece of meat. Himself had the buttered chicken which he said was very tasty. Sadly my dessert was not as good – the chocolate chip bread and butter pudding was disappointing. The wine list was reasonable, and not over the top price-wise. Service was prompt and friendly.

Have walked past this place many times and decided to try it. My husband and I shared a starter (crayfish spring rolls) and each had a delicious main course (lamb shank and a pan fried fillet steak). Yummy apple tart dessert and house red wine topped it off. Meals were lovely, and the service was great even though there was only 1 waiter that I could see! Great local place worth a visit!

I've eaten here a number of times - one of the better options in D3 outside Clontarf. One this occasion I had the salmon cakes - nice, if a bit heavy on the potatoes, then the Thai style salmon, which was lovely but came with some rather traditional Irish sides (spuds, mange touts, cauliflower, brocccoli). Nice glass of Sauvignon Blanc on the side & all the free water you want, the one major downside to the meal was the Seal CD playing. Good value for money on the whole.

Eat here fairly regularly with a friend and always find the staff lovely and the food really good value. The menu changes slightly every now and then which is good. Four of us had a new-years-eve meal here. Food was fantastic - had special menu for €26 for 3 courses.Staff, as usual, were spot on, always asking if everything is OK. I had bruchetta with goats cheese & roast veg, others had melon with sorbet, fish cake and fish tart starters. Chicken supreme on crushed root veg was yummy, freshly cooked with a beautiful creamy sauce! Friends barberry duck (2) & turkey n ham went down every bit as well. Dessert- orange and dark choc trife- was just delicious (though had this before and there were silces of orange in it that were missing this time?). There are always special offers on which makes it reasonably cheap for good quality food. I would (and have) recommended eating here.Keep it up but bring back the herb mushroom starter!

Ate here last night was just on time for the early bird and decided to go for it as a mains a la carte came in at around €20 and the three course was only another €6 so it seemed good value. The food here seemed pre prepared and simply assembled and heated up. I didnt feel like I was getting a freshly cooked meal, with good basic ingedients, treated with respect and taste. Thats what Im looking for when I go out. I ordered the Canters Ceaser Steak burger which came with a portion of chips. The chips were chunky but tasted like frozen oven chips. I asked the waiter if they were frozen chips and I was told they were but fresh cooked ones came with the fillet steak. What a way to treat customers! They know how something as basic as chips should be cooked, but they couldnt be bothered unless you are paying €27 for a fillet steak main course. There are several other restaurants not to far from here who can offer decent chips for lunch, early bird, and dinner menus, its just lazy chefing. The burger was good, a bit of salad on the plate or home made coleslaw with some, again, home made chutney, pickles or mayonaise would have made it special. The Eton Mess desert was not what it said it was. It was nicely presented in a glass but I only tasted about two soft pieces of meringue the rest was a mash of cream, ice cream, berries and maybe meringue but I couldnt tell. It wasnt unpleasant but part of an Eton Mess is loads of nice crispy chewy meringue and that just wasnt there.

Ate here last night, there was a group of 9 at the table. Overall we were very impressed with the value, and the quality of the food. The early bird options of €25 and €35 were excellent, and the portions were very generous. There was no problem with a gentleman smoking a portion of his cigarette between the two entrance doors - and this let to us smelling some smoke when he came back in - but nothing major. The major problem arose when we came to pay the bill. The bill was calculated wrongly. There was an addtition of an extra bottle of wine, and 4 side orders. The confusion arouse because one order requested chips (and all menus stated that mains came with potatoes and veg). They never clarified that this was extra, and when we pointed out that it was just one girl they advised that it was a large bowl they placed down and we ate them all. They were also adament about the wine. We only ordered 2 1/2 carafs and 1 bottle - they first told us the extra bottle was the second white bottle (which we never had) and they handled it really badly. Up until we got the bill I would have considered returning, now its very unlikely.

Had a great meal here last night, they had an offer on for two set meals and a bottle of wine for €70.00. The menu was great we had pea and ham risotto and homemade soup which was lovely. I had a perfectly cooked steak and he had beautiful rack of lamb, malteaser cheesecake oh my God it was fab, and profiteroles and a bottle of chilean sauvignon blanc. The service was great and it was really busy which is geat to see. I'll be going back.

Had lovely meal here on Saturday night. Loved the deep fried risotto and the sea trout with potato salad. My husband had the Thai chicken and the slow cooked beef which he really enjoyed also. Dessert was disappointing, I ordered the orange tart with ginger ice cream- tart lacked any flavour and ice cream was a cheap vanilla. Service was very good and efficient. Wines are reasonably priced- all around €23. Will go back- just hope it's busier next time as it was very quiet..

I went here last night for the first time. I was very dissapointed with the menu when I saw it first, I felt there was not a lot of choice on it. I wanted to get the lamb, but it was out so I went for the steak. After being so sceptical, I was so impressed with the staff and the service and the food that they turned my opinion around straight away. I got the duck spring roll for starter and it was a very decent size. 2 full spring rolls with a lovely salsa dressing. My partner got the soup and loved it also. We both got the steak for main course. It was tender and cooked as requested which doesn't alway happen! We skipped desert as we were so full, but we stayed back for a couple of hours having drinks. The staff were so so nice and accomodating. I was very impressed. I will go back.

I was slightly disappointed by Canters restaurant. Two of us went for a post-Croke park early bird menu and the place was empty, was expecting it to be busy with the amount of people passing by that day. I had very high hopes for the vinegarette chicken but in the end it was quite plain. And the soup to start I could have made myself at home. The burger and chips was quite nice and the desserts were fine, but I won't be in a hurry back to Canters though I wouldn't turn it down if someone else wanted to go. Overall, a very average experience.

Visit Canters quite a bit, and also the Washerwoman Hill in Glasnevin, and I am always really impressed with their quest to deliver relevant offers and value to their customers/clientele On this particulat occasion, went with a friend from work. We both had a starter and two steaks. I asked for medium rare, and think it was the best cooked steak I have had in ages. They also have a really good winelist, with some really interesting wines. Staff are excellent, always pleasant and nothing is too much hassle to them. Really recommend for a mid week supper/dinner, but to make it a great night out (and not just about the food), some live music/better background music would really help lift the sometimes sombre atmosphere.

Had beautiful duck skewers for starters - might have been a bit rare for some tastes but tasted fab - they were served with orange segments and a jus. Other half had pork belly to start and said that is was tasty. Main course of prawn and scallop brochette on linguini was good. 2 skewers of prawns and 1 skewer of scallops. Scallops were on the overdone side which was a pity because the chili butter on the linguini was good. Hubby had beer battered seabass with sweet potato chips. Batter was delicious. Shared a chocolate torte for desert that was dense and delicious. Not a huge selection of wines but something to suit everyone. Will def try it again...

Having booked this restaurant for 20 people for the following week for a confirmation meal I decided to visit first to see what it was like. I told them that was why I was there. The food choice on the menu is very limited. I was displeased with the soup I had ordered and then got chargrilled steak burger even though I had asked if that was how it was served and told no. My plate was untouched. The person who served us and was not bothered. I asked for desert and a cup of tea, cup of tea never arrived. I spoke to her at the end of the meal, paying full price for all of it and cancelling our booking and she just shrugged as if that was a normal occurence. I'm not that fussy but will not be going there again, very unsatisfied. Update 25/5/10. Mairead from Canters rang me to apologise for our night. I appreciated that., just wanted to note same.

3 of us had lunch here on Saturday. I was hoping to get the lunch menu but as it was match day that menu wasn't available. Had I known this when I booked the table I would have cancelled. Instead there was an offer of 3 courses for Eur 20. As none of us were particularly hungry we asked for 1 starter and 2 mains, nothing else. After some confusion with the menus and prices we made our order. I asked how much the mains would be as we were not going for the 3 courses. I was told it would be Eur14 or Eur15. When we finished and got the bill we found we were charged 19.50 for the mains!! I was not impressed. I went to the counter and explained what had happened and was told 'oh you got charged from the 'a la carte' menu' that we hadn't even seen! No apology. I did get a refund after complaining so the mains cost Eur 14.50 in the end. The food was fine but I wont be rushing back.

Response:
Sorry their was a mix up over menus but as we do not open on Saturdays for lunch and were only open with a set menu for the Rugby supporters this caused some confusion among my staff. I`m sorry our staff where not completely briefed on menus but the duck you had was only available on the ala carte menu again i would like to apologise and hope to see you in the future.

Visited on a Thursday night recently.Only one other table was occupied. Atmosphere would have been better if Restaurant was busier. Nice live jazz on Thursdays.Service was good. Food was good if a little pricey. However we did choose from a la carte menu and you could eat for less by utilising the set menu or choosing nightly special offers. Ask about these as they may not be offered otherwise

After a lovely Valentines stroll in Clontarf we had built up an appetite and ventured upon Canters. There was a set Valentines menu available but we just got starters/mains as there was a box of chocs to eat at home. I had a lovely pear and goats cheese tart for starter with carmelised onions and my husband had the cheese and bacon potato skins with sour cream also delicious. My mains I had the falafels with potatoes and salad they were just the right size and very tasty my husbands burger was tasty with bacon, cheese and thick crunchy chips. The service was friendly and very quick and the atmosphere was good with nice romantic music in the background. As an extra bonus when the staff gave us back our change they handed us a CD of all the love songs that were being played in the restaurant I thought that was a lovely touch for the day that was in it. I will definately return again.

My friend and I ate here on Monday night... We live locally so it was a case of going for something cheap & cheerful... With a 3 course early bird for €26 it was certainly good value.... The food here is always good too... I have eaten here several times & taken many friends here and never been disappointed.... I will definitely be back and recommend it to anyone who has not yet been... :)

We live locally and use at Canters when we want a quiet, informal bite to eat in the evening as a couple or with friends. Quite often it can be VERY quiet midweek but on the plus side the service is good but not excessive given staff availability. The main menu is relatively static but the seasonal and specials selection varies with some of their staples and other more novel fare. Lamb seems to be consistently good as does the haddock risotto. The wine menu is limited and to be honest the mark-up for those on offer seems a little high, otherwise value for money is really excellent: portions are large and a plate of nicely (not soggy) mixed vegetable arrives with the mains. The early bird and fixed price menues offer real recession beating deals. In summary its not Michelin dinning but is solid, well prepared food, in a nice local restaurant at affordable prices.

I've never really heard any reviews abt this restaurant, no one has heard of it! I read some reviews of it and decided to try now and think later. It was our best friend fortnightly session, funny enough we tend to choose quaint neighbourhood restaurants. The staff were lovely since we got lost, needing directions there. We had the christmas menu. The pork belly was mouth watering and melted in your mouth! I had the crab risotto, which turned out to be a crabmeat mayonaise mix on hard bread?! Nonetheless, palatable. It turned out my mains then was tastier than my friend's. She had the traditional ham and turkey, I had the grilled lamb. I could say my main was well portioned, well delivered, tasty, melted in the mouth lamb! Dessert was really overwhelming! Tasty SWEET and if we hadn't ordered starters, all of the dessert would be wolfed down. The bread and butter pudding was heavenly. What's best is the staff brought extra custard and maple syrup! SUPER! The food was ok, there's a huge selection to choose from, in that sense, the lack of an exquisite meal is made up for a wide selection. WIll return as the staff is really a dedicated lot, reasonable priced dinners!

My partner and I, along with 4 friends, went to a charity wine tasting night in aid of St Francis Hospice in Canters last Friday night. We have been to similar functions at different venues before - never before has the food on these nights put the wine in the shade!! Our first starter was a haddock risotto followed by red pepper stuffed with chirizo paella. The intense flavour of this was perfectly matched to the selected wines. Next came a truly delicious confit of cornfed chicken, cooked to perfection, then we were treated to porkbelly with chutney - the selected wine to accompany this was a chateauneuf de pape. Finally we finished with medallion of beef with hollandaise sauce. We all agreed this was some of the finest cooked food we've experienced. The atmoshere was fantastic, I think there were over 60 guests, yet the service was top class, no delays at all and friendly waiting staff. We've never been to this restaurant before but we shall definetly all be back - soon!

We had forgotten about a gift voucher we had received for Canters and decided to use it for an early bird on Thursday night. 26 Euro for the early bird and kids ate free. When we arrived we were the only people in the restaurant and this was the case until we left. I had the deep fried haddock with risotto for starter and my husband had the soup, they brought out my daughters meal with our starter which was great. I then had the steak burger and my husband had the chicken. He said the chicken was very dry and was glad he wasn't paying for it, No faults with the burger as it was very tasty. Overall the meal was OK, the service was great as we had the whole restaurant to our selves, would we return in the future, probably not.

Ate here Friday about 8pm Food tasted great, I had sea Bream and spanish salad. Gf had T-bone steak and mash, though she asked for chicken and was told that was the only thing they hadnt got, this should have been told to us as they handed us the menu. I asked what the beer of the week was and was told it was German - the waiter didnt know the name of it but I said I'd have it anyway - it was Stella Artois - Belgian... not a major problem - it still tasted good. Just not more of a surprise than I expected. The background music was kind of dancy - chillout.. I would have expected something less electronic - maybe jazz or classical. They do have live jazz on a thursday which might be worth trying. overall: The service was very pleasant and we felt welcome. We just had main courses with sides and they were high quality. The house white was good too - a large glass for €6.50, €4.00 for 330ml of Stella. I thought it would be busier but I'm glad I didnt bother going to town. I'd go back again no problem.

This restaurant was a complete let down. Having read the positive reviews and looked at the menu, I had high hopes for this local bistro. I was sorely disappointed. Starters were tasty enough. Their main ingredient had flavour and were cooked well but the accompaniments were unimaginative or unpleasant and took away from the dishes. Main courses were both poorly constructed. A tart that was in fact a parcel made of soggy pastry and so salty that a large slug of truly awful wine was needed in order to swallow. This sat atop an old, wet, equally salty salad. The meat of the lamb shank was good but the mash was undercooked and cold and the side vegetables unappealing. An extra side dish was ordered which was greasy, slimy and left uneaten. Aside from the food, the music was loud, frenetic and intrusive and the lighting too bright and canteen-like.

Ate in Canters last night for a family birthday. The service was friendly just a little slow. We were a table of 10, with a seperate table of 6 kids. The adults has all finished their starters before the kids got their food (burgers & chips etc) which I thought should have come out together. We availed of the early bird menu and I started wtih the goats cheese brucetta. The bread was a little hard, but it was tasty. the lettuce garnish really needs a squirt of dressing too, it's just lumped on the plate. I then had the confit of duck. It was very dry, and very very tough in places but tasty, just thought it could have had more sauce with it. It came with rather overcooked savoy cabbage and about 3 thin sliced of cumberland sausage which complimented it very well. It would have felt more moist however, if the sauce over it was a little more generous. The mains come with a dish of veg & potatoes to share. Canter's dessert menu is very disappointing so I opted out there, nothing at all appealed to me, but thats a matter of taste. The waiter brought a lovely candled dessert for the birthday girl and turned down the lights etc, which was really nice. I wouldn't rush back but defo woudln't rule out returning. Canters is just 'OK'.

Had lunch here today. Burger was lovely! Nice and fresh in a soft bun with just the right amount of salad and sauce. Chips were slightly too hard but still edible. Good value too at €10 for most main courses on the lunch menu. My friend had the soup which was very tasty.

never been to Canters before but decided to give it a shot last night (the dine in dublin signs in the windlw were the dealmaker) and can i jsut say WOW!!! myself and my partner both got steaks for our mains, mine rare his med rare, they were cooked to perfection (something alot of places are having difficultly with these days) and for starters i had the fishcakes with tomato chutney while himself had the chicken picatta. Both were delicious and well presented. Our waitress was lovely, really helpful and friendly and nothing was too much trouble for her. For dessert i had raspberry jelly and ice cream and my partner the choc chip bread and butter pudding, both absolutely yummy and both plates were scraped clean! the atmosphere was really nice and relaxed even though it was very busy and the surroundings are really nice too. will definitely be back as we thought it was exceptional value for money (something that is really important to us in the recessionary times)

I ate here a while ago and thought it was good but not great but saw they were offering a special menu for the Dine In Dublin week so decided to give it a second chance. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with everything bar the service which myself and my partner found to be seriously lacking in friendliness. Our food was lovely if a little slow to come though I had ordered a steak well done for my main course so that probably explains that. (The steak was lovely as was my partners half roast duck). The waitress was initially friendly but then as the meal progressed she seemed to be less and less interested in looking after us and the other patrons and twice when we were looking for someone she was nowhere to be found even though it was not that busy in my opinion and then when we did get her attention we both found her to be quite rude, perhaps we got her on an off day. I will be back to Canters for the good food and usually good service, hopefully our server will smile next time!

I could not agree more with the last review. I to used to be a regular at this restaurant, and ate there a lot. However it's gone way down hill. I decided we would give it one last go at the start of the month, what a mistake that was. The food was greasy & tasteless, not a patch on what it used to be. I don't no why they changed it, but it's clearly not working. We wont be back. Overall rating not working, Rate:2

This place used to be great, myself and my work colleagues regularly came here for lunch but since its changed ownership and chef clearly, the food has gone completely downhill, to the point that we wont eat there anymore, and why oh why would you have gotten rid of those delicious homemade chunky chips!!! Bring back the old!

Have they changed the chef or something?? I used to eat here regularly. I have eaten here a couple of time's over the last month or so, but I think no more. Was all just so wrong...The food was tasteless, The house wine drank was horrible, and then we waited forever for the bill. I had always enjoyed the food & service here before now, but it's changed. They used to have this mushroom starter that was to die for, but alas gone..along with the staff's manner's I think. Everything has the suspicious taste of the microwave!! What's happened to this place?

Had the early bird with my boyfriend there this evening and was not impressed at all! My boyfriend even stating his steak was the worst he has ever had!!! Found the food to be overly fried, greasy, and lacking any real flavour. They have a good variety of dishes available on the early bird, but I did not find it to be good value as the food itself was so poor! They didn't have their one 1/2 bottle of red wine available so we had 2 glasses of the not at all nice house red, which eneded up costing more. The whole place in my opinion is just not pleasant. Wont be going back that is for sure.

I ate here with my boyfriend on Sunday night and was not dissapointed. We got the early bird which is available 7 days a week from 5-9pm for €26 you get a 3 course meal with a very wide choice of options unlike some of the very limited early bird menus out there. Food was absolutely gorgeous really tasty and the presentation is excellent. The service was fantastic a very friendly waitress looked after our table she gave us advice of what we should choose on the menu as we both cold not decide! Over all it was a lovely experience we will definitely return soon, I am looking forward to it already.

We went to canters on wed night, and our group had a really great evening, most of us chose from the christmas menu, which from starter to main was all gorgeous. Some of us ate on the a la carte menu, which could maybe be seen to be a little expensive on a normal night out, but the portion size's were not be grumbled at!! I had a blue cheese salad starter, with these little roasted pears, Together it was a great mixture and the main of goats cheese tart was just..so so good! Service was fantastic, was really attentive, and they were clearly very busy, but that didn't effect us in any way, which was nice. Really enjoyed everything, will be back in the new year for sure.

arrived at 7pm got a halfhearted welcome my wife and i ordered from the earlybird menu at 26 euro per head expected much more than we got.Firstly the service was very slow, soup arrived eventually and was flavourless no bread or rolls served with soup had to ask for some. the main course if you could call it that was served without any vegetables and was like a kiddies meal. Lastly the iced cream dessert was like eating flavoured chalk. maybe it was because of earlybird but my wife and i will not be eating or recommending this restaurant anytime soon

Last friday a large group of us ate here as a special night out.I had pre-booked the tables and the staff could not have been more helpful or friendly. They provided the early bird menu(even though by the time we ordered what with chatting etc it was after the usual early bird time). The menus consisted of varied choices which included a veggie option. The staff even offered us alternatives if anybody didnt like the choices provided. The food service was excellent and all the meals(20something of them)arrived promptly and at the same time. The group some from overseas were very impressed with the quality and service provided.Another nice thing i liked was that we were told there was no rush back on the table which is a lovely thing to hear on a special night out.Overall we had a really enjoyable experience and i would definitly recommend it to others

Contary to the other review I will not be back here. I ate here at lunch time and was disappointed with the food. I ordered a pizza and it was the smallest pizza I have ever received and slightly cold. None of my party were very impressed, menu is trying to be too modern.

My husband, mother and I had lunch here on Friday and it was extremely good value and delicious too. Canter's have changed their lunch menu recently and we were very impressed with the choice and value. I had brie, fresh cranberries and rocket leaves on a crunchy fresh ciabatta with a side salad for 6.00 Euro! The brie was delicious and a very enerous chunk too. my Mam had a chicken thigh in lemon butter sauce with garlic mashed potato and said it was gorgeous, that was 7.95 and my husband raved about the delicious lasagna he had which was served with a fresh baby spinach leaf salad. Also 7.95. Generous portions, friendly service and all delicious. We will definitely be more frequent lunchers there from now on. Well done Canters on a revamped lunch menu.

I've never noticed this place before, I live not too far away, & must have passed it 50 times, but something is not very noticeable when you pass. However, we decided to give it a go on Friday night & took the parents in who were visiting & WOW was I impressed. It was really fantastic. We mainly choose from the €35.00 set menu, some of the family had the Ala Carte menu, but none out of 5 of us were disappointed. Mushrooms to start were one of the nicest starters I've tried in a long time. I had Sea trout for mains which was cooked to perfection. There was a slight problem with a main course that had sold out, but it was dealt with very quickly & professionally by manager & we were all more than happy. It was mentioned that it could be closing, so I asked and was assured that it was not. Can't wait to go back.

I like this place ... I've been a few times, always enjoyed myself, enjoyed the food and the service ... never felt ripped off. The only one slight drawback I've ever noticed, is that there's not much in the way of parking nearby, unless you go up one of the side streets ... then again, I guess most of us have a few glasses of wine when we go out, so probably best we don't bring the car. Like it's sister resturarant, The Washerwoman's Hill, Glasnevin .... there's much to like about this mid priced restuarant. Sadly, it does not appear to be attracting enough custom (can't understand why, based upon my own experineces and that of others who have reviewed the restuarant here) & hence, is currently up for sale / to let (though seems to be continuing with the same good levels of service / food etc) Another one which we'll probably only truely miss, when it's gone I fear .... I'll certianly try and go again before it closes.

I went to Canters for my friends birthday on a Friday night, we had a great night the food was gorgeous and very well priced. Our waiteress was really good but the food took ages to come out between courses, although it was worth the wait we did wait quite some time between the starter and the main course. Dont let this put you off it is definitely worth a visit and the seabass was to die for!!!!

We went in on Sunday after the match and were so impressed. The service is excellent; atmosphere is great as well. Very surprised about the location...We had the stuffed mushrooms as a starter and they are incredible! Best in Dublin! Our mains were equally great (roast chicken and bouillabaisse).

Went down here on Saturday night with the missus for a change had the bruschetta to start and a very well presented Salmon special. The salmon was wrapped in parma ham and decorated with some sauteed prawns the other half had the prawn starter and beef fillet (as usual) both plates where sent back cleaned which give testimony to the chef. Only down side was it could have been busier. Service second to none. As Arnie would say we`ll be back.

Well worth a visit. Had originally booked elsewhere for a party from work when I later checked out menupages. Other place got 1 star so I started to panic. Canters was nearby so I decided to give it a try instead. We weren't disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal; beautiful tomato soup, steak dinner with jumbo chips and a creme brule to finish. Nice Cote de Rhone too. Most of the others were happy also and the early bird menu, from which most people ordered, was reasonably good value at about €25. Only one regret - I should have chosen the fillet stake instead of the more economical option. I would return again. I see they had a kiddies menu too. Well done and thank you to the helpful and friendly staff at Canters.

I too spent Valentines night at Canters. We had a really enjoyable night. The set menu for €45 had some good choices and the rose and chocolates were a nice touch! Starters & mains were great, but my cheesecake was pretty tasteless. The service was to high standard. Will be back to try it on a "normal" night.

I had a really good time in Canters, I was here on Valentines day and so had a set menu. The service started off very good but deteriorated over the night...it took forever to get the bill. The food however was terrific, with the exception of the mass produced desserts. Starters were delicious and the main courses were amazing. I was warned about the cost of Canters but I didn't find it too bad. What I would have prefered would have been slightly smaller portions, and as a result, the dishes being a little cheaper. All the same, the place is worth a look.

I must admit I had a very pleasant and nice experience at Canters restaurant last night. The food was lovely and service was pleasant. The wine list was also well laid out, as I'm not up on my wines but had no problem here. The manager made herself known and was very delightful. It's nice to find a nice pleasant restaurant with good food and a good atmosphere locally as I'm a northsider, and find myself travelling to the city at the weekends. Ten out of ten Canters. And thanks!

I have tried to visit this place on a few occasions. The trouble is that you forget about it until you are past it and the parking is nonexistent. When this place was Trotters the food was basic but always well cooked and served with humour. These days it seems to be microwaved and placed roughly on the table in front of you. There seemed to be some mix up over one of the specials. It was a fish dish which appeared also on the a la carte menu. The difference in price was nearly a fiver but the waitress explained that the special did not contain potatoes. One gets a lot of potatoes for a fiver or maybe not in Canters. I tried a steak which was made of shoe leather, with mashed potatoes. Suffice to say the potatoes were watery, yellow with a brown tinge and obviously reheated. The temperature they were served at suggests they had visited the microwave on the way to the table, not a good omen. We passed on anything else after all, if they cant cook a steak medium to well done then what chance have they got with risotto?

Absolutely no complaints what so ever, the whole evening was completely enjoyable food really was out of this world, nothing to rich or to plain, just Right, I had the Evenings specialty, the cod, was fantastic. The service was equally as good, our waitress was highly entertaining! I’ve even arranged to go back with a large group of friends for an occasion later this year. A really great evening, would like to thank all the canters staff for such a good time.

Felt I had to write something after reading the last two reviews, myself and partner were in Canters on sat night and had possibly one of the best nights out this year. The food was truly mouth watering, had the duck to start and the sea bass to follow, my partner, crostini and fillet, both cooked to perfection. The waitress was truly pleasant, very fast and extremely efficient. All in all a top night out, I’ll certainly RECOMMEND Canters.

Ah sure says I what have we got to lose, when Canters was suggested as an evening meal choice tonight. Oh My God. We were disgusted and disappointed with the food and service. 7pm and we were the only diners in the joint should have been a tip off. Monkfish skewers were so heavily laden with chilli that that one taste obliterated any other. Corn fed chicken on a risotto that had been made yesterday, heated in an oven and had the consistency of wallpaper paste followed along with reheated in oven mash. When I ordered the sea bass., I was asked if I wanted the special or the a la carte sea bass. When asked what the difference was between the two. The answer I got was, one is the special and one isn't. Well duh. There was no service to speak of as no one came near us and once again stale bread, which was served to us while we heard a waitress ask the staff, did you not cut the fresh bread. No they didn’t. Horrible is to good a word for our dining experience. Lesson to the wise. If no one is eating in an establishment with a steady string of traffic outside, it is probably best if you stayed away.

The place looks lovely from the outside and, wanting to support local business, the b/f and I wandered down one Sat evening. Only one other table in the place, which was a kid's birthday dinner, but the atmosphere was ok. The staff was very pleasant but lordy the food was terrible! I had goat’s cheese samosas for starters. The pastry was like stale spring roll pastry and there was little goat’s cheese in sight - it was really quite unpleasant. I had the pork afterwards, which was better, but not particularly tasty - in fact, the theme of tastelessness ran throughout all of the dishes. Unfortunately, the restaurant's webpage didn't match the menu at the place itself - we'd gotten all excited about things on the webpage but unfortunately, it wasn't to be. It was very disappointing because that area needs a good restaurant.

I ate here just after it opened, having formerly been the unfortunately titled "Trotters". I wasn't really impressed. The food was mediocre, the interior characterless and the staff aloof. It wasn't good value either. That said, it was their first week and it seems from the reviews here that it has all improved, thankfully. I'll try it again, maybe for lunch or an early bird.

"A Hidden Treasure on the Northside" Myself and my friends went to Canters for the Early Bird menu the other evening and the 25euro per head was easily the best value for money I have spent in a restaurant. I got the Thai fishcakes for starter followed by the chicken breast in a lovely Caesar dressing and plenty of veg. The dessert was a "to die for" home made cheesecake. Ten out of ten for staff service and friendliness. I would recommend this place to anyone who does not want to venture into town and is looking for a change from the usual restaurants and pub grub!

I first was introduced to Canters through a friend we had a lovely nite there and since then have gone back on numerous occasions, particularly for the service, I found they made you feel very welcome and every request was met with a smiling face and nothing was a problem. But the main reason I went back was for the Food, yum yum.

Breath of fresh air in Fairview !!!!! Had our Xmas party there on Friday and you never expect the same food quality and service as you may get any other weekend but let me tell you it was fantastic.. The food was delicious and it was delivered with care and good character from the hard working waitresses.... We did not wait for anything all night and all our needs where met... I will definitely be back ...its been the talking point of our office all week WELL DONE....

Worst meal I have ever had!!! My starter wasn’t warm all the way through & my main course was definitely no improvement!!!! The lamb was cold, the mash was lumpy, & don’t even get me started on the service, it was rubbish!!! Would it kill these people to smile????? Definitely a no go!!!!!
