Food was sublime! Went for the early bird menu as we liked everything on it so did not need to order from full menu. The food was absolutely gorgeous - cannot find fault. This restaurant was recommended to me by a colleague who knows every restaurant in Dublin and when I asked her to recommend a restaurant near Vicar Street, she asked if I liked seafood and if so, recommended the Lord Edward. I have to say that I wasn't expecting the food to be so perfect - cannot understand why it hasn't been recommended to me before now! I have to say that the atmosphere was slightly lacking; found the same when we went back there for a drink after our show - just something missing. But all in all, I will DEFINITELY be back!

It was a pity to see the two not so good reviews here for the Lord Edward although some points were true. It is an institution and would probably appeal more to the older generation in relation to style and service. My family (parents, sisters and myself ) and friends of my dad have mostly had the lunch menus at the Lord Edward but actually lunch can extend to early evening as there is never a rush to push you out...and of course you can always retire to the lounge downstairs and have a drink with the locals. The lunch menu is much better value than the a la carte dinner menu (I think there is an early bird as well). The seafood chowder or prawn cocktail are safe starters and quite nice. Mains offer several choices of fish and although it may not be served in a modern way...you are guaranteed fresh fish. All mains are served with an abundant amount of vegs, potatoes, chips, whatever you fancy. You wont leave hungry. Im not a dessert person but Ive been told their are very nice. The staff are extremely friendly (especially if you are friendly to them)...I know a couple of the guys have been there over 30 years and are very welcoming. As I said its not really for the young....but you could bring your folks or aul aunty and she'll love it! Be aware though, there are two short flights of stairs up to the restaurant.

Went there last night, wasnt my choice of a restaurant..It is slightly overpirced, food is okay and plenty of seafood to chose from. 10% charge is already included weather service was good or bad...Ours was all right I guess...Wouldnt go back there, purely for that reason and there high prices, but if somebody else is paying give this place a go as its kinda nice and quiet..and believe me you wont bump into anybody you know there! Perfect place for a blind date almost!

Had heard a lot about the Lord Edward - more about it being an old-fashioned institution than anything about the food really- now I realise why - while it did have some charm the food was very poor overall. Extremely pricey too. staff were friendly- we were overcharged too but i'll give them the benefit of the doubt on that. overall-very disappointing and I won't be back.

Visited here last week with two other friends and was full of high expectations. The decor of the restaurant was very 70's. The waiters although very friendly did not create that special occasion effect. We opted for the 5 course special. The starter we had was trout with crab meat which was excellent. This was followed by seafood chowder which was very bland we all had to add salt for taste! Two of us had the sole which was absolutely smothered in more of this bland creamy sauce! The only good part of the meal was the Flurie wine! The whole experience was very much 70's with too much sauce! Suggest that it would be served on its own with a sauce boat. The other person had the steak which was just ok. The deserts were normal. We will not be returning to this dated restaurant. It is an excellent spot for anyone that is looking for a nostalgic experience, to a time where Irish cuisine was very poor.

As a regular visitor to the Lord Edward it was a natural choce to go there for a celebration meal. from the moment we were greeted by the friendly & debonair waiter I knew I had made the right choice. He ensured we were comfortable and left us to peruse the menu. On his recommendation we chose smoked salmon pate & prawn cocktail for starters with grilled sole & poached turbot as main accompanied by a bottle and half of fruity zesty chablis. Both meals had a balance of flavour & texture. We were made to feel special throughout the meal & the waiters light banter & attention added to our celebration. We indulged in the famous creme brulee and stilton & port to finish - Aah truely a memorable night. Thank you Lord Edward and staff!!

I LOVE this restaurant! I have gone numerous times and it never fails to impress. When you walk into the restaurant it’s got a real wow factor - it feels like stepping back in time to a by-gone era – almost like walking into your Granny’s ‘good’ dining room with a spectacular view of Christchurch Cathedral as the backdrop. My husband took me for my birthday treat last Saturday, I ordered the avocado pear with crab and prawns for starters and my husband had the seafood chowder. Both left us licking our lips for more. I had the Scallops and Prawn Newberg which I’ve had before and couldn’t wait to try again and it is consistently great – my mouth just waters thinking of it! My husband had the Lord Edward Fish Pie and he loved it. We couldn’t fit in dessert so had an Irish coffee each to top off a lovely romantic meal. It has to be said also, that the waiters really add to the sense of timelessness of this restaurant – they are dressed in smart white shirts and bowties with crisp white aprons and their charm and attentiveness makes the whole experience of visiting this restaurant really enjoyable. Only drawback is its a tad pricey but worth it for a treat and they do a early bird menu now so will definitely make the most of that..this restaurant is a hidden gem.

Avoid this "restaurant"! How on earth do the have the guts to call this a restaurant. We visited this establishment last Thursday evening, we will never go back again everything was wrong: my fish was drenched in a white tasteless sauce, my wife ordered turbot but was served ray wings, their wine is for sale in the supermarket for 10 euros: in Lord Edwards it is for sale at a whopping 44 euros. We have eaten in good fish restaurants in France, Portugal, Spain so we know what fish should taste like. I advise people to avoid the Lord Edwards. They do serve bad food, very overpriced. They ruined my night.

I went here to try the Lobster and found it to be quite nice. The only problem was the inadequate size and exhorbitant cost. At 50 euro you would expect to get a lobster that would fill you up and leave little room for dessert. I will return but not for the lobster.

I found the waiters in this restaurant very helpful. The fish portions were generous, however I would expect that for the prices charged. Had the Salmon Pate to start, this was garnished with a small side salad, which was on its last legs to be honest. If I had salad at home in that condition I wouldnt dream of serving it up on a plate, it would go straight in the bin. Its disappointing to pay 10 euro for a starter that is served in such a condition. Even the lemon on the plate looked dry and unappealing. Overall, its too pricey, there are many good meal deals available in places that serve food as good if not better. This place needs to look at its price list or it will lose out. Dont think Id go back.

I've been there on a Thursday night with some colleagues and we were the only customers. The place is really old-fashion with a beautiful fireplace. We were a bit disappointed with the food, you can definitely find better seafood in Dublin. Portions were way too small especially compared with the prices. Wine list was terrible. Looks like they took all the cheapest bottles they could find at Tesco.

I was at the Lord Edward again last night (have been going since the early 1980s). The service was as attentive as ever, the fish was delicious and there were a couple of nice touches added. There aren't many places like this left in Dublin.

I must say that this is perhaps the oddest restaurant I have been to in a long time. It's quaint, but distinctly lacking in any kind of 'ooomf!', you know? The food was tasty, but I felt it a little overpriced for what it was. I don't think I'd be coming here again, but I can definitely see how some people could be return customers.

Went here last week with a fellow seafood lover. The place itself seems to be trapped in time. The decor and music is a little dated. The waiter though is so friendly and helpful which makes up for it. For starters we had the dressed crab and the salmon mousse, both lovely and tasty, plenty of crab served in a scallop shell. For main course we both had the lobster thermidor. This was very elegantly brought to the table on a silver platter with the lobster tails and potatoes. The sauce was very tasty. At E50 for each lobster it was a lot for a smallish lobster unfortunately. Dessert was the creme brulee which was a bit cool and anaemic. Overall if you are a fish person I would recommend going here, but don't expect very flash surroundings.

A good friend of mine and I went here before a gig in Vicar street recently. The entrance way into the restaurant is not that obvious especially if you come through the pub. A small stair case confronts you like from an old house. Upon arrival the waiter greeted us to an empty room (it was early). The menu was very generous. However when the food arrived my fish was poured on to my plate from the "silver platter" in front of me. I thought it was just this dish however I later saw a family having more fish being delivered straight form the pan. My friend had the fish stew which was very hearty and delicious. We also had dessert which was excellent though the food was a little overpriced for what it was

Myself and my boyfriend visited this little gem not sure what to expect. Our waiter couldn't have been more helpful even though it was a busy night. I am not a fish eater so I had the steak, it was tender and cooked to perfection. My partner had the sole and couldn't fault it. Loved the mash potatoes. We felt it was good value for money. All in all a great experience.

The penultimate occasion that I dined here was about forty years ago and I have to say that practically nothing has changed in that time. This can often be evidence of a successful formula at work, but sadly, in the case of the Lord Edward it is more indicative of an unjustified complacency and indifference to modern standards. While the restaurant itself may have an Olde World quaintness and a wonderful view of Christchurch Cathedral through the marvellous, leaded bay window, the food and its presentation does not quite pass muster. To start, my wife had a plate of Moules Mariniere while I opted for a plate of Smoked Eel, which was a very meager portion indeed, for a rather expensive €8.95. The eel itself was pleasant enough and accompanied by an equally meager salad and some horseradish, which tasted like it came straight out of a jar. My wife was very unhappy with her mussels which were definitely not fresh and plump but more skimpy and dry. Her main course of grilled turbot was more successful, being a choice piece of fresh and properly cooked fish. My choice of sole Bonne Femme was overwhelmed by an ocean of mushroom and white wine sauce, which all but drowned the fillets of fish. When I asked if they could remove some of the sauce, the head waiter offered me a couple more fillets to absorb the sauce, which redressed the balance somewhat, but it was a badly judged and badly presented dish, while the fish itself, although reasonable, was unremarkable in its freshness or flavour. The accompanying vegetables were an unmitigated disaster, comprising mange tout, pureed carrots and cauliflower, which all looked and tasted as if they had been sitting in a warming oven for an hour or two. We also had some mashed potatoes and some croquette potatoes, both of which were overly fluffed up, having no firmness of texture. The boss, (owner?) an elderly gentleman, asked was everything alright and listened to our complaints while looking out the window, as if he only wanted to hear “Yes, lovely, thanks”.

Went here last night after reading all the great reviews. The room is fantastic - very unusual and authentic looking and the service was very friendly. The food however was a massive disappointment. I had the prawn and crab avocado - the prawns had no flavour at all. Then the prawn (big mistake) and scallop speciality. The waited spooned the rice onto my plate and then poured the food from the frying pan onto my dish - it was a big sloppy mess. It was a real shame because the place has great potential but I definitely won't be going back there. The bill for two with two starters and main courses and a bottle of wine was over 120 euros which was really over the odds for the experience. The waiter was charming though.

For fish lovers, this restaurant is paradise. I ate dinner here yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. As a previous reviewer mentioned, this is not in any way a trendy or hip restaurant. Nor, in my opinion should it ever try to be. It is, after all, one of the oldest fish restaurants in the city. I had the ray which was beautifuly moist and a welcome treat as it is increasingly hard to find on a menu anywhere. My friend had a steak which was disapointing, but if you ask me thats what you get when you order meat in a renowned fish restaurant!

Went with my partner for a cosy evening meal. Arrived at 8 and was out by 9. Service was just a little too quick felt very rushed. Went out for a cigarette after starter and when came back main course was already sitting out on table. The food was good, although my partner still felt hungry as had scallops for main course. I had fish stew, which was very filling, and good value for money. Would not rush back as like to take my time when eating out.

It was a birthday treat for my partner, the great seafood lover. I'm not a big fan of fishy bits myself...but I booked Lord Edward for the sake of love! Food was fresh and served in a fancy way. Wine and desserts fabulous... but value and place itself quite disappointing. Three course meal left my birthday boy not quite so full and satisfied, and it was not a cheap treat...The venue is a dusty and gloomy room and you need to ask the waiter for the key if you want to use the toilet...Quite ridiculous I thought...

We ate in this restaurant on Saturday on the recommendation of this website. I must admit when we arrived I thought "Oh" as the pub downstairs is not the greatest looking pub. However, we went upstairs after a drink to find a small restaurant which is a similar size to a front room. The food was superb, I can recommend the dressed crab and seafood cocktail to start with and the Seafood stew and Plaice for mains. We then followed with the crème brulee and washed it down with a bottle of wine. Total cost was 97 euros. I can thoroughly recommend and would definitely eat there again when I next visit Dublin.

Great place for a nice quiet meal and brilliant service. Traditionally decorated with nice classical music in the background. Seafood is very creatively done, vine list is very good, desserts are gorgeous. Just perfect! Don’t go if you are looking for a trendy hot spot to be seen in!

If you love seafood, wonderful service, an imaginative and well executed menu and great ambiance, then you have no excuse for eating at home tonight, go there now!!! Was there recently, can't recommend this place highly enough. Ok, if they gave me free eats for life, I could try, but that dream aside, just go and enjoy

Fab restaurant and wonderfully friendly staff. After hearing some amazing review of this place I decide that it would be the perfect place to bring my Mum to celebrate her 60th birthday. Five of us went for the meal and were really looking forward to it. Then my heart sank as we stepped out of the taxi - there were a bunch of guys sitting at the entrance drinking and smoking to their hearts content and I began to think what on earth is this place like on the inside if this is the entrance. My Mum needless to say threw me a look as if to say you better be joking! Up the stairs we went and into the pub, which is like someone’s old sitting room. But it was really nice! The staff were really friendly and said that they would call us when our table was ready. The meal was wonderful, I’m not big into seafood but this just melted in your mouth! We had a few bottles of wines (which were recommend by the staff) and they went down great. Then I ordered an Irish coffee and they brought one out for everyone as a gift to help the celebrations along. We had great craic, even though it is a small place you don’t feel like you have to stay quiet so you can relax and enjoy yourself. Mum was well chuffed with the evening as we all were. I would definitely like to visit this wonderful plaice again (plaice get it? Ha! Ha!)

Can't believe there are no reviews of this venerable old place. Have been here several times; even though I've live about 50 yards from it for the past 12 years, I only first visited about 4 years ago. I'm not a huge fan of fish but even I like the food here, and my wife, who's a fish lover from foreign parts, says it's the best she's had in Dublin, including certain trendy highbrow seafood places (not sure is this because Lord Ed gets 2 deliveries a day, so it's pretty fresh produce). The decor is very old-fashioned but cosy (looks like an Edwardian dining room because, well, it probably _is_ an Edwardian dining room), and the menu has a retro 70s chic because fashion has come full circle (prawn cocktail and melon, anyone?). And one of the few restaurants in Dublin that has actual middle-aged male waiters; a phenomena you see in Europe, but not in Ireland (all lovely blokes; one of the reasons I like to bring my father and mother-in-law there). If you like to go places to be seen, you will hate it. For the rest of us, I hope it never closes.
